iOS 6 jailbreak release is around the corner. Every iPhone 3Gs users on 4.1 with baseband 06.15 should get the latest Redsn0w and downgrade their baseband so as to upgrade to iOS 6 when the untethered jailbreak is finally released.

Because Airtel sim works on the iPhone doesn't mean it's officially unlocked. The unlock was done via a Cydia software called Ultrasn0w. That's the reason you can't just upgrade to iOS 6 straight because your iPhone depends on jailbreak app (Ultrasn0w) for unlock.

The reason many 3Gs users are on 4.1 is because there's no untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 yet only tethered jailbreak is available. So if you upgrade your iPhone to iOS 6, your phone will be locked again. And because SOFTWARE UNLOCK rely on JAILBREAk, in other words, you can't software unlock your iPhone without jailbreaking it. you will have to jailbreak before you can software unlock it. since iOS 6 jailbreak is tethered, you will have to have your computer around every time your iPhone is running on low battery unless your iPhone comes with OLD BOOTROM.

This is where official unlocking comes in, it enable you stay on newer iOS versions without thinking of losing your unlock. And you will never again depend on jailbreak before your can access network.

I'm not trying to convince you to unlock your iPhone though. I'm just explaining the reason you are able to use Airtel sim on it without official unlock.

Also it's like iOS 6 untethered jailbreak is around the corner, you can just chill on 4.1 then upgrade to iOS 6 when the jailbreak is released. This will save you N5k.

I checked and that's how I knew its locked to AT&T. Permanent/Official unlock will cost you N5,000 as its locked to AT&T. Then upgrading to iOS 6.0.1 is free. Since you are in Abia, I can put you through the process. And It doesn't have any implication.

Since you've got just shsh for iOS 4.1 and 6.0.1 and your iPhone is locked to AT&T. Just unlock and you can then upgrade to iOS 6.0.1
