Politics / NANS To Higher Institutions: Enhance Standards Of Your Campus, Health Facilities by Sunnyeditor: 9:41am
NANS to higher institutions: Enhance standards of your campus, health facilities

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has called on all higher institutions in the country to improve the standards of their campus and healthcare facilities.

In a letter addressed to all higher institutions in the country, the Vice-President Special Duties of the NANS, Ezinwa Ahaneku Valentine Nzubechi, urged them to at all times, prioritize the well-being of their students.

The letter read in full: "As the Vice-President Special Duties of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), I bring to your attention a matter of utmost importance that concerns the well-being and academic environment of our esteemed students across the nation.

"In recent times, there has been a growing concern about the quality of campus hostels in our higher institutions. It is imperative that we collectively address this issue, ensuring that the living conditions of our students are conducive to their physical and academic well-being. Our appeal is a sincere call to action, seeking your collaboration in enhancing the standards of campus hostels.

"We implore each institution to assess and improve the structural integrity of campus hostels. Dilapidated buildings pose risks to the safety and security of students, and it is our shared responsibility to create an environment that fosters both learning and well-being.

"A reliable supply of electricity and water is fundamental to the daily lives of students. Institutions are urged to invest in sustainable infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted power supply and access to clean water. This basic necessity contributes significantly to the comfort and hygiene of students.

"The state of medical centers within our institutions demands urgent attention. Adequate funding should be allocated to ensure these centers are well-equipped with necessary medical supplies and technological equipment. This initiative is pivotal in providing prompt and efficient healthcare services to our students.

"Medical centers should maintain a consistent supply of essential drugs. It is our collective duty to prioritize the health of our students by ensuring that they have access to the medications required for their well-being. This step is crucial in addressing health-related issues promptly.

"The integration of necessary technological equipment in medical centers is paramount. This will not only facilitate accurate diagnoses but also expedite the process of addressing health-related concerns, thereby safeguarding the overall health and academic performance of our students.

"This call to action is not just an appeal to the individual institutions; it extends to the Minister of Education, Vice Chancellors, Rectors, and all education stakeholders in the federation. We request your collaboration in ensuring the implementation of these improvements across all higher institutions in Nigeria.

"Your support in advocating for and facilitating the necessary funding and policies for these improvements is pivotal. We trust that you will champion this cause for the benefit of the entire student community.

"As leaders of our esteemed institutions, we implore you to prioritize the well-being of our students. Consider this call to action as an opportunity to contribute significantly to the development of a conducive academic environment.

"We anticipate a collaborative effort to address these concerns promptly, creating a positive and conducive learning environment for our students. Let us collectively invest in the well-being of the future leaders of our nation.

"Thank you for your attention and commitment to the betterment of higher education in Nigeria."

The Prime Minister of BRGIE, Simon Ekpa disclosed this on Tuesday in a statement.

According to the Finnish-based lawyer and a separatist, Ekpa, the number of Biafracoin users had increased massively since the launch of the website on 21 March, 2024.

He stressed that the Biafracoin ROI offer surpassed that of other cryptocurrency platforms which stood at 7 per cent.

He added that users and prospective users should reach out to Biafracoin on occasion of challenges.

"Everyday people reach out to our help line +1 919 627 2134 to receive remote assistance in setting up their crypto wallets and buying Biafracoin. The number of users is difficult to divide because of the anonymous nature of crypto.

Business / Tourism Ministry, NIHOTOUR To Upskill Tour Operators/guides In Ekiti by Sunnyeditor: 3:46pm On Mar 28
Tourism Ministry, NIHOTOUR to upskill tour operators/guides in Ekiti

The Federal Ministry of Tourism in conjunction with National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) will train tour operators and tour guides in Ekiti State, as part of the EcoGenesis Incubator Series.

This was contained in a statement made available to Vanguard on Thursday by the Public Relations Officer, NIHOTOUR, Joesef Karim in Abuja.

According to the statement, the upskilling training will hold for two days, specifically on the 31st of March and the 1st of April 2024. Ekiti State Bureau for Tourism Development will host the training and nominate local tour operators and tour guides to be trained.

This latest EcoGenesis Incubator Series training in Ekiti State is coming on the hills of the success of the maiden EcoGenesis Incubator training recently held in Makurdi, Benue State.

It will be recalled that EcoGenesis Incubator Series is an initiative of the Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Lola Ade-John.

The EcoGenesis Incubator Series is a sustainable tourism entrepreneurship program that targets residents of tourist host communities including women, youths and small cottage services that form parts of destination’s experiences for visitors.

This is the second edition of the program which is being executed across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Speaking on the EcoGenesis Incubator training in Ekiti, the Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Lola Ade-John stated “the capacity of host community tourism and hospitality operators, including tour operators and tour guides, are central to overall destination experiences of tourists, both domestic and inbound tourists.

"Therefore, it is essential that the Government provides facilities for basic training, retraining and upskilling of personnel working in the sector, across the country.

“With the EcoGenesis Incubator Series, the Government is providing a dynamic platform that will catalyze innovation and drive economic empowerment of citizens and service providers in tourism host communities and destinations. This will eventually lift many out of poverty by leveraging on the abundant tourism opportunities inherent in our communities across the Nation.”

The National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) has been massively involved in delivering the various trainings and skills development programmes of EcoGenesis Incubator Series, since the inception of the programme.

NIHOTOUR is established by an Act of Parliament to train, certify and register all personnel in Nigeria’s hospitality, travel, and tourism sectors.

The Director General of NIHOTOUR, Nura Sani Kangiwa, while commenting on the scheduled Ekiti State EcoGenesis Incubator upskilling training remarked that, “Globally, in tourism development management, tour operators and tour guides are the levers of the destination’s tourism push and pull factors.

"It is the industry actions of tour operators and tour guides that determines tourists’ arrivals and receipts in host communities.

"Tourism products, both domestic and inbound, are generally packaged by tour operators and guides resident in the destination.”

It is noteworthy that NIHOTOUR is the coordinator of the hospitality and tourism sector skills council of Nigeria (HTSSCN) - an umbrella organization consisting of tourism and hospitality trade associations and allied operators in the country.

The HTSSCN exists to fill the demand skills gap in Nigeria’s tourism and hospitality occupational trades.

Politics / Declaring Simon Ekpa Wanted Sessionist Won't Stop Biafra Independence Declaratio by Sunnyeditor: 6:44pm On Mar 24
Declaring Simon Ekpa wanted sessionist won't stop Biafra Independence declaration in 2024 —BRGIE

The Biafra Republic Government In-Exile says the declaration of its Prime Minister Simon Ekpa 'wanted sessionist' by the Nigerian Defence Headquarters will not stop the declaration of Biafra independent state on 2nd December 2024.

BRGIE disclosed in a statement on Sunday.

Recall that on Friday, the Nigerian Army, in a statement by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba declared Ekpa and 96 others wanted over insecurity.

However, BRGIE insisted it would not deter it from seeking a Biafran referendum.

Accordingly, BRGIE noted that the action by the Nigerian Army showed a green light for Biafra Liberation.

BRGIE said that its leader Ekpa is facing similar persecucion like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nelson Mandela.

It noted that insecurity in Nigeria is unconnected to Ekpa, instead, it is perpetuated by some governors and actors within the Nigerian Government to amass allocated security votes.

BRGIE stressed that insecurity in Nigeria is caused by years of misrule and injustices on citizens and has given birth to anarchy nationwide.

The Government urged Biafrans to remain resolute in their quest for Liberation and Referendum.

BRGIE said persons who do not want to see Biafra Independence come are persona non-grata in Biafra territory.

It added that the Biafra government would not waste time in challenging the declaration of Ekpa wanted in any Nigerian court.

"The declaration of Simon Ekpa 'wanted' by Nigeria DHQ showed that there is a greenlight to Biafra independence, right from the history of freedom fighting, when the oppressors declared that the leader of a freedom fighting movement a terrorist showed that there is a greenlight.

"Nnamdi Azikiwe was declared wanted at one point and was also jailed together with Obafemi Awolowo, yet Nigeria regained its independence from Great Britain. Nelson Mandela was also declared a wanted by the apartheid regime but was later celebrated. I called on Biafra to remain resolved and strong. Simon Ekpa is not a wanted person as claimed by the Nigerian Government because I am a Biafra.

"Some people in Nigeria sponsor the insecurity. Insecurity was there before Simon Ekpa became the leader of the Biafra Republic. I am not the cause of insecurity in the North, southwest, or middlebelt. The major sponsors of insecurity are the governors, and the Federal Government of Nigeria is complicit. They do it to amass security votes.

"The causes of insecurity are long-term misrule and injustices that have melted on the citizens. This has given birth to anarchy all over Nigeria.

"The declaration that Simon Ekpa wanted was because BRGIE had set a date for the Biafra declaration of the restoration of the independent state of Biafra on 2nd December.

"It is elements within the Nigerian Government that are sponsoring insecurity and terrorism in Nigeria. We have seen the Nigerian Government rehabilitating terrorists, allowing bandits to go on kidnapping sprees across the country.

"The Declaration of Ekpa wanted cannot stop the declaration of Biafra independence this year. We will continue to delegitimize Nigeria within Biafra territory", BRGIE stated.

"The Biafra government will not challenge the declaration of the Prime Minister of Biafra, Simon Ekpa wanted sessionist by the Nigerian Army", BRGIE stated.

Understanding Staking and Decentralized Finance at Biafra Buy/Stake Inc
What does Staking entail?

Staking within the realm of cryptocurrency involves the act of securing or immobilizing a designated quantity of tokens in a digital wallet to actively support the functionality and governance of a blockchain network. In exchange for their involvement, participants earn incentives, usually in the form of supplementary tokens. It parallels the concept of accruing interest in a conventional banking setting, albeit within the context of blockchain technology.

What Rewards Can I Obtain Through Staking with USBT?

With the USBT staking program, you can earn rewards on their staked tokens with our structured framework:
- After a 0-hours lockup period, you start receiving rewards based on the ROI at the time of your initial investment.

What Risks Should I Be Aware of When Staking?

Although staking presents opportunities for rewards, it's essential to consider potential risks:
- Market Volatility: Fluctuations in token value due to market conditions may affect the final value of staked tokens, potentially resulting in gains or losses.
- Liquidity Concerns: Tokens committed to staking are not readily available for trading or liquidation, which could pose challenges if immediate access to funds is required.
- Smart Contract Vulnerabilities: Inherent to blockchain activities, smart contracts governing staking operations may contain bugs or vulnerabilities, exposing staked assets to potential risks.

Legal Disclaimer

Blockchain investments, including staking, are subject to high market risk. Biafra Buy/Stake Inc. does not guarantee any returns on staking investments. We advise our community members to exercise due diligence and caution and to invest responsibly within their financial limits.

What is Decentralized Finance (DeFi) ?
Decentralized Finance (DeFi) embodies a suite of financial services built atop blockchain technology, primarily leveraging Ethereum. These platforms facilitate lending, borrowing, trading, and yield farming of cryptocurrencies, eliminating the necessity for conventional financial intermediaries such as banks. DeFi endeavours to establish an inclusive, transparent, and accessible financial ecosystem.

Additional Points to Note:
- Network Support: Staking plays a pivotal role in upholding the integrity and security of the blockchain network. Your active involvement contributes to its overall robustness.
- Tax Considerations: Keep in mind that staking rewards might trigger tax obligations depending on your jurisdiction. Seek guidance from a tax professional for tailored advice.
- Educational Resources: We advocate for the utilization of educational materials to gain a comprehensive understanding of blockchain technology, staking mechanisms, and DeFi protocols.
Remember, your engagement in staking and DeFi transcends mere investment; it signifies a commitment to fostering a decentralized future. This aligns with the mission of Biafra Coin Inc. to empower communities through renewable energy solutions and equitable financial frameworks.

Jobs/Vacancies / Tourism Ministry Announces Plans To Train, Empower Community Women by Sunnyeditor: 9:31pm On Mar 10
Tourism Ministry announces plans to train, empower community women

The Federal Ministry of Tourism has announced plans to train and empower community women on souvenirs production.

The announcement was contained in a statement by the Public Relations Officer, National Institute of Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), Joesef Karim, in Abuja on Sunday.

According to the statement, the empowerment program called ‘EcoGenesis Incubator’ is for training and empowerment of women and youths that are resident in Nigeria’s tourism host communities across the six-geopolitical zones of the country.

The statement read: “The objective is to offer a dynamic platform that will catalyze innovation and drive economic empowerment by helping the participants to develop, articulate, and refine their skills and tourism products.

“This will eventually lift many out of poverty by leveraging on the abundant tourism opportunities inherent in our communities across the Nation.

“The first series of the ‘EcoGenesis Incubator’ programme will be the training and empowerment of women on tourism souvenirs production, specifically, in jewellery making and rhinestone embellishment.

“It is scheduled to hold in Makurdi, Benue State, on 14th and 15th March 2024. On completion, the trainees will be given tourism entrepreneurial starter-packs to enable them to start their personal jewellery making and rhinestone embellishment businesses targeting visitors and tourists in Benue State.

“The honourable Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Lola Ade-John, who only last week on International Women’s Day charged women to seize opportunities in the tourism economy to boost their status, disclosed that, “The EcoGenesis Incubator is a tailored Nigerian tourism enterprise development program designed specifically for women and youth residing in the heart of tourist host communities.

“Through targeted training and empowerment initiatives conducted in rural areas across Nigeria, this program aims to facilitate the emergence of local tourism businesses and service offerings, fostering sustainable development in the country.

“The Minister affirmed that: ‘We are dedicated to forging partnerships with key stakeholders, including the private sector, state governments, and local communities, to cultivate distinctive Nigerian tourism offerings and elevate Nigeria as a premier tourism destination.

“As evidenced by the transformative economic impact of tourism, particularly in emerging economies like Nigeria, the sector’s multiplier effects can significantly enhance the quality of life in host communities while fostering revenue generation for investors, operators, and governmental entities alike.

“The EcoGenesis Incubator series will empower people with occupational skills and eventually lift many out of poverty by harnessing touristy opportunities inherent in tourist host communities. In the coming weeks, the EcoGenesis Incubator programmes will be delivered in a series across the 36 States and the FCT with increasing number of trainees and empowerment packages.

“Since every State in Nigeria has unique hospitality and tourism potential, the EcoGenesis Incubator trainings will be tailored to the peculiarity of the State’s tourist host community and the general destination offerings.

“The maiden EcoGenesis Incubator programme on tourism souvenirs production on jewellery making and rhinestone embellishments will be executed in partnership with the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR).

“The Institute is an agency in the Federal Ministry of Tourism that is established to train, certify, and register all personnel in Nigeria’s hospitality, travel, and tourism sectors.”

Career / Stakeholders Brainstorm Over Challenges Faced By Mining Companies In Plateau by Sunnyeditor: 3:00pm On Mar 10
Stakeholders brainstorm over challenges faced by mining companies in Plateau

In a recent workshop organized by the Special Control Unit against Money Laundering (SCUML) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development in Abuja, mining industry representatives shed light on the challenges faced by tin mining companies in Plateau State.

The workshop, aimed at dealers in precious metals and stones, sparked discussions about the necessity of SCUML registration for various types of mining activities.

Nwakalor Tony, the MD/CEO of Sound Core Group and a Consultant with EFCC's SCUML office, emphasized that tin, a major focus of mining activities in Plateau State, does not fall under the category of precious metals or gemstones.

He urged a more informed approach to the solid mineral sector, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to prevent illicit financial flows and protect the economy.

According to him, “As SCUML is putting a searchlight on designated non-financial business and professions and under that as far as solid minerals sector is concerned, dealers in precious metals and gem stones are those who fall under that category. Tin is not a precious metal, and it is not a gem stone.

“Nigeria can do better in the solid mineral sector, all hands must be on deck. There’s more collaborative action required by all stakeholders such that illicit financial flow and using the sector as a means to devalue our economy will stop our economy. So we need everyone to get more informed about the sector and its potential.”

Fielding questions from our correspondent, Chief Operational Officer of Laurium Mining company, Bolarinwa Ridwan Olalekan, situated at Sho Village Barkin Ladi, Plateau state, said the discrepancy in categorization became apparent when his company was invited by EFCC to provide legal documents, including SCUML registration.

He addressed the misunderstanding, highlighting that certain mining activities, like tin mining, should not be subject to SCUML registration.

He urged SCUML to provide a detailed list of minerals falling under precious metals and stones, ensuring clarity for mining companies and facilitating effective enforcement.

Olalekan also called for greater collaboration among government agencies, including EFCC, the Ministry of Mines, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to tackle challenges faced by legal mining list holders.

He emphasized the need for EFCC’s support in providing a legal mining list, enabling them to combat illegal mining effectively.

Olalekan speaking extensively said, “We are here for a workshop organised by SCUML and EFCC. We were being introduced by the Ministry of Mines to come for the workshop. The workshop is for dealers in precious metals and stone. We are into tin mining it does not fall under that category. But we’ve been in a scene whereby the EFCC invited our own company to come with our legal documents and they also requested for SCUML.

“So we went into the office to present all our documents excluding SCUML. They mandated us to have the SCUML document. But we let them know that tin mining companies and some other companies too that do not fall under the categories of those mining precious metals and stones do not need to register for SCUML.

“But as we are in this workshop, a lot of presentations took place, we were able to clear the air concerning the fact they categorised the mining that falls under the precious metals and stones. Our own type of mining of tin, they were able to clear it that we do not fall under the categories of miners that do not fall under the categories of SCUML registration.

“If the SCUML units can list out the minerals that fall under precious metals and stones. If they can list it out in details and they can share it to different zones where they have their SCUML offices in EFCC, so that their staff will be aware of the minerals that fall under the categories of precious metals and stones.

“So that they will know the companies that will need to be invited for interrogation as far as SCUML is concerned. I think that will be better and will help the whole situation. Our company for instance in Plateau is facing some challenges where we are even seeking the assistance of the EFCC regarding the issue of illegal miners.

“I told them that we have a mining list where the scavengers have been going left and right to scavenge our resources, and we always call the attention of the sector that are concerned and can assist us. Like the Ministry of Mines and NSCDC, they used to come to our aid.

“So if the EFCC can support us too with the legal mining list so that our company can strive. It will be something that we would really love, we would be excited to see them supporting the legal mining list holders. Not that they will be referring to the legal mining list holders as illegal miners.

“If they can come to the site and see what we are facing, they will know the way they can actually assist us in fighting the illegal mining activities around us, not us going for interrogations that can be easily detected online.

“The mining cadastre office is online already that you can easily put any mining ID and verify if the mining list is valid or not rather than stressing us going front and back to interrogate the legal mining list holders or even charging them to court, whereas we have illegal mining activities all over the country. So we will be glad if they can come to our aid to assist us in that area.”

As the workshop concluded, it became evident that a more nuanced approach is required in categorizing mining activities to ensure that regulations are appropriately applied, fostering a more conducive environment for legal mining operations in Nigeria.

"The pilot phase of the project comprises 17 five-story apartment buildings designed to cater to urban living preferences while offering comfort and youthful experiences. Initially launching in Hof City, Abuja, the initiative aims to expand to other major cities across Nigeria.

"Notably, Z Korting is tailored to appeal to the younger demographic, particularly digital nomads seeking a blend of community and innovation.

“In terms of deliverables, first of all, we are starting with 17 blocks for the first cluster.
17 blocks of five story buildings providing approximately a 100 plus apartment so that we can launch the first phase of this project and meet up with our demand.

“Second, we need media support to enlighten people about this, we can only do that with the collaboration of media houses.

“In terms of making sure people enjoy the quality of what we intend to provide, the simple thing to do is to make sure the information is out there, and what this means is that we are going to do a lot of publicity about it,” he said.

In the same vein, the Ojehomon Anetor Director of Business Development, described the project as offering a holistic living experience, encompassing work, leisure, and dining options.

He said, "Given Nigeria's burgeoning youth population, comprising 70% of the total populace, Z Korting fills a crucial gap in the housing market by providing real estate investment opportunities tailored to the younger generation. By offering apartments above basic standards, the initiative aims to empower young professionals to become property owners and generate income from their investments.

"In essence, Z Korting presents an opportunity for young Nigerians to own their future, with homeownership serving as a testament to their achievements and a stepping stone to financial empowerment."

Politics / Ndigbo In Diaspora, Not A Tool For Crisis — Egenti by Sunnyeditor: 12:30pm On Feb 29
Ndigbo in diaspora, not a tool for crisis — Egenti

... says he's not in contention with Nweze

President, Association of Eze Ndigbo 19 Northern States and Abuja, HRH, Eze Dr Uche Egenti has denied allegations in certain sections of the media purporting that the Eze Ndigbo in diaspora is a tool used in breeding crisis between the Igbos and their host Communities.

Egenti, equally dismissed any claims of embezzlement, impropriety, misappropriation by the petitioner, describing it as baseless, unfounded and untrue.

While calling for the investigation of the allegations by the appropriate authorities, he challenged Bar Ifeanyi Nweze to provide evidence or any person that has given him one Naira in running the affairs of the Igbos since he started leading the Igbos.

Recall, that Ohanaeze FCT factional President, Bar Ifeanyichukwu Nweze had last year September petitioned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, demanding the sack of the Eze-Igbos, alleging fraud, deceit and embezzlement of resources by the Eze-Igbos as well as causing crisis in the territory.

In a new twist, Bar Nweze had also accused the Eze-Igbos of lack of transparency and accountability and impoverishing the Igbos in the FCT by converting what belongs to the people to their private pockets.

However, Egenti noted that the Eze-Igbos have been a recipe for promoting culture, peace and harmony between the Igbos in the North and their host communities, adding that it has fostered healthy relationship between the Igbos and other ethnic groups.

Egenti said "I asked him, can you bring any human being to me since I started leading the Igbos that has given me five Naira to run the affairs of the Igbos? Let that person come, produce him. I have been running from my pocket. I want Ifeanyi to produce anybody that has given me 5 Naira. If there is any Senator, Governor, Minister that has given me 5 Naira.

"He wrote a libellous petition against me and Ibe Nwosu that we are causing crisis in Abuja. I wonder why we are causing crisis in Abuja. If we are sponsoring criminality, then as an Igbo man, he is one, because, I sponsored him to be FCT president and Ebonyi state chairman. If i made him chairman and I sponsor criminals, he is one of them. I want the authorities to investigate me and him, let us see who will go behind bars.

"The Igbo prayer he talked about, I sponsored the prayer and nobody gave me one Naira, It is my project. If there is anybody who gave me money, let that person say it.

"Every information there is false and I don't think anybody who goes through what he wrote will believe him.

"The truth of the matter there is that, he knows what he wants to achieve, he is looking for appointment and relevance. I told him, we made you Ohanaeze FCT president without relevance from no where. He is looking for appointment, but for him to think that the only way to achieve it is by destroying the Igbos. He wants to reap Igbos apart and I confronted him.

"By the way, he was impeached for violating the constitution of Ohanaeze. Can he tell the whole world why he was impeached? He destroyed our constitution.

"Ohanaeze as presently constituted and led by Chief Iwuanyanwu told us to harmonize Bar Arua and Okadigbo to complete the tenure of Ebonyi state, he is not mentioned anywhere and not recognized. If your people impeached you and you turn around to blackmailing people, the Eze-Igbos, he thinks, he can continue to blackmail and petition people, he should face his profession, he is not Ohanaeze FCT president.

"He wrote a petition to the IG and seconded it to the CP at the FCT command and the police asked him questions he couldn't answer and threatened to detain him. Police advised him to give peace a chance and stop causing crisis.

"The police told him since they have sacked you, go with those who believe in you and allow these people be, the next day he wrote a petition against the police. We are not in contention with him."

Reacting to this development, Bar. Ifeanyi Nweze, said he is only asking for the accountability and transparency of the affairs of the Igbos in the FCT.

According to him, "Those who want to have kingdoms should go home to the South East and become Eze kings, if they can, and should stop causing confusion in the city.

"I was only asking for transparency and accountability in the affairs of the Igbos in the FCT and nothing more."

Nweze further dismissed claims of factionalization of the association, noting that he was duly elected and was issued a certificate of return.

Benue: Lawyers write Tinubu, DSS, invite EFCC to investigate missing N20bn LGs funds

By Sunnyeditor

A pro-democracy, anti-corruption and justice sector civil society organisation, Global Integrity Crusade Network (GICN), has written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to arrest, interrogate and prosecute the Special Adviser to Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia on Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dennis Akura and others for alleged diversion of local government funds.

The petition which was written on Tuesday, 20th February, 2024, was received and acknowledged yesterday at the headquarters of the the anti graft agency in Abuja.

In the petition also sent to President Bola Tinubu, the Director-General, Department of State Services, DSS and the Media, GICN, a group made up of lawyers, private investigators, human rights activists, media professionals and policy analysts, accused Akura and others of supervising brazen embezzlement and diversion of over N20 Billion being part of aggregate Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds which accrued to the 23 Local Government Councils in Benue State between June to November, 2023.

It said the LG Bureau under Governor Alia has been using some of its staff and privately owned companies to syphon the funds meant for local governments in the state.

GICN further stated that it had been inundated with complaints and documents from whistleblowers showing that the office of the Special Adviser to Governor Alia on Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has become a conduit pipe for high level corrupt practices, massive fraud and other sundry offences which prompted its petition to the anti-graft commission.

“From the records attached as APPENDIX 2A and 2B, the aggregate FAAC allocation received in the State Joint Local Government Account (SJLGA), maintained pursuant to Section 162(6) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) for onward disbursement to the 23 Local Government Councils within the period under review totals N55, 897,592,592.81 only.

"Out of the above sum, only N35,849,988,725.37 was disbursed to the 23 Local Government Councils. This left a balance of N20,051,603,867.44, which remains undisbursed, even though the SJLGA is supposed to be a transit account and not a savings account. It happened that Dr. Dennis Akura under the strict directives of Governor Alia, allegedly diverted the aforesaid N35,849,988,725.37 using staff of the Bureau as well as some companies they have registered mainly for that purpose…” the group stated.

The group urged EFCC to ensure that Akura and the others fingered in the petition are brought to justice.

“The EFCC should not allow any of the persons mentioned in this petition to benefit from their own wrongdoing, if fiscal accountability and transparency must be restored in Benue State. We have absolute belief that the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR has zero tolerance for any form of corruption capable of inflicting hardship on the masses and sabotaging the economy of Nigeria as a whole”, it stressed.

In the 17-paragraph petition, the group also attached document evidences of how funds were transferred from various Local Government Council accounts to the account of individual staff of the Bureau and companies, which the lawyers investigated and annexed the full details of owners of each company, with documents from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Global Integrity Crusade Network urged the anti-corruption commission to ensure that if found culpable, the Benue State officials are made to refund the loot, to serve as deterrent to others.

"We hereby pray, pursuant to our statutory obligations to expose corrupt practices under Section 24(d) and (e) of the 1999 Constitution (supra) and the Whistle Blowing Policy of the Federal Government of Nigeria, 2016, that you urgently ARREST, INTERROGATE and PROSECUTE the Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Iornem Alia on Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Dennis Akura together with all his cronies for the serious offences they have committed", the petition read in part.

Career / N'delta Group Warns Against Maligning Of PAP by Sunnyeditor: 3:18pm On Feb 15
The Niger Delta Integrity Group (NDIG) has cautioned against defamatory statements directed at the Presidential Amnesty Programme, PAP, under the leadership of Major General Barry Ndiomu (rtd).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Convener of the NDIG, Dr. Boma Horsfall, faulted online blogs “who do not understand the rudiments of facts-based journalism for allowing their platforms to be used to sponsor misguided articles against the PAP”.

Horsfall urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to tinker with the current peace in Niger Delta.

He said, “Presidency has to be reminded that currently, the most peaceful region of Nigeria is the Niger Delta for obvious reasons, thus, appointing a non-Ijaw Administrator to head the PAP will trigger devastating consequences, which wil be detrimental to the country at large”.

He further called on the Mayor of Urhoboland, Eshanekpe Israel, a.k.a Akpodoro, to refrain from ethnic bigotry and focus on extolling PAP.

To this end, the group urged Ndiomu not to be dismayed by unguarded statements from ‘uneducated miscreants’ and focus on his noble stewardship of the PAP.

Biafra Liberation Army protects southeast, others from attacks by terrorists in Nigeria — BRGIE

The Biafra Government in Exile, a separatist group, says the Biafra Liberation Army's sole objective is to defend and protect southeast and parts of south-south regions against deadly attacks by Jihadist terrorists in Nigeria.

Prime Minister BRGIE, Simon Ekpa, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday amid rising insecurity in Nigeria.

According to him, the creation of BLA by BRGIE on October 20 2023, after its convention, was due to the increased cases of attacks on homes, markets and properties in the Southeast by Terrorists in Nigeria.

He stressed that the Biafra Liberation Army has been established to defend Biafra territory against external aggression and invasion by Terrorists in Nigeria.

The Finland-based lawyer Ekpa noted BLA is to protect Biafrans against unfortunate attacks such as the 2023 Christmas Eve massacre in Plateau state by terrorists in Nigeria.

He added that with the establishment of BLA, insecurity has dropped across the 40 states of Biafra, except those carried out by the Nigerian state actors.

"Following the continued Jihadist Terrorists killings in parts of Nigeria, such as the December 24 2023, Christmas eve massacre in Plateau State, the continued killings in Benue state, the Biafra Liberation Army is to protect Biafrans in Southeast region against senseless and mindless killings by Terrorists".

"The main objective of the Biafra Liberation Army is to defend our land against the killings and aggression of Terrorists in Nigeria.

"We have witnessed the Terrorists burning down markets, villages and communities in different parts of the Southeast, and the government in Exile had no option but to form the Biafra Liberation Army with equal arms and firepower to defend Biafrans and protect.

"Since the establishment of the Biafra Liberation Army, insecurity has dropped in the 40 states in the Southeast and south-south territories. But the only insecurity remains that of Nigeria state actors", he said.

Recall that BRGIE, on October 20 2023, announced the establishment of BLA with volunteer officers hovering around 100,000, currently stationed across different locations in Biafra land.
