Webmasters / GNOME 3.36 Desktop Environment Slated For Release On March 11th, 2020 by terrybndl: 1:41pm On Sep 14, 2019
The GNOME Project published today the release schedule for the next major version of their acclaimed and widely used GNOME desktop environment for Linux-based operating systems, GNOME 3.36.

While the GNOME 3.34 desktop environment is not out yet, as it is expected to be officially unveiled tomorrow, September 12th, the GNOME developers are already planning on next major release, GNOME 3.36, which is currently slated for release on March 11th, 2020.

Development of the GNOME 3.36 desktop environment, which will be available under the GNOME 3.35.x umbrella, will start with the first snapshot, GNOME 3.35.1, which is scheduled for public testing release on October 12th. It will followed by a second development snapshot, GNOME 3.35.2, on November 23rd.

Only three development snapshots will be released for GNOME 3.36 before the beta instead of four as it happened until now, and the third one, GNOME 3.35.3, is currently scheduled for next year on January 4th. The two GNOME 3.36 beta versions will be available on February 1st and February 15th respectively.

Lastly, the RC (Release Candidate) milestone is scheduled for February 29th since 2020 is a leap year. After that, the final release of the GNOME 3.36 desktop environment will be officially unveiled on March 11th, but it will arrive for most GNU/Linux distributions when the first point release hits the streets at the end of March 2020.
"Stable maintenance releases will be offered over a longer period"

The development cycle of the GNOME 3.36 desktop environment will kick off soon after the GNOME 3.34 desktop environment is released, but will come with some important changes for both users and developers. For starters, stable maintenance releases will be offered over a longer period.

Furthermore, new releases will be published when they're ready, no matter the day of the week, stable and unstable releases will be published on the same day, and new tarballs will be published on Saturday instead of Monday. The longer maintenance release period will start with GNOME 3.34, which will be supported until March 28th, 2020.

Webmasters / Canonical Fixes Linux 4.15 Kernel Regression In Ubuntu 18.04 LTS And 16.04 LTS by terrybndl: 1:27pm On Sep 14, 2019
Canonical announced today the availability of a new Linux kernel release for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS systems running the Linux 4.15 kernel, which fixes a regression.

Earlier this month, Canonical published major Linux kernel security updates for all supported Ubuntu Linux operating systems, addressing no less than 28 security vulnerabilities. However, one of the patches also introduced a regression causing the Linux kernel 4.15 on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS systems to crash when handling fragmented packets.

"USN 4115-1 fixed vulnerabilities in the Linux 4.15 kernel for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Unfortunately, as part of the update, a regression was introduced that caused a kernel crash when handling fragmented packets in some situations. This update addresses the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience," said Canonical in the security advisory.
"Update now"

Canonical urges all users of the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) and Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS (Xenial Xerus) users using the Linux 4.15 kernel to update their systems as soon as possible to linux-image 4.15.0-62 and linux-image 4.15.0-62.69~16.04.1 respectively, replacing the linux-image 4.15.0-60.67 from the previous kernel update.

The regression was also patched in the Linux 4.15 kernel for Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Container Engine (GKE), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Microsoft Azure Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS-HWE), and Oracle Cloud systems, as well as for cloud environments and Raspberry Pi 2 devices, so update your installations accordingly.

To update your systems, please follow the instructions provided by Canonical at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/Upgrades. Make sure you reboot your computer after installing the new kernel version to make all the necessary changes. Additionally, you may need to reinstall any third-party kernel module you have installed.

Webmasters / Windows Update Will Let Windows 10 Users Set Bandwidth Limits In Absolute Value by terrybndl: 1:16pm On Jun 12, 2019
With Windows 10 19H2 still nowhere to be seen despite the fact that it should be finalized in some three months, all Microsoft’s focus appears to be on the spring 2020 feature update.

And while improvements in the existing preview builds are nothing major at this point since we’re so far from the expected release date, it looks like Microsoft is already paving the way for some very handy refinements.

One of them concerns Windows Update.

As you probably know already if you’re a long-time Windows 10 users, Microsoft has been trying to refine the experience with updates for several releases already, and the upcoming 20H1 update will follow the same line.
"Absolute bandwidth"

Specifically, the most recent preview build for Fast ring insiders introduces more advanced bandwidth limits in Windows 10, as discovered by Twitter user Albacore. Windows 10 already allowed users to set up bandwidth limits when downloading Windows updates, but the original controls only came down to the percentage of measured bandwidth that the OS could use.

Beginning with Windows 10 20H1, Windows 10 will allow users to set the absolute bandwidth that can be used for downloading updates. The values must be entered in Mbps, as you can see in the screenshot here.

Additionally, this latest preview build also comes with new ways to add calendar appointments. Users are allowed to create new entries in their calendars straight from the flyout that can be launched by clicking the clock in the system tray.

Windows 10 20H1 preview builds are currently available for users in the Fast ring. According to Microsoft’s release schedule, it should go live for production devices in the spring of 2020, and bigger changes should make their way to testers as we get closer to this expected launch date.
