No plan to increase electricity tariff, says NERC http://suruvibes.net/no-plan-increase-electricity-tariff-says-nerc/ |
Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola Okechukwu Nnodim, Abuja The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Tuesday denied reports that there were plans to increase power tariffs across the country. Six months ago, NERC increased electricity tariffs for different categories of consumers by over 45 per cent, but it denied doing so this time around because of the prevailing economic situation in the country. It also stated that none of the operators in the industry was pressing for an increase in tariffs, adding that it had not received any application to that effect. This is coming as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation assured operators in the power sector that by September this year, it would have completed the repair of vandalised pipelines supplying gas to the power plants. Reacting to a media report (not The PUNCH) that the power firms had made a request for 100 per cent increase in tariffs, NERC said in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, “The Nigerian electricity supply industry is not contemplating any tariff increase as none of the industry operators is pressing for 100 per cent increase in electricity tariff. This clarification is coming on the heels of a speculative media report that created the impression that NERC is considering applications from electricity distribution companies for 100 per cent increase in electricity tariff. “Contrary to this report, NERC has not received any request for 100 per cent increase in tariff from any electricity industry operator as most of them are at this moment preoccupied with the challenges of improvement in service delivery imposed on them by the existing tariff regime. “The commission as well as the industry is responsible enough to appreciate the state of the economy, level of power generation, how Nigerians are coping and would, therefore, not make any decision that could further aggravate the challenges faced by the power sector and the economy.” On the completion of gas pipelines, the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, in a communique issued on Tuesday after the seventh monthly meeting of the minister with operators in the power sector, stated that the national oil firm assured stakeholders that it would support the industry by making gas readily available once the infrastructure was fixed. It stated, “The NNPC acknowledged the current gas constraints to the power sector and assured consumers of steps to improve gas supply to power plants, which include restoring previous supply levels by completing repairs to vandalised pipelines by September 2016. “The NNPC also discussed new supply additions from alternative sources as well as improving the readiness of power plants to receive gas, which should improve power supply in the country.” The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, according to the communique, revealed some developments towards achieving incremental power for the country during the meeting. Some of these include the recent Power Purchase Agreements that were signed to provide solar power from 12 companies, which should add almost 1,000 megawatts of electricity after implementation in coming years. He also noted that the Azura power plant construction was on schedule and when completed, it would add 450MW of electricity to the national grid. http://suruvibes.net/no-plan-increase-electricity-tariff-says-nerc/ |
Separatist group, Niger Delta Avengers, has declared that it will continue to carry out its activities until President Muhammadu Buhari is ready to genuinely address the problems of the region. The group which has claimed responsibility for several pipeline attacks in the Niger Delta warned that it will continue to impede all avenues to export crude oil from the region. NDA claimed that contrary to reports, it was not approached by anybody from the Federal Government when a ceasefire was declared, adding that the government did not create any platform to address the problems of the region, Vanguard reports. The report quoted a source from the ranks of the militant group as saying, “This phase of our struggle encapsulates our determination to ensure that the petro-dollar from the Niger Delta is not used to develop the 97 per cent (95 per cent ) of those President “In the first instance, we suspended hostilities in good faith to see if the government of the day was sincerely speaking when it announced its dialogue initiative. That was why for strategic reasons we did not make open declaration of our cessation of hostilities. We wanted to watch and to show Nigerians and the world the insincerity of the government’s dialogue plans. “Until we resumed operations, nobody reached out to us and government did not establish any genuine platform to address our grievances. “Until President Buhari takes our demands seriously and set up a genuine framework to address the Niger Delta question, we will continue to obstruct all avenues to export our crude oil to develop his 97 per cent (95 per cent). In fact, whenever we have any contact to establish a genuine negotiation and dialogue, we will not hesitate to let the world know that we are in dialogue with the government and her representatives. “This is another phase of the Niger Delta struggle to reclaim our resources for prosperity. Some mischief-makers can tag it Ijaw struggle, but our set short, medium and long-term plans are for us the people of the Niger Delta to control our resources and develop our land and pay tax to the central government. “We have stated our objectives, which are in three categories. It is President Buhari’s responsibility to show political will to address them, we do not want ‘peace of our time,’ we want ‘peace with honour.’ There are no new demands on the table, what every past government has given the people of Niger Delta is graveyard peace.”

resident Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said the renewed violence in the Niger Delta would not stop his administration from engaging with interest groups from the region in finding solutions to the challenges facing the area. Buhari spoke during the breaking of Ramadan fast with members of the diplomatic corps at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. “No amount of militancy shall distract us from engaging with the region,” the President told his guests. While regretting the renewed militancy, Buharj assured his guests that his administration was doing everything possible to address their concerns. He identified some of the critical areas receiving his government’s attention to include the issue of unemployment, poor infrastructure and ecological problems. Buhari again called on the international community to assist his government repatriate looted funds stashed in their countries. This, he added, would also assist his administration to successfully prosecute the looters. Ousted chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff has dismissed the report of his sack by a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, describing the report as “false and a clear misrepresentation of the ruling of the court.” This was contained in a statement signed by Professor Adewale Oladipo, the National Secretary, who said the court delivered its judgement on certain amendments, which have nothing to do with the leadership of Sheriff. The statement reads in part: “Our attention has been drawn to reports circulating in the media that a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has ousted the National Chairman of the PDP, Sen. Ali-Modu Sheriff. “This is completely false and a clear misrepresentation of the ruling of the court as it never gave any ruling ousting the National Chairman. “For the avoidance of doubt, the court only heard and delivered judgment on a matter concerning certain amendments in the PDP constitution, which has nothing to do with the election of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the National Chairman or even that of his predecessor, Alhaji Adamu Muazu. “Senator Ali Modu Sheriff was duly elected as the National Chairman of the PDP. He still holds office as the National Chairman and has not been removed by any court. “We therefore urge those misleading the media and the unsuspecting public to desist from such. The media is also urged to always crosscheck their facts before going to press,” he stated. http://suruvibes.net/fct-court-not-sack-sheriff-oladipo/ |
Iggy Azalea called off her engagement to Nick Young after he confessed he got his baby mama pregnant When Iggy Azalea announced on her IG page that she had ended her engagement to LA Lakers star, Nick Young earlier this month, she said she couldn’t ‘rebuild’ her trust in him. Now we know why she wrote that. Nick Young’s baby mama Keonna Green, whom he already has a 4 year old son (Nick Young Jr) with, is currently pregnant with his second child. He got Keona pregnant while he and Iggy were still engaged. “Nick waited until Keonna was four months pregnant to tell Iggy the news,”. Nick told Iggy that “he was drunk and had a lapse in judgment. “He said it was a one-night stand and will never happen again,” the source told the Life & Style. “But it’s too late. He is having another son!” ‘This is something she can’t ignore, and it ruined their future together.’ the insider said. Life & Style claim they approached Keonna Green last week and she confirmed that she was pregnant and that the pregnancy was an accident. But she refused to comment further. http://suruvibes.net/iggy-azalea-called-off-engagement-nick-young-confessed-got-baby-mama-pregnant/

The Chairman of the Yoruba Unity Forum, Bishop Bolanle Gbonigi (retd.), says the ongoing court trials of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, are ridiculing the image of the country. Gbonigi also said attempts made by the Senate President to stop his trials were shameful and undeserving of a public figure. The elder statesman said this in an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday. Gbonigi explained that any public office holder’s attempt to stop his trial was “a proof to suspect that such a public office holder had something to cover up.” He said, “I feel that the Senate President’s trials are ridiculing Nigeria. For the Senate President to move from the first court to the appeal court and then to the Supreme Court to ensure that he is not investigated is not fine. I felt shameful. Why should he go to that length? If what they accused him of is not true, why can’t he allow them (Code of Conduct Bureau) to do their job? “It is the duty of anyone who is accused of committing crimes to show all of us that he is innocent rather than blame the anti-graft agencies. If anybody does not want to be investigated, it is a proof to suspect that such a person has something to cover up.” Gbonigi also asked the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to apologise to Nigerians for writing a petition to the United Nations, European Union, United States, and other foreign missions, over an alleged witch-hunt of opposition leaders. Ekweremadu had alleged in the petition that the forgery case was allegedly aimed at silencing him as the leader and the highest -ranking member of the opposition in the country. He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to focus on reviving the country’s economy. He said, “I don’t think that the anti-graft war is selective. I’m trying to choose words carefully. I may think the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is doing its job without any influence from the executive arm, it may be that the executive is influencing it, but I don’t think so. “But the executive has not proved to all that the anti-graft war is not selective; there is not enough proof that the war is not selective. Let them convince Nigerians.Let the executive arm of government come out and state very clearly that it is not selective, it should prove that it is not selective and publish it and let it be seen clearly by everybody. “It’s a pity that Ekweremadu wrote to the foreign missions about a national matter. I personally think that it is very wrong to take our national issues to the international level. Let us try to find solutions to our problems at home. I appeal to him to stop doing that. Moreover, he should apologise not only to President Muhammadu Buhari, but also to the National Assembly and Nigerians for such an action. The National Assembly belongs to all of us.” http://suruvibes.net/sarakis-attempts-stop-trials-shameful-says-gbonigi/
