Still dedicated to all the faithful readers of COUNTLESS and its blunders. To all that ve voted for me and still planning to vote. I appreciate it. Thanks and Jah bless. Even if I don't win, am already happy with the turn out of you guys. Thanks alot. I promise to be better. Remember, a story is coming up after this. Titled: The Dog Attendant. Watch out! 135. COUNTLESS. My heart was beating rapidly against my chest as I anxiously listened to hear what Nike would say. "Doctor," She continued. "Remember I told you I once caught Darous hiding under the bed in my mummy's room, yes?" "yes, and you said your mother claimed to be unaware of his presence there when you asked her about it.." "fine. The thing is, I knew she lied to me. I swear to Gawd. Then for five solid months, after my brother was born, and prior to her death, I begin to question my mother to tell me who impregnated her. She keep on telling me she's too ashamed of telling me. She said, she's afraid my sister and I would never forgive her if she tells us who impregnated her...." "so she never get to tell you? I presume..." Doctor Larah chipped in. Obviously getting more interested. "no, you don't understand..." "then make me understand quickly, I've got a lot of patients that needs my attention right now." "hun...my mother always said one thing, she always say, it will take her dying moments to tell us who the father of Chris is. She said thats the only way she can avoid our disappointment in her." "so, what else?" "when she was fighting for breath, instead of staying with her, I ran to the intercom to call the attentions of the doctors attending to her. My mother then signalled to me to come closer, I went to her panicking and when I was closed enough, she mouthed something to me. Due to my tensive mood, I didn't understand at first and she managed to say it louder the second time...." "and what did she say?" The doctor asked as my heartbeat increased to the antilogrithm of milisecs. "she said...." "what are you doing there?" That voice came from behind me and it also interrupted the transmission I was getting from inside. I turned around quickly and was met with the questioning look on the face of an elderly nurse. I swallowed my saliva quickly and begin to rack my brain for any lie to give her. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to come up with anything and the devil also wasn't on standby to get me one from his playstore. Maybe my subscription have finish ni o, or the devil is busy, preparing my space for me in hell ni o, I don't know. All I know is that, I was short of lies. "erm...erm...erm....." The nurse watched me with a squeezed look as I continue to struggle for words. She grew tired of waiting and signalled to me to get out of the way. I complied quickly and I watched nervously as she grazed past me and enterred the labouratory where Nike and the Doctor were having their talk. Darousmart have been outsmarted by Adenike, his wife's younger sister. She had been two steps ahead of me all this while. Knowing what she's capable of, I had no doubt she won't stop until the doctor succumb to her request. And once she does, everything will be over. Her sister will hate me forever and thats one thing I can never live with. A plane can't fly without a pilot, so also my Portugal can't survive Russia without the C.ronaldo of Adejoke. Its simple as that. I didn't even bother to listen on again as I took that as my cue to leave the hospital. I turned around swiftly and began to march fast out of the place. The atmosphere outside indicated that we are already in past midnight. I glanced around and saw my car, still parked on the same spot where Lewis had parked it earlier when we rushed my wife and child here. I got behind the driver's door and opened it. Lewis had slept off on the back seat. I tapped him gently and his eyes grew wide when he saw me. "how are they doing? Are they okay now?" He questioned rapidly as he tried to sit upright. "they are fine....I need to get them something from one hospital there." I told him while searching for my keys in my pockets. "what?" "erm...you'll know when I get back..." I replied sharply, as I was still searching for my keys. "are you looking for this?" Lewis said and I turned around, only to see him holding the keys in his hand. "yes... I don't know its still with you." I collected it from his hands. Inserted it in the ignition hole, twisted it and the car produced the only sound it was destined with. "do I need to follow you?" "no, but let me drop you at your house. Everything is fine now." I ended with an assuring tone that gave him little or no chance to think the otherwise. I checked the time indicator on the dashboard. It reads, 02:17am. I reversed the car and zoomed off. *** After dropping Lewis at his house, I drove myself to another private hospital around Elite road. I got there and requested to see the doctor. Within five minutes, the male doctor was available and I told him my sole reason for coming. "okay. We will prepare the lab and get everything done in the next two hours.." The doctor said in his thick voice. "two hours Why will it take that long?" I questioned suprisingly. "are you in a hurry?" "yes! I need to be in heaven in the next 2hours!" I wanted to tell him that but I just replied him with the first word. "oohh! You know, um...the nurses are busy now. Its midnight already and we have got a lot of pregnant women in the delievery room. So its only me and one other nurse that will be attending to you." He stated amicably. Hmm, Irony of life. Thousands, if not millions of children are busy entering this world on daily basis. They have no idea of what's waiting for them in this confused world. I just pity them, because instead of staying with God in heaven and be enjoying the never-getting bored company of the legendary angel Michael and angel Gabriel, they still want to poke their tiny noses into the ugly affairs of this world. Shebi, its still fair for those of them that will be born in foreign countries like Paris and England, I just feel sorry for those coming to this herdsman-ful Nigeria. They won't know what hit them until they start crying and the nurses that are suppose to pacify them started shouting; 'keep kwayet! You little muppet, na me koba you?'. Even, those that will be forming big girls and big boys by refusing to cry, a certain spanking ruler awaits their soft bottocks. Obviously, the nurses are telling them that they need to cry before they can be fully seen as a member of this planet earth. Thats the initiation due we all had to pay before our admission into this world was finalised. Right from birth, nothing has ever been easy for humans. Another ironical fact is, I've already grown increasingly tired of this life and while I was already planning to log out of it, those babies are just getting ready to log into it. But I pray they don't end up the same way am about to end up. Karma, fate and other agents running the affairs of this world have already proven to me at every turn that I can never be truly happy. Every woman in my life, - apart from Joke and my Mother - have contributed to my present predicament. Ranging from, Beatrice, to Adedoyin, to Doris, to Nike, and Chioma, yes Chioma! The b!tch that totally ruined my joy. The devil's Argentina that finally ended my Nigeria's chances of progressing in the Russia of happiness that I found in loving Joke. Tell me, how do you expect me to continue living in a world that has nothing good to offer me? Abeg, suicide is the answer jare. "you need to fill this form." The doctor's voice cuts into my thoughts. He handed me a pen and a small form with headings 'BLOOD DONATION FORM' written on it. I collected it and began to fill it out in earnest. I returned it to him after I was through and he began to scrutinize the details I filled in. "Mr Samson, your blood type is very rare o. Infact we have three patients right now in need of your blood. You are God sent." He smiled. "please, can you first make sure you send enough to the hospital I told you about before you use the rest on others? Please?" "ofcos. We will. I will make sure your friend's child got his adequate supply first before we use the rest on others." He replied smiling. "can I trust you on that?" I questioned with hard looks. "ab...absolutely...follow me please...." He placed the paper in a folder and led me out of the office. *** The first thing I did after leaving that hospital around 04:30am of that fateful sunday, was drive straight to my second house in a far away place from the first one. Its a duplex and neither Joke nor her sister knew of the location but Joke knew I had other houses in Abeokuta. I was planning to take her to every place habouring my properties after we come back from the honeymoon we will never have. I got there around quarter past 5 in the morning of that sunday, and after entering the building, I went straight to the master bedroom. I took off my cloths and all that was left on me were my boxer and singlet. I sat on the large bed and took out my phone. A lot of congratulatory messages began to flood in, the moment it finished booting. I was about to start reading them when a call from Nike stopped me. I instantly knew the reason why she was calling me. I checked the time again and made some calculations. Its already over two hours since I left the hospital where my wife and child was admitted. Its certain that my blood result is already out. It also mean that my secret is out. That b!tch has find out. Am doomed. Thats it. That must be the reason why Nike is calling me. Hmm. The call rang away and barely 5secs later, it came again and yet I refused to pick it. I don't even have the nerves to pick the call, talkless of talking to her. 'pick it, you don't know if she's only calling to tell you something else.' A voice from within spoke to me. I hissed and dropped the phone on the bed. I rose up and began to pace the room nervously while the phone continue to ring. Should I pick it? Should I not? I was still deliberating on what to do when the phone suddenly stopped ringing. I heaved a sigh of relief and before I could even say fvck, a message notification beeped. I approached the bed and picked the phone with trembling hands. T.B.C |
Updating today guys. Thanks for being there. Ah, its not easy being a Messi fan. Yesterday was a proof of that. Some Nigerians at the viewing center nearly kill me yesterday. Na Gawd save me. What Nigeria needs right now is constant electricity and for the killings of innocent people to stop. We don't need a world cup yet. Even if we win it, where will they keep it? Aso rock or senate house? When they can't even sucessfully keep a Mace, how will they keep a World Cup? Abeg shift make I see road jare. Updating today... |
Bluehaven:you are yet...ok.... |

toluxad:na so we see am o. My lady. Thanx 4 commenting. |
Its with utmost sense of sincerity that I write to appreciate each and everyone of you that has voted for me. I appreciate your appreciation. I promise not to let you down. I promise solemnly with my future father inlaw's left kidney to be better than this. Thanx for making me recognise this new version of myself. More importantly, thanx for taking me for who I am. Thank you for being a wonderful reader to an amateur writer. 134. COUNTLESS. After Nike had spoken, I stood there feeling dethered on what to do next. Apparently, the more I hesitate, the more room am giving Nike to get more suspicious of me and more determined to see this to the end. The next thing I knew, after waiting for more than two minutes without uttering any word is Nike grabbing my arm, beckoning to the Doctor to lead the way and walking me out of the office. That was how I was being led out of the office to where my blood sample will be taken for testing. I couldn't resist nor protest. I just followed. Save for the few instructions the doctor stopped to give her nurses on the way, nothing else delayed us till we entered the next office where a lot of gadgets and medical apparatus were in abundance. The room was illuminated under the effect of the big fluorescent bulb in the white painted ceiling. The doctor pointed a chair adjacent a big lab table for me to sit down. I took a brief secs to survey the chair before I finally settled on it. I waited nervously as the doctor began to perform some medical rituals before she finally came to me. Nike, who was standing closeby, rested her bum-bum against the edge of the table beside me. She was ready to see this to the end. She would make sure my blood was taken. She would want to be sure nothing went wrong. She would certainly make sure there's no room for me to blackmail the result or intimidate the doctor in making any mistake. I've already admitted myself to the school of fate. If this is how things will end, then I had to see it out like brave men will do. I'd already started this music sometimes ago, and its mandatory I dance it to the end. Its my cross and my burden to bear. "don't stiffen your body Mr Darous..." The doctor said as she used a cotton wool soaked in methylated liquid to clean my sweating left arm. "I'll be quick and fast. If you co-operate well, it will be less painful. I just need a little quantity of your blood in this syringe." She placed the syringe on my arm and looked into my eyes with a questioning brow. "just get it over with." I said as I offerred myself totally for her. I caught a sinister grin on Nike's face the moment the doctor inserted the syringe into my arm. I hissed inwardly as if I don't care and calm my self down for the doctor to finish her work on my arm. Doctor Larah was through in a jiffy. She placed a new cotton wool on the point where the needle was extracted from in my arm. She rubbed it against the spot and wore a satisfactory look on her face before she placed the syringe on another table behind her. "are you sure that is enough?" I hear Nike say to the doctor as the latter was busy arranging some test tubes on the table. "yes...I have more than enough...just a little like this is okay." The doctor replied without looking at her. "ok o. Am just saying maybe you should take...." "take more abi?" I cut in feeling a bit angry. I then shifted forward and offered my arm to her. "why don't you get a cutlass and chop off my arm? You will get alot of blood like that." "are you angry?" She scoffed and rolled her hazel eyeballs at me. "you should even be happy your blood is going to work on Chris...." "we are not sure of that yet." The doctor replied, still facing what she was doing. "sure or not. I know it will work." Nike reiterated and focused her eyes on me. "what?" I questioned her gazing after some moments of uneasiness.. "what, what?" She questioned back with hands folded across her chest. "whats that look?" "what look?" "that look..." I replied. "which look?" She asked again with a squeezed face. "the one you gave me before?" "I don't remember giving you any look...." "I know what am saying." I said a bit loudly. "you looked at me as if am hiding something." "are you?..." She asked with an expectant look at my face but before I could reply, the doctor turned to us and said, "you people are disturbing my concentration here. Mr Darous, you may go and see the receptionist now." She stated and I rose up. "what of her? Where will she be?" Doctor Larah turned to Nike and said, "she also has to be on her way to the hospital pharmacy. Her sister will need those drugs once she wakes up." Nike grumbled silently before we both proceeded towards the door. "when will the results be out?" She asked the doctor as we got to the door. The doctor checked her wristwatch and displayed a thinking face before she replied. "lets say 45minutes. Or one hour tops." "okay. We will be waiting in the hall." She stated with a grin and we both left the lab. We spoke nothing with eachother on the way before we both parted ways to carry out the tasks given to us. On the way, I had the abundance of space to think again. Every signal and facial language displayed by Nike earlier just but confirmed my guess of her smartness. I know her, she would figure things out in the next 45mins. She will know that I'm the father of Chris. And then, I would be so fvcked up. This is the time I needed an ally. Someone who can advise me on what to do to extricate myself from this messful mess. I would have called Jide to help me out, but I was afraid the idiot will also get angry with me the moment I tell him everything. He will vex for me and who knows, he might complicate things the more. Lewis, the expert neurosurgeon, will start looking for the mental sense behind everything I've done instead of helping me if I tell him. Efe and Collins are the type of friend you have but can't comfortably share your deepest dark secrets with. They are the type you only go clubbing with. They are not the type that follows you to the prayer mountain. As you can see now, am in a big problem. Like I said earlier, the plan to commit suicide is still lingering on my mind but parental duty calls first. Its a must to make sure my son will do fine before I bid this complicated word a complicated goodbye. Even to help my child, I'm running a great risk of revealing another complicated secret that can warrant a lot of controversy and mayhem once am gone. I need to make sure that doesn't happen. I can't let Joke's curses be the only thing to stop God from finally letting me into heaven. Heaven is where am going. Forget about my sexcapades, forget all my attrocities, I've also done some good deeds with my life that can qualify me for heaven. Apart from being the only one who has never curse our mathematics teacher whenever she gave us an assignment that involves the finding of X, am also the only person who never complains or grumble whenever she starts beating us for not finding the X. To me and many others, we already know we can never find X. That X must also be a bad human being, or why is he always missing? We'd been finding X since Jss1 and some of us never found it till we graduated from Ss3. Some students inability to find X has gotten them the expulsion note while others like me had manage to avoid that, with the hope of finding it one day. Enough said on X, lets get back to the story. So, am not totally a bad person. As you already know, I've spent the money I got from selling Adedoyin's mansion on taking care of the orphans and homeless. The less priviledge in her family have also benefited immensely from my selfless acts. Relying on those great deeds I mentioned above, I believe I've earned a space in the good books of God. So if I die now, the chances of making heaven seems higher than dying later. Or so, those were my thoughts. I felt someone push me from behind and when I turned around startled, I saw a female nurse walking away quickly. She was uttering some angry words at me as she hurried away. I checked my palms and saw the paper given to me by the doctor in it, then I remembered where I was suppose to go. I took a heavy step forward and a feeling of tiredness surge through my body. I'd woken up earlier than usual the previous day,(which was our wedding day) and since then, I've been unable to catch a moment rest atall. As I've been running from one problem to another. Yet, here I was, in the middle of the long lobby of the hospital, standing for almost twenty minutes in deep thoughts before the nurse pushed me. Feeling tired, I settled in a plastic chair beside the white wall and released an exasperated breath. I had barely sat down for a minute when I resumed to my thoughts again. But apparently, this time, they were thoughts on how I can get myself away from the embarrasments of after-death. Simply put, to avoid Nike and Joke finding out about my relationship with Chris. Devilishly, I smiled as an idea crept into the prison of my muddled mind. Instantly I rose up and began to walk back hurriedly to where the doctor had earlier taken my blood. My mission was to confide in her and hopefully help me out. Within the space of thirty seconds, I'd gotten back to the door of the labouratory. I was about opening the unlocked door when the voice of Nike, that came from inside froze me out and all I could do was to listen intently on whats going on. "Its unethical of my profession to carry out a D.N.A test on someone's blood without the direct consent of the person on signed papers. Am sorry, I can't do it." Thats the voice of Doctor Larah. D.N.A ke? Ah don die. So this girl is not content with guessing and assumptions, she wanted to be..... "please doctor..." Nike's voice intercepted my thoughts. "help us solve this mysery we've been battling with. Please, I beg you in the name of God..." She pleaded further. "but what makes you think he's the father of Chris? You told me earlier that your mother gave birth to that boy, then what makes you think your sister's just-wedded husband is the one that impregnated your late mother?" The doctor queried with a confused voice. "let me tell you, before my mummy died, I was the only person with her. While she was fighting for breath, she was trying so hard to tell me something too." "and what is that?" queried the doctor. T.bc |

133. COUNTLESS. Following the awful revalations the Doctor just said of my wife's condition, Nike dropped her head on the table before us and began to sniff hard. The situation of her sister was hitting her too hard. The doctor after casting her a pitied look for some moments, decided to ignore her, then focused on my anxious face and continued. "the most fatal part, and the reason why she lost consciousness was because she has also suffered a fractured skull in her head. I must tell you, suffering head injuries from falling down the stairs can have catastrophic, even tragic consequences. Since her skull already bears the brunt from the impact of the fall, then a concussion is likely to be the least of your worries Mr Darous. But you need not worry...your wife is in best hands. We will give her all the best physiotherapy and everything required of her to get back to her feet as quick as possible." She ended just as the nurse she had discharged earlier walked in and handed her a file. She began to examine it as I took the time to take a strained stroll down the path of thoughts. The thoughts of all the pain my wife is presently undergoing began to flood into my mind. Imagining what she's feeling made me to hate myself. The fact that whats happening to her at that moment was a striking contrast to the promise I made solemnly to myself two months ago. The promise of making her happiness a top priority. Its a pity that I've been doing a very poor job at keep that promise. I've been nothing but a pain in her life. Every horrible thing I've done in the past are now taking out their toll on the love of my life. She's the victim of my past. My waywardness and philandering have brought her both physical and emotional pain. I've been a total waste to myself and the people around. Even people who care about me. As if sending her father to prison isn't enough, I've also forked her sister, not to mention that I'm also the bastarrd she has been looking for. I mean the idiot who impregnated her mother and ran away. Poor Doris had paid the greatest wage for her desire to mother a male child. I just can't imagine how my mother will take the news of Joke being in the hospital on the night of her wedding day. The news would break her and it will hunt her soul for life. My mum doesn't have a strong suit for taking things like this easy. There's no way Joke will let this go. She will definitely continue her mission to leave me. Then, whats the essence of my whole existence when Joke will not be part of it? Why don't I just end it all? Kill myself and atleast have the peace I never had in life in the grave. I don't see Joke loving me again after this. There's no way, she will ever trust me again after this. Even if she did, I'll still keep on lying to her, in an attempt to bury the mistakes of my past. Although, I myself, knows that am a renowned liar. Surely there are still enough lies in my head that can last me more than ten life times. Even if I at one point, was unable to conjure up a lie to bail myself out of a situation, I always have the devil at hand to get me another lie from his play store. And the more I lie, the more Joke will love me less. So killing myself now is the only way out. If I die now, Joke will- understandably be sad for some days or months at most, but atleast I'd be saving her and a whole lot of other people from the burden of my fizzer existence. Because I don't know if I can ever stop repeating the same mistakes in my past. Its in my genes. Its my own talent. And it has already ruined my life. The funniest things about my mistakes is that, they are all avoidable. Lets look at it this way, assuming I'd not decided to pursue Chioma after seeing her in Adedoyin's car after the hotel incident with Beatrice, she wouldn't have had the chance to sugarcoat me into meeting with Adedoyin. Remember I was at the A.T.M point at Funaab, withdrawing the money Adedoyin sent to me when those robbers spotted me. It was their invasion at our house that led me to one trouble or the other before I finally ended in the intimidating hands of Doris. Everything that has happened since then had been the result of my determination to get back at Chioma. What a costly mistake that later turned out to be; seeing as Chioma was now the one that successfully get back at me. Everything started with her intervention and everything is about to end again, because of her intervention. Chioma, I admit, you've won. Since, I've known her, Joke has always detest a liar. "No matter what the situation might be, Darous, don't ever lie to me." Thats her usual quote whenever she sensed that am hiding something from her. Hence, why she couldn't bear another second with me on the night of our wedding and had resorted to packing out. While the Doctor was busy jotting something down after her last statement, Nike had stopped crying and all she was left doing was staring blankly at the ceiling. Obviously, she's lost in thought. As the other two occupants of the office appeared to be busy, I saw a glittering opportunity to walk out silently and carry out the suicide mission in my head. A life with money, wealth and fame is no longer worth living without Adejoke in it. There's no way our life can ever return to its former splendour. She's the reason why my renowned 8 inches dicck haven't tasted the succulent pink entrance of a pusea for more than eight months and somehow, I wasn't bothered by that atall. If I have to die, there's no better and more considerate way to die than die as a seven months old virgin. Who knows, maybe that can even be enough to get me into heaven. My love for my one-day-old-wife has been the only thing stronger than my unending cravings for sex. So tell me, in actual psychological understandable phenomenom, how do you expect me to live without my special kryptonite? I rose up gently and managed to disengage myself from the small gap between the chair I was sitting on and the table without raising any suspicion from the doctor nor Nike. I then began to approach the door slowly but was caught offguard by the doctor's voice as I was about getting my hand on the knob. "Mr Darous, the results of the boy's blood test just came in and...." I turned around swiftly on hearing that and faced her squarely from the spot. "what do you mean by blood test? Thought you said he's doing fine?" "I only said that to calm you down...." "calm us down? Is something wrong with my brother too?" Nike snapped it up and the doctor started shaking her head. "what are you hiding from us?" My parental instincts kicked in and I decided to abandon my suicide mission for now. I approach my earlier seat and quickly sat down. "the two of you should please calm down and let me talk..." "calm down? Does the situation seems like giving us any chance to do so?" Nike siezed her up again. The doctor let her rant out her frustration without stopping her. I myself was full of apprehension but I manage to keep my vocal cords in check. "are you ready to listen now?" Doctor Larah said as soon as Nike stopped talking. The latter only hissed and the former continued. "Good. Here in this hospital, we always do our best to make sure we lessen the pressure on our patients. Having said that, Mr Darous, that little boy has lost a lot of blood. The glass cup have cut deep into his spleen and hence the need for a blood test so we can be able to determine which blood to give him...." "and so?" I voiced out my curiousity. She released a disappointed sigh and continued. "unfortunately, his blood group doesn't correlate with any of the ones we have in our blood vault. To be specific, his blood group is 'O'- which is a very, I repeat a very rare type of blood group that can only be found in about one percent of a thousand people. Ofcouse, unless its being donated by a direct father or mother who share the same blood bracket, I repeat, its extremely hard to come by an outside donor who shares similar blood type." She ended with an exasperated sigh. "so are you saying my brother will die?" Nike who has been apprehensively quiet all the while spoke out. "yes, but its avoidable, if his parent can donate the blood asap..." The doctor replied with a subtle message underneath her voice. She must be wondering who the real parents of Chris are. "Jesus!" Nike lamented. "My own blood is A, same as my sister..." "what of you Mr Darous.?" Doctor Larah cuts in. "whats your blood group?" The question caught me offguard. I was totally dumbstruck as I begin to swallow lump and lumps of saliva. "erm...what do you say? Doc?" I stuttered out trying so hard to avoid Nike's gaze. "she asked you of your blood type!" Nike stated loudly. "I...I... I don't know." I replied. "what! How can you say you don't know?" Nike rasped out. "I..I did it once and..and have forgotten what the results are..." I lied again. "what do we do now?. Nike queried me with trembling voice as I was lost in deep thought. "there's no cause for alarm, we can have it done here and get the results withing two hours. We can only hope you share more than just your striking resemblance with the boy." "I think you said its a very slim chance for an outsider to share the same blood with him." Nike stated. "wait, are you saying Mr Darous is not related to that boy?" The doctor queried suprisingly. "not by blood, technically..." Nike replied and the doctor appeared shocked. "Chris is my mother's last born. She died giving birth to him." Nike explained furtherly. "oh my! Poor child. What of his father?" Doctor Larah asked with a growing interest in the issue. Nike siezed me up with another look before she replied the Doctor. "unfortunately, we don't know who the father is...up till now..." "eeyah! Thats too bad...well thats in the past...lets deal with this present situation first." "how do we deal with it?" I asked after working saliva back to my drying throat. The doctor stood up and so did Nike. "first we need to start looking for a blood donor that has the same 'O' negative. It might took sometime but with hope and God, everything is possible." She picked a pen and jot something down. She then handed the paper to Nike. "those are the drugs you need to get for your sister...." She took another paper and began to write on it. After some seconds, she was through and she gave me the paper. "take this to the receptionist, she will know how to guide you around the blood donor announcement." I held the paper with watery palms and began to read its contents while Nike and the doctor stood and watch me. As I was reading, a brilliant idea crept into my mind. There's no need to look for a donor. I had lie to them earlier when I said I'd forgotten my blood group. The truth is, I was afraid it will create room for suspicion if I tell them my blood group is 'O' minus. Nike might start putting two and two together, and knowing how smart and devious she is, she will definitely figure it out. And thats the last thing I want them to know. I'll rather carry that secret to the suicide grave than let them have the chance of cursing me after my death. The idea is simple and straight forward. Since I share the same blood with Chris, what I'll just do is, go home, get an expert make-up artist to help me disguise myself like an old man or someone else, come back later to this hospital and tell them I want to donate blood. Wow! Thats a brilliant idea. I chuckled happily as I stared blankly at the paper in my hand. I was about putting the paper in my pocket when Nike said, "Darous, why don't you have a blood test right now and who knows, you might be the perfect donor we are looking for?" She stated in a standard manner. Even in my shockened state, I manage to release a little scoff. "what do you mean? You heard the doctor when she said...." "the chances are slim...yeah..." The doctor cuts in. "yeah, I said it. But its worth giving a try...right?, except unless you're scared of needles...." She flashed me a simple smile and rested her palms on the table. "yes, please..." Nike pleaded intimidatingly. "hmmmm..." I sighed out as the awful reality of whats about to happen dawned on me. This Nike of a thing eh? She has always been a pain in the arse for me. Can't she just let me do this one rightful thing by myself? Ah! Finally, my life is about to end for real! There's no way she won't figure things out once the blood test is out. Is this where my secret will rip open? Chai! Is this how Joke and Nike will find out that Chris is my child? Is this how they will both know that am the basta.rd they have been looking for all this while? I can't imagine what Joke would do to me once she finds out that am the bastar.d that robbed her mother off her life. I casted a confused look at Nike and she still bears this look of 'I dare you to say no' on her face. Obviously, there's no way she will let me off this hook easily. I began to scramble my brain for another lie to bail me out of this but couldn't find anything. How do I avoid this? My initial plan of disguising myself is about to get ruined. The only option left is to run away and kill myself but then, I'd be condeming my child to death. The poor boy will die of blood shortage and that will surely provoke God to deal with me mercilessly. By running away, I'd be literally killing my child. And there's no way God will not vex for me and tell his angels to make sure I rot in the most V.I.P section of hell. "what do you say Darous?" Nike's voice reminded me that the devil is waiting for my decision. TBC. |

Dedicated to Clarabarbie. Hbd to u dear. Age with grace. 132. COUNTLESS. The moment I was staring at the ugly scene before me in an unbelievable manner was surely one of the moments when not even the best dictionary in the world nor Professor can provide you with the right words to describe what you are feeling, seeing and thinking. Those kind of moments often makes the best dictionary look less important. They render the wisest professor dull; they render the strongest of men weak. The sight of my wife's unconscious body lying on the floor(still claded in her wedding gown) and the blood covered body of my sleeping child was too enormous for me to bear. A deep sense of despair overwhelmed me and I began to cry out in agonizing pain. "My life is ruined. Ah! Its over! All hope is lost!" Such are the words I keep repeating to myself as I crawled to the sofa-bed, where my child's blood covered body was lying. I examined him with trembling hands and tearful eyes as I checked for his pulse; and thankfully, he is still breathing although he appeared to be losing strenght with each painful breath he took in. I placed my left palm on the wide cut below his ribcage where the blood was oozing from in an attempt to stop the bleeding. My own stupìd idea of First Aid. Ofcos there wouldn't have been any need for first aid atall if I hadn't allow my strong infatuation of the opposite sex lead me to my present state. I held his little hand in mine and began to pray fervently to one supreme being that-according to Joke- says exists beyond the clouds, with the vague hope that his answering machine should be faster and more efficient than that of the gawd of thunder. "Daa...aady...." The little agonizing voice of my child came out and I was shocked to the bone marrow hearing him call me Daddy. Something I'd never hear him say to me. "Chris...its okay..." I sobbed out with shaking voice. "Please forgive daddy...please...oh my Gawd! What have I done!! What have I done!!!" I continue to cry out resonantly and it was the effect of my noise that awoken Nike, who was all the while, still basking in the euphoria of all the comfort, sleeping in a sofa could provide. "whats that noise?" I hear Nike say before she rose up and began to walk towards where I was wailing uncontrollably on the floor. "oh my GAWD!" She cried out after she saw the unconscious body of her sister lying on the floor and the blood covered body of Chris. "Darous! What happened!?" She snarled at me and seized me by the collar of my suit. She began to shake me vigorously for answers as I remained limp on the floor. "did you just kill my sister and brother? Darous!! What happened to them? Why!!" "call ambu...lance...am..bu..lance...Nike!..." I managed to voice out. I remove my phone from my brest pocket and stretch it towards her with trembling hands. "Nike, please, call ambulance or Lewis...call someone now...please..they are..still..breathing!" Hearing that, she let go of me and snatch my phone from my hand. I'd already unlock the phone and after some hasty tappings on the phone's screen, I listen as she began to talk to someone whom I presume to be Lewis. *** 1hr, 20mins later. Inside the waiting hall of the big and popular Easy Heart Hospital, was Nike, Lewis and I, as we impatiently wait for the re-emergence of Dr Sulaiman Omolola, or any of her nurses to come out and give us the update on the condition of my wife and son; as we haven't hear anything from neither the Doctor nor his nurses since over an hour ago. Our curiousity was starting to drive us crazy. Nike, still claded in her wedding outfit, had asked me of what really happened. I was about to explain the whole situation to her when I started having second thoughts. How do I tell someone thats just starting to like me again that her sister tumble down the stairs as a result of my inability to tell her the truth?. How do I tell her that her sister was already packing out of my house after spending just two hours of our wedding night together? How do I tell her it was the luggage she had in her hand while falling that nearly ripped open the intestines of my child- who also happens to be her own brother? She will definitely hate me forever, hence, ensuring my existence was mirred in sorrow for the rest of my life. There's no way am telling her the truth. Instead, I'll just tell her another lie, atleast to cool her down a bit before things gets back to normal. Normal? Wait, did I just say normal? Lols. Its funny, how I still think things can still get back to Normal when nothing has ever been normal in my life before. Apart from the disruption caused by Chioma, a normal wedding is suppose to end in honeymoon, but since mine wasn't anywhere near normal, it has ended in hospital-moon. Irony of my life. Me and happiness have finally become distant colleagues. For sure, I'd do anything to be happy again. But there's no way to do that without first passing through the street of sorrow, route of loneliness and the dreadful estate of despair. And the thought of passing through all that scared the hell outta me. For sure, its a risk worth taking, but the fact that its even a risk in the first place makes it less and less intimidating for me. Hence the reason why I keep on replacing the spare tire of lie with another spare tire of lie, when I should have gone for a brand new one and who knows, maybe the car of my life wouldn't have gone through all this troubles. Even the word 'trouble' now feels like an understatement when trying to describe everything have been through in my life. So, I elusively told Nike that her sister was on her way downstairs to tell her(Nike) to go and sleep inside the room prepared for her when she accidentally fell down from the stairs and the glass of water she was still drinking had rolled off her grips and had punctured the stomach of Chris, who was sleeping very close to the base of the stairs. Poor Nike, on hearing that, began to cry painfully and at the same time blaming herself for what happened to her sister and brother. If she hadn't been so consumed with grief and pain, she would have figured the loophole in my lie, since there was no broken glass on the floor that can corroborate my explanation atall. Obviously, another spare tire of lie, when I should have taken the risk of getting a new one. Lewis, although tired, began to console the wailing little sister. Telling her not to be too hard on herself. Almost 3hours had passed before the young Doctor Lara and her surbordinates finally emerge from the long lobby that linked to the wards. She was still dressed in her white lab coat, while the big lenses on her face and the stethoscope across her neck made her overall appearance more appealing. She stood a woman of unrivalled grace and beauty. Instantly on spotting her, we all rose up fast and approach her as she was giving a female nurse a pink polythene nylon. She saw us coming and hurriedly gave the nurse a final talk and discharge her the other way. "Doctor, how's my sister and brother?..." Nike countered with worried and depressed tone. The doctor was still trying to say something before I quickly added, "doctor please tell us they are fine..please...." "calm down please, we are doing our bests..." She blabbed out. "thats the same thing they said to me hours to my mother's death...how can I be hearing this again... God please, save them for me...." Nike wailed out. Lewis again, was already pacifying her. Doctor Lara, behind her lenses took a pitiful look at the poor girl. She shook her head and glance at our respective eager faces before she spoke. "Mr Darous, I need to see you in my office right away..." "has something happened?" I queried with anxiousness. "no...not yet rather. Which is why I need to see you..." "only him? No...no...you must see us together Doctor..." Nike protested. "okay...but only the two of you..." She said and began to walk away. I quickly told Lewis to wait for us inside the now-getting deserted hall before I hurriedly joined Nike and the Doctor. *** "have your seats please..." Doctor Lara told us as soon as we enterred her fully equipped office. "am not sitting down until you tell me whats going on..." I declared. She casted me a raised eyebrow and sat herself down on the opposite chair. "please Doctor, tell us whatever it is, atleast no bad news can be more shocking than hearing that your mother has died during delievery and only one of the twins had survived." Nike stole a quick look at me as she said that and focus back on the Doctor's expressionless face. "ok, I'll be as blunt as you want. But Mr Darous, please have your seat." I obliged and she continued. "Your wife is out of life danger, and we are already working on your child. But first I must reconfirm your story. You said your wife fell from the stairs right?" She asked me. "yes..." I answered. "ok. And it was the glass cup of water in her hand that dropped on your sleeping child, hence creating a deep cut below his ribcage?" "yes Doc...whats your point.?" I queried curiously. "calm down sir. Am just trying to correlate your story with our efforts so far." "okay...go on..." "your stair case, is it spiral or a straight one?" She asked again. "erm...spiral..." "and does it have a soft floor or maybe something like rug on it?" "yes, a wool rug is on it. I bought it last year myself..." I claimed. "oh...now I understand." She sighed out and straightened her neck. "doctor, what is it? Tell us..." Nike stated impatiently. "calm down..." Doctor Lara said to her before facing me. " The rug on your stair have solved the mysery behind why there was no bruise whatsoever on your wife. Although we can't determine as of now whether there are internal bruises. I must tell you, that can be very fatal. But we will do our best. Secondly, Mr Darous, due to the impact of the fall, your wife has suffered multiple fractures in her joint regions, and also a broken wrist on her left hand." Gawd! Why this? TBC |

I turned around in an attempt to avoid the smirk and arrogant look on Jide's face and I was shocked to the bone when I saw Joke standing inches away from me. She had an indifferent look on her face that was a striking contrast to the happy one she had on before I left her alone with the photographer. It was already dark, save for the big hallogen lights that illuminated the whole compound. I rose up and held her by the shoulder and said, "whats wrong?" "nothing..." She replied sharply. "am just tired...can we go home now?" "sure...let me call Lewis to bring the car around.." I quickly called Lewis to bring the car to where we were and withing five minutes, the Rolce Royce pulled over in front of her. We waited for Nike and Chris to join us before we departed the premises to my house. We would have headed straight for Paris, where we'd initially planned to spend our honeymoon but we couldn't as the day have been far spent and most importantly, we were both tired. *** We got home at exactly 9:15pm. Lewis after bidding us goodnight, got inside his own car (which he had parked in my compound before we left in the morning) and zoomed off. The whole manshion was now occupied by Me, My wife, Her sister and my Child. We all whyned and dined together for several minutes before Joke excused herself from our midst and headed upstairs where our matrimonial room was located. Chris has already slept off on the sofa-bed adjacent the spiral staircase. Nike was in good spirit as she seems to never stop talking to me. I was indeed a happy man. "is it proper to still be calling you Darous?" Nike asked. She was sitting at my opposite on the dinning chair. "ofcos, married or single, I'll always be Darous to myself and everyone..." "am just saying now that you are married, maybe you should change it...." "ah! Why would I do that? Bearing Darous has gotten me this far in my life and why would I want to change it now? Moreover, did Messi change his name after he won the first ballon'dor?" "I don't know...am not a football fan...I love wrestling though..." She stated with a placcid smile. "okay, did John Cena or Roman Reign change their names after they won the world champion?" "nope....." "so if all the above mentioned mortals didn't change their names, why would a son of the might immortal thunder change his?" She reclined on the chair and released a breath. "I just want to tell you that am sorry for ever acting like a b!tch to you...am sorry...you're a nice man, you don't deserve my anger...you're perfect for my sister...." She stated ebulliently. "its okay...thats bygones now..." "yes, bygones, including the sex we had that time, that should be a bygone too...including all your past girl..." "Darous!" Joke's shouting of my name echoed from upstairs. "your wife is waiting for you... I guess thats my goodnight call..." With that, I rose up and dashed upstairs before Joke could call my name again. I opened the door to my room and was flabbergasted to see Joke's red and watery eyes. She was holding a picture in her hand and I began to take slow steps towards her. She threw the pics at my feet and I was dumbfounded at what I saw. There lies beneath my feet, the same pictures Chioma had taken after she had killed Adedoyin and had drugged me. The picture was showing the blurred image of me while my hands were placed on Adedoyin's neck. "what's this?" I asked as I picked the picture from the floor. She was still whimpering and managed to say, "just turn it around..." I did and for the upteenth time, I was distraught at what was written therein. 'YOU MAY HAVE WON THE BATTLE, BUT YOU WILL LOSE THE WAR ONCE YOU FAIL TO EXPLAIN THIS TO YOUR DARLING WIFE!- Chy. My throat was instantly dry. I began to shake visibly. My hands began to tremble. "Darous, whats going on? Why do I have that picture in my bag?" My wife cried queringly with a determined voice. "erm...sweetheart, I can explain..." I fumbled out. "yes am listening. Tell me or else am out of here....and just do me one favour, don't you dare lie to my face again." She declared and folded her arms across her chest. She waited for several minutes to hear me say something and once she detected that I wasn't ready to say anything, She grabbed her luggage and walked past me. I ran after her as she got to the stairs and tried to hold her, but in her attempt to disengage from me, she lost balance and I watched in shock as the joy of my life began to tumble down the steps. I descended after her and when I got down, the horror awaiting me was too disheartening. My wife's unconscious body was lying on the marbled floor while her luggage had landed on the stomach of my three years old Chris. Someone once told me that this life can be fun at times and can be sour at the next hour. But most of the time, its just the combination of both. Apparently, I've felt the sting of both in the space of 24hours. And that begs for this question, Can I ever be happy? TBC |
