Turkey’s president was forced to intervene after the boss of Turkish club Trabzonspor locked four match officials in a stadium overnight after they failed to award his side a penalty. Trabzonspor were denied a last minute spot- kick in their recent 2-2 draw with Gaziantepspor, much to the frustration of the club’s president Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu. The officials responsible for the decision were subsequently locked in the stadium until 4am the following morning, with their release secured by the country’s president Recip Tayyip Erdogan. ‘I told stadium security not to let the referees leave until the morning, until I arrived, but a very important person called me and asked me not to cause embarrassment in Turkey and around the world,’ he told Turkey’s Dogan news agency. ‘He [Erdogan] promised the [penalty] incident would be investigated.’ The referees were escorted to safety by special forces, with the Turkish Football Federation now investigating the incident. ‘This unlawfulness cannot be justified by any erroneous referee decision and has caused deep discomfort in the whole football world,’ a statement said. ‘All efforts will be made to ensure that the related persons be tried not only under sports law but also criminal law.’ Let’s see Jose Mourinho beat this… Source: www.metro.co.uk/2015/10/30/turkish-president-forced-to-intervene-as-trabzonspors-boss-takes-referees-hostage-5471724/ |

The man has been the most under-performing governor in the south east and Nigeria as a whole. This should be the 50th time he has been stoned in his eight years. Now he wants to impose a candidate on us? Abians will always say NO to ochendo and his cohorts. 1 Like |

Freedom and respect for the press should be adhered to. These men did no wrong; they were guilty of doing their jobs. Its high time our military puts an end to such arbitrary arrests and unlawful detentions. 1 Like |

kokoA: There was no uproar then because Mbaka, a Christian, was speaking good of a fellow Christian. The uproar now is majorly because he as a Christian is indirectly supporting a muslim against a fellow Christian. |

Senate President, David Mark, Saturday in Otukpo, emerged as the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the fifth time in the Benue South Senatorial district primaries. Mark scored 384 votes out of 389 to win nomination as his opponent Mike Onoja stepped down at the venue of the senatorial primaries. Onoja told delegates just before the commencement of votes that his decision to drop his bid was premised on the cordial relationship he had enjoyed with Mark over the years. According to him, they both share the same ideology of development of Idoma land. “I was not induced in any way to step down for the Senate President whom I holds him in very high esteem as the number three citizen of this country,” he said. Despite his withdrawal from the race, the party insisted that delegates voted to fulfill the party’s constitution. Mark has been a member of the Senate since Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999. He however became President of the upper legislative chamber in 2007 |

The constitutional requirement of age qualification for certain elective posts has consistently been a deterent or impediment to the effective role Nigerian youths could play in governance. As a Nigerian, you attain the age of majority at 18 years. Most of our youths are bubbling with enthusiasm, naturally endowed leadership skills and the desire to effect a change in the governing of the society, but what hinders them? Some certain clauses in the constitution. Historically the youths are the fulcrum of every society and every society that sidelines its youth in the political affairs of state is liable to go astray. In Nigeria unfortunately, the youths are actually sidelined and disqualified in the affairs of the state by virtue of their age. The constitutional age requirement for a Presidential contestant is 40 years, while the Governorship and senatorial aspirant is 35 years, and Houses of representatives, assembly and others is 30 years. This discriminatory clause has inadvertently created a scarcity of youths in Nigerian governance, which is one of the countless issues our dear country faces today. It was not always like that though, as during the pre and post-independence Nigeria, the Nigerian youths were at the center and also the heartbeat of the nation's politics and governance. The likes of Tafawa Balewa, Maitama Sule, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Anthony Enahoro, Samuel Akintola, etc. started their political life at youthful ages. Balewa, for example, was elected into the Northern House of Assembly at the tender age of 34 and later into the Legislative Assembly at the age of 37. Shehu Shagari‘s political life started at just 21 years old and by the time he was 23 in 1948, he merged his political organization, The Youth Social Circle, with other political organizations to create the Northern People’s Congress (NPC). Maitama Sule on his part was made a minister in his twenties and there were many other examples like that. I illustrated the above examples in order to make you understand what I regard as ‘youth political participation‘ which means the youths participating in the decision making process of the state. I was reading an article by Chimamanda Adichie, author of the Purple Hibiscus, where she noted that “70% of Nigeria’s population is under 35 years" and there has been for a long time a political culture of ignoring the youth, and surprisingly, the backing for such culture stems from the constitution. Despite the emasculation wrought by poor education and limited job opportunities et al, the average Nigerian youth is brimming with energy and optimism. This energy and optimism is bubbling and can be channeled for good into fighting for political change, good governance and ultimately push Nigeria towards her true destiny as the beacon of hope for the African continent. Interestingly, President Goodluck Jonathan, during his address to Nigerian Youths on the occasion of Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration on May 29th, 2014, acknowledged the demands of Nigerian youths, observing that Nigerian youths have been marginalized for so long and this has robbed the country of the opportunity to harness the energy and creative potential of the Nigerian youth for national development. President Jonathan also spoke at an international youth conference, organised by the Nigerian Young Professionals Forum (NYPF), with the theme, “Capacity for Change for a New Nigeria” where he advocated the removal of the constitutional age limit of 40 years for a Nigerian to become president. He described the provision as discriminatory against young Nigerians, who have the energy, ideas and other qualities to lead the country to greatness. He challenged the youth to forward a constitution amendment bill to the National Assembly for the removal of all discriminatory provisions in terms of age and promised to support them. “The youths have no limit in terms of number and capacity to lead this country to greatness. The only limit is that for youths to contest as President, they need to be 40. If Gen. Yakubu Gowon was able to rule this country at 32, there is no reason why the youths should not be given the chance today" I humbly submit that the only requirement as regards age, for election to political posts is that the aspirant must be an adult; nothing more, nothing less. I take full responsibility for this article; It was authored and edited by me. |

Popular gospel singer, Kenny Saint Best, KSB has lost her bid to vie for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly after she was defeated in the primaries that was held today, Tuesday, 2 December, 2014. According to latest reports, the singer, who contested to represent Ikeja 1 State Constituency, was defeated by Folajimi Lai Mohammaed, the son of the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed. It was gathered that Mohammed, the Managing Director of Knightsbridge Dredging Limited, defeated the budding politician to a distant second. Brown was one out of the many entertainers who decided to try their hands in politics. The likes of 9ice, Kate Henshaw, Bob Manuel-Udokwu, Ejike Methuselah, Tony Tetuila and Kenneth Okonkwo, will know their fates in the days to come. With today’s result, it is uncertain if Mrs Best will remain a member of the APC going by what observers say is a huge disappointment for her. Another winner in today’s primaries is Damola Kasumu, the grandson of the late Iyaloja General of Lagos, Abibat Mogaji, who will represent Ikeja Constituency 2. Meanwhile, Popular Nollywood actor, Desmond Elliot emerged as the candidate to represent APC in Surulere constituency in the coming Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), election in 2015. It was gathered that Desmond defeated his opponent, Kabiru Lawal, at APC primaries held in Lagos on Tuesday. |
