Career / High Paying Skills You Need To Learn In Nigeria. by Talk2Bella(f): 2:41pm On Feb 27, 2021
Is learning a skill really important?

So, 4 years ago I wrote why learning a skill outside your university degree is really important, you can read about it here https://talk2bella.com/2017/07/04/why-every-nigerian-lady-must-learn-a-skill/. well, dem say who no go no know hahahahaha, Naija hard sha, e hard die, e hard pieces kudos to anyone out there holding it down because if you fit make am for naija trust me you can make it anywhere.

During my NYSC I enrolled in a fashion school to keep busy and also plan for the future incase the labor market wasn’t kind to me at least make I get backup plan ba? Anyway, I sha learn the work and I was lucky before I finished NYSC job came. The easiest job to get for a fresh graduate is always sales job and the purpose of this is to toughen you up for the real world.

Truth is sales is an interesting career building type of job, it will mould you for the real world and if you succeed in sales trust me you can succeed in any management position, its dynamism is unique. Anyway, I did sales for years and trust me when I sale ko easy mehn because Jehovah built me to be chubby, but I was just looking like pankere everyday of my life, I became a bonny structure and got massively addicted to coffee, I made money o I wont lie, but did I have the time to spend this money? No, I didn’t. sales shaped me, moulded me, gave me experience I wouldn’t have gotten if I had gotten a different job, I networked and engaged in training others as well, it built my confidence but at the end of the day I noticed I was becoming stagnant, I was doing the same thing over and over and over again, I was gaining experience in just one field without diversifying and then I decided to change career.

I have done things sha in the name of hustle, I have drastically changed from 4 years ago to today, it’s not about coming to the internet to make mouth, demean others and be a motivational speaker but I am here to still remind you that things are hard, and it might not get better soon, things are o but people still de cash out.

Let’s focus on the topic of this content mbok, I learnt fashion designing but I haven’t used it for a day, the plan is to make money and one day diversify where I open a fashion hub and outsource it to professionals. I have the knowledge already because I learnt this a while ago, but I do not have a passion for it, so it is really important if you’re going to learn a skill let it be something you really have a passion for cos this country will humble you.

Understanding Data: I honestly cannot deny that understanding and interpreting data is one of the best skills to acquire, I am currently on this path as my new career is focused on growth marketing which encompasses both digital and T-shaped marketing and this has to do a lot with collating, analyzing and Interpreting data. Truth is you do not need to be an expert in this field, having basic knowledge will get you the audience you desire and from there you can grow.

Photography/Videography/Cinematography and Graphics Design: trust me when I say professional photo and videographers are cashing out constantly, like waaaaaaaaaht. Not our olden days photographers o that we see at weddings who come to ask to snap you for like 500 Naira or so. For years now the Nigeria music and movie industry has boomed and is booming, and you can testify to the quality of contents that is coming out of the industry. TY Bello, Clarence Peters and their colleagues make a ton of money providing their services, it is important you know that they have been in the game for a long time and now they’re reaping their earned rewards. Being a Graphics designer in this era and being good at it is a testimony because if you play your cards well your works will speak for you both locally and internationally. Advertising agencies, small businesses, big businesses, freelancing gigs, just name it is going to be at your beck and call, but no be beans o because you need to put in the hours to be an expert in this field.

Digital Marketing: see ehn, concerning this level I no need to even de write epistle onto this matter, the koko be say anyone can be a digital marketer, anyone can do 1+1 and run ads on Facebook, Google, Twitter etc and cash out. There are tons of materials online to learn freely from it is one skill you don’t have to spend much money acquiring maybe just internet money and have a smart phone. Digital Marketing is complex and delves all the way to growth, performance, content, creative, email marketing etc so pick a niche and decide which one you’d like to excel in.

Fashion Designing/Makeup and Hair: I love has dynamic this skill has become over the years, growing up and visiting a tailor was gender specific, my brother visited a male tailor while my mum and myself visited a female one. Most of then sew just for their gender and weren’t even willing to experiment or go out of their comfort zone, but you see this life ehn, it is all about constant growth and we can see a lot of that growth in the fashion industry. Some male fashion designers even sew better than women in the industry, it is no more gender based and we see a lot of these people cashing out, dear naija yoot what are ye waiting for?

Makeup and Hair is another money-making skill I’d advise anyone to go into, wig making is a booming Industry and you know the funny thing? There’s this funny stereotype that a man or woman who ventures into the opposite gender’s trade will excel more than that gender e.g a man making hair for women, makeup etc will do better than a woman in that field, is this true?

Side Hustle: lol abeg make una leave me because to me side hustle is a skill, not everyone can combine 8-5 and still manage a side business. There are a lot of side hustles one can go into and the WWW has helped a lot of people start up and even prosper, a colleague told me a story of how his friend earned 30M in one day from Dropshipping my mouth dropped and spit was just drooling from the side hahahahah. Immediately I built an e-commerce store and started mini-importation shaperly. I made money o I wont lie, I am an experienced digital marketer, so it was easy for me to run ads to promote my business. I spoke to a colleague and good friend Abimbola who was into dropshipping and she put me through, gave me her contacts in China and voila I was making money until covid and dollar happened, I waited a while and decided to put a hold on it and go for my MBA in Marketing.

This writeup is about skills that are easily accessible and learnable, and I haven’t even covered half of it. There are tons of skills to learn that’s not about coding, app development, UX/UI because even me sef no get brain for this kain skills and I know not everyone can learn it, 1+1 de give me headache I no fit learn plenty coding abegi.

No kind hustle wey I never put my hand for, I don even do Tigernut Milk de supply people sef and we all know how having another source of income is very important in this economy. Salary no de reach person again, cost of foodstuffs don increase massively, Nepa bills don turn extortion and these days person gats de budget for self-protection because of herdsmen and bandits.

Learn these skills to supplement your income, but if your salary de shake your bank account every week with positive vibrations, guy you no need am just de enjoy you salary de go.

well it hasn't been easy, I should have been done with school but will be done this April by God's grace but I'd like to share my experience, dad died many years ago, things went sour. I finally gained admission, family members render the little help they can, I started selling clothes, oil and doing part-time job from 300 Level, last year I was able to save about 100k, I have saved money in advance for my NYSC so I can save the monthly allawee for a year, ill also look for a business i can do while i am there, by the time I'll be done with service I should have saved nothing less than 300k,. I intend going into business with that money, the little farming I can do with it, I am a furniture making apprentice already, I might take a side job to fall back on, save up and invest in agriculture and real estate. it hasn't been easy and isn't always going to be easy but this girl typing this must make it, I no fit dey jobless, do runs or steal and I know with God, hard work, perseverance, a good saving mindset things will be well. I can't even deal with poverty, had enough of it. Don't wait for the government, work on yourself, get a skill, a side job, save up, invest and believe God for the best!

You’re an inspiration you will make it far and wide Amen

I finished service since April 2017. It hasn't been funny one bit.
I battle depression almost everytime, I've contemplated suicide. Sometimes, I wish I don't wake up from sleep. It has been crazy.

It's almost 2years and I've not gotten a job.

I do dropshipping, buying and selling but business hasn't been moving fine. I can count the number of what I've sold since I started.

I even got scammed of my small money this week.

My mum has been really helping but I'm becoming a burden and it's obvious.
Some people around me help sometimes too but not without a price.

I pray God helps me.

If you wanna work in the corporate world Linkedln is your best bet

With all sense of humility do I say that I planned my graduation. I told myself never to graduate and go home and start looking for jobs.

I started using my computer skills (In those days, we went to computer school to learn MS Office Suite, CorelDraw etc) and I did private home computer tutor from 200L. I also did tutorials for "Pre Degree" students and raised money to buy a car for taxi in my final year.

Everyday, I used to get N2500 from my drivers (most of them de f-up) and with time, they don't give me complete returns and I occasionally drive in the evenings and still get N2000- 11000(yes, some days are good) from 5pm -11pm.

This kept me going through my NYSC days (I bought a cleaner car during my NYSC) and it was my first job from Final year to two years after graduation. Whenever we went for CDS or to my PPA, ladies liked me to drop them off with my clean car with A/C but I told them my story and most was endeared to me
I later became an entrepreneur till date.

I am do any legit stuff to make side incomes too.

Let me give undergraduates a little tip of how to prepare for life from University. It is no more news that school may not teach you how to make money. Try from year 1 to:
1. Dress modestly, don't go for fashion and trendy gadgets but have the necessities you need
2. Keep friends who are working to excel in school and those who have businesses ideas (I am not talking of yahoo or betting)
3. If your parents gives you good pocket money or you can lie that you buy "thermometer" all the time just to have money, save more but don't suffer your life.
4. GET AS MANY SCHOLARSHIPS as you can get (I didn't enjoy this but my close friend did but wasted the money). Agbami pays Engineering and Science undergraduates N350k while Medical Students get N450k yearly. Shell pays N100k , Shevron etc. It is not a must that you will wet it but try. Again, these companies select people from oil producing areas then National merit. With good guidance from a scholarship agent like (google GMASS Port Harcourt), you stand a good chance.

My friend raked a minimum of N1.5m (Agbami paid him N350k and shell paid him N100k multiplied by four yrs - do the maths)

wink

We must all understand that not everyone is designed to be an enterprenuer. The little money I had during my NYSC and with the support from my family, I invest on farming such as Yam, Casava, maize, guinea corn and tomatoes, I employed farmer, I visit the farm once in a month, right now i don't even need white collar job again.

My advice to my brothers and sisters, don't wait for government to do everything for you, start with anything in your street, when I first started I pass through alot of problem from neighbors, calling me names, a graduate became farmers, but today I don't wait for monthly salary, there are some works that sound so dirty but they're profitable.

Very nice farming is something I will venture into definitely

Apart from your certificate, find something doing with your hands, it could be business or some other things.

I finished service since 2017 am already into web stuff like a blogger, although and I have learnt how to make sites appear on search engines and also draw traffic.
I have not bothered sending one CV ever since I just don't want the headech or don't know how to lol. Mind you I have job directory page grin but no job funny.
i know nothing comes easy but prefer a shop where I could sell things rather than hustling for 100k job.

Although blogging has it ups and down but there are times it pays super and there are times it does little be it as it may its sustainable like there are times or months making 600k there are months makes 200 to 100k, it all depends.

Please note : blogging is not easy, an average blog takes 4 to 5 months to bring anything tangible. And you must have a clear path as in good content that should not be plagiarism like you going over pages to copy and paste... I mean real information resource page.

I saw an advert which says “your dream begins when work ends” I see this advert every day to work, I think about it from the moment I see it till I get to the office and it makes me wonder why do I have to wait till work ends before I can achieve my dreams, aside working for a corporate organization what other side hustle do I have or can I engage in? When you start working for a new organization you’re told you can’t have any side business that will make you lose focus from the job.

While not everyone can be an Entrepreneur, with a steady income everyone can save for rainy days. Some of us were lucky we got jobs before or after we were done with our service year others not so, how have you coped without a job? Learnt a skill? Free lanced? Professional certifications? Work for free? Or just sit at home.

Those of us who were fortunate enough to have gotten jobs, are you working the dream job? How many jobs have you had after NYSC? How much have you saved so far? Do you have job stability where you’re currently working? Is your job frustrating you already? Are you planning on resigning already?.

Tomorrow is going to be one of the most important days of our lives, we will decide who will make this country better again, are you for the “NEXT LEVEL” or you’d like to get Nigeria Working Again?

We already know this na so she should come with something else.

It is interesting the in Yoruba there are no words for apple, pineapple and even onions (alubosa from etymology shows that it was adopted and changed for easy pronunciation) yet there are two distinct words for being gay.

You have words like adodi and adofuro meaning being homosexual has always had some place in yoruba history but what is not clear is if it was outlawed but then again, there has never being historical evidences to show anyone was punished for it.

But then again, it is never seen that people practiced it in the open either by marriage or it was socially accepted but it existed.

As for the cross-dressing, popular musician Obesere has been wearing female clothing on stage for tears so Bobrisky's antics does not even surprise me. I guess what changed is the attitude and seeming feminity of Bobrisky that draws attraction to him

learnt something new today, thanks for sharing
