It all depends on what you want to do and what demographic you're trying to target.

Facebook: - has a higher concentration of older and working class people. Male & Female users not too different. It also the best platforms to use to drive traffic to websites and gain product exposure. The interaction level is also the best. Certainly FB is also the social network with the largest community with more than 1billion users.

Twitter: - user base is generally younger compared to FB. Twitter is also excellent for driving traffic to websites. Interaction is great and you have the luxury of real time connections to your clients. Twitter has about 500 million users of which 200 million are said to be regularly active.
For traffic generation and product exposure Twitter is could be almost on the same level as Facebook.

Pinterest: - 70% of users on this platform are female. Although interaction on pinterest is not as good as on twitter and facebook, it also an excellent source for traffic. Brand exposure and niche targeting is great on Pinterest. Total users- 70million.

Instagram: - There are 150 million users and Instagram, but unfortunately traffic to websites from Instagram is not impressive at all. Interaction is also not that great compared to Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook. Having said that, it is safe to say that it will still give you a good level of exposure. Users on this platform are mainly teenagers or people on their very early twenties.

At the end of the day, which social network works best for you depends on what you're comfortable with and what you're trying to achieve.
