This guy built Africa’s largest mobile money hub: with over 320 million connected wallets. But when he started, he just wanted to send money to his mom in Benin. Meet Dare Okoudjou. [url= https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_liSw5x28Rw[/url] Dare is committed to building access across Africa - by linking mobile money wallets to the rest of the world. This guy built Africa’s largest mobile money hub: with over 320 million connected wallets. But when he started, he just wanted to send money to his mom in Benin. Dare left Benin at 18 to school in Morocco and later France. Dare would get calls from his mother in Benin, who needed money. But sending that money was notoriously difficult. In France, he used a cash-to-cash process, where he would go into the post office, give them cash and two weeks later it would be available for his mother in Benin. When he lived in the US, it was even harder. He would physically give cash to people flying back to Benin - the fastest option at the time. While money transfer was difficult, Dare noticed a contrast: making calls and sending texts was getting easier. And cheaper. And in 2005, MTN (Africa’s biggest telecom) made an announcement that set Dare’s thinking (and eventually, MFS Africa) in motion. MTN had announced it would launch MTN Banking - banking users through mobile. And the telecom guy in Dare realised: If you could move data, then you could move value. And if data (ie, texts, calls, media) could be sent between different mobile operators, then so could money. Dare joined MTN in South Africa to launch mobile money across the continent. And over time, the realisation gripped him, and his vision was set. In 2009, he left to start MFS Africa - building a layer to connect mobile money wallets with services across the world. And today, MFS Africa has taken over the continent. With: 📲 320 million mobile money connections on its platform 🌍 Coverage of 35 African Countries 💰Four acquisitions: Sochitel, Beyonic, Baxi by MFS Africa, and Global Technology Partners (GTP) (a $34 million acquisition of a US Company - one of the first of its kind from Africa). 🚀 Raised a $200 millions Series C from Admaius Capital Partners, AfricInvest Group, CommerzVentures, Vitruvian Partners and AXA Investment Managers But it wasn’t always world domination for MFS Africa. It took years before take off. At one point, MFS Africa only had $10,000 left in the bank. Dare's relentless optimism and his grit saw him build one of Africa's most important companies. |
