Nigerian leaders make governing seem like rocket science. It's not that hard. Just don't be greedy with public funds and don't let power get into your head. Let go of it when you sense you're no longer needed.
On another note, it seems we can't even agree on what the problem is. Some say tribalism, but how do you solve that problem? That is not one that can be solved. The good news is that it matters less to the situation of the country.
If that's what you feel the problem is, look for a way to fix it for the good of everybody. It is impossible and even if you succeed, you might not see the result in your lifetime, but you can still try.
For me, we just have to instill fear in the hearts of the leaders and they will come back to their senses.
If you follow American politics, you will realize that the assassination attempts made Trump a little more compassionate. He became more humble. I stand to be corrected anyway.
Still, if I have my way, I will plot an assassination attempt on every major leader at the helm of affairs in the country. Not to kpai them, but so they will know that they're not untouchable. An oppressor will never willingly let go except they are forced.
I think I am a kind person and will not naturally nurse such thought. I want peace, to work, and enjoy my life to the fullest. But the magnitude of recklessness, wickedness, and incompetence our leaders display with our collective wealth will turn the most peaceful humans to vengeful monsters.
Everyday I turn on the news and its one bad situation or the other. Soon, we will all be dragged into politics in this country when the fire becomes unbearable. Even those sitting on the fence. Even you abroad will not have peace.
This is the last I will say about this matter.
Sorry for derailing this thread. Don't forget to bag Aidoge. |

twosquare: Transport, fuel, food, and electricity, have some connections. If there is good transport system to convey agro produce, electricity (people spend fuel on what they shouldn't to run business), it will reduce cost. PMS is a strong strand in our economy that if you pull it, it affects most things...
That is why I mentioned the 250 billion dollars used to defend the naira till 2014. If it were channelled to those things, removing subsidy wouldn't affect Nigeria much. This shows you did not read the earlier screenshots I posted.
And about an intelligent man...good, but what use is an intelligent man told to use a broken system? Even the intelligent man will call for a new tool to work with so that his intelligence can bring out his glory and dexterity. Ever heard a proverb that one rich man among thousands of pauper is a pauper himself?
A man who has the know-how but is surrounded by idiots will be impotent in his performance and frustrated. If he calls for a change of system and 10000 idiats say No, what will he do?
Idiats can easily kill an intelligent man and no one will remember him for his intelligence.
Perhaps in your view, you think Solomon was foolish when he said:
I realized another thing, that in this world fast runners do not always win the races, and the brave do not always win the battles. The wise do not always earn a living, intelligent people do not always get rich, and capable people do not always rise to high positions.
There is something else I saw, a good example of how wisdom is regarded in this world. 14 There was a little town without many people in it. A powerful king attacked it. He surrounded it and prepared to break through the walls. 15 Someone lived there who was poor, but so clever that he could have saved the town. But no one thought about him.[c] 16 I have always said that wisdom is better than strength, but no one thinks of the poor as wise or pays any attention to what they say. 17 It is better to listen to the quiet words of someone wise than to the shouts of a ruler at a council of fools.
Na experience.
Nigeria has the council bolded Wise men. People who could have saved it
But council is more than....if you don't get it, forget about it. Your words are deep and inspiring. |

Ironically, I get happy sometimes that Peter Obi lost the election. If he was the president, I feel he would have been bullied out. Like they did to Jonathan. A single candle in a dark and foggy forest cannot defeat the darkness. The roots of corruption runs deep into every system in the country from the legislature to the Judiciary, police, and inec, among others.
So sad to imagine but the entire system needs to be torched and that is not a job for just any good person. I feel only the military can achieve such a goal and instill such discipline. |

twosquare: Tribalism is small. I always laugh when Nigerians view it through the prism of tribalism as what is bedevilling the nation's progress. If that is it, then you know nothing about geopolitics and the nature of the world.
A Jew will always think about his self-interest first, and you cannot separate people from their identity. If you want them to vote for you since you are not from their group, you have to pander to their ideals and worldview. It's like wanting Arewa to vote for you and you are saying you see nothing about rearing pigs in Kano; let's forget about our identity. Forgetting that Islam is the political currency of Arewa in Nigeria.
Tribalism is not bad. What is tribalism? Tribalism is just loyalty to one's tribe. Full stop. And that is okay. And those who have not constructively used it in history either go extinct or bear dire consequences. I have no problem with an Arewa man preferring his people first before me. That's life. It is when we don't get what we want that we cry foul, but sometimes, stop to think, why? Well, he will prefer his own person because people are not comfortable with change.
What Nigerians are actually calling tribalism is more of nepotism.
And this goes beyond friends and family. Even people of another tribe. An Igbo man may prefer his Yoruba friend more for a position than his own Igbo brother because maybe they have some kind of shady history or something like that, even when he knows that he may not be capable for the job, and vice versa.
So, the spectrum is broad. About Tinubu, @crazymommy, know that it is not only Yorubas who supported him. He also got votes from other geopolitical zones. Yes, some Yorubas may say they will vote for him because he is one of them, and they have the right to do so because he will make them feel among and have a sense of belonging to the Nigeria project. Others in the Yoruba circle may support him also because they have a better chance of getting contracts when they pander to his ethnic identity.
Politics is all about self-interest...and the APC guys, Akpabio, etc., know that. There is not even a guarantee that if the other two candidates enter presidency, things won't turn this way or even worse. We can only say "maybe...maybe". I am not a time lord who can view different alternate realities. Nigeria's greatest mistake was Buhari (whoever reads, let him see the attached) because the damage done by him will take a miracle for any presidential candidate to reverse. Yes, the present one supported him, but politics again is about self-interest, and Buhari did bad.
Nigeria's problem is not tribalism. It is the structure that does not work, which is used to run the country. When the engine is bad, even the car will shut down every two minutes along the road.
Was there not "tribalism" (even though I don't like using it because it is a demeaning colonial construct) in the 60s in the regions, yet no one could come close to Awolowo's achievements?
We should rather understand our differences rather than forget them. A properly defined and structured country along ethno-linguistic federalism in Nigeria should alleviate our problems. No good structure...nothing. Babel is chaos...let everyone know their place...then come together to negotiate what they want in the project.
As "beautiful" as globalists are in Europe and America, opening up their world to us, there are some nucleus they will never allow you to touch if you are not part of them. The Jews will attest to it (I won't talk much).
Nigeria's time bomb they have been shouting all these days has already exploded; now we are seeing the aftereffects. If you like put Obi there, Atiku o, another one wey better, nothing will work because the devils that are feeding from the dysfunctioned system are gatekeepers and they can fight to the death to keep it that way. They are principalities of another order who are men. See how ordinary fuel turn to soap opera.
Upgrade the lock and security systems if you want less break-ins. They know what to do; they just don't want to.
Cc.Superpack589 YEBO bros, Yebo. Tribalism is dismissible in the grand scheme of things. I wish those folks can see that. I didn't want to delve deeper into it because it's a waste of time and it's not a huge part of the problem. But that did not stop me from looking up a few data from the 2023 election even though I don't believe it reflects the will of the people. According to data available, Tinubu was voted by Northerners as well as those in the Niger Delta region and the South West. And even though we've not been in democracy for long, we know that in the past, other tribes have supported candidates not from their regions. Clearly, the majority of Nigerians are smarter and are above tribalism. As you have rightly put it, the structure that has been put in place does not work anymore. But I want to add that there are few elements who have continued to service that structure to the detriment of the masses. These leaders have to go down with it. In my opinion, a simple fix will be to cut the head of the snake and let its body rot away. The challenge is that this particular snake has many heads although they can all be targeted at the same time. Unfortunately, we don't have ambitious military officers out there anymore. They seem to have all been bought or perhaps they have become too agreeable. Castigate me all you want but I think another civil war or military regime may not be too far off anymore, because this same corruption and misuse of office by civilians was what led to the previous one. History always repeats itself when people do not learn from it. |

Imagine someone still trying to downplay tribalism, when what we are suffering today is directly as a result of tribalism. Mentioning greedy leaders, who put the greedy leaders there? Is it not the people? Let 2027 come, they will still come out to vote him saying he is their son. We are not serious in this country. It is a problem, no doubt. But not why we are in this mess. EmmyPers: Bro, preach patriotism from today till tomorrow, the major problem with Nigeria is LEADERSHIP. Getting this right will put right policies in place, right institutions, check tribalism, corruption governance et al. Again without the right policies and enforcement, employers are able to milk out employees in the name of casual staffing with no clear direction for career advancement. Individuals control prices at their will, “all” of our police force are following and protecting private citizens abandoning their core duty of enforcing law and order. There’s a lot that I could have highlighted… but I trust you get what I’m saying.
Most importantly, if you’re an active participant in school politics or even as an onlooker, seeing the antics of most students leaders you’ll understand that everyone is just waiting for their time not to only have a bite of the National cake but to carry everything, in essence the future is still kinda blurry.
If you’re not part of the rich getting richer due to bad governance, I’ll advice you shine your own path for now. Be like @Chichaka, the man of many firsts in his family. Have it in mind to return to contribute your own quota to develop the country at the right time. Well said. Leadership is the problem. Not tribalism, not religion. It is leadership. Without a good leader, things never work out. The decay flows from the top to the bottom. So, Crazymommy, I disagree with you. Tribalism will never go away unfortunately. Saying that is the problem is an insinuation that the country will never work because you can't separate people from their tribes. Of course, people need to be enlightened to think outside the fog of tribal sentiment but you can't fault them because of who they vote for and say that is the problem of the country. Na there their sense reach. People vote for different reasons. The man may have helped some of them in the past, you never can tell. No one cares. The average Nigerian does not care weda the president na nupe or ogoni. We just want good leaders who are accountable to the people. We have them bad that's why things are this way. Is it tribalism that has made fuel expensive or the anti-people policies of the government? Was it tribalism that devalued the currency? No. It still boils down to the leaders, starting from the president himself. I think we need to set a pattern for our leaders to keep them in check. |

jayce232: I quoted u earlier & stated tribalism was the bane of this nation, u quoted me with greedy leader being the cause, I just didn't want to respond so as not to derail the thread until I saw this. If u read what the crazymommy lady posted u will notice a very salient point where she stated the tribalism she experienced in Nigeria is worst than the racism in UK. Go read her post again. Many of u trivialize the negative consequences of tribalism, forgetting no nation can experience progress with it. The negative effects of tribalism is bigger than corruption, becos it makes people to put square pegs in round holes & makes them protect their own, even when sth is wrong.
A country where people will always vote for their own, even when it is glaring such a person is incapable to rule, so long he comes from their region or village, they decide to vote for him, how do u want such a nation to make progress?? People don't vote the best hands, they vote their own, no matter how bad the person is, so long he is from their region, they will vote him. So what do u want the average Nigerian who has an opportunity to Japa to do in such case? To stay back & start suffering for the wrong decisions made by others on the basis of tribalism?? Tribalism might be part of the problem but not the major cause. What of religious and ideological differences? Thing is, multiple things can exist at the same time. Tribalism and religious differences can exist, and the country can still be good for her people. It's possible. Besides, I think you're overestimating tribalism in Nigeria. It is not as bad as you want to make it look. Yes, many shallow-minded people still think with tribal sentiments but that does not mean the majority is like that. We have been co-existing for centuries even before the North and South were joined together. I think the problem is greedy and incompetent leaders who do not fear the people they serve. They just feel like nothing will happen no matter what they do. The people have become so docile. You talk about voting, but how sure are you that the publicized election results reflect the will of the people? Even when people from all tribes come up with one voice to vote, a few elements up will still sabotage the process and select their choice. |

Nigeria can work. We just need to hold leaders accountable. People should have the mind to go after leaders that misuse office. By the time many of them kpai follow body one by one, any one wey enter position go use am well. Nigerian leaders do not fear the people they serve that's why they rule recklessly. Because them feel say nothing go happen. We need to instill fear in the hearts of Nigerian leaders. |

Whenever we talk about the situation of Nigeria, some people just bring up the word "japa" as if it is some kind of antidote to solve the problem. Yeah, we should all just run away to greenery pastures and leave our ancestral lands just because we want to live good lives.
And then you're preaching on how good it is to be in distant lands so others can join you over there. So what happens when that place is no longer conducive? What happens when the people there start turning against you after you've imported all your relatives to fight for the scarce resources? You run again to another pleasurable place and continue pursuing pleasure all your life till you die, having lived a meaningless, selfish life that inspires no one.
Sorry to say this but many of Nigerians are so devoid of purpose in life. No ideas, no passion to make change. You just want pleasure, so all you think about is how to run to the nearest paradise. Most of your ancestors were likewise dull, that's why they built their economies on slave trade. It's so shameful that it took the British to forcefully stop the slave trade that they themselves (the British) started centuries earlier. The English people had to enter the open seas to stop it and then made oil palm trade more popular instead. Your ancestors did not want to stop trading humans even when they could do other more lucrative things.
Like you said - many centuries ago, people were forcefully whisked away. Now, you willingly go there to serve as modern slaves, working 3 - 5 jobs daily just to earn money to live well. Like another person rightly said, some even go there without plans and end up stranded and suffer. For God's sake, are our brains wired to be slaves? Are we cursed not to prosper as a race or not to be able to govern ourselves? I don't get it at all.
I talk about what we can do about the deteriorating situation of things in Nigeria, you all kept mute. You heard about japa, and you trooped out, schooling people about how good life is across the seas. Do you not care about your country that's now 64 years old and does not seem to be working?
I don't care where you decide to go to work and make yourself a good life or where you are, but when we talk about the situation of YOUR COUNTRY, bring up ideas that can inspire people to take action and make change. Not just "japa." Wherever you are, be courageous enough to come back to your ancestral land to drive change.
If not you, then who are you waiting for to make Nigeria better? We should all just stop thinking about just running away like cowards.
Regardless, wherever you are, you can drive change in your country. And for you already nursing the idea, take action while you can. If we all contribute our quota, we can see considerable change soon that will make all of you want to come back. Because if e good, una go still troop in massively. Be a part of the solution. Nor dy wait for others to solve the problem make you come enjoy.
If we dy talk about country, chook mouth for the matter abeg. A revolutionary drive can start from anywhere. |
