The Senate has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to call off its ongoing strike in the interest of the students and Nigerians in general.

Jibrin Barau, Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, made the appeal while addressing journalists on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that while the Senate sympathised with the union, its members should call off the strike while negotiating with the federal government towards finding lasting solution to the problem.

Mr. Barau said the Senate, in a letter sent to it by ASUU, learnt that part of the grievance was lack of confidence in the committee set up by the federal government to re-negotiate the 2009 agreement.

The lawmaker recalled that when the union declared warning strike earlier this year, the Senate intervened and ensured that the problem did not linger.

He said that ASUU did not report back to the Senate on the difficulties it had in the re-negotiation with the committee before embarking on the strike.

He urged the union to re-consider its position and return to the re-negotiation to save the students, parents and the entire nation the negative effects that would result from the action.

Mr. Barau assured that the committee would monitor the settlement process between ASUU and the committee set up by the federal government to ensure amicable resolution of the problem.

He said: “Let me say that we are very concerned about what is happening in our universities.

“The Senate and indeed, the National Assembly, has been in the forefront of making sure that we act swiftly whenever it is necessary to nip in the bud any problem that is rearing its head.

“I want to say that it was the reason why we decided to intervene immediately when the warning strike action was about to take place and we did all our best to bring the two teams together to negotiate.

“That was what led to the setting up of the Wale Babalakin committee.

“ASUU raised issues that had to do with their allowances and part of it was captured in the supplementary budget that we passed as of that time.

“In the subsequent budgets, some of these areas were also taken care of.”

Asked if the Senate would promulgate law to bar Nigerians from taking their children outside the country to study, Mr. Barau said that such law would not be in the best interest of Nigeria.

“It is something that we know will not be good for our country.

“We know that it is always good to mingle with people from other parts of the world when it comes to the issue of education.

You cannot be an island to yourself; that “you will remain here in Nigeria and say you would not want to interface with others.

“It is not something that has been done in any part of the world.

“You are aware that students from Cameroon, Niger and other parts of the world come here.

“We have exchanged students who come from even the European nations to this country.

“You must have that interaction. What we should say is this: we should make sure that we develop universities and educational institutions to the level of those that we send our children to.

“That is something that should be done. But saying that students should not go to other countries, that I think is not going to be good for us,” he said.

Corruption appears to be physically fighting back in broad daylight as the head office of the premier anti-graft body, EFCC has been attacked by faceless gunmen.

A major security breach was recorded at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the early hours of Wednesday, August 16, 2017, as unknown gunmen attacked the office located at Wuse Zone 7, Abuja.

The group of heavily armed bandits invaded the office at about 05.00 hours and began shooting into the premises, damaging vehicles parked in the premises in the process. However, the attack was repelled by guards on duty.

The hoodlums escaped in a getaway vehicle but not without leaving a message; a white envelope dropped by the fleeing attackers was found to contain a death threat addressed to Ishaku Sharu, a senior investigator with the Commission.

Ishaku who heads the Foreign Exchange Malpractices Fraud Section is in charge of corruption investigation involving several politically exposed persons and retired military brass hats.

The attack on the Zone 7 office which houses the Commission’s AMCON Desk, Procurement Fraud and Foreign Exchange Malpractices Sections, is coming few weeks after another investigator, Austin Okwor was shot and wounded by unknown assailants in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The latest incident has already been reported to the police for investigation.

A man has been caught red-handed with the decomposing head of a dead woman in a Lagos community, sparking quite a stir.

The police in Lagos have arrested a man found with a decomposing woman human head at Imota, near Ikorodu, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Sources at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, told NAN in Lagos that the suspect, simply identified as Emmanuel, was arrested at the home of a native doctor who is now at large.

NAN gathered that neighbours had reported to the police in Imota that a foul smell was emanating from the compound of the native doctor, identified as Jamiu.

“Policemen attached to the division invaded the place, combed the surrounding and discovered a human head.

“Jamiu, the native doctor, however, took to his heels when challenged but Emmanuel was arrested and he confessed that Jamiu helped him to get the human head for protection against Badoo cult group,” a police source said.

The police were on the trail of the native doctor while Emmanuel would be charged to court soon, the source told NAN.

Also, the State CID has also arrested a man for killing another man by stabbing him in the chest during a fight at a bar in Egbeda area of Lagos.

“The suspect will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded,” the source said.

Confirming the arrests, the Lagos police spokesman, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said that investigation was continuing into the matters.

Billionaire Kidnapper, Evans Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, has won his first case against the Nigeria Police Force.

Presiding Judge, Justice Anka Abdulaziz, of the Lagos Federal High Court, on Wednesday, ordered that the fundamental rights suit filed by Evans against the Nigeria Police, will go to trial.

Recall, that Evans through his Lawyer, had filed a N300 million lawsuit against the Police, as exemplary damages for his ‘illegal’ detention and harm caused by his media trial.

Anka dismissed the objections of the Counsel to the Police, Eze Emmanuel, and agreed with the Counsel to Evans, Olukoya Ogungbeje, that service on the first and second respondents have been affected.

The first and second respondents in the suit, are the Inspector General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force. The other respondents, are the Lagos State Police Commissioner, and the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS.

Justice Anka, also ruled that leave was not required for the matter to be heard during vacation, as Order 4 Rule 5 of the Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure Rules of 2009, enjoins the court to pursue speed and justice on issues of fundamental human rights.

Google goes beyond just a search engine as it also stores data about individual online behaviour including their browsing history. However, persons who are interested in keeping their online business private may find this data collection to be disturbing hence the need to delete Google’s stored data of your browsing history.

Independent reports that “Google could have a complete list of almost everything you’ve ever looked at.”

Deleting the archive of information Google has about your online activity could however be achieved in simple steps.

According to news source, Google’s “list will at least include every Google search you’ve ever done while signed in. But if you use Google Chrome, it will also include just about every website you’ve ever visited, all catalogued by date and time, and completely searchable.”


The report further claims that Google keeps the information partly for your own good in case you decide to call for it in the nearest future. However, the other part why Google keenly catalogues your online activities is to help it “use that information for its ads, learning what you’re into and what marketing is most likely to appeal.”

Users who feel bothered by this data collection can however turn off the feature using simple steps which involves accessing the “Activity Controls” then proceeding to the “Web & App Activity” section and deselecting it.

Independent further reported that “if users want to keep the majority of the feature but turn off Google’s ability to receive information from third party services, you can just make sure that “Include Chrome browsing history and activity from websites and apps that use Google services” is unticked.”

The “Activity Controls” page also allows internet and Google users to disable location tracking, contact and calendar storing, Google’s ability to record and store individual voice recordings, as well as the history of videos which have been searched and watched on YouTube.

A cash-in-transit heist took place in various parts of South Africa on Tuesday morning after a group of armed robbers launched a brazen attack on two cash-in-transit vehicles driving in convoy on the R49 in the North West’s police said.

Money fell from the sky when a gang of armed robbers blew up an armoured security van to get at the £1.5million in cash locked inside, Dailymail reports.

Ten criminals in three cars forced the Cash Solutions vehicle off the road on the R71 near Gravelette, Limpopo, South Africa by dramatically shooting out the tyres.

They then attached explosives to the van then dragged the guards off to a safe distance and detonated the charges blowing the side and roof completely off the vehicle.

Such was the power of the explosion, parts of the van ended up at the top of nearby trees in a scene akin to the classic scene from The Italian Job where Michael Caine delivers the line, ‘You’re only supposed to blow the b****y doors off’, after a van is blown up.

A huge shower of notes billowed up into the air when several of the cash boxes inside were blown open raining rands down over a wide area on the roadside.

While two robbers stood over the guards at gunpoint the rest of the gang grabbed cash boxes full of money, each thought to have been carrying around £90,000.

The £1.5million rand raid saw tens of thousands of rands in 50 and 100 rand notes blowing in the breeze on the other side of a fence which was out of reach of the gang. Part of the roof or side of the van was photographed wedged high up in a nearby tree.

It is not known if passing motorists helped themselves after the gang drove off and before the police could arrive and seal off the area to call in a forensics team. The gang escaped with cash and firearms belonging to the security guards.

Limpopo Police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe said the road would be closed for at least four hours while officers searched for clues to the gang that carried it out.

He said: ‘There are about 10 men in three vehicles who shot at the van and blew the tyres out to make it veer off the road and then they blew it up with explosives.’

The gang escaped in two Mercedes Benz and a BMW with dozens of cash boxes.

Wladimir Klitschko has announced his shock retirement from boxing with immediate effect, ending any chance of a rematch against heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua.

Ukrainian boxing legend, Wladimir Klitschko, has announced his retirement from boxing, and called time on a 21-year career, ending the prospect of a rematch with Anthony Joshua, which had been pencilled for November 11.

The 41-year-old who enjoyed a 21-year career in the win in which he won 64 of his 69 fights, was famously beaten by Joshua in an almighty heavyweight scrap on 29 April this year in an 11th round stoppage.

According to Sky Sports, a statement from the former world champion read: “I deliberately took a few weeks to make my decision, to make sure I had enough distance from the fight at Wembley Stadium.

“As an amateur and a professional boxer, I have achieved everything I dreamed of, and now I want to start my second career after sports.

“I would have never imagined that I would have such a long and incredibly successful boxing career. I’m very thankful for this. Thanks to everyone who has always supported me, especially my family, my team and my many fans.”

Klitschko turned pro in 1996 after winning gold at the Atlanta Olympic Games, and he recovered from an early defeat to Ross Puritty to win the WBO’s heavyweight title in 2003.

Corrie Sanders stopped him early to take the belt in 2003, and when Lamon Brewster handed him a similar defeat three fights later Klitschko regrouped and rebuilt his style under trainer Emanuel Steward.

The new approach proved so successful Klitschko went 11 years without defeat and accumulated three of the four recognised world titles before his shock points loss to Tyson Fury in late 2015.

A rematch with Fury failed to materialise and he instead took on the challenge of halting the Joshua juggernaut, flooring the younger champion before succumbing to a late stoppage.

Reflecting on his defeat in June Klitschko said: “I never thought I would say such a thing, but: in defeat, I achieved much greater success than I would have had I won.

“Fans and sports enthusiasts worldwide are celebrating my performance and showing me their appreciation. Even my opponent expressed his respect for me.”
