BREAKING! Finally The ASSU Strike Has Been Officially Called Off Posted by David olufemi Finally, the ASUU STRIKE which has lasted for more than a month has been official called off. While addressing a press conference in the Federal Universities of Technology, Minna, the Niger State capital, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi said the union had agreed to suspend the strike after a meeting of the National Executive Council which started on today. The President also listed the components of the agreement which the union had with the Federal Government, which led to the resolution of the long-drawn crisis. While speaking at a press briefing today on resolutions which the Union has reached during the National Exercutive Council meeting NEC in Federal University of Technology FUT, Minna, the president of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi said and we quote: “Finally, NEC resolved to suspend the strike action embarked upon, with effect from monday, September, 18, 2017 and directs its branches to resume work forthwith”. Minna— Parents, students and government officials, Tuesday, expressed relief as the a-month old nationwide strike, by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, over non-implementation of 2009 agreement between the union and the Federal Government, was called off. Addressing journalists in Minna, today, after long hours of brainstorming, ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said the union decided to call off the strike after diligent and careful appraisal of various report, especially the resolutions signed last week by ASUU and the Federal Government. ASUU, however, said it would continuously and diligently monitor the implementation of the joint resolutions in all branches, facilitate the inauguration of the implementation monitoring committee on the report of the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities, ensure faithful compliance with the report and ensure that ASUU members do not suffer any loss of deserved benefits arising from the strike, specifically the unresolved issue of the Earned Allowances. ASUU also highlighted the remaining areas in the 2009 agreement, which require policy and legislative steps for the challenges facing the system to be effectively addressed and expressed hope that the provisions of the extant agreements for revitalisation of the university system will imme-diately focus on theseneeds. Accordingly, Ogunyemi declared that with effect from Monday, the one month old strike has been suspended and thereby directed all branches to resume work forthwith. ASUU’s expectations ASUU listed some of its expectations from government. They include government’s faithful implementation of the resolutions reached and signed, even as it vowed to work assiduously for the revitalisation of Nigerian universities where students and parents will begin to see the fruits of the struggle. ASUU expects that the revitalisation funds for the next five years will be provided as agreed in the resolutions, while the implementation monitoring committee will ensure that funds released will be used to meet genuine revitalisation needs of public universities with strict and disciplined supervision of the implementation processes by the universities themselves. ASUU also expects the monitoring committee to conclude, within a short time, the verification of the level of implementation of the Earned Academic Allowances and that government should also, as agreed, provide fund for the payment of outstanding balance. It also expects government to act quickly to engage the services of the universities in special consulting services as contained in the resolution. |

1. Why are the youths the determinant of who wins an election but the most excluded in the sharing of the spoils of elections? 2. Why are the youths not invited when major decisions are to be made in different parties? 3. Why are youths not considered as stakeholders in political discussions even when the winning of any election depend on them? 4. Why are the youths not remembered in the sharing of contracts and appointments? 5. Why do our political leaders use youths as hatchet men to destroy other youths? 6. Why is our political space occupied only by elders in exclusion of the youths? 7. Why do our political leaders quarrel only when competing for a particular political interest but are the first to unite in abandonment of the youths that were the hatchet men in their fight? 8. In the early days of democracy, politics was infiltrated by young and vibrant youths, what has changed that made today youths less fit in political considerations? 9. In the early days of democracy, the present crop of elders contested elections and won, what has made the youths incapable of raising enough funds to vie for political offices? 10. How many youths are ready to support a fellow youth in an election without monetary inducement? 11. Our present crop of elders became independent at their early age but today our youths are increasingly turned into beggars incapable of taking care of their basic needs. What really went wrong? 12. Today's youth with a vast pull of energy is the most affected by unemployment and joblessness. Why is it so? 13. Why do we have more youths as praise singers and sycophants in politics today? 14. Why has gossip and backbiting became the stock in trade of youths before their political leaders? 15. Why do our political leaders consider the youths as objects to be used and dumped only to call them in their next political engagement? We need to refocus by giving to our contributions and steps to make the youths relevant in politics.
