Science/Technology / Best Smart Displays For 2021: Amazon, Google And More by stownnert: 1:39pm On Jan 02, 2021
The smart display industry has flourished in recent years, with the Amazon Echo Show 8 and the Google Nest Hub (formerly the Google Home Hub) at the forefront of the screen wars. In addition, Amazon's new Echo Show 10 will be adding a new contender to the field soon. It makes sense that there are almost a dozen smart displays on the market: They're a great combo made up of the always-listening voice assistant (like you'd find in a smart speaker) and a touchscreen for watching videos, controlling your smart home devices, adding things to your to-do lists and more. The Google Nest Hub Max even adds in a face-tracking camera that can display personalized bits of information whenever this smart device recognizes you.

There are plenty of considerations that go into which smart display is right for you. Do you want one that offers video chat and video calling? Or that connects with Amazon's Alexa or the Google Home app? Does it need to be able to control your smart light bulbs and smart plugs? Is audio performance a factor (in case you need music for a dance party)? These are all factors you should keep in mind.

If you're looking to upgrade your current smart speaker, or you're just starting your smart home and you find the touchscreen appealing, here are the best smart displays available now. We'll update this list periodically.
Best smart display overall
Google Nest Hub

You can often find the Nest Hub (formerly called the Google Home Hub) on sale for $100 or less, making this Google smart display device an affordable entry point for the category. It's also the smartest and best overall, making the lower price even more appealing.

Thanks to the built-in Google Assistant, the Nest Hub responds to all of the same voice command options as the Google Home Mini smart speaker. The touchscreen is a little small at 7 inches, but the adaptive brightness makes pictures look particularly great. Google will even customize a slideshow of family pics as your screensaver.

You can also control your smart home devices, like your smart doorbell, with an intuitively designed control panel. Unlike most of the other smart displays (and unlike its new big brother, the Nest Hub Max), the Nest Hub doesn't have a camera, but that might be a bonus if you have privacy concerns and want to put it on your bedside table.
The other best smart display
Amazon Echo Show 8

For a long time, the Nest Hub occupied pride of place on this list, thanks to its photo display aesthetic, pleasant user interface and more naturalistic voice assistant. But as we venture ever deeper into the coronavirus pandemic, the Echo Show 8's camera -- and its ability to video chat -- becomes a more important deciding point for would-be customers. And that's one feature the Nest Hub simply doesn't have. Add that to Amazon Alexa's growing smarts, and the Show 8 has been upgraded to share the "best display" honor with the Nest hub.

With the Show 8, Amazon's Alexa will respond to your voice control and voice commands, plus you can use the screen to play games, browse recipes, watch movies and Prime Video trailers, control your smart home and more. The 8-inch screen on this Amazon Alexa smart display device is small enough to stay out of the way, but big enough that you won't have to squint. It also includes a physical camera shutter for privacy.
Best full-size display
Lenovo Smart Display

If you want a 10-inch touchscreen powered by Google Assistant, the Lenovo Smart Display looks elegant and features the same smarts as the Nest Hub. Lenovo actually offers three different models with 10, 8 and 7 inch screens. The 10-inch $250 smart display has a bamboo back that's particularly well suited for the kitchen.

The Lenovo Smart Display was actually the first smart display to debut with Google Assistant built-in and it's still one of the best. You still get Google's smart-home control panels and recipe guides, plus the Lenovo display has a smart camera for video calls and a physical shutter to cover it if you want privacy.

Phones / Pixel 5 Launch Date And Pricing Revealed In New Leak, Pixel 4a 5G Will Launch On by stownnert: 9:30pm On Sep 04, 2020
The next set of Pixel phones will arrive earlier than expected – Vodafone Germany already lists them in its internal database (and someone managed to snap a pic of it). There’s some bad news, however, a Pixel 5 XL is nowhere to be seen.

This means we are only getting the Pixel 5 – it and the Pixel 4a 5G will be unveiled on September 25. Both in Just Black color, at least from what is visible in the info table (though previous reports said that the 5 will be available in two colors).

According to German YouTuber Techcheck, the Pixel 5 will cost €630 (including VAT, which is 16% in Germany). That seems a bit steep for a phone with a Snapdragon 765G chipset, doesn’t it? For comparison, the Pixel 4 started at €730 and is currently €530 with an 8-series Snapdragon SoC.

The Pixel 4a 5G will be €487, almost €150 more than the vanilla 4a. However, despite the similarity in their names, the two phones are actually quite different – the 4a 5G is very close to what a Pixel 5 XL would have been.

It will be powered by the same Snapdragon 765G (up from 730G on the vanilla 4a). And it will have a larger display, 6.1-6.2 inches (up from 5.81”). A photo of the phone also reveals that it will have an ultrawide camera too. So, the only thing that is (probably) missing is the 90 Hz refresh rate for the display.

Webmasters / Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4512941 Causing High CPU Usage by stownnert: 12:08am On Sep 15, 2019
The most recent cumulative update released by Microsoft for Windows 10 version 1903, also referred to as May 2019 Update, is reportedly causing high CPU usage on some devices.

The culprit appears to be the SearchUI.exe process associated with the Cortana digital assistant, which according to user reports, now uses up to 40 percent of the processor even when idle after installing cumulative update KB4512941.

Microsoft is yet to acknowledge the problem, and restarting the PC doesn’t seem to make any difference, as the spike in CPU usage is experienced again after booting to desktop.
"How to fix the bug"

A user investigation of the bug on reddit reveals that the normal behavior can be restored by deleting a specific key in the registry.

“If the registry entry shown below is set (which prevents the Start menu search from sending local search queries to Bing), then this causes the above high CPU symptoms with SearchUI.exe,” reddit user DefinitelyYou explains.

“If this registry key is deleted, then the CPU usage goes back to normal when the machine is restarted, but obviously it means all local search queries are sent to Bing again. Therefore, in order to disable Start menu search from sending search queries to Bing, you have to fall back to blocking it with the firewall—instead of using the registry key—which is not ideal as it’s a somewhat blunt method.”

The registry key is called BingSearchEnabled and is located at the following address:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search

The problem only affects Windows 10 version 1903, and no other Windows 10 releases are affected.

The easiest workaround is to uninstall the cumulative update altogether, albeit this means you’ll miss out on the latest improvements released by Microsoft. Dealing with the aforementioned registry key is the way to go for now, though for the time being, it’s not really the most convenient solution for beginners.

Webmasters / AMD Outs New Radeon Adrenalin Edition Graphics Drivers by stownnert: 12:51pm On Aug 13, 2019
AMD has announced the availability of a new version of its Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition Graphics driver, namely the 19.8.1 (19.30.01.29) package, which adds Microsoft PlayReady 3.0 on Radeon RX 5700 series graphics products, and more.

Specifically speaking, the current release fixes certain Radeon Chill settings bugs, and make sure Radeon RX 5700 GPUs won’t experience a black screen or flickering when applying auto overclocking memory with games or applications running in fullscreen.

In addition to that, version 19.8.1 fixes the slight performance impact that Radeon AntiLag has in some games, and correct the black clips issue recorded with Radeon ReLive Radeon RX 5700 cards (experienced only on Windows 7).

However, AMD’s update might still experience a few problems with Radeon RX 5700 and Radeon VII cards, Radeon Performance Metrics, Radeon Overlay, and Radeon ReLive features, just like described in the Release Notes below.

In terms of compatibility, besides a supported GPU, take into account that your configuration must be running a 64-bit variant of Microsoft’s Windows 7 or 10 operating systems. There are two files available, one for each platform.

Therefore, remove any previous version present on your computer, save and run the appropriate package for your system, wait for all files required to be made available, and follow all instructions displayed on the screen for a complete upgrade.

With this in mind, if you consider applying this release, download AMD Radeon Adrenalin Edition Graphics Driver 19.8.1, install it and perform a reboot once finished. Also, check back with us to stay “updated one minute ago.”
