teejan: Schools like UNIBEN,UI and UNILAG are relatively easier to make first class or 2.1 in a school like Lautech or Lasu there is a high tendency of not making good grades, today i can confidently say that graduates of Lautech have blazed the trail and work in top notch companies in Nigeria and diaspora.Even the university of ibadan faculty of technology Postgraduate school can attest to the quality of Lautech grads. All these noise about UNIBEN,UNILAG and UI ARE JUST overhyped. They aint the best.

Dull student who can't make a first class in his low-rated school is talking about making first class in Nigeria's Ivy League. If you were good, you ought to have gained admission into the UNILAGs of this world. But you know that's like climbing Mount Everest. Stop fooling yourself

datola: Ife operates a rigorous academic system that makes you pass through the school and the school passes through you.

Great Ife, Africa's most beautiful campus!
You are so fucking self-conceited to say Ife is Africa's most beautiful campus!! You kidding me? Yet the school is not even rated among first 5000 universities in the world amongst which you sure will find so many South African and Egyptian universities. Your level of exposure is abysmally low. You live in a circumscribed world, where the most beautiful place you seem to have set foot on is your rustic Ife university thrown away into the jungles of Africa! You sound like someone dispatched from the Amazon jungles or Koma village straight to Ife, hence your aesthetics sense is so un-eveloved. Little wonder you think the place prettier than heaven! Your world is such a prison with impossible bars!!!!! That's the tragic thing Ife has done to you VILLAGER and many of your fellow closed-minded Ife graduates! Anyway I'm an AKOKITE...

sammy_avu: well, congratulations to the unilag graduate, but na wa o,in my school DELSU,the highest u ca c is 2or3 first class product that is the reason am proud of Delsu. Great desuite

You must be sick to ever contemplate comparing Unilag with Delsu. That's self-conceited enough; that indeed is an insult!! Unilag is the foremost University in Nigeria in terms of competitiveness, standard of entry; infrastructure; faculty and standard of learning and research. Ask the NUC, if you care. Or you could even ask the sundry rating agencies from NUC to 4iuc to Webometric to Africa.com, etc. A school that produces graduates with so so few first class graduates is proof positive that such is far from a top class institution, one that produces mass under-achievers! That's why the likes of Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, etc produce quantum first class graduates. As we speak there is no university in Nigeria whose foundation programme, alone, enjoys such great recognition from UK institution so much so that it furnishes you with direct entry qualification to UK institutions. I laugh when idiots, or those who have made denial their haven, belch stench and impugn a high flying university like UNILAG in terms of standards. Yet each time rating agencies, including the NUC, rates schools, UNILAG is often placed ahead others; OR HARDLY EVER OUTSIDE THE FIRST THREE BRACKET, and to the chagrin of the worst expectations of haters. Stop being a nitwit!

fork adict:

I can only make one conclusion from your post and that is you have never been to other First generation universities to study hence Unilag to you being the alpha and Omega of tertiary education in Naija.

Fallacy 1: according to the trash you cited as fact number one in your post, other first generation universities are what? Non urdan unis? I guess you must be working in the Fed min of Education for you to know that the best secondary schools in the country are in lagos. Dude, you are mistaking quantity for QUALITY. lagos might have the highest number of secondary schools in the country but I disagree that the best secondary schools are in lag. unless you provide valid and credible evidence to prove otherwise, please hold your peace.

I just might agree that your fact#2 encourages students to make 1st class cgpa but then for 118 to make 1st class degerees? Guy your school is making a mockery of the 1st class degree.

Fallacy #3: Here, you try to provide a direct relationship (where there is none actually) between the number of students found in a school library at any point in time or the number of religious students with the number of students that make 1st class degress. This is inconclusive cos while i was in school, i Knew many students who virtually had the school library as their hall of residence and at the end of the day, they couldnt even graduate with a 2:1. so what are you saying?

fallacy #4: Wifi no be new thing guy. many schools have that in abundance.

Fallacy number 5: How will Unilag not be the most preferred University in naija when most ladies believe that Unilag studentship will improve your social status and will enhance your chances of hooking aristos. My point is that students preferring Unilag to other institutions might be attributable to a wide variety of reasons e.g wannabe music stars, models, even drug courriers (and they are not in small numbers) will want to school in Unilag so that they can conveniently combine their education with their hustling. students preffering Unilag to other Unis in the country has very little to do with academic excellence.

Fallacy number 6: I dont know much about OAU cos I've only been their briefly. Besides it's an unfair comparison you made by comparing Unilag with OAU based on geographical location. Why not compare Unilag with another school located in a metropolitan area e.g UI? then I may respond to this in detail.

FYI. I repeat that first class is reserved for geniuses. I recommend 0.1% of any school's student population. But if we consider the ready availability and abundance of knowledge, a handful of other students may struggle to make the grade. Let's say that these other students constitute 0.4% or more liberally speaking, 0.9%. My argument is considering all factors in totality, the population of students that may graduate with 1st class in any Naija Uni should not be in excess of 1%.

All of us know say Unilag na BUSINESS CENTRE na. their certificate na 3 for ten naira! No be beef! Go Figure!

Mr. Small Mind...By it's admission criteria, Unilag admits mostly geniuses. You won't stomach this fact else you will die! When I failed to gain admission in my first sitting of Jamb, although having made a 70 % on-the-average score, I vowed to myself never to choose Unilag again owing to the apparent disappointment. I re-wrote Jamb and chose Uniben. I got admission fiam!I was there for a short while and quickly wrote Jamb yet again and finally was able to gain admission into almighty Unilag! Well I passed through Uniben albeit for a short while. So I can tell it is a serious school. But I also passed through Unilag. And so I know the stark difference. I am not inviting a debate though, cos there is no basis. But given only the fact that Unilag is situate in a cosmopolitan center like Lagos, is enough to give it a competitive edge over and above other schools in the country. That rubs off on Unilag in so many positive ways than one. But how would you know or admit this given that you are purblind. I no fit shout!
Education / Re: Nigeria: 118 Students Graduate From Unilag With First Class Honours by Steve74(m): 5:32pm On Jun 08, 2013
Unilag strictly admits exceptional students. If you debate this, then you are being cynical. Recall that it is the most competitive university in Nigeria, and this tells in its ever-increasing standard of entry. So what Unilag is for Nigeria is what Cambridge and Harvard are for UK and US respectively. For example, it is perhaps the only university in the country where you are admitted on one just sitting of SSSCE; where you must show proof of having attended a secondary school & not just that you wrote it as an external candidate without a testimonial that you graduated from a high school; that you either have an exceptional grade in your JAMB exams or had a 2.1 FIRST DEGREE before you can be admitted to study courses like Law or Medicine or Engineering, etc; where without a credit pass in Further Maths, you sure can't find admission to study Engineering, etc. Recall also that it was the first university in the country to institute a policy that for whatever course you intend to study, you must have credit pass in both English and Maths. The school can afford to raise its standard of entry so prohibitively high all the time without suffering a backlash because it is forever the most competitive university in the country. Indeed the foremost. The school, also, recently instituted a policy of giving mouth-watering incentives to students to aim at First class. Such incentives include scholarship awards, free tuition and accommodation, as well as sundry cash prizes, among others. Indeed you may find not-so-exceptional students in not-so-competitive courses in the school, but practically every person that gains admission to study such disciplines as Law, Engineering, Medicine, Economics, Accounting, etc are often exceptional as they are stars. I am an Akokite proudly. I know what it took me to attain the honorific status of the famed Akokite; I know the great sacrifice I had to make to be able to gain admission into UNILAG. Granted I was an exceptional student, I, however, couldn't gain admission in my first sitting despite making 70 % on the average in my Jamb score to study Medicine. Nearly all my mates, however, that had far lesser grades than I and chose other universities got smooth admission to study same course in places like Uniben, Ife, and even Ibadan. Initially, when this happened, I felt it was foul play and started fouling my mouth saying something like, 'admission is bought in Unilag.' I have however come to learn since then that there is absolutely nothing like that. If admission ever went to the highest bidder, it only went to those who bid highest with their exceptional skills or academic performance in Jamb and post-UTME. I have also come to discover that the attitude of many disgruntled young NIGERIANS is that anything they feel they can't attain, they resort to bad-mouthing. Indeed no school has suffered more bad-mouthing than Unilag. Anyway Akokites man up to this cynicism rather so easily since we know we are stars and such is the prize that must be paid for being the star university and star graduate of the University of Lagos. See those first class guys? They will make first class if you put them in Harvard or Cambridge or Princeton. I say this confidently because I passed through UNILAG!!!! There is so much to celebrate about the school, but the bad-blood is too much from jealous, complex-suffering non-Akokites. We also saw this in GEJ's failed attempt to rename the school. But nobody can stop the shine of my great and well-beloved alma mater!!!!!

I have never seen folks so clannish, so narrow, so un-diffused, so insecure as folks who say they graduated from Ife and not infrequently UI. They never tire to tell us how Ife is the greatest university in America, Canada and UK, let alone Nigeria! how sick!
When they go shamelessly rampaging like this, I take cover, seeing how they expose their idiocy, insecurities and complexes.
Once they have hint of the presence of an Akokite, they commence their demonstration, for which they are notorious, concocting all possible and impossible scenario of competition. So shamelessly and quite unprovoked, they begin to tell you how their Ife stands taller than Harvard.
And when the last Webometric ranking placed the institution ahead other universities in Nigeria, it became reason for them to go nuts totally. They became so loud with intent to deafen everyone with the greatness of their Ife.
How dare you claim superiority to UNILAG? What is the objective basis?
Before Webometric every ranked Ife tops the last time, the same Webometric had ranked UNILAG ahead other schools in the country over and again. Ilorin, Benin, UI are schools Webometric had in the past ranked tops.
So what is the big deal? But indeed I find it interesting that whenever ranking of universities in Nigeria is done, UNILAG scarcely falls outside the first three. That is hardly the case for Ife. I also find Ibadan within that privileged bracket.
If you've never passed through UNILAG, DON'T SPEAK RUBBISH OF WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW! Stop dwelling on speculations and campaigns of attrition pushed by sufferers of complexes, who think like sick people that reading takes place only in their own university and nowhere else.
Akokites are hardly in the habit of running others down as I have found it the penchant of ignoble folks from UI or Ife, etc.
Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia or Cornell graduates are not in that habit either. So rise above the school you attended and stop holding on to it like crutches. It sadly speaks of the fact that your university did not really nurture or mature you.
If your university really did, you ought to have overcome your paraplegic tendency!!!
Education / Re: Top Ten Colleges Of Medicine In Nigeria by Steve74(m): 4:30pm On May 03, 2013
Some presumptuous fellow will come out and make a listing of Medical schools in Nigerian, and goes ahead with a claim to be ranking them! That is very rude, to put it mildly; very misleading. Whilst NIALS is the body authorized by law setting it up to rank Law Faculties in Nigeria; I do not exactly know which institution in Nigeria is responsible for doing same for Medical Schools. Is it the NUC or the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council? Any way, the listing made no claims of reference to any authority institution. So disregard the list. Do your due diligence. Well UCH is reportedly the best. That has not been authenticated in recent times. Others are LUTH, ABUTH, UMTH, etc. I recall that once it was that we thought UNN had a good Medical School until the UK authorities came out to list a number of Medical Schools in the country, including UNN, whose graduates can't be admitted for any postgraduate medical studies in any UK university. It was an eye opener! Some of these old names are nothing but old hags feeding off the false name they'd strangely made over the years.

I wish you saw the architectural model of the proposed new Law Faculty of Unilag. It will make Harvard green with envy! But even with the current structure in place the school is at the top of its game. Keep flying the flag my great faculty.......
Education / Re: What Are The Top Rank Universities In Naija To Study Pharmacy? by Steve74(m): 3:36pm On May 03, 2013
For many reasons than one the University of Lagos will continue to lead the pack, at least in Nigeria. I recall when I was preparing to write my JAMB exams for university admission, practically everyone of us jambitos opted for Unilag. I think UI came in tow, then Uniben, OAU, etc. What was the attraction for Unilag? Simple. We were proud. We saw the institution as the most competitive, thus the most difficult to conquer or scale. For us, Unilag was analogous to a supremely beautiful young woman that got just too many eligible bachelors helplessly smitten. You know, only the most capable may be able to win her over. That was the catch. If you could gain admission into Unilag, then you might as well declare yourself the best. Besides, the school was always in the news. Meaning Unilag was perhaps as popular as was Facebook. And often people associate popularity with success. Again success has many fathers. Seen as a successful institution, many young Nigerians just couldn't help but go for Unilag. Indeed many are willing to write Jamb exams for as long as it takes just so as to be reckoned GREAT AKOKITES!!!!! It thus has nothing to do with its being a metropolitan university. Will you ever attribute Harvard's or Oxford's popularity to any metropolitan location without falling into an error? Well like they say success has many fathers, and failure an orphan. By every parameter, Unilag leads. It parades the best Law Faculty in Nigeria. LUTH/CMUL can only come behind UCH in ranking; the school's faculty arguably parades the largest number of professors and PhD holders in any Nigerian University; the school's infrastructural capital has also evolved over the years to be one of the best in the country; the NUC has on an annual basis continued to award the school the leading institution in the generation of IGR. So, if its School of Pharmacy comes tops, I will not be surprised. However, if I say I'm an authority in ranking Pharmacy schools, then I'm telling a lie. But I do believe It cannot be any where outside the first three.
