France President Macron Told to Suspend Trip To Nigeria

The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, has been told to suspend his planned state visit to Nigeria and prioritise addressing domestic challenges before engaging in diplomatic activities abroad.

Former South-East presidential spokesman, Denge Josef Onoh, made the appeal in a statement on Sunday.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Macron is expected to visit Nigeria on October 28 and 29.Nigeria travel guide

He argued that the French president should reconsider the timing of the trip, insisting that effective leadership requires leaders to address pressing domestic concerns before pursuing international engagements.

According to Onoh, proceeding with the visit while France faces unrest would send the wrong message about Macron’s priorities and his responsibility to the French people.

“True statesmanship requires prioritising the home front when the foundations are shaking,” Onoh said.

“President Macron cannot be seen playing global politics and chasing bilateral photo-ops in Abuja while the streets of Paris and other French cities are burning. You do not go structural shopping in Africa when your own house is on fire.”

Onoh expressed sympathy with the French government and citizens over the situation, noting that the unrest was painful for people who regard France as home or have experienced its hospitality, culture and traditions.

He warned that the crisis could threaten the social fabric that sustains France’s cultural heritage, urging the government to place its enduring national values above temporary political considerations.

“It is time for the French government to focus on enduring French values over temporary political values,” he said.

The former presidential spokesman also questioned the appropriateness of Macron’s planned visit to Nigeria at a time when the country is preparing for the 2027 general elections.Nigeria travel guide

He maintained that Nigeria should concentrate on addressing its domestic challenges and ensuring that the forthcoming elections produce a leader capable of rebuilding the economy and restoring confidence in public institutions.

“Nigeria has its problems, and it is the sole responsibility of Nigerians to focus on and solve their own problems,” Onoh said.

He argued that the French president’s visit could become a distraction at a time when both countries should carefully consider their priorities, adding that France should first address its internal challenges before pursuing further diplomatic engagements.

To support his position, Onoh referred to previous occasions when domestic unrest affected France’s diplomatic activities.

He cited the postponement of a planned state visit by Britain’s King Charles III to France in March 2023 amid widespread protests against pension reforms. The visit was delayed as the French government faced mounting public demonstrations over the proposed changes.

Onoh also referenced the civil unrest of May 1968 under former French President Charles de Gaulle and the suburban riots of 2005 under former President Jacques Chirac, arguing that previous French administrations had faced situations in which domestic instability demanded urgent attention.

He urged the Nigerian presidency to consider the implications of France’s domestic situation for the planned engagement, particularly in relation to potential agreements covering the economy, energy and security.

According to him, Nigeria remains open to international partnerships but needs reliable diplomatic partners capable of managing their domestic affairs while pursuing cooperation with other countries.

“We love diplomacy, and Nigeria remains a premier destination for global partnerships. However, we need a French President who is stable at home to partner with us effectively abroad,” he said.Nigeria travel guide

“For the sake of the French people and the integrity of international diplomacy, President Macron should stay in Paris, face the protesters, address their grievances, and reschedule his Nigerian visit for a time when France is not burning.”

Onoh’s appeal comes ahead of Macron’s expected state visit to Nigeria, which is aimed at strengthening relations between both countries and consolidating agreements reached during President Bola Tinubu’s previous visit to France.

We reported earlier that Macron is expected to arrive in Nigeria on October 28 for a two-day state visit.

The planned trip would be Macron’s first visit to Nigeria since July 2018, when he visited the country during the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

It would also follow Tinubu’s three-day state visit to France in November 2024, during which both leaders discussed areas of mutual interest, including finance, energy transition, solid minerals, trade, investment and communications.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga had said Tinubu’s visit was intended to strengthen political, economic and cultural relations between Nigeria and France while creating additional opportunities for cooperation.

Macron, whose second and final presidential term is due to end in May 2027, has maintained relations with Tinubu since the Nigerian leader assumed office in 2023.

It was not just Buhari, Tinubu and the APC that led to the defeat of Jonathan. It was the internal division within the PDP. The implosion of APC is inevitable and it is due to Tinubu's greed in wanting every politician to join the APC and work only for his own benefit.

Politics › Re: Breaking News: Emeka Chinedu Has Been Declared The Consensus Candidate For Ahiaz by sweerychick(f): 2:17pm On Sep 26
chinjay:
*BREAKING NEWS: EMEKA CHINEDU HAS BEEN DECLARED THE CONSENSUS CANDIDATE FOR AHIAZU MBAISE/EZINIHITTE.*

No congress was held. No delegates were summoned. No meeting was convened. No resolution was passed. No communiqué was issued. Yet, somehow, everyone appears to have agreed on one thing: Emeka Chinedu must remain the subject of their campaign. Indeed, he has become the subject of the formula itself. Arrange the quadratic equation however you please. Add, subtract, multiply or divide. Somehow, the answer keeps returning to the same constant: Emeka Chinedu.

One would imagine that a political candidate whose name is on the ballot would have his supporters occupied with explaining his record, presenting his ideas and making the case for his candidacy. Apparently, that is now an outdated concept of campaigning. The new formula seems rather different: find Emeka Chinedu, discuss Emeka Chinedu, attack Emeka Chinedu, analyse Emeka Chinedu and, if there is any time left, remember that you actually have a candidate of your own. What an extraordinary political arrangement.

Their candidate is somewhere. Their campaign is somewhere. But Emeka Chinedu is everywhere. Judging by the volume of attention devoted to him, he may not be their candidate, but he has certainly become their campaign. One is therefore tempted to ask: how exactly are voters expected to know your candidate when your political conversation is overwhelmingly about somebody else? Perhaps that is beside the point. So long as Emeka Chinedu remains the name they cannot seem to escape, the campaign apparently has a subject.

But perhaps there is a reason the name keeps returning. A person does not ordinarily become the subject of sustained political attention merely by existing. Attention of this magnitude usually has a cause. In Emeka Chinedu’s case, his critics have chosen to make the visibility of his tenure part of their own conversation. His office has acquired a public profile, his activities have attracted attention, and his personal reputation has become part of the political discussion surrounding the constituency. He did not merely occupy the office. He made the office visible. And once something becomes visible, it becomes discussable. Once it becomes discussable, it becomes politically inconvenient to those who would rather discuss something else.

At this point, perhaps we should congratulate those who have inadvertently turned him into their consensus candidate. They have handed him something every politician seeks during an election season: attention. And they appear to be providing it at no charge.

There is an old literary irony in watching people attempt to remove a character from the centre of a story while devoting every available page to writing about him. The harder they insist that he should not matter, the more conspicuously they place him at the centre of the narrative. At some point, the contradiction becomes self-explanatory.

Indeed, there is something almost Socratic about the arrangement. Those determined to make Emeka Chinedu the problem repeatedly reveal, through the arguments they bring against him, just how much space he occupies in their own political imagination. They arrive to discuss him and, somewhere along the way, tell us rather more about themselves.

At this rate, the campaign posters may soon require a redesign. Instead of “VOTE FOR OUR CANDIDATE,” we may soon be treated to: “VOTE FOR OUR CANDIDATE BECAUSE EMEKA CHINEDU MUST NOT WIN.”

Perhaps we should even establish an Emeka Chinedu Opposition Publicity Bureau, complete with departments for monitoring him, discussing him, analysing him, interpreting him and ensuring that nobody forgets his name. Judging by the consistency of the output, the bureau appears to be fully operational.

In all honesty, Emeka Chinedu may soon need to acknowledge his unofficial campaign team in his appreciation message: “Special thanks to all those who opposed us so tirelessly that they forgot to campaign for themselves.” it would be rude not to.

Perhaps, therefore, we should stop pretending there is no consensus. There is one. Emeka Chinedu has become the unofficial consensus candidate of those who cannot seem to stop campaigning against him.

Congratulations, gentlemen. You have achieved political unity. You have established a common conversation. You have even managed to keep one man’s name in circulation without his asking you to. The only thing left is to remember that you came with candidates of your own.
