In a revealing statement before the National Assembly, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, disclosed that a staggering 90% of expatriates working in roles meant for Nigerians do not possess the required work permits. The minister made this revelation on Wednesday, January 15, while defending the 2024 budget of the Interior Ministry before the joint committees of the National Assembly.


The issue of expatriates taking over jobs that Nigerians are qualified to perform has long been a contentious topic in the country. Adams Oshiomhole, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, did not mince words as he criticized the Ministry for allowing an influx of foreign workers into Nigeria.

“No country in the world allows all manner of people to come under all kinds of guises and be given visas and whatever it is to reside in the country,” Oshiomhole stated. “Visit the commercial centers, and you will find expatriates selling tables, chairs, bread – jobs that Nigerians can clearly do.”

In response, Minister Tunji-Ojo acknowledged the challenges, emphasizing the need for effective migration management. He revealed that the Ministry is working on an automation process to address the issue of illegal work permits and improve border management.

“We try to solve compound problems by solving them in silos… 90% of the people that you spoke about do not have permits, and that is the essence of the automation process that we are doing,” the minister explained. He further stressed that effective border management is the foundation of any country’s migration system, a principle Nigeria must adopt to tackle the problem.


Tunji-Ojo also hinted at underlying issues that cannot be discussed publicly but require closed-door sessions for resolution. This suggests that the problem of expatriates taking over Nigerian jobs may be more complex than it appears on the surface.

An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has granted a former wife of Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola, and two others, standing trial before it for alleged manslaughter, N10 million bail each.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that also granted bail are Oriyomi Hamzat, a broadcaster and CEO, Agidigbo Radio FM, Ibadan, and Abdullahi Fasasi, the school principal of Islamic High School.

Edo taskforce sacks official caught on tape struggling for car steering with a driver

The Coordinator of the Edo State Public Response Safety Team, Kelly Okungbowa has announced the dismissal of an official of the agency seen in a viral video dragging the steering with a bus driver in Benin city.

In a 27-seconds viral video which surfaced online on Thursday, the unnamed official of the safety team was seen trying to stop a vehicle by dragging the steering with the driver.
The passengers in the car could be heard begging the driver to stop while also pleading with the PRST official to stop struggling for the steering with the driver as their lives were in danger.

While reacting to the video, Okungbowa said that the approach of the officer was wrong while noting that PRST was not the enemies of the drivers.

“First of all, I want apologise to the general public for the conduct of our officer in that viral video. There is no perfect society and the person that erred in that video has been sacked to serve as deterrent to every member of the Commission.

I wish to tell the drivers that we are not their enemies, but their friends. Ours is to make sure that we do what is right by ensuring that there is order in Edo State, most especially in Benin City.

The drivers know where they are supposed to stop, where they don’t have to stop and where to pick passengers and drop them.

We are tired of having this conflict with the drivers every time. I have been doing this job with the officers here during the previous administration. I am appealing to the public to report any erring officer to the commission. I can’t be everywhere at the same time, but I assure anyone found wanting that he or she will be dealt with,” the PRST coordinator said.
