The University of Lagos (UNILAG) says a senior lecturer, Dr Samuel Ojogbo, is the subject of an active investigation following a complaint filed by a 20-year-old undergraduate. According to police sources, the 300-level student formally reported on August 28, 2025, alleging that the lecturer assaulted her in his office on August 22, 2025, around midday. The student was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for medical care. UNILAG management confirms it is aware of the case and that it has been formally reported to the police. The university’s Safeguarding Centre is providing support and counselling to the student. Speaking for the institution, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of UNILAG’s Communication Unit, said an investigative panel has been constituted to review the allegations. She noted that the university will make the panel’s findings public upon conclusion of its inquiry. “The University of Lagos remains committed to a safe and supportive environment for all students. A thorough investigation will be carried out, and justice will be ensured,” Alaga-Ibraheem stated, urging students and staff to promptly report any harassment or misconduct through the school’s established reporting channels. She reiterated UNILAG’s zero tolerance for sexual harassment. Editor’s note: These are allegations under investigation. No charges or findings have been announced at the time of publication. [Source]

Following a purported vote of no confidence against some party leaders, the Osun PDP has issued a strong warning and summoned stakeholders from the Ife Federal Constituency. The state leadership has urged all members to immediately suspend any actions that could escalate tensions, stressing the importance of following the party’s established conflict resolution channels. In a statement released on Tuesday, the State Chairman, Hon. Sunday Bisi, announced that the party has directed that the current status quo be maintained. This is to allow for internal efforts to address all grievances amicably. The party also used the statement to reaffirm its full respect and confidence in its prominent leaders, including Prince Kola Adewusi, the Deputy Governor of Osun State, and Prof. Wale Oladipo, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees. The party described them as pillars and insisted that any disagreements involving them must be handled through proper party channels, not through public declarations. “The PDP in Osun is guided by laws, guidelines, and established processes. Any attempt to undermine these principles or weaken the authority of the party will not be condoned,” Hon. Bisi stated, adding that a meeting has been called to reinforce unity. “We strongly appeal to all parties in Ife land to sheath their swords and embrace peace,” he concluded, emphasizing the need for discipline and unity within the party. The average cooking gas price in Nigeria has recorded a monthly decrease. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its "LPG Price Watch for July 2025," the average cost to refill a 12.5 kg cylinder fell to ₦20,609.48 in July, a notable reduction from the ₦21,010.56 recorded in June 2025. This modest decline marks a 1.91% reduction in prices from the previous month. However, a year-on-year analysis from the NBS report reveals a different picture, with the price of a 12.5kg cylinder still standing at a significant 44.51% increase compared to ₦14,261.57 in July 2024. The NBS data further highlights the disparities in cost across the country. States that recorded the highest prices for LPG during this period were Imo, Delta, and Rivers, while residents in Kebbi, Nasarawa, and Kwara enjoyed the lowest prices. With the current economic challenges in Nigeria, the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has stated that state governments have no justification for not paying civil servants more than the ₦70,000 minimum wage. The Director General of NECA, Adewale Smatt-Oyerinde, made this assertion on Channels Television’s "The Morning Brief," emphasizing that increased federal revenue has rendered the "inability to pay" argument invalid. Smatt-Oyerinde explained that given the rising cost of living and the burden of fuel prices, no state should remain at the ₦70,000 mark. While acknowledging efforts by some states to provide alternatives like CNG buses, he stressed that more action is needed to address core issues such as food security and shelter. The DG argued that once these fundamental needs are met, the focus would shift from the minimum wage's quantity to its actual purchasing power. He underscored the pivotal role of workers in both the public and private sectors as key drivers of the economy. According to Smatt-Oyerinde, improving their productivity and motivation is essential, and this requires addressing their basic needs. He likened the civil service to an "engine that drives the system," highlighting that it is in the best interest of state governments to ensure this engine is well-maintained and its needs are met. The NECA DG concluded that compensation is inextricably linked to productivity. He pointed out that workers should not be treated as a commodity but as a vital part of the economy. His comments follow President Bola Tinubu's signing of the minimum wage bill into law in July 2024, which increased the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000. While some states have already surpassed this mark, such as Imo (₦104,000), Ebonyi (₦90,000), and Lagos (₦85,000), the NECA DG’s statement serves as a call for a broader commitment to worker welfare across the nation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1acc2vsUDpM source: https://dependable.ng/nigerian-states-urged-to-go-beyond-70000-minimum-wage-says-neca-dg/ cc ; mynd44, nlfpmod

Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has fired back at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for his criticism of the recent local government elections in Rivers State. Atiku had spoken out against the election results, which saw the All Progressives Congress (APC) win 20 local government areas (LGAs) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secure three. The total number of votes for the winning council chairmen across the 23 LGAs was 2,028,871. Atiku claimed the results were not a true reflection of the will of the Rivers people and accused a "powerful cabal" of attempting to undermine democracy in the state, urging the opposition to reject the outcome. In a sharp rebuke, Olayinka took to X (formerly Twitter) to dismiss Atiku's remarks as "nonsensical." He labeled Atiku a "permanent presidential runner" and questioned his moral authority to comment on the elections, referencing an incident where Atiku allegedly deleted a tweet condemning the murder of Deborah in Sokoto. Olayinka's post read: "Permanent Presidential Runner, Atiku Abubakar is condemning Rivers State LG elections. Issorite. The same Atiku, who did a tweet condemning the murder of Deborah in Sokoto, and quickly deleted it? Someone who is not bold, courageous and honest enough to condemn murder that was openly done, is condemning LG elections. Nonsensical Nonsense!" Olayinka argued that a leader who lacked the courage to condemn a public murder should not be commenting on local elections. His statement highlights the ongoing political tensions between the two camps and adds a new layer to the public discourse surrounding the Rivers State elections. Born on March 17, 1936, in Atani, Anambra State, Nigeria. Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe was destined to become one of Africa's most influential and prolific musicians. Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe is regarded as the king of highlife music. Hailing from a humble background, Osadebe navigated the complexities of life, ultimately emerging as a shining example of the power of resilience, hard work, and immense talent. His journey from obscurity to global recognition is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the African people. He attended the prestigious St. Charles College in Onitsha, where he honed his academic skills and gained exposure to Western education and culture. However, his love for music had begun to take root at a tender age. As a child, he was captivated by the traditional rhythms and melodies of his Igbo heritage. His parents, especially his mother, encouraged his musical inclinations, as they recognized the gift their son possessed. The band quickly gained popularity, as their sound resonated with audiences across Nigeria. The Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970) was a dark period in Nigeria's history. Despite the challenges, he continued to create music, providing solace and hope to those who were suffering. During this time, he released several songs that reflected the pain and suffering of the Nigerian people, as well as their resilience and determination to overcome adversity. King of Highlife Music In 1970, Osadebe released "Osondi Owendi," a song that catapulted him to national fame and marked the beginning of his reign as the king of highlife music. The song, which translates to "One man's meat is another man's poison," was a celebration of life and diversity. It quickly became a massive hit, selling over 500,000 copies and establishing Osadebe as one of Nigeria's most popular musicians. Osadebe continued to produce hit after hit, earning several awards and accolades for his contributions to Nigerian music.
