TITLE : Empty Democracy ARTIST: Ogini Bernard MEDIUM: Thread, Newspaper print, and pictures (Multi Media) REVIEWER: Samuel Akpan Power corrupts; absolutism can suffice for Absolute Power. However far we seem from the Caesarian military antics, we tend to edge on to its starting line. Some skeptic visioneers have even peered through mirrors of divinities, now including money, gamble and history, to tell tales of a dog who will return to its vomit imminently. There have also been idle talks of the Skunk shedding off his spikes and smell to dwell and look like weasels. But how long will his scheme pull through before his spikes revolt and his foul smell choke seeming ‘predators’? Slowly, consistently, our past of ‘ranks and boots’ haunts present ‘agabada’ realities. There is still that bugle that wakes sleeping heads by morning; reminding us of our tedious work shifts. There is still that Commander who authoritatively denies our access to amenities, loans and overdue promotions. There is still that boot banging on our warehouses demanding heavy taxes folding on business. Religious, social, academic and economic coup de etat with faiths waging wars, communities in territorial or residence battles, aggrieved students demonstration and insatiable teachers’ strike actions, snakes rebelling against banks respectively. Also are unfortunate KIAs who serve as negotiation teasers for sober herdsmen, befuddled boko haram and corporate terrorists in pension houses. However, generals always receive decorations, for ‘outstanding service and loyalty’. The labours of our heroes past shall never be in vain; hence, we gave ‘Power’ a vacation and embraced Democracy - FREEDOM! A taste of freedom for everyone; each having peculiar difference - slight or great (largely determined by freedom barter treaties). Freedom bartering freedom for peanuts manipulatively to acquire freedom. Eventually, it is a tussle of freedoms. Freedoms warring freedoms, Freedoms stealing freedoms and laundering it far away, Freedom stashing away undisclosed freedom. Freedom grew wings, resisting law with nuances of selective ‘immunity’. Freedom then feeds on the muffles of the Silenced. Above all, freedom imposing freedom; in its smokescreen parlance “Free and Fair Elections” Art is Mirror. It makes for commendation or QUESTIONING of appearance. This work by Ogini Bernard is a propaganda masterpiece that features the nexus of Nigeria’s ‘ranks and boots’ or ‘khaki’ leaderships and her evolution to present day Democratic interspersions and interrogations – Questions. it features pictures of Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Gen. Murtala Mohammed, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, Ge. Ibrahim Babangida, Gen. Sani Abacha, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar. Ogini uses this medium to ask committal questions like; Is Nigeria totally democratic? Have our leaders brought in military antics to democratic forefronts? How free is freedom of ‘our democracy’? Are there other crops of leaders than our ‘heroes past? Indeed a scintillating artistic expression to apprize the past with the present in the bid to awaken nationalist consciousness. Arts like this Silk Art are resonating echoes from the ancient ruins of great fortresses built on greed, coercion, tribalism, war, rage and power, reminding us of definite crumble if we do not seek answers to QUESTIONS. What would men fear if there was no power? FREEDOM! If voting could make a difference, they wouldn’t have let us do it. Is our democracy empty? Samuel Akpan samuelakpan3191@gmail.com 08131530028

In the dawn of 2019, Toluwalope Ajayi, a graduate of the University of Lagos has initiated herself into the republic of Nigerian artists who are experimenting and creating series of artistic movement through their artistic series and paintings. For one who is familiar with the Art scene in Nigeria, it is no doubt that among artists who have birthed their own style and now crossing boundaries with such expressions is Mufu Onifade- debuting his art movement, Araism in the wake of 2011. Mufu’s Araism is a peculiar kind of painting that covers the entire canvas with some pattern, irrespective of what is in the background. With Mufu and other artists breaking remarkable grounds in Nigerian Art history, the works of Toluwalope Ajayi are pronouncing her as an Art prophet whose name should be included in contemporary Art discourse as she leads the creative movement, Stonism. An acronym for a body of work (painting) developed with stones. Continue reading: https://emiralty./2019/12/05/nigerian-female-artist-toluwalope-ajayi-pilots-art-movement-stonism/ |

The twist keeps getting twistier and twistier – that’s comparative for ‘twisty’, just so you know – as we continue getting a back and forth from housemates, Tobi and Cee-C. In the first two weeks of the reality game show, fans couldn’t get enough of the nature of Tobi and Cee-C’s relationship, with some even thinking that the former might have been brainwashed by the latter. Later on, in course of the show, we got to think that Tobi has gotten over Cee-C but recent actions between the both of them got us thinking again – but now, the banker has revealed that everything he ever wanted from Cee-C, he has gotten. He made this known while speaking with fellow housemate, Miracle on Wednesday night. According to Tobi, the first weeks in the house were used by him to study Cee-C. In his words; “I have gotten all I needed from Cee-c. She has shown me all I needed to see and I no longer have anything to do with her, I’m telling you the truth. “In the first two weeks of our stay here, I love her genuinely. But later I discovered she wasn’t it, you understand? “See, that girl is poisonous. I’m not apologetic for anything.” This comes after the head of house gave us a hint as to what he earns annually – he’d stated that if he were to win the Pepsi challenge ultimate prize, alongside his strategic partner, that will amount to N2.5million for him only, adding that itis quite more than what he earns annually from his bank job. While some artistes such as Davido, Mayorkun, Reekado and Tiwa Savage seems to be hitting the high notes, some of their label mates have been lagging behind and will soon be forgotten if they don't drop a hit song this 2018. 1. Yemi Alade; Top of the chart is Mama Africa singer, who has lost touch with her Nigerian fans. She has been dropping music with vague titles, like her Tum Bum jam. Her lyrics game is not impressive enough. . 2. Dremo; With a host of collabos and his popular cover for Panda, this lad had everything in him to succeed ahead of Mayorkun when they both joined DMW in 2016, but alas!, the moment he signed the dotted line, the world saw a very lazy Dremo. http://247mediang.com/top-5-nigerian-artistes-desperate-need-hit-songs-2018/ |
