The operatives of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad, RRS, have arrested a housemaid agent who specialises in assisting people to get house helps with the motive of using them to abscond with money, jewelry and other belongings of their employers. Francis Okputu, 37 years old house help agent whose mode of operation and agreement with domestic job seekers was to help them get jobs, where they would work as house helps, nannies and cooks. He collected half of their salary for the first month as commission fee and he had been doing this since 2003 predominantly on the Lagos Mainland. “I have been helping Lagosians get house helps and everybody in my neighborhood knows what I do and they also make recommendations and link me with their relatives who need my service,” he said. Francis added that, “sometime in May this year, a friend directed one Joy Onoz to me to help her get a housemaid job which I did and all was fine until the next month when she began to call me that her mistress does not like her and she will like me to help do something about it”. Francis getting to know that Joy’s Madam is wealthy, began to find means of looting the unsuspecting employer. He called Joy one day and warned her not to speak English throughout their conversation and told her to steal her madam’s money, jewelries and also help him get her picture and deliver it to him in an undisclosed place. The gold jewelry, he told Joy, would be replaced with copper and that he would take the picture to a prophetess who would help him bewitch and make her not to question any of the girl’s deed after stealing her things. Joy, while talking with policemen about her agent’s move to loot her employer quickly told her Madam of Francis’ plans and they played along with his arrangement. The Mistress gave Joy some hard currencies and Jewelries and her picture and told her to contact Francis that she had successfully gotten some valuables. Francis, unknowingly instructed Joy to meet him at Iyana-Ipaja to handover her loots to him and that he would arrange how to get the fakes across to her by doing imitations of the jewelries to avoid any suspicion. Officers who had been contacted by the employer swung into action and laid siege for Francis at the agreed location where he was arrested after receiving the loots. Recovered from Francis’ hand when joy was trailed to Iyana Ipaja, the point of exchange of the stolen items, were $15 dollar notes, sets of gold jewelries worth N450,000 and a picture. According to the Punch Newspaper, five domestic workers have been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly breaking into their employer’s room and carting away her gold jewellery valued at N105m. The accused, Segun Akintola,49; Tomisin Alade ,28; Felicia Musa,23; Amaka Irozuru,38; and Zakara Yau,38, were arraigned on five counts bordering on conspiracy, Housebreaking, stealing and possession of stolen items. The five domestic workers conspired among themselves and entered into the bedroom of their employer, Mrs Oluyemisi Wada, who had travelled out of the country, and stole her gold jewellery worth N105m. They committed the offences with others still at large in Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos. He said one of the defendants, a housemaid, left the house to an unknown destination for a week before the personal assistant to the complainant got to know about the stolen jewellery. The prosecutor stated, “The PA to the complainant received a phone call from her from the United Kingdom to retrieve bedroom keys from one of the defendants, who was a cook, in order to check the room.” The PA met the complainant’s bedroom door ajar and upon entering, he discovered that her safe containing her gold jewelry valued at N105m had been carted away by an unknown person. “On the same day, he said housemaid called the PA with a foreign phone number and told him that she did not know how she found herself at the Ghana-Togo border.” “The police saw other defendants from the CCTV footage watching the premises to know if the coast was clear for the housemaid, who is the prime suspect, to come out from the house before exiting the main gate.” TAKEAWAYS This was a well-planned crime amongst the five domestic workers. A domestic staff has killed his employer and her mother in Surulere area of Lagos barely two days after resumption of duty. On 20th June 2019 at about 3am, Surulere Police Station received a distress call from No 4 Ogunlana Drive, Surulere, that one Joseph Ogbu, a 22 years old from Oju Local Government Area, Benue State, who was employed as a domestic staff on 18th June, 2019, murdered his employer madam Oreoluwa John, 38 years old and her 89 years old Mother, Adejoke John at their residence. In his confession to the crime, the suspect averred that, his employer asked him to clean the house at about 9pm of 19th June, 2019 but an argument ensued between them, which prompted him to stab her with a knife. The shock of seeing her daughter dead caused the 89 years old mother slum and die. After committing such inhumane act, he moved some valuable properties such as electronics, handsets and household items into the employer's Toyota Camry Salon Car and attempted to escape before he was apprehended by Policemen on patrol at Ogunlana pindown point. The vehicle and items stolen were recovered, the Crime scene sealed off, and corpses of the two victims were deposited at Mainland hospital Yaba for further investigation. The Police are carrying out further investigations to ascertain the real motive of this crime and investigate how and where Ogbu was sourced from.
