According to reports, The young woman said that she had been the victim of domestic abuse from her husband and his family over her unpaid dowry for many years.
She had gotten used to the hostility, but what Rita didn’t know was that her husband, Biswajit Sarkar, would stop at nothing to get his hands on the money he felt he was owed.
“Around two years ago, I began suffering from acute stomach ache. My husband took me to a private nursing home in Kolkata, where he and the medical staff told me that I would be fine after removing my inflamed appendix through surgery,” Rita narrated.
The operation went well, but Rita began to feel that something was wrong when Biswajit told her that she was to talk to no one about the surgery.
Soon after returning home, she began experiencing sharp pain in her lower back, but despite begging her husband to take her to to the hospital, he flat-out refused.
The truth about Biswajit’s behavior came to light when relatives on her father’s side came to her aid and took her to a medical center.
There, an ultrasound scan revealed that the woman’s right kidney was missing.
“I was shattered,” Sarkar recounted. “I then understood why my husband implored me to keep quiet about the surgery. He sold my kidney because my family couldn’t meet his demand for dowry.”
According to Rita’s father, she and Biswajit married in 2005, and at the time, her family have the groom’s gold, silver and 180,000 Indian rupees ($2,800) in cash, but they always kept asking for more.
Rita Sarkar filed a complaint with West Bengal police, and both Bisjawit and his brother Shyamal Sarkar were taken into custody, charged with commercially trading human organs and detaining a woman with criminal intent.
During his interrogation, the husband admitted to selling Rita’s kidney to a buyer in another state, but claims that it was all legal, as she even signed a consent letter.

Duisburg’s Dutch goalkeeper Mark Flekken had picked up a water bottle behind his own goal line and was not even watching the game against Ingolstadt when the inevitable happened in the 18th minute.
After hosts Duisburg had seen a goal harshly disallowed, Ingolstadt quickly moved the ball up the field. Duisburg defender Gerrit Nauber headed back to his goalkeeper, not realizing that Flekken was still behind the line with his back to the ball. Stefan Kutschke ran in to score unchallenged as Flekken turned round too late.

According to Economist Intelligence Unit’s Safe Cities Index for 2017, Singapore ranks the second safest city in the world, just behind Tokyo the Japanese capital.

In 2016, the island country’s police recorded 135 total days without any reported crimes including snatch-theft, house break-ins and robbery.
According to CNBC , the low crime rate means many small businesses enjoy little concern about shoplifting or burglary.
In fact, many local businesses take few precautions when closing shop at night. For instance, in a certain business district, many ground shops don’t have windows, locks — or even doors.
A Starbucks located in Raffles Place, one of Singapore’s busiest underground train stations has no formal doors. Rather, a small rope when tied across the door, indicates when the store is closed with displayed merchandise still intact.
However, surveillance is highly prevalent with about 100,000 cctv street installations in the city-state, which has a population of about 5.5 million people.

Investment › How Oil-rich Norway Have So Far Avoided The Dutch Disease by tellodds(op): 6:13am On Feb 24, 2018 |
The term, Dutch Disease, was coined by economists after the Netherlands suffered a decline in manufacturing following the discovery and quick shift to major petroleum riches. https://tellodds.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/industrial-2670536_640.jpg
Some other countries have fared worse.
In Venezuela, Angola, Nigeria and even Gabon, discovery of the black gold and the reliance on its tax revenue for public expenditure has depressed productivity and income.
Catching the Dutch disease has long been a concern in Norway, western Europe’s biggest oil and gas producer.
However, according to Bloomberg , after almost five decades of production and no major symptoms in sight, researchers at the Norwegian central bank are ready to give the Western-Europe country of 5.3 million people the all clear.
In fact, the discovery of oil has actually increased productivity across the Nordic economy, according to a new 39-page Norges Bank working paper by economists Hilde Bjornland, Leif Anders Thorsrud and Ragnar Torvik.
The “value-added" per worker in the economy increased with the oil boom, as there’s learning by doing in the oil service industries that spills over to the other industries,” the economists said.
The researchers say that Dutch Disease and so-called Learning by Doing theory have been paying too much attention to the spending effect which features a rapid rise in inflation and real exchange rate after a huge revenue increase due to oil income.
The oil sector is Norway’s biggest export and makes up 14% of the economy.
While the country needed foreign expertise to discover oil in the late 1960s, it has since transformed large parts of its industry to become a global supplier of oil and gas technology, replacing less productive sectors.
As the study puts it: “shipyards workers who used to be welders are today experienced in complex deep sea technology.”
Norway has also helped shield the economy from the spending effect by channeling a huge chunk of its oil cash into a sovereign wealth fund, which is now worth over $1 trillion.
The fund serves as a piggy bank for future generations and as a cushion in difficult times. The government made a debit on the fund for the first time in 2016 after the country was hit by an oil price shock.

Christianity Etc › Remembering Billy Graham: Life And Times Of The World's First Televangelist by tellodds(op): 7:00am On Feb 22, 2018 |
Mr Graham who passed on yesterday, has preached the gospel to more number people in live audiences than anyone else in the world, about 215 million people worldwide have once listened to him.
https://tellodds.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Billy-graham-e1519278081705.jpg
Here are other Interesting Facts about Billy Graham (1918 – 2018)
His formal name was William Franklin Graham Jr. Born November 7, 1918, he grew up on his family’s dairy farm near Charlotte, North Carolina.
Graham said he grew up dreaming of becoming a professional baseball player but “The talent for baseball obviously was not there.”
The later famous preacher was turned down for membership in a local youth group because he was considered “too worldly”
Aged 14 in 1933 during the end of alcohol prohibition in the United States, Graham’s father forced him and his sister Katherine to drink beer until they got sick This created such an aversion that both avoided alcohol and drugs for the rest of their lives.
At the age of 15, a young Graham made a personal commitment to Christ at a tent revival meeting featuring traveling evangelist Mordecai Ham.
Billy Graham held his first citywide crusade in 1947 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The mass meetings attracted thousands of people in one venue to hear Graham speak. He popularized the use of the term ‘crusade’ for his meetings named after the Christian crusaders who captured Jerusalem.
In 1954 aged 36, Graham held the biggest crusade London has ever seen. On March 1, about 120,000 people trooped into Wembley to hear Graham speak.
The stadium administrator for the first time, allowed people to stand on the pitch. Up to 1 million people in total attended the crusade over the coming days.
Graham preached to live audiences of nearly 215 million people in more than 185 countries and territories throughout his 80-year ministry and reached even more via mass media.
In his six decades of television, the televangelist was principally known for hosting the annual Billy Graham Crusades , which he began in 1947, until he concluded in 2005, at the time of his retirement.
During his crusades, he was known to always announce an ‘altar call’ for new converts, frequently along with the hymn, ” Just As I Am.” He was also popular for his holding the bible in one hand, waving it and and exclaiming over the mic,“the bible says…”
Graham’s role as a counselor to American presidents was widely known. But perhaps most extraordinary is just how many presidents he has advised. Graham has met with every occupant of the Oval Office since 1950, starting with Harry Truman, which amounts to 12 of the 43 men who have ever served as President.
Tagged an informal Pastor to Presidents Graham was credited with helping George W. Bush stop drinking. The first time the pair met, Bush, who was much younger at the time, was drunk after having several beers and glasses of wine, he told CNN. His father, George H.W. Bush, invited the preacher to the family’s compound in Maine. The pair spoke about religion, which helped start a turning point in young Bush’s life.
In the summer of 1957, Graham preached nightly for 16 consecutive weeks in New York’s Madison Square Garden to a packed audience. He shared the lessons of Sodom and Gomorrah from the Bible, substituting “New York” for the names of the cities of sin, according to the New York Times.
Graham was a friend to civil rights legend, Martin Luther King and in 1963, he posted bail for King to be released from jail during the Birmingham campaign .
He became a target of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1960s after planning an integrated crusade in Birmingham, Alabama in the aftermath of a church bombing that killed several black children. The clan repeatedly knocked down his meeting bill-posts and he had to use police protection during his travels and meetings.
He repeatedly refused to visit Apartheid South Africa. When he did during his first crusade there in 1973, he openly denounced apartheid . Graham also corresponded with imprisoned South African leader Nelson Mandela during the latter’s 27-year prison sentence.
Hour of Decision, his weekly radio program broadcast around the world for more than 50 years.
Graham received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989, the only Faith preacher to do so.
He won Good Housekeeping’s Most Admired Men Poll, in 1997. He became No. 1 for five years in a row and was 16 times in top 10.
The preacher regarded as one of the most influential men of the 20th century, was repeatedly on Gallup’s list of most admired men and women . He appeared on the list 60 times since 1955, more than any other person in the world.
In 2001, Queen Elizabeth II awarded him an honorary knighthood, Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE).
Billy and Ruth Graham To eliminate the suspicion of infidelity, Graham vowed never to meet, travel or eat alone with any woman other than his wife.
His wife, Ruth Graham died on June 14, 2007, at the age of 87. The Grahams were married for almost 64 years.
https://tellodds.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Billy-and-Ruth-Graham-300x209.jpg
At the time of Ruth Graham’s death, it was announced that they would be buried at the Billy Graham library site.
Graham suffered from Parkinson’s disease since 1992. He said his planned retirement in 2005 was because of his failing health.
Even when he stopped preaching was still writing books, granting interviews and also maintained his newspaper advice column ‘Graham’s My Answer’ which appeared in newspapers for more than 60 years as of 2017.
Graham died on February 21, 2018 at his home in Montreat, North Carolina at the age of 99.

The incident which happened at a farm in South Poland resulted in a broken arm for one of the workers sent to recapture the fleeing beast.

According to a Polish news show, the animal apparently sensing a doomed fate should it be sent to the butcher, quickly made a dash for safety as soon as she saw the lorry heading for the abattoir being prepared for loading.
Instead of boarding the lorry, it took off, rammed the farm’s metal fence before heading to the nearby Lake Nysa.
After the cow’s owner, known only as Mr Lukasz, dispatched workers to get back the cow, they only ended up trying as the animal broke one of the worker’s arms.
Taking the well fought escape further, the brave beast went seaborne. The owner reportedly saw the mammal dive underwater, swimming to one of the islands at the middle of the lake.
When firefighters sailed to the island in pursuit, the cow went back into the water, swimming about 50 metres to a nearby peninsula.

After a week of unsuccessful attempts to get the cow back, Mr Lukasz gave up and began providing her with just enough food to stay alive.
A vet called in to tranquillise the frightened animal told Mr Lukasz he was out on gas cartridges, and would take several days to requisite.
The cow which never gave up its bid to live finally attracted the attention of a local politician who offered to pay the owner in exchange for leaving it free and undisturbed on the island.

After his four-year-old son Julius’s cancer diagnosis, nearly a thousand colleagues responded to a manager’s appeal.
“Without this great support, I would be unemployed,” the grateful father told a local paper.
When doctors told Mr Graff in January 2017 that Julius had leukaemia, a cancer of the blood cells, he quickly took all his allowed holiday leave.
The first nine weeks of Julius’ treatment had the then three-year-old confined to a bed.
Mr Graff, 36, was afraid he’d lose his job once he finished his unpaid leave.
However, a HR manager intervened and with the approval of management and support of the workers union, Manager Pia Meier called on employees of the company Seidel and a subsidiary in central Germany to contribute to an overtime fundraiser.
“The reaction of our employees was incredible,” she said.
Within a fortnight of posting sign-up sheets, a total of 3,264.5 hours were donated.
Overwhelmed by the generosity of fellow staff, including trainees who had never seen him, Mr Graff wept with joy upon realizing that he could take more than 12 months off his job to take care of Julius.

Spokeswoman for the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) Phyllis Chikundura confirmed the arrest in the capital Harare, “Yes, he has been arrested on allegations of abuse of office over the doctorate of former First Lady Grace Mugabe,” she said, adding that he has been charged to court.
Prof Nyagura is being accused of awarding the PhD without due process and the approval of both the University Council and the Senate Committee.

Mrs Mugabe controversially graduated with the Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Social Studies in September 2014.

Science/Technology › 1 Million+ Snapchat Users Sign Petition to Reject New App Design by tellodds(op): 6:42pm On Feb 16, 2018*. Modified: 5:12am On Feb 17, 2018 |
More than one million people have signed a petition requesting Snapchat to reverse its latest redesign. https://tellodds.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Snapchat-e1518801606358.jpg
The controversial new design was rolled out by the social media company last month to ‘separate the social from the media’.

However, a Change.org petition, started last month by Nic Ramsey, a Snapchat user from Australia called for an immediate roll back of the interface alleging that users were now resorting to ‘risky methods to reverse the update and reinstall an older app version.
“With the release of the new Snapchat update, many users have found that it has not made the app easier to use, but has in fact made many features more difficult,” a section of the statement read.
The changes, according to the company were intended to separate interaction with friends from brand content – including that of celebrities and influencers.
Formerly, Snapchat users were able to swipe left from the app home screen to check their inbox, or right to see the 24-hour posts by friends, celebrities and brands they followed. They could also swipe right a second time to see a Discover page that had categorized content from media sites.

The new design however combine stories and messages from friends on the left screen. Collated stories from brands and celebrities and brands including curated media content are all in a panel on the right.
Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel insisted that combining posts from friends and celebrities blurred the two and ‘had contributed to the rise of fake news’.
The redesign has been so unpopular who complain it complicates navigating desired content and some got fed up that they considered deleting the app to reinstall an earlier version.
“…your friends aren’t content, they are relationships. We are separating the social from the media and reorganizing Snapchat around your relationships to make it more personal,” the 27 year old founder wrote.

Celebrities › Prince Who Always Wanted To Be King Dies At 83 by tellodds(op): 5:13am On Feb 15, 2018 |
Prince Henrik of Denmark, the French-born husband of Queen Margrethe II who was popular for publicly expressing his sadness at never being named king, has died, aged 83. https://media.npr.org/assets/img/2017/08/03/ap_110608019961-95f9225bdc5db2365807ef6b3b91d1e172bcfe1b-s900-c85.jpg
“He passed away Tuesday night, surrounded by his wife and their two sons,” the palace announced.

The controversial royal had been hospitalized last year with diagnosis of a lung infection and also had dementia.
His flamboyant lifestyle was both loved and frowned at by Danes.
Born Henri Marie Jean André de Laborde de Monpezat on 11 June 1934 in France, Prince Henrik married the then-crown princess Margrethe in 1967. They met while he was a diplomat, stationed in London. https://meredith.images.worldnow.com/images/16081891_G.png?auto=webp&disable=upscale&width=800 The prince moved to Denmark just before his wedding in 1967, changed his name to Henrik and converted from Catholicism to protestanism as a mark of respect.

When his wife became queen in 1972, Henrik didn’t mince words to the media while expressing his frustration at still retaining his title of a Prince. His request to be called King didn’t endear him to his subjects. https://1v1d1e1lmiki1lgcvx32p49h8fe-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/prince-henrik-prince-frederik-queen-margrethe-960x540.jpg
Instead, many Danes considered him arrogant with a thirst for recognition.
Prince Henrik was outraged when in 2002, his son, Crown Prince Frederik was chosen to represent Queen Margrethe at a New Year’s ceremony instead of him.
The shocked Henrik dramatically flew to France seeking a moment to ‘reflect on his life’ and stayed there for almost a month.
He later told a Danish tabloid that royal staff had pushed him into “third place in the royal hierarchy”.
He expressed being ‘humiliated’ and ‘destroyed’.
“For many years I have been Denmark’s number two,” he complained.
“I’ve been satisfied with that role, but I don’t want to be relegated to number three,” the embittered Prince added.

In April 2015, the Prince strangely cancelled coming to Margrethe’s 75th birthday celebrations citing ill health; he suprisingly showed up in Venice, chilling at a tourist-packed square less than two days later.

Car Talk › Re: The 1901 Car Race That Made Ford by tellodds(op): 8:35am On Feb 14, 2018 |
Winton as usual was confident and his car, the “Bullet,” with about 70 horsepower, and a line of winning records gave him enough reasons to be so.
Henry Ford meanwhile had never raced before and his car produced just 26 hp. He was the undisputed underdog and the 8,000 spectators with the enthusiastic news media were almost certain who the winner will be.
It looked as though Winton would have a cheap win. He pulled away at the start and opened up a lead of as much as a fifth of a mile. Ford trailed by almost 300 yards. His inexperience was obvious; letting off the gas into the turns, while his opponent drove through turns with speed.
However, Ford improved his driving and slowly began to close the gap after 5 laps. On lap seven, Winton’s car suddenly developed fault and slowed down with sputter and smoke..

Christianity Etc › Valentine Meets Ash Wednesday by tellodds(op): 6:11am On Feb 14, 2018*. Modified: 8:45am On Feb 14, 2018 |
Love or Penance? For catholic christians, today is St. Valentines’ day and is also Ash Wednesday.
For the first time since 1945, Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day falls on the same day. A similar co-incidence happened 1934, 1923, and 1877, and will repeat in 2029.
https://www.jumpshot.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Valentine.jpg
The Feast of St. Valentine is celebrated annually by catholics on February 14, in honor of an early saint, St. Valentine of Rome.
Ash Wednesday, observed by many western christians including catholics, is the first fasting day of Lent before Easter. The 40 days Lent period mirrors Christ’s 40 days fasting in the wilderness.
It’s a case of love in Lent or as some may point out, an ‘appropriate way’ to start Lent.
To some others, it might be a mix-up, one that clashes a joyful and romantic annual affair with a pensive and moody ritual.

“With Lent itself, it’s a constant reminder of how God has been good to us,” Catholic priest Rev. Benjamin Butler says. “But also how in our individual lives, we’re called to love God and grow in that love even more,” he added.
Last year, Valentine day shoppers spent $18.2 billion in the U.S, one of the few countries keeping Valentine’s day sales statistics. https://images2.sina.com/english/china/p/2009/0212/U135P200T1D218016F14DT20090212053829.jpg Couples racing in a Valentine's Day competition in Hong Kong
Consumers are expected to spend $19.7bn and $528m on Valentine presents and treats this year in U.S and Australia respectively.

Car Talk › The 1901 Car Race That Made Ford by tellodds(op): 4:32am On Feb 14, 2018 |
After his first auto business failed, Henry Ford turned to racing to restore his reputation. The 1901 ‘sweepstakes race’ was not just Mr Ford’s first, it became the race that restored his credibility and encouraged lenders to back him in his next venture, The Henry Ford Company.
https://www.remarkablecars.com/photos/1901-henry-ford-sweepstakes.jpg The 1901 Sweepstakes at The Ford Museum
In the summer of 1901, Henry Ford (38) was in hard times. His first car venture, the Detroit Automobile Company, had shut down after producing only about 20 vehicles in 2 years.

His financial partners had begun to to question his skill as an engineer and prowess as a businessman. Mr Ford reasoned that building a fast and reliable race car will re-establish his credibility and his day came on October 10, 1901.
His one and only race at Grosse Pointe, Michigan against top racer Alexander Winton became a world changer by paving the way for an eventual establishment of The Ford Motor Company.
Ford had a strong backroom team. His lead designer was Oliver Barthel. Ed “Spider” Huff worked on the electrical system, Ed Verlinden and George Wettrick did the lathe jobs, and Charlie Mitchell was the blacksmith.

The car they produced was ahead of its day. The induction system was a crude form of mechanical fuel injection, patented by Ford. The spark plugs may have been the world’s first to use porcelain insulators which Ford had a Detroit dentist make for him. The insulators were to reduce inconsistent sparks which causes misfiring, a common problem for the early cars.
Ford also had a vision for the automobile as a mass-produced, inexpensive, reliable vehicle. At the time, that the automobile was a luxury machine for the rich and far beyond the reach of the average worker. https://www.irishcentral.com/images/MI%20px%20Henry%20Ford%20model%20T%20car.jpg Henry Ford poses with a later model of his car

Total U.S car production then was about 4,000 from more than 50 automobile companies. The industry had no clear direction and the major source of motor power was steam.
Mr Ford was certain that someone will enlarge the industry to the mass-automobile market he envisioned. He was eager to be the one who did it.
That’s why Ford and his team built their race car and named it “Sweepstakes” though it co-incidentally bore the same name with the race.
Automobile manufacturers had already started using racing to demonstrate the worth and superiority of their products.
Mr Ford entered Sweepstakes in the race event promoted by the Detroit Driving Club, to be run on the afternoon of Thursday October 10, 1901 on the club’s one-mile dirt oval in Grosse Pointe Michigan, just east of Detroit.
According to the published entry list, 13 of the race drivers were from Detroit. Others were from as far away as Buffalo, Pittsburgh and New York, but the favorite was Alexander Winton, from Cleveland.
An established, automobile builder, Winton was said to be the most famous and successful racer in the United States at the time.
The 10-lap race had a cut glass bowl trophy plus $1,000 prize for the winner.
The media and over 8,000 spectators were ready and so was Henry Ford and his ‘Sweepstakes.’
With an estimate of 26 horsepower, Ford and Barthel claimed the car peaked 72 mph (115.87 kmph) during its road tests. As at 1901, the official worldwide top speed for automobiles was 65.79 mph (105.88 kmph).
Many of the race cars had multiple issues; one even developed a mechanical fault on the start line. Soon the contestants had dwindled down to two.
The race was now between Henry Ford and Alexander Winton...
