Mr Yakubu Dati, the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), on Wednesday said arts and crafts makers were free to display their wares at the airports. Dati was reacting to the claim by Kanayo Chukwumezie, the President, African Art and Heritage Association (AACHA), Abuja, that its members were denied space to display their goods. “There are procedures for doing it; we do not deny anybody from displaying their wares at the airport,” he said. “Anybody who wants to do business at the airport will have to write a request to us and then we process it. A UNICEF report, released on Wednesday in New York, reveals that the number of children under 5 who die of preventable causes has dropped by more than 50 per cent since 1990. It noted, however, that in spite of the drop, the goal set in 2000 to reduce the number by two-thirds has not been met. The report found that while the lives of 48 million children had been saved in the last 15 years, only 24 of the world’s 81 poorest countries had cut the figure by two-thirds. The number of illiterate Nigerians is estimated at 54 million, out of the estimated population of 180 million people, the federal government revealed on Tuesday. The Lagos State Government on Sunday restated its determination to restrict trailers and articulated vehicles from plying the metropolis between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. to prevent accidents. Oluseyi Whenu, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, said this at a meeting in Lagos with the leadership of the various transport unions in the State. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Presidency were locked in a war of words on Sunday over the invasion of the Akwa Ibom State Government House last Friday by officials of the Directorate of State Security Services (DSS). While the opposition party regarded the invasion as a sign that Nigeria is on a fast descent into dictatorship, the Presidency said that the party is imagining “vain things”, a consequence of its comprehensive defeat at the last general elections. Two community leaders were on Sunday found dead at the outskirt of the Namnai Village in Gassol local government area of Taraba State. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has begun the process of recovering over $7 billion in over-deducted tax benefits from joint venture partners on major capital projects and another $2.46 billion from inflated contracts at its subsidiary, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).
