I'd like 2 clear some misconceptns:ISLAM, as preached by the best of mankind advocates seeking of education in all its ramification. There is definately no distinction betw Western educatn & mundane education. In fact, a tradition of the faith advocates seeking knowledge as far as China(then in Arabia, China was the known farthest land). This is why the forebears of the faith were at the fore-front of knowledge & Civilzation in their epoch of time.    Also, the Northern muslims shouldn't be construed as "perfect rep" of the Muslim community; as in all parts of the country, we've the uneducated,the area boys (kalari),the trouble makers etc. I undertook my youth service in the North and I can tell you I was grossly dissapointed with how they went about their faith (especially the youths). However, there are some indidviduals/groups amongst them whom you can regard as properly representing the muslim idealogies.
   Having said these, I'm actually dissapointed at most of the comments I came across this thread, most of which are openly spiteful of Islam and went in no small measure to denigrate the Islamic faith (the likes of Davidlan:his comments in the religion section leaves you without doubt that he is suffering from Islamophobia,& you only wonder what extreme hatred can lead to). Apparently as intellectuals, if one doesn't understand a concept/doctrine or one is intimidated by its success, the best thing to do is to attempt an independent assessment of the ills it is being accused of, rather than indulging in religious bigotry cum hatred. I'll be surprised if anyone with origins from the South, especially the S/W doesn't have both muslims & xtians as relatives. We should understand that we are not the same (as some are wont to believe) and then go further to understand our differences inorder to live 2gether in harmony rather than embarking on a crusade of defamatory actions/words that could have been as a result of LIMITED personal experiences. In my extended family, my immediate family happens to be on of the very few which practises the Islamic faith. Despite that, we are able to get along with our xtian cousins,uncles aunts, etc.Infact, my parents have sponsored quite a few of them in their educational pursuits till the tertiary level (I can boldly aver that my parents sponsored at least 15 of such xtian cousins:about 3 are chartered accountants).
   In attempting an epitome, I'll realy plead to us as youths to avoid all these divisive tendencies, focus on issues that can bring us 2gether and in turn lead to further developments of our great nation, and ultimately rise up as ADVOCATES of positive changes where everyone irrespective of his religious proclivities is able to live in peace & harmony with his neighbours. Don't mind the pessimists, Nigeria is bound to come out of all this crises a better and stronger nation.
  To the nation's continued existence & the sustenance of my faith, I resolutely stand for.

Obviously, Davidlylan is apparently islamophobic. No objectivity in his views/comments. Seems he's always ready not only to discredit muslims/Islam but also to insult us.His conducts, utterances and responses in existing threads speak volume of his intolerance and perfidy. Definately, this country is not in need of such treacherous tendencies.My advice:We should all identify all our differences(faith/political etc) and strive towards mutual respect. This nation can do without religious bigotry.[I'm very certain he'll reply with a tirade of insults, Just wait, ]

His/Her constant uncomplimentary remarks & incessant attacks on the islamic ummah are outrageously offensive, or how does one correlate his frequent referall to muslims/Islam on negative issues,even d mundane ones.

I'm surprised that people at this develpomental stage of our dear nation could exhibit such religious bigotry,chauvinism & permit me,religious nepotism.

I believe we should all conciously channel our energy towards peaceful co-existence of all & sundry,rather than indulging in issues that further set us at each others' throats.

Having undertaken an overall perusal of this discussion, it is ovbious & explicitly clear that our dear Funmi has a reservation for muslims. However, I don't subscribe to the use of this forum as an avenue for a display of religious bigotry, chauvinism & un-complimentary remarks.

My submissions are as follows:

1) Islam permits polygamy. This permission comes along with its reponsibilties.One of which is that those engaged in it must be economically capable of such adventure.

2) The institution of polygamy serves to remedy some societal circumstances:

a) Issues of the incompatibility of a couple after marriage.In order to salvage the image of both parties, a man is permitted to take a second wife if d first is not able to give him a child. With respect to the rights of the woman, she is entitled to seeking a divorce from the man (if she so wishes), if he is d source of d childless-ness/in-compatibility.
b) Issues of non-proportional ratio of men:women. It is clear from all around us, there are virtually more men than women in the society. If u're a student, just take a brief & cursory look at the gender ratio in ur class & u will understand what i mean.
If the institution of polygamy is non-existent,what happens to the other women, after the one man, one wife pair has been exhausted.Are they to seek husbands from Mars?
c) Issues of having extramarital affairs.

Polygamy, in Islam is a remedy to solve some societal issues & not just a welcomed culture.

With respect to the issue of muslim men having higher a % of polygamy concentratn, I beg to contest that fact. In my case, my nuclear family is the only one not involved in polygamy in an extended family made up mainly of xtians.


As a summary, we should endeavour to all try as much as possible to make inquiries before delving into issues, to find more refined ways in engaging ourselves without hurting each others' feelings and also to prevent pre-conceived ideas from modelling our thoughts & perceptions. Indeed, we have so much work to do moving our beloved country to greater heights than indulging in such.
