This is completely wrong. All F1 Visa applicant will be placed on AP- Since the new social media check rule.. I was on a group chat with over 300 F1 applicants PHD, Bachelors, Masters, all on AP.

The approval timeline is what is different. They have backlogs, but so far Lagos embassy has been more proactive, with people getting approved in 24 to 48 hours after being placed on AP. Abuja is the opposite. I've been on AP since June and I had my interview in Abuja.

It will be illogical to say all F1 visa applicants will end with AP. If this reasoning is put in operation then all F1 visa applicant must arrive late to school, their f1 visa processing will take longer and there will be lot of backlogs in which there will be a gap-year which the
U.S embassies will not take in F1 visa applications in order to clear the awaiting APs..

Ipso facto, I don't want to believe that 40% of Nigerians are on Nairaland , therefore we should not be judging an individual applicant experience as a specimen for all applicants in Nigerian .

The majority of AP I have personally seen are for Phds and their AP is not because of Social Media verification. Few of the BSC and Msc I have seen were those who listed social medias but did not open their privacy settings to PUBLIC. Those who indicated social medias and open their privacy settings in the beginning of their applications does not necessarily have to be place on AP except for other background checks.

In summary: AP is not compulsory for all F1 visa applicants. I have seen few applicants who did not list social medias. Social media verification is done in few minutes by Computer (automatic or Artificial Intelligence method) and you will only be placed on compulsory AP if the computer red-alert you.

PS: This is my personal research so far from related applicant experiences, reliable sources information and my common sense. IT IS NOT OFFICIAL. 👍

Hello Ayo and Everyone, I am stuck at this exact same point now, and there seems to be no information online or anywhere that can help. Please who knows how to navigate this. After making payment for myself (F1), how do I proceed to create appointment for my spouse (F2). Do I have to select available date first (even if it’s far) in order to proceed with creating appointments for my spouse?
Also, after selecting a date, will I be able to reschedule to a closer appointment date?

abioyebabatunde:
Hello everyone,

I’ve completed my appointment payment via bank transfer — the process was quite fast, and I’ve already seen a scheduled date. However, the available date is in February 2026, which is far from my intended resumption period. For now, I’ve left the appointment at pending, but this has prevented me from creating appointments for my family.

I’d like to know:
Do I need to first select any available date (even if it’s far) in order to proceed with creating appointments for my family?
Also, after selecting a date, will I be able to reschedule later to hunt for a closer appointment date?

Your advice and experience would really help, as I’m trying to wrap up this application process — it’s been quite tedious.
Thanks in advance, and I look forward to your contributions.

You got it wrong Sharon. smiley

18k deficit for a PhD that takes a minimum of 4 years. Altogether, you will have to pay 18,000 x 4 = $72,000. That's a whole lot money for a PhD that is supposed to be fully funded. I do hope you have plans for the remaining years, so you don't end up stranded!

Okay! Thank you so much! So it is not advisable to present my account and his? mine has my deficit and his own has the rest. I want to present personal and family funds.

Efetobore1980:
Hello.
US institutions believes in outright calculation of your financial statement once they are able to verify your academic credentials (they trust you). But if you arrive the school and unable to prove what you put in your admission application you might be expelled.

Likewise, US embassy believes in outright confirmation of your claimed money , they don't care if the money was deposited yesterday or few hours ago. All they do is to verify the authenticity of the owner and the funds. They will however get you if the claimed money is a staged-play.

In your state (situation), you are the principal applicant so have the whole money deposited into your account . Academically, he is your dependent as an F2 (despite being the head of the family) so use one account statement (yours). You can write the school or tell the consular verbally that you combined your resources. Ciao.

You are correct. Thank you

welf99:
That's not correct. All he needs to show is one year of living expenses. In this case, Tuition is covered via funding from the school. He is not paying any money but upkeep for his family. Make sure you stack the living expenses in your bank account and use it to request an I-20 for you and your family. Consular or your school does not care if the amount was paid into your account a few seconds ago.

Hello everyone, quick question.

I got admission to study for my phd. It is funded tuition and part of cost of living is covered. I still have a deficit for my cost of living and other fees (10k). I also want to apply for the visa with my husband (F2). I have to add 8k cost of living for my husband. That brings the total deficit to 18k. I have some personal funds and he has some but the money is not in our accounts. It will be sent in. My question is does it make sense for the money to enter my account and his own in huge chunks. For me 13 million. and for him 17million. Also, how long does the money need to stay in my account before I request for my i20. This is the statement I want to show my school.
