I was at first bank, Benin city today; I noticed new faces in the cubicle as tellers so I promptly inquired from my female friend who is a staff there, if they had new staffs. She told me that the new faces are the newly recruited staffs from the last recruitment that was conducted. I didn't ask further questions but I hope first bank hasn't concluded their recruitment behind closed doors. |

FG goes after election tribunal judges, others — 11th October 2016 Trails alleged N7bn judgment bribery cash By Adetutu Folasade-Koyi The Federal Government, through the Department of State Security (DSS), is set to carry out more arrests of judges across the country. Specifically, the DSS will soon go after judges who served on election petition tribunals. Daily Sun gathered yesterday that “investigations by security agencies showed that money allegedly changed hands between some judges and agents of some serving governors on some election cases, before and after the 2015 general elections. “In the course of investigation, it was discovered that a serving governor allegedly paid N2 billion to judges who sat on the election petition tribunal and when the matter got to the Appeal Court, the same governor parted with N5 billion. “The money was paid about three weeks ago.” Meanwhile, rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana has said the arrested judges are not above the law. Falana spoke on Television Continental (TVC) in Lagos, yesterday. “I don’t support the illegal detention of anybody but it must not be limited to lawyers and that is why, unlike our colleagues now, who are shouting from the rooftops, whenever any citizen is detained illegally, we come out; whether you are a poor man, a big man or even a labourer, we don’t limit… “We don’t discriminate. That was what I was telling my colleagues; let us have a common standard with respect to the treatment of criminal suspects in our country. “Don’t shout yourself hoarse when big people are arrested or detained because that is discriminatory and that means you are only there to defend the rich and powerful people.” Asked if the arrests undermined the independence of the Judiciary, Falana replied: “I do not agree with that because the majority of judges in Nigeria are decent, incorruptible and men and women of integrity. “To that extent, I would not want to believe that the independence of the judiciary has been undermined in any way. “What we should do very quickly now, as responsible people of the legal profession, is to tidy up our loose ends, strengthen our disciplinary mechanisms, both at the Bar and at the Bench and quickly move against those who are destroying the image of the profession; those denting the integrity of the Judiciary of our country. “So, we should not engage in any generalisation. “We shouldn’t hide under this incident to cover up those wallowing in corruption…” Falana said. He also dismissed talks that the DSS cannot investigate judges for corruption and that the charges are byond the National Judicial Council (NJC). “Judges are not above the law. With respect to the NJC, most of the allegations are beyond the powers of the NJC. It has no power to investigate allegations of corruption and money laundering. “So, it is the business of the security services. They’ve forgotten that before any judge is appointed, such oerson is screened by the DSS. The screening is because of the nature of the judges’ work. “You cannot now turn around and question its authority when such agency investigates you Elsewhere, rights lawyer, Ebun Olu-Adegboruwa said any fight against corruption must be done in accordance with acceptable standards and principles of law. “It is highly condemnable for the DSS to be breathing down on the judicial arm of government under the guise of fighting corruption. “In a democracy, the rule of law prescribes the independence of the judiciary, whereby judges must be allowed the unfettered right of taking decision according to law and according to their consciences. A constitutional lawyer, Mr Paul Umuzuruigo said the fight against corruption must follow due process. “Any fight against corruption must be done under the rule of law, and there is no law that authorizes the invasion of the home of a judge at an unholy hour of the night. “Being public officers, there is no way these judicial officers would have absconded or run away from normal arrest during the day, if need be. “It is the height of lawlessness and gross intolerance to go about the arrest of judicial officers in the way and manner played out by the DSS,” he told NAN. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Mr Yinka Folarin told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the incident was a clampdown on the judiciary. Folarin said the manner in which the DSS officials invaded and broke into the residences of the affected judges violated their fundamental human rights. “I believe there are laid down rules to effect such arrests and suspect should be treated as such and not as a criminal before conviction,’’ he said. Secretary of Abeokuta branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Samuel Obafemi also criticised the manner of arrest of the judges and insisted “proper procedure was not followed. The DSS has not proven that the judges were invited and refused to honour the invitation.” Similarly, Benson Enikuemehin, a lawyer and former commissioner who represented Ondo State on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) board said arrest of the judges was in tandem with the rule of law. |
My people! isn't it obvious that the judges and other top leaders are scared of buhari? if you challenge his instructions, he opens up your past and gets you humiliated. See the likes of FFK, olisa Metuh and the host of others that have been humiliated cause they spoke against Buhari's government. Even among the apc folks, if you kick against Buhari's govt, you face humiliation; ask the likes of saraki and others. Almost all our politicians are so engulfed in fear -fear of buhari humiliation. it will also amaze us that some of our politicians fled out of Nigeria the moment buhari was announced the winner of last year's presidential election and there is no intention of them returning to this country except when buhari is out of power. This government is government of revenge, simply modified as "fighting corruption". It's only God that will deliver us from this snare called "BUHARI". |
Nigeria VS Kenya Social Media Fight, My Opinion. I am saddened by the continuous act of some of my compatriots to always engage in social media fight with fellow Africans, most notably our brothers and sisters from Ghana and Kenya. It is even unfortunate that these countries Nigeria youths love to abuse on social media are doing better than our potentially great country in virtually all sphere despite the fact that we(as a country) have more revenues, potentials, and opportunities. If Nigerians are not aware of the superiority(in terms of living) of other Africans over us, I will have to educate them using Kenya as a case study. While Nigerians have always pride in the self titled "African Giant" rhetoric, facts on ground shows otherwise. Though we generate more revenue than Kenya, which is 70% due to the gift of nature under our soil(Petrodollars), Nigerians still lag behind greatly in basic things when compared to the East African giant. According to 2015 data from World Health Organisation, Nigeria's male and female life expectancy are 52years and 56 years respectively, meaning an average Nigerian is expected to die before he/she turns 60. Meanwhile, the expectancy for Kenyan male and female are 61 and 66 years respectively. Similarly, while Nigeria has the 10th highest infant mortality rate worldwide with average 72 deaths per 1,000 birth, Kenya's infant mortality rate is rated 52nd in the world with average 32 deaths per 1,000 births. This means it is safer to give birth in Kenya than in Nigeria, and an average Kenyan living in Kenya is expected to live longer than an average Nigerian living in Nigeria. Though Nigeria has more tourism potential than Kenya, but Kenya is one of the choice destination for vacation in West Africa. While Nigeria managed to rake in $601 million as Tourism receipt(Revenue) in 2014, Kenya raked in $1.833 billion in the same year. Nigeria can't even boast of a National carrier meanwhile Kenya Airways, the National Carrier of Kenya boasts of 45 Aircrafts in their fleet with 4,000 workforce strength. In addition, Kenya Airways is reputed to be one of the best in Africa. In Africa, Kenya is the leader of Mobile money. Nigeria is still still battling to get it right in the ICT sector with poor infrastructure, lack of power, lack of political will, and fantastically corruption. At present Nigeria is experiencing recession in her economy, one would expect Nigerians to shun frivolties and seek for ways to turn the recession to prosperity instead of wasting productive hours fighting our African brethren over irrelevances. Why would one who is rationing his/her phone battery life due to epileptic power supply still spend the little battery life s/he got through his/her generator to abuse someone in Nairobi who is neither rationing his/her phone battery life nor is depending on generating set for power? There is no trophy or reward for social media fight, Nigerians should stop sending the wrong image to the world that our greatness lies in social media wars. Nigeria is a great country with potentials, filled with great prospects, but we can never be great if we don't channel our time and resources to fix our country. A word should be enough for the wise... May God Bless Us All, and Bless Nigeria |
