South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has expressed disappointment at what he described as a lack of support from fellow African nations following Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match on Thursday night, Saturday PUNCH reports.

The result leaves South Africa with work to do in Group A as they pursue a place in the knockout rounds.

Speaking after the match, Williams admitted he was surprised by the volume of African football fans who appeared to back Mexico rather than an African representative on the global stage, and called for greater unity among Africans during major tournaments.

“Africans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup tournament, but I can’t figure out why our own case is different,” Williams said. “Many Africans supported Mexico, not us, the South Africans. We almost shed tears, but it’s truly sad.”

"As Africans, let’s stand for each other, let’s stand together.”

While some supporters sympathised with the goalkeeper’s sentiments and agreed that African nations should rally behind one another at international competitions, others offered a contrasting view.

A number of social media users from countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zimbabwe argued that recurring reports of xenophobic attacks on African migrants in South Africa have weakened the sense of continental solidarity, with several referencing past incidents involving foreign nationals living in the country as having shaped how other Africans view South Africa.

Some openly stated that they had supported Mexico in the match, citing those tensions as a factor in their decision.

Trust all of you are marching forward hale and hearty.
I wan make una helep me chuku mouth for this my wife matta.
She had a stillbirth after complete 9 months of pregrancy in 2022 Feb precisely.
Fews months after the sad and ugly experience she took in but had miscarriage in July of that same year.
She cried her eyes out all through that period till the year ended.
2023 came,we continued trying untill around Nov -Dec she took in again but miscarried after 6-7 weeks
[b]I got angry and threatened her severally in different form including sending her packing [/b]but I will always think twice and move on with her.
Fast forward to 2024,we kept leaving our normal life and hoping in God for a miracle once again
Around July she told me she didn't see her menstrual flow,she was suppose to see it by July 2nd.I was excited
So she did a strip test it appeared + but the lines were very faint so we proceeded to the hospital to see doctor.
so the doctor viewed her record stating all that has transpired in the past starting from stillbirth to 1st miscarriage then 2nd miscarriage so he advised she shouldn't be stressing herself too much,rest and sleep mostly while he recommended she take duphaston,folic acid and fefforon pls pardon me if i got the spelling of that drug wrong but it was a blood capsule.She took it for 2 weeks.
She finished taking it last friday and she has gone 8 weeks so far but she kept complaining to me about waist pain,fatigue,her legs always hot,temperature high sometimes and goes low,her urine having traces of blood sometimes but will stop at certain time
The main matter now is that she is uncomfortable with what she saw this evening and she has been crying all through.
something came out of her private like pap the thing looks like catarrh it draws so she is afraid and confuse what could that be?
I encouraged her not to rush to do scan yet even the doctor said same let's watch how things unfold then this encounter this evening happen.Her cry is disturbing me even as I narrate her ordeal here now

I am afraid too cos pregnancy makes couples that have had sad experiences in the past very tensed.
One dont know what comes next after a stage in pregnancy until full term

Honestly a lot was said but I still believe it all boils down to having a good immune system. I don't think people with weak immunity are not going to be prone to certain illnesses just because they are vaccination. I stand to be corrected though
But given how they made the vaccine so important, one would think it's a do or die affair. I'm just glad the horror is over
