Press Conference on WIO Scam Allegation
Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for being here today to witness this all important press conference. My name is Charles Dukwe and I am the Chairman of Project New Nation and the creator of the Women in Oil initiative. As a little boy growing up in Nigeria, I always wondered why life here was so difficult for the average person and there never seems to be anything the common man can truly rejoice or even be happy about. The answers to this puzzle came when I finished university and left for the United States of America. I realized that the simple reason life in Nigeria was difficult was because of lack of innovative solutions from the private sector and our over dependence on government to solve all our numerous problems. More than a decade later, a political leader in the person of President Goodluck Jonathan emerged and said exactly the same things calling on private sector and Nigerians in Diaspora to compliment government policies with innovative solutions as that alone he said was the way forward for the country. I believed the President as a candidate campaigning on this platform and encouraged many young people to vote for him. I did not stop there, after the President was elected, I brought in so many innovative private sector ideas that can bridge the development divide between our dear country and the United States of America and began to take these ideas to the most important segment of the society, the masses at the grass root. One of those innovative private sector led ideas is "Women in Oil" or "WIO". As you are most probably aware, the issue of gender inequality is one of the cardinal points of the millennium development goals and a matter that requires a most pragmatic and tactical measure if any result will be achieved in our lifetime. That pragmatic and tactical measure is the nationally renowned private sector led initiative known as Women in Oil which draws its strength from President Goodluck Jonathan's 35% affirmative policy and the administration's mantra of private sector leadership and response. Quite simply, WIO is a registered corporation in Nigeria with the corporate affairs commission and aims to leverage some of the 30Billion naira per day that is generated from the Nigerian oil and gas industry to better the life of the average, forsaken, unknown and neglected Nigerian woman through empathy driven partnerships that we are establishing with high level technical partners in Canada with the view to operate in 10 critical sectors of the oil and gas industry. This is the true representation of the President's desire in enacting the 35% affirmative and calling for private sector response because much more than political appointments and award of contracts, this initiative will bring the benefits of the policy to the majority and the true stakeholders in what the President terms as our "Common wealth". This is the realistic and tangible meaning of the transformation agenda. We have taken ample difficult and resource consuming approach to enlighten the most simple of Nigerian women from market traders to teachers, widows, housewives, police and army wives associations, civil servants, unemployed and women in the most interior villages on the policy the President has enacted and how we are now leveraging on it to bring a ray of sunlight to their lives. Over 40,000 women across the country have adhered to this call and registered to support this unprecedented initiative and many more are still coming in. This platform has seen women in the forgotten corners of northern Nigeria, to those in the remote villages of the Niger Delta, the streets of kaduna, the markets of lagos, onitsha and aba, and the growing cities of Akure, Abeokuta and Ado Ekiti run under this umbrella with all manner of praises and adulations going to the President for enacting the policy that gave the initiative its foundation. However, just like every good thing that comes to Nigeria, instead of the enabling environment promised, all we have received in this pursuit is name calling, attacks, account freezing, arrests, intimidations, extortions and much more. We have sat back and kept moving forward without much complain until the detractors took the attacks to a new high by now using the special adviser on media and publicity to the same President whose policy we are responding to and brand us as a scam on national TV. Maybe I would have sat back yet again but when I remember the old hausa muslim woman who made me promise to see this through, the iyaloja’s of Lagos who has introduced the poor and the widows from their markets, when I think of 84 year old mummy Alagwa from Bayelsa who took boat rides by herself to go all over Bayelsa regsitering poor and neglected women, when I remember the light and joy that emanates from the faces of countless women in all the 36 states of the federation who attended our seminars, when I think of the pain and suffering the average Nigerian woman has faced under too many successive governments, I would lose any moral foundation to live should I watch as their hope, faith and trust in this President and this mission evaporate into thin air and go away as yet another political and business game.
Mr Ruben Abati, I was appalled as I watched you discuss an initiative you made not even a single research about on national media and in the name of the President of the country. Should you have made the least of enquiries, you would have known that we have never presented this initiative as speaking for the President but always as a private sector response to his policy. Should you have exercised a few minutes due diligence, you would have known that we have brought more public awareness to the 35% affirmative policy than all government efforts combined. Should you Mr special adviser on media and publicity had earned your wages by working for the man who appointed you, you would have known that we have brought so much Goodwill to the President's name within the grass root and among average Nigerians to the point we almost lost our foot in Lagos where the ruling party misunderstood us to be campaigning for the President. You have set President Goodluck Jonathan on possible political suicide by disclaiming the most basic tenets of his administration- Private sector response and 35% affirmative thereby branding the President a hypocrite to the masses at the grass root who are watching this whole episode with keen interest. You have suggested to a nation of over 150million people that the same President who went to school barefooted has completely disconnected from the grass root. Only in a communist country do you require express permission to act on government policy and this nation is not one. Do not Mr Abati set our progressive democracy on a backward motion with your lack of grip on policy and private sector response. You referred to our desire to partake of our common wealth as opportunists. Are policies not supposed to create opportunities? or are you suggesting that the 35% affirmative policy opportunity is only for the Maduekes, and not the ekaetes of our country?
You have clearly put my life and that of our over 5,000 employees in harm's way but I do not take any personal hurt from your actions and inactions neither does your clear lack of competence amaze me but I will request just as you did publicly, that for the sake of the over 40,000 women who have put their faith in this initiative that you not only retract your careless and ridiculous comments, but that you also apologize without any delay on the same medium. Should we experience any law enforcement intimidation as result of this clear exercise of our freedom of speech in a democratic country, be informed that you alone will be held liable.
For the women we are working hard to see your dreams actualized, please know that this issue will not be an impediment to anything and we will not hide under the shadow of this unfortunate occurrence as an excuse not to meet the expectations. For our over 5,000 staff across the entire 36 states of the federation, keep on doing what you know best, helping people until we achieve the vision to make Nigeria a new nation.
