A fresh question has emerged over the voter register in Edo State, following claims that Governor Monday Okpebholo’s polling unit had 397 registered voters in 2024 but now has 4,783 in 2026. That is an increase of 4,386 voters — approximately 1,105% in just two years. This significant change has raised questions that deserve clear answers from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Governor Okpebholo has reportedly spoken about delivering between 2.5 million and 3.5 million votes in Edo State. However, critics have questioned this target, pointing to historical voter turnout figures and asking how such a number would be achieved. Now, attention has turned to the reported figures from his own polling unit. How did the number of registered voters rise so dramatically? Was there a major registration exercise, a change in the polling unit's boundaries, or another explanation? These are important questions, and INEC needs to provide the public with a transparent explanation and access to the relevant voter register. There have also been concerns about the publication of the voter register, making transparency even more important. However, the reported figures alone do not establish wrongdoing or prove that the register was manipulated. INEC, Nigerians deserve answers. The electoral process depends on public trust, and the best way to address these concerns is through verifiable records, clear explanations and transparency.
