Politics54 Million Nigerians Are Illiterate by storchsbm(op): 11:40am On Sep 09, 2015
The number of illiterate Nigerians is estimated at 54 million, out of the estimated population of 180 million people, the federal government revealed on Tuesday.

The Acting Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Hindatu Abdullahi, presented the figures at the flag-off of the 2015 International Literacy Day celebration, and called for concerted efforts to improve the negative trend.

Recently, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) announced that over 757 million adults worldwide still lacked basic literacy skills, with about two-third of them being women, mostly from Nigeria and other third-world countries.

Nigeria athletics queen, Blessing Okagbare, has been banned from representing Nigeria at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

The ban by the National Sports Commission and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria follows Okagbare’s decision to skip the 2015 All Africa Games.

Okagbare had a dismal outing at the IAAF World championships in Beijing, China. She claimed that injury forced her out of the competition, where Nigerians expected her to win a medal having run the third fastest time of the season in the 100m.
