Programming / Bold Step Into Freelancing by temmiezy1: 2:58am On Jan 21, 2016
My love for software development started during my early years in college when i wanted to be different.
Software development was a rough bumpy road where a lot of computer engineering students would gladly love to avoid.
I took on the challenge head-on which some obvious deterrent conditions such as limited access to learning materials, slow internet unlike what we have now, no mentors to learn from and college seniors knowledge hoarders who were not willing to share.

Those conditions seem a distant memory now. I have been a professional software engineer for over 5 years, being involved in projects of various sizes ranging from small to enterprise web applications with a combined daily client usage of over one hundred thousand. These web applications have been developed for a variety of industrial sectors such as Transportation, Logistics and Courier Services, Human Resource Management, News Media, Real Estate, Educations etc. My coding language is PHP and using frameworks such codeigniter, Yii, Wordpress etc

My most recent full-time role was at The GIG Group that has as part of its constituent companies the largest land transport company in its region of the continent developing and managing some solutions first of its kind in the land transport industry for that region. Solutions include a custom built online ticketing web application. the features include online ticket reservation, seat reservation, card payment integration(Mastercard and VISA), mobile app(android, windows) trip scheduling, group hire/reservation etc.

Though i enjoy programming and every project i've worked on excites me in its uniqueness, i've never been fulfilled with my rigid work times, commuting and been confined to the four walls of the office before i can work. I always wished for flexible work times not limited by location. I want to be able to wake in the middle of the night and work on projects and i dont need to leave my comfort zone to work on projects. So i tried out freelance, elance, outsource etc only to discover that clients on this sites pay attention more to low-cost of work done over quality and experience of freelancer.

Then i came across an article on bloomberg business about talented programmers becoming freelancers thus rating Toptal Web Engineering Group very high on the freelance recruiters list so i checked them out. Their mode of recruitment is unique, and unlike most freelance recruiting website, they pay more attention to the content and quality of the freelancer. The features that blew me away include
- they recruit talented developers and designers
- multiple stage screening process
- independent of location

I am currently in the process pf registration and i hope i can become part of their PHP Developers Community because it would be awesome to not only work on more challenging projects than i have before, but i will also be rubbing shoulders with the best in the field.
