One of the unique things about the ADADA State agitation is that beyond being the Oldest state creation agitation in the South East, it is the only state creation agitation in the South East in which all the consisting communities and LGAs are unanimously behind the struggle. It also enjoys the support of Enugu State Government. In 2006, Enugu State Government established a State Actualization Committee for the Creation of Adada State. Adada is unarguably a step ahead in this quest for a new state in the South East. I won’t be surprised if they eventually get their State.

Anioma is indeed an Igbo speaking part of Delta State. Most Nigerians believe that any additional state to be created in the South South should be Anioma just like Southern Kaduna should be the next state to be created in the North West. Anioma unfortunately is not part of the South East. To balance the imbalance in the number of states across the six geopolitical zones of the federation, it is right that an additional state should be created from the present South East geopolitical zone. Check the 2014 National Conference report recommendations regarding the creation of additional states and you’ll be educated the more.

A Bill for Adada State Creation Passes First Reading in the Senate

A bill for the creation of Adada State, which was sponsored by Distinguished Senator Okey Ezea [LP, Enugu North] on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, passed through the first reading on the floor of the Nigerian Senate.

The bill, which has been cited as the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2024 (SB. 482)”, seeks to amend Section 3(1) and the First Schedule, Part 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to provide for the creation of Adada State to bring the number of South-East states to six (6) to be at par with the other geopolitical zones of the country.

The agitation for the creation of Adada state dates to 1983 when the senator representing Nsukka senatorial zone in the Second Republic, Engr. Isaiah Ani, presented a bill. Expectations were high after the 2014 Constitutional Conference had recommended that an additional state be created in the South-East. Although there have been proposals for the creation of other states out of the geopolitical zone over the years, none has been as acceptable and as qualified as Adada.

Ika people reject Sen Nwoko’s Bill to ‘annex’ Anioma State to South East


Midwestern Region (2) States; Western Region (7) States and Northern Region (19) States. In our considered opinion; Senator Ned Nwoko and his Distinguished Colleagues from Edo, Ishan, Itsekiri, Urhobo, Ijaw should be addressing the subtle and yet obvious marginalization/decimation of Midwestern Region amongst the original Four Regions of Nigeria as at 1963.

CONCLUSION:

In the light of all the above; Ika Ethnic Nationality, in principle, supports the Creation of States particularly ANIOMA State that does not bestride any part of Eastern State or Region. Taking all the determinants that are required for State Creation; the Four (4) Local Government Areas that make up the original Proposed ANIOMA State eminently satisfy all the requirements.
We, therefore, humbly request our Distinguished Senator, Ned Nwoko to revisit his ” Proposed Bill for the Creation of ANIOMA State particularly ” the GEOGRAPHICAL COVERAGE” or Contrived Annexation of ANIOMA State to Eastern Region.
