A similar issue occured in the 1966 coup. why some people term it an igbo coup even though almost all the tribes in Nigeria were involved is because the majority of the ploters were igbos. It was the killing between the then premier of the western region, akintola and awo supporters during operation wetie, and the illegal detaintion of awo that led to the coup. Some army officers staged the coup to save the Yoruba nation from putting an end their race. At the end of it, some people mainly the Yorubas termed it an igbo coup, just as you have just said. SMH

I am a northerner and a Muslim and we will never forget the January 1966 Igbo coup that Nzougwu murdered Ahmadu Bello, his family members and the security details who are all Northerners.

Nzougwu was an adopted son of Ahmadu Bello and was partly raised by Ahmadu Bello who northernised Nzougwu and put him in the army because Nzougwu was born in the north and he used northern slot to enter the army with the influence of Ahmadu Bello
