Technology Market / MTN Introduces 0903 Number Range by Techdisqus: 9:09pm On Dec 09, 2013
MTN Nigeria is at it again. This time, MTN Nigeria has just introduced its new number range with the "0903" prefix to consumers. The new range becomes the 9th one the telecommunication company would be introducing to the market having exhausted the 0803, 0806, 0703, 0706, 0810, 0813, 0814 and 0816 ranges.

Forgive my being naive, how do they exhaust these number ranges speedily considering that they also recycle inactive lines and also that number ranges aren’t free and have to be approved by the NCC?

Feel free to leave comments explaining how they exhaust these numbers.

Technology Market / How Social Media Is Making Traditional Media Irrelevant by Techdisqus: 10:21pm On Dec 05, 2013
Ever since the turn of the millennium, social media started picking up pace. With various social networks for various situations, more and more adaptation by famous institutes and governing bodies, and of course the rise of smartphones and tablets in consumer markets, social media became huge. Seeing cat videos, pictures of food and cheesy inspirational quotes does get boring, like really boring. But the strength of social media is seen the most in moments of misfortune. I pretty much never read a newspaper anymore. Nor do I watch the news. If you know me, you'll know how much of a technophile I am. Pretty much everything I do, I do online. That includes getting updates on current events, local or global. Whenever there's a bomb attack (boko boys), or natural disaster strikes somewhere on the map, or a robbery or murder has been committed, social media is my go-to source for information, and I believe the same holds true for many others as well.

A fuel tanker blew up today in Abuja, how did I know you ask? Social Media. As you can expect, I got most of my info from social media, not traditional media like the newspapers or news stations on TV. Not to mention my friends who have been keeping each other up-to-date via WhatsApp. Traditional media has been rendered almost completely irrelevant by the rise of social media. Instead of waiting for tomorrow's newspaper, or waiting in front of the TV for a news broadcast, all I need to do is open up Facebook, and all the information I want is right there. Twitter is probably just as up-to-date as Facebook (if not more), but I don't use the service so I'm just assuming.

There's more value to social media as updates come directly from people at ground zero. Pictures from smartphones of victims and witnesses are uploaded and spread across social media in a matter of minutes. No information is censored by politically-minded bureaucrats who control TV and newspapers and there are no time constraints on social media, so everything is out there no matter the time of day. In fact, social media is so much better than traditional media when it comes to disseminating information, that even news outlets are using social media to get information out faster.
Watch this video (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qAFhQwvPY8) on how many establishments including news outlets are using Google+ Hangouts on Air as a medium for interacting with viewers, and listen to what is said at the 0:42 mark by someone who I assume is a reporter, <em>"We are following some breaking news, since we can't be on the air, we are live on Google+, if you have information you can join this Hangout"</em>. Social media one, traditional media zero.

Many people say that social media is making us "less social" in the company of friends and family. That might be true, sometimes. But the benefits of social media far outweigh the "problems" it causes.

There are a lot of community-run page on Facebook that has been tirelessly posting updates, keeping people informed of the conditions in different parts of the world. This is the kind of coverage you can only get via social media. This is the true strength of social media. Dissemination of knowledge in real-time, by hundreds of people, to hundreds of thousands of others. Don't look at someone who is staring at their phone as someone who is anti-social. In times of darkness, social media is what keeps the world connected.

Do you have a contributions to make as regards the above article? We'd be pleased to know your thought on this issue.

Phones / I Don't Think Every Flagship Device Needs To Have A Big Screen by Techdisqus: 4:03am On Dec 03, 2013
Several months after Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 was released into the wild, the rumors about the device's successor started to swirl across the nether-regions of the internet, but it didn't take long for them to get picked up and circulated. There's nothing surprising there, though. Rumors and speculation are a common courtesy here in our line of work. And the Galaxy Note 3 rumors themselves weren't all that surprising, either.

We heard about faster processors, better cameras, thirteen (exaggeration) different models, metal and glass, and a loss of AMOLED displays. We heard it all. One of the more common pieces of speculation was the display size, though. We kept seeing the reports go back and forth: the Galaxy Note 3 will have the same size display as the Galaxy Note II, or the Galaxy Note 3 will have a display that's actually quite a bit bigger than its predecessor.

For obvious reasons, I saw a lot of unrest with those latter rumors. At 5.5-inches, the Galaxy Note II's display was plenty big already, and if Samsung was honestly thinking of making it "quite a bit bigger," well, that seemed almost pointless. Thankfully, though, Samsung didn't go too crazy with the size increase, and bumped the Galaxy Note 3 up to 5.7-inches.

Not bad.

We've embraced big screens in the mobile market. It's just something that's happened, and while the adoption rate has increased, many manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon. LG, HTC, and many others all have their own versions of devices with big display. And, in most cases, it looks like many of them are looking towards the bigger display size as the "go-to size." Meaning, as we move into 2014, we may see the 4.x-inch display size thin out considerably.

Back in November, while rumors about HTC's M8 device were spinning at a constant rate, I asked all of you what you thought HTC could do to top the One. I was happy to see that not a lot of people thought a bigger display would do the trick. At 4.7-inches, the One is plenty big already, and it has one of the best displays on the market.

But, the rumors of HTC's next flagship device suggest a different tactic from HTC. According to the reports that have surfaced of the unannounced unicorn device, HTC's not going to keep the screen size the same, but instead make it bigger. It could be anywhere between 5- to 5.2-inches.

It won't be the biggest phone on the market, but it is a sizable increase from the One. And it goes to show that manufacturers are finding that a 5-inch phone seems to be the perfect size for the mass market.

I wish I could agree.

I honestly don't think a flagship device needs a huge display. While I've grown accustomed to using the 5.7-inch display on the Galaxy Note 3, I certainly don't think it's the perfect display size for me. In fact, I think the One's 4.7-inch display is the perfect size and I'd honestly be okay with the display staying the asme size, as long as the company figured out a way to make the already great display even better.

Admittedly, there's something nice about a phone that's super thin and has a big display, but not because of the display itself. Simply because it's amazing how big it doesn't feel, courtesy of the decreased profile. I think it's a great leap in technology. But that doesn't mean I want every flagship out there to have a thin frame and a huge display.

I'm obviously in the minority here (not counting iPhone fans, mind you), but hopefully I can find some like-minded folks around here. Do you think all flagship devices should have a big display? Or do you think a flagship device with a 4.7-inch display is big enough? Does every device need to be 5-inches or bigger these days? Let me know what you think.

Technology Market / Google Kicks Cyanogenmod Installer Out Of Play Store by Techdisqus: 6:37am On Nov 28, 2013
Popular Android tweak tool CyanogenMod Installer has been pulled from the Google Play store, after developers Cyanogen were warned by Google that if they didn’t yank it, the search giant would. Released earlier this month, the CyanogenMod Installer Application effectively opens up an Android device to easier installation of the CyanogenMod package itself; as we ourselves found, it could take a regular Android phone to a modded one in just minutes. However, Google now says, it’s encouraging users to void their device warranties, and has to go.

“After reaching out to the Play team, their feedback was that though application itself is harmless, since it ‘encourages users to void their warranty’, it would not be allowed to remain in the store” CyanogenMod head moderator Abhisek Devkota wrote today. According to the company, there was no option to leave the installer app in place – Google’s Play Store support team effectively warned that if CyanogenMod didn’t take it down voluntarily, it would be removed anyway.

“We have complied with their wishes while we wait for a more favorable resolution” Devkota says.

It’s worth noting that the removal of the installer application does not mean CyanogenMod is pulled; or, indeed, that it can no longer be installed in a relatively easy way. CyanogenMod hosts the files itself, and by allowing an Android device to install applications from “Unknown Sources” in the settings page, it can still be added to a phone or tablet.

What the Play store app had meant, though, was a more streamlined process to achieve that, Devkota laments.

“We’ve seen hundreds of thousands of installations of the application, proving the demand for more choice, and that the need for an alternative Android experience exists” he points out. “As we work through this new hurdle, we will continue to make available and support the installation process via our own hosting services.”

CyanogenMod now plans to submit the Installer app to Amazon’s AppStore and Samsung’s App Store, though it’s unclear whether either company will have the same concerns as Google does.

Technology Market / Re: How To Transfer Music Into Your Ios Device Without The Need Of Itunes Sync by Techdisqus: 7:18pm On Nov 27, 2013
@ ITBomb "The application is called iTools, a handy application available for both Mac and Windows PC for free."
Technology Market / How To Transfer Music Into Your Ios Device Without The Need Of Itunes Sync by Techdisqus: 7:00pm On Nov 27, 2013
When it comes to transferring your music on your iOS device (iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch) through Apple’s proprietary software iTunes things can get a bit annoying since it often requires you to sync the whole library, even when all you want to transfer is just one song. The process often takes a ridiculous amount of time depending how large your music library is. Now thanks to the 3rd party developers, there’s an application that will help you transfer your music library without using iTunes.

The application is called iTools, a handy application available for both Mac and Windows PC for free.

How to Transfer Music To Your iPhone/iPad/iPod Using iTools:

Step 1: Connect your iOS device to your PC/Mac and then launch iTool.

Step 2: After you’re connected, you’ll be presented with a number of options on the left side of iTools. The options will include; Applications, Media, Photos, iBooks etc.

Step 3: Drag the music files you want to transfer and drop them in the media section and you’ll be done.

That’s it, we’re done. The biggest advantage of this application is that you can transfer individual music files without having the need to sync the entire library, which will be saving you a lot of time. You can also transfer your applications, photos, and iBooks using iTools.

Technology Market / Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Is Coming To Android In December by Techdisqus: 8:34am On Nov 27, 2013
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for Android was a fantastic remake of the original with solid controls, a smooth frame rate and all the charm of the original. But not many people look back and think, “I want to play Vice City again!” No, that honor is reserved for the great Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. And that title is coming to Android and other mobile devices in just a month!

San Andreas, the favorite classic GTA game, will feature remastered graphics (dynamic shadows, enhanced models and greater draw distance), new touch controls, a new checkpoint system and full controller support.

I’m incredibly excited for this game to come out, and I know many others are. We have a special place in our hearts for San Andreas, which is probably the most ridiculous and over the top GTA ever released. It comes to Android and other mobile platforms sometime in December, so we don’t have much longer to wait.

Webmasters / 6 Ways Google Webmaster Tools Can Improve Your SEO Strategy by Techdisqus: 9:20am On Nov 26, 2013
Most search experts rely on Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) to analyze the technical aspects of a website. These experts focus on data like crawl stats, page errors and rich snippets.
In addition to technical analysis, I recommend using GWT for basic on-page SEO improvements. Here are 6 easy ways to use Webmaster Tools to improve your on-page SEO.

1. HTML Improvements

Under Search Appearance, you will find HTML Improvements. This report provides a snapshot of any issues with your site’s meta descriptions and title tags, along with a record of any content that isn’t indexable.
In the SEO world, we know that it’s important to have unique meta descriptions and optimized title tags. This report allows you to easily identify title tag/meta description issues and prioritize your efforts.

For example, in the screenshot above, you can see that 634 pages have a duplicate title tag. If I were to click on the “Duplicate title tags” link, I’d be taken to a screen listing all 634 pages, giving me a quick and easy way to identify page titles that need to be updated.

2. Content Keywords

Under Google Index, you’ll find Content Keywords. This tool allows you to determine not what you think your site is about, but how Google sees it.
It shows the keywords that are used on your site, along with keyword variations and significance. These data help you quickly determine if you need more content created around certain keywords, themes and topics. It also shows which pages the keywords appear on. Very helpful! (See the examples below; keywords were shaded out due to confidentiality.)

3. Structured Data

Structured data is a helpful way to explain the content of your website to the search engines — which can, in some cases, can help with rankings and traffic. If you have structured data on your site, GWT has a feature that shows the type of structured data that Google was able to detect on your site, along with the URLs containing each type. You can find this report under Search Appearance > Structured Data.
Note: This tool includes only the top-level entities discovered on a page. For example, if your page contains a schema.org/Event that in turn contains a schema.org/Place, only the Event item will be counted.

4. Data Markup Helper

Under Other Resources, the Structured Data Markup Helper allows you to tag the data fields for events, products and more on your site.
If you aren’t sure where to begin with structured markup, this is an easy to use point-and-click tool. The nice part about this is that HTML changes are not required. Your mouse highlights and tags each key piece of data on the appropriate page of your website.

5. Sitemaps

The Sitemaps section allows you to view all the sitemaps that you’ve added (or Google found) along with statistics such as the last date it was processed and the number of pages submitted and indexed. These stats can be viewed by content-type, meaning Web, video, images and news.
Another great feature is the sitemap test option; you provide the URL of a sitemap, and Google scans it, quickly detecting any errors that need to be fixed.

6. Removing URLs

If you need to remove a URL from Google’s index, you can use the Remove URLs feature in Webmaster Tools. This can be a very powerful tool, but use with caution! Only use this tool if you want to permanently remove a URL (as opposed to redirecting it).
Google gives a great example in their help section — if you have accidentally displayed confidential information such as a credit card number and you need to have a page removed, you can request expedited removal of the URLs. You will find this tool under “Google Index” in the left-hand navigation.

Webmaster Tools For Fast, Easy On-Page SEO Fixes

I find that these tools help me prioritize SEO improvement efforts and reduce analysis time. But these six features just scratch the surface of what Google Webmaster Tools has to offer. I encourage you to explore the ways in which GWT can help you implement an effective on-page SEO program.

Gaming / Electronic Arts Gives FIFA Manger The Boot by Techdisqus: 8:34pm On Nov 25, 2013
Electronic Arts have ditched plans to release any future entries in the FIFA Manager series citing strong competition in a niche market for the franchise’s decline.

EA has cancelled plans to release any future entries in the FIFA Manager series explained the “very tough” decision in an open letter. Excerpts are republished below:

I’m writing to tell you that FIFA Manager 14 will be the last installment of the football simulation series marketed by EA Sports. This probably comes as a big disappointment to many of you, and it is understandable that you would ask why.

The football manager genre at this level of sophistication is highly specialized and primarily played in two countries (England and Germany), in which – on top of everything – one game has practically dominated the market in recent years. The niche market and general trend toward online and mobile games were also contributing factors.

Moreover, FM had reached a crossroads at which a new engine and/or corresponding online technology would be the only way to give the series a boost. When all these factors were evaluated, it led us to the decision to blow the final whistle.

All of us, the team at Bright Future and our colleagues at EA Sports, loved and still love FIFA Manager. It’s a game that has captivated many fans over the years, and been our pride and joy since its first installment FIFA Manager 2002.

We were also lucky to have a very dedicated community. Your passion and commitment to FIFA Manager is unrivaled, and made the series a great joy to work on.

You have our heartfelt gratitude. We hope you’ll keep playing FM as long as possible, and that the fan sites will go all out to expand and improve the game wherever they can. For all your years of support and all your passion for our game, we thank you.

The most recent entry in the series, FIFA Manager 14, was published by EA Sports on Windows Operating System in late October 2013.

It launched one week before the release of the latest entry in Sega’s genre leading Football Manager series, Sports Interactive’s Football Manager 2104, which is available on PC, Mac and Linux.

Phones / Gold HTC One Smartphone Gets Official by Techdisqus: 4:22pm On Nov 25, 2013
After weeks of sitting on a terribly guarded secret, HTC has finally let the cat out of the bag by introducing a gold variant of its popular One handset. As gold seems to be becoming a bit of a thing in the smartphone world. Following the launches of both the gold iPhone 5s and gold Galaxy S 4s, HTC today officially took the wraps off of a gold version of its One flagship.
This gold version has same technical specifications as the normal ‘One’ which includes a 4.7-inch 1080p display, 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, 4-megapixel UltraPixel rear camera and Android running beneath HTC’s custom Sense user interface. The only noticeable change is the external color of the hardware.

The company is yet to announce any solid launch dates, but we can be sure that we will all be able to give the gift of HTC branded gold this Christmas.

With the way phone manufacturers are churning out gold versions of their flagship phone, I’m sure a gold Techno isn’t too far off either.

@ Wallflower, I kinda agree with you on the GOW and RE but for the COD, its a no no.
Have you played Black Ops? the gun play started from the beginning at the bar where Mason was with Frank Woods and Joseph Bowman through to the finish of the game. And Black Ops has a clearer and realistic story line (Cuban missile crisis) than modern warfare.
Gaming / Top 10 Must Play Playstation Games by Techdisqus: 9:12am On Nov 25, 2013
With the PlayStation 4 now available in Nigeria, thanks to Jumia. I'm already going bunkers with the game titles already available on the console like Battlefield 4, COD: Ghosts, Assasin's Creed 4: Black Flag and others time won't permit me to list. But as we wait to play these blockbusters I thought of definitive games that every real PlayStation must play.

From the rise and fall of the PS1, to the PS2, PS3 and even PS Vita, each console has delivered some truly memorable and legendary titles.

Whatever your taste or age, from first person shooter to simulative driving I bet you Playstation has got a game for you

As I get ready to break my piggy bank for the best PS4 games (not an Xbox fan), check out my list of 10 best games for the Playstation franchise.

1. Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
This game has been hailed as one of the most important games of all time, in my own opinion Metal Gear Solid is as recognised as the playstation console itself . With unforgettable characters like Solid Snake, Sniper Wolf, Revolver Ocelot, Otacon to name a few. Words cannot explain the awesomeness of this game, it is a must play game for any die hard playstation fan.

2. God of War 2 (PS2)
Jeez, this game is in a class of its own, a bloody game that kept you glued to your seat while playing. It is not for the weak at hear as it is as bloody and gruesome as Kratos himself. If it doesn't make any top game list, I am sure Kratos will make the list compiler suffer.

3. Resident Evil 2 (PS1)
This is one great I'm sure every playstation One played. The game kept us going with the surge of adrenalin you get while running away from and killing zombies in Racoon city. Although the makers of the game somehow lost something (I don't know what!) from the episode 5 of the game.

4. Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)
I don not want to look bias, but honestly all MGS episodes from sons of liberty, snake eater, Revengeance, etc. ought to make the top 10 list.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Gun of the Patriots is the ish as it features a much older snake. The game has everything a gamer could ever ask for; classic gameplay, great graphics, just name it.

5. Crash Team Racing (PS1)
This game drove boys mad, if you haven't played CTR then you are not a certified gamer. Crash Team Racing is the fourth instalment in the Crash Bandicoot series. The game's story focuses on the efforts of a ragtag team of characters, who must race against the egomaniacal Nitros Oxide to save their planet from destruction. During the races, offensive and speed boosting power ups can be used to gain an advantage. Please go find your playstation 1 where you hid it and play this game. You can thank me later.

6. Battlefield 3 (PS3)
Electronic Arts had to admit that this title is the most physical Battlefield game yet. Is is a FPS game and as the name suggests the game is indeed a battlefield. For gamers that love the frenzy you get from shooting but can't enroll into the military to have a taste of battle, believe me this game is for you.

7. Call Of Duty: Black Ops (PS3)
Records speak for themselves: Within 24 hours of going on sale, the game had sold more than 5.6 million copies, 4.2 million in the U.S. and 1.4 million in the UK.
From the starting to the finish, the game gives you a run for your money. With the screams of soldiers shouting "RPG" I promise you won't regret playing this game.

8. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)
One of the greatest adventure game of all time, developed by Naughty Dog (makers of CTR). Best in class gameplay, is combined with a strong story and visuals that, to this day, barely show age. The levels taking place in snowy environments, atop mountains and amongst battle ravaged settlements pop with fantastic details and levels of colour vibrancy.
Taking cues from the likes of Tomb Raider and even Indiana Jones, Uncharted never stands still, yet offers a good amount of variety, from puzzle solving to tense action sequences that wouldn’t look out of place in James Bond’s next outing.

9. Need For Speed: Most Wanted (PS2)
I'm talking about the 2005 version, Most Wanted is like other Need for Speed games, where the player selects one car and races against a time limit or other racers to reach a destination. But that's not all, the game has a soul (if I must put it that way).

10. Silent Hill (PS1)
Similar to Resident Evil in its approach to creating a horror stylised game, The developers of Silent Hill took the horror game to another level. As Henry Mason, you’re tasked with finding your lost daughter, who has gone missing in the spooky, monster filled town of Silent Hill.

If your opinion conflicts with mine, please let's know your 10 must play PlayStation games. Remember, PlayStation only (No PC, Xbox or Nintendo).

LinkedIn is a social media platform designed to connect/network businesses and business owners with each other. After signing up on LinkedIn I observed that most businesses/business owners are not using the platform to its full potential, so I decided to do research on tools that aid increase a subscriber’s overall LinkedIn experience and effectiveness. I came across several tools but will stick to the 10 most important of them all.

There is a free plan for five social networks or less and two advanced plans that run $8.99(NGN 1,500) and up per month.
