I agree that the Super Eagles need a serious rethink after the 3–0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau, but I think we need to be careful about throwing away half the squad based on one bad performance.

First, the diamond formation is not automatically the problem. The real issue is whether the players available can execute it and, more importantly, whether the coach can adapt when the game demands something different. Chelle actually started with 4-4-2 against Madagascar before switching to 4-2-3-1, so there is evidence that he is willing to change systems.

Against Guinea-Bissau, however, the conditions clearly mattered. The pitch was poor, and Nigeria struggled to play the short-passing football that the system required. Reports quoting players also suggested that the narrow shape exposed the full-backs. A 3-5-2, 3-4-3 or even 4-3-3 could have provided more protection.

But let's not rewrite history. Chelsea didn't win the Champions League simply because they played a particular midfield formation. Football systems work because of the characteristics, discipline and understanding of the players executing them. Comparing Nigeria's current midfield to a midfield containing Makelele, Essien, Lampard, Ramires or similar profiles doesn't necessarily solve the problem.

On the defenders, I agree that competition has to be increased. Young players such as Benjamin Fredrick, Nwaiwu and others should be properly scouted and given opportunities where appropriate. But dropping experienced internationals wholesale can create another problem. The solution should be genuine competition for places, not replacing one set of players with another without evidence at international level.

The same applies to midfield.

You can criticise Ndidi, Onyeka and Onyedika, but saying someone is automatically finished because of age, club situation or one poor international game isn't enough. The better question is: who can actually perform the required role better for Nigeria right now?

If younger midfielders are showing better form, energy, ball progression and defensive intelligence, give them opportunities. But they should earn those opportunities through performances rather than simply being young.

And I completely understand the argument about the attack. Nigeria shouldn't keep selecting attackers based purely on reputation. Current club form, fitness, tactical suitability and what each player brings to the national team should matter.

George Ilenikhena, for example, has already shown that he can contribute. He scored on his Super Eagles debut against Madagascar, although he was also introduced late against Guinea-Bissau.

But I wouldn't reduce the attacking pool to only three players. Injuries, suspensions, form and different tactical requirements make depth important.

The goalkeeper argument also needs some caution.

Nwabali had a poor game against Guinea-Bissau, and his positioning on the first goal attracted criticism. But saying he "made no attempt" on all three goals doesn't accurately reflect the match. He made several saves, including efforts from Franculino Djú, Dálcio and Mama Baldé.

That doesn't mean he should be immune from competition. If Okonkwo or Okoye is performing better, give them an opportunity. The national team goalkeeper position should never be based on sentiment.

Now, the Aina/pitch issue is where I think the NFF deserves serious criticism.

The latest explanation from Nigeria's team media officer was that concerns about the poor pitch influenced the decision not to risk Ola Aina, especially because of his previous injury experience on a poor surface.

So if the pitch was bad enough for the technical team to protect one of Nigeria's important players, then the NFF should have been much more proactive in raising concerns with CAF and ensuring the team was properly prepared for those conditions.

But there is another uncomfortable side to it, Nigeria cannot always complain about African pitches when we have struggled with poor playing surfaces ourselves.

If we want CAF to take pitch standards seriously, Nigeria also has to lead by example at home. We cannot complain about somebody else's potato farm while occasionally serving our opponents our own version of an agricultural project. 😂

That said, a bad pitch cannot explain everything.

Guinea-Bissau scored in the 15th minute, added another in the second half and finished the game with a third in stoppage time. Nigeria had opportunities but failed to convert them, while Guinea-Bissau looked more aggressive and better adapted to the conditions.

So for me, the real lesson isn't simply: "Sack these players. Bring these players."

It is: Chelle needs to build a team that can adapt.

Good coaches don't marry formations. If 4-3-1-2 works, use it. If 3-5-2 is better against a particular opponent, use it. If the pitch is terrible, stop trying to play Barcelona football on a farm road and adjust accordingly. 😂

And the players must also understand that playing for Nigeria is not about reputation. Nobody should have a permanent seat in the Super Eagles.

Let the younger players challenge the older ones. Let club form matter. Let tactical suitability matter. Let competition decide who starts.

Most importantly, let's scout aggressively for players who can genuinely improve the squad—not simply players who are younger or currently fashionable.

The 3–0 defeat was bad. But the answer isn't panic.

It's better scouting, better preparation, tactical flexibility, genuine competition for places and a team capable of adapting when Plan A stops working.

That's the rebuild I want to see.
