Jobs/VacanciesRe: Go From Average To Outstanding Jobseeker In 3 Simple Steps by thekrine(op): 2:07pm On Aug 11, 2015
Hi tobybasten,

Don't give up on your job hunt simply because you are a fresh graduates or have no work experience; we all had to start somewhere and build up overtime. If you fall into the fresh graduate/no work experience category, simply draft a skill based CV.

A skill based CV simply captures your skills (ability to do something; expertise). There are certain skills which aid your ability to gain and maintain an employment. These skills can be developed during the course of various activities and are not only developed in an office environment.

Thus:
- A player for a basketball team will have demonstrable ‘Team Work’ Skill
- A football team captain will have demonstrable ‘Leadership’ Skill
- A debate club member will have demonstrable ‘Communication’ Skill.

Please read up the full article on www.thekrine.com to see how to draft a skill based CV:
http://www.thekrine.com/blog/writing-a-cv-when-you-have-zero-work-experience/

Feel free to email the draft CV to info@thekrine.com for a review when you are done.

All the best

Jobs/VacanciesGo From Average To Outstanding Jobseeker In 3 Simple Steps by thekrine(op): 10:53am On Aug 11, 2015
It must be very frustrating to spend months applying for jobs without receiving any positive reply. I often hear of people that have spent up to 5 years unemployed and I find it really hard to believe most times. Have you ever asked yourself if perhaps the problem is from your approach and attitude to your job search and application?

These 3 tips will certainly shorten the time you spend as a job seeker:

1. Show your competence on your CV
It’s time you stopped treating your CV as a document that contains history of your life. CV’s remain the most popular ‘instrument for jobsearch’. Ensure every entry on your CV tells a recruiter ‘This is why you must employ me’. Go through your CV and take off irrelevant information like state of origin, place of birth, marital status, details of nursery/primary school education. Introduce detailed information of your work experiences, ensuring that you clearly describe your duties/responsibilities on listed jobs – highlight your competence.

2. Tidy up your job applications
From the moment you hit SEND on your job application, recruiters start JUDGING you. They assess all sorts ‘Can she write? Does she have the right communication ability needed for this position? Is she professional enough? etc. The subject of your email, the body, attachment as well as your email address adds or removes marks from your application. Quit forwarding your CV to recruiters as a way of applying for a job, stop sending blank subjects and empty body emails. An email that reads “see attached CV” does not count as an application.
Carefully draft a covering letter to use for your job applications and paste it on the body of your email when applying for a job.
When I apply for jobs, here is the format I use for the subject of my email – Application: Job Title. For instance, if applying for a job as a Financial Accountant, the subject of my email will read as follows:
Application: Financial Accountant
This was actually the subject of the email I used to get my current job and it was the only application I sent when I decided to change jobs!

3. Prepare for your job test/interview
It is very sad to find that most of us spend several hours applying for jobs but fail at the final huddle – the job interview. You can never be too prepared for a job interview. Put in the effort to get ready for the job interview and look prepared. Prepare your outfit/appearance and also prepare your answers.
The most common interview question is usually the one that most people find hardest to answer: Tell Me About Yourself.
There are a lot of interview preparation articles online, read them up and prepare your answers.

Shorten the time you spend on your job search, do it right!

CareerRe: Got A Job Through Linkedin??? by thekrine: 6:41pm On Dec 13, 2014
Hello Maximip,

I got my current job (resumed December 1) via Linkedin. The job was advertised there and here is a link:
https://ng.linkedin.com/jobs2/view/11028048

Also, while at my previous job, I also did some HR and looked for candidates on Linkedin to fill various roles but the one person I gave a trial for a freelance writing role was absolutely nothing she claimed to be. Her writing was horrible and all she did was steal articles off the internet and send to me.

That said, there are lots of recruiters searching on Linkedin for candidates. Make sure your profile is updated, be honest (very important) and most importantly, don't fold your hands waiting for recruiters to look for you; use the job search function. Most of the best workplaces out there advertise their latest roles on LinkedIn before sending such jobs to jobsearch websites.

Cheers
Jobs/VacanciesRe: "How Much Do We Pay You?" Interview Question by thekrine: 5:55pm On Oct 11, 2014
Hello,

I am not a supporter of the 'I know you have a structure of what you pay and I will accept whatever it is' type answer.

When a recruiter asks you what your salary expectation is, they really do need to know what you want to earn. I find it quite annoying when I ask potential employees this question and they start pretending like money does not matter. Most times I throw out a ridiculous figure as the salary 'package' on offer to see a gasp and their true reaction about money.

Money matters and it is from that same salary that you will transport yourself to work, feed and basically have a life. Thus, during your interview please do not act like you can 'manage' whatever they offer you. Your circumstance may not be same as the other individuals in the organisation. Your level of skills might be a game changer for the organisation and they may be willing to ignore their structure.

Have a figure in mind and mention that figure to them. If they cannot pay you that much, they will tell you so and if you are a very good candidate for the job, a negotiation will ensue.

I have been part of recruitment processes where budgeted sums for salary had to be increased slightly to accommodate the individual because of their own unique circumstance. It also matters that you let them know you are open to consider what they have to offer.

If you currently have a job, a good standpoint to negotiate from is to use what you currently earn. If you will be doing more at this new job and bringing in new expertise, use that as your reason for demanding more than what you earned at your last job. Perhaps you may have to also pay more in transportation.

For recent graduates, this is one a lot of us shy away from but I think I am right when I say the average salary on a first job in Nigeria is roughly N80k/month (and in most cases it is way lower than this). I am sure if we take a poll here very few people earned that much on their first job. Some organisations will start you off on a salary like this and increase after 6 months or so. Salaries in Nigeria are not great; that is the reality so do not blow your chances by saying "as a graduate I expect to earn nothing less than 150k"; I hear this a lot and it's normally an interview killer.

I recently interviewed someone for a role and her response to the salary offer was 'wow, that is poor'. She called a week later to say she had not heard back from us. Of cos I couldn't call back an individual that already seemed unhappy with the salary a potential employer can afford to pay.

Say what you want to earn and also ensure you inform the recruiter (and your disposition shows) that you are willing to consider what is on offer. Always give a figure.

genchukky:
The simple answer is,there is a particular salary structure for every department in a company,so when you are asked the question, tell your interviewer that the post you are seeking for has a payment structure the company offers and you will be ok accepting that plan............but make sure u have an idea of the salary structure before going for the interview..

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Fustration Of A Jobseeker by thekrine: 9:14am On Jul 25, 2014
Hello tosag,

Sorry about that. Hang in there and do more applications. You have an edge that you have some work experience. It is harder for applicants out there who have never had a job with little to nothing on their CVs.

Ensure you work on your CV, update it to capture all your work experiences and apply. Best of luck

tosag: @thekrine I love ur advice. Am in the same situation as the op, the only difference is that I've worked before. The company was liquidated by AMCON. No payoff, nothing. Inshort, as am typing am fed up with life. The only jobs in warri where I live are sales boys jobs. As it is now it only God dat can deliver me. Am almost frustrated.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Fustration Of A Jobseeker by thekrine: 9:04am On Jul 25, 2014
Hello Ezeed,

I was referring to applying to jobs that have been advertised. However, sending unsolicited applications is a good idea too. Ensure your application captures the type of job your are aiming at (I got my first job after NYSC this way in January 2010). I visited a website that had a list of accounting firms in Nigeria and sent applications to each one of the email addresses, separately. My application stated I was looking for an entry level audit role etc. I got 2 interviews from this and one job offer, both in Lagos. I'm no longer on that job but it was a good start.

A mistake some people make with unsolicited applications is that they simply send in a CV and nothing else (not even a subject on their email). Others send in a CV and indirectly say 'I don't have a choice, I will do any type of job you can give me'. Your application should always highlight your strengths and career interests. The HR within that organisation will measure your skills and place you in an appropriate role.

Ezeed: Goodmorning thekrine. Although you directed your counsel-- I would call it that-- to Eddyken, but I'd love to tell you thanks, cos it brought insight and calm to me too.

Pls I would love to ask you a question: when you talked about sending applications online, did you mean unsolicited and speculative applications (where you simply get the company's HR email and send ur application without been asked or send ur application to a company that tells you to make ur application even though thr's currently no vacancy). If so, how much do companies respond to such?

I'm planning on starting such online applications very soon, and I just want to know all there is to know about it. Thanks alot.

@Eddyken, pls just hold up and dont give up. As cliche as it sounds: winners never quit, and quitters never win.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Fustration Of A Jobseeker by thekrine: 6:37am On Jul 25, 2014
Hello Eddyken,

On your living condition...
Has your friend told you he can no longer accommodate you or are you just assuming? Squatting is uncomfortable for both you and your friend that owns the place and sometimes that discomfort is necessary to help you get on your feet. I don't think moving into a church is a good idea (not so sure how possible it is either). I suggest you remain with your friend, help around his house as much as you can (not saying you should turn to his slave but let him just not see you as an extra burden). He probably went through this phase as well and understands what you are going through. Most importantly even though you apply for jobs, applying for jobs should never be all you do everyday. Get involved in other activities, church, sports etc. Just make sure your daily activity is not job search, job search, job search. That must be frustrating.

On your job search...
Are you applying for jobs? There are a lot of jobs seekers out there who have gotten frustrated of it all and have equally stopped applying for jobs. There are jobs out there, albeit few but you will eventually get one of them. Majority of the employed folks out there passed through this phase you are in now, I did and so did most of my friends and family. I had this convo with my colleagues months back and frustration doesn't rightly capture how they (guys especially) described what they went through when without a job. Just do the following:
- Ensure you have access to the internet. I'm sure you know you need to have regular access to the internet for your job search
- Visiting Narialand jobs is always a great starting point
- Don't apply for every job you see as that will frustrate you more because you will not get called in for what you are not qualified. When I searched for a job, I came across at most 3 jobs a day that matched the type of job I was qualified for and some days I did not see a single one. Avoid sending your cv to everything, the lack of invitation for interviews or being shortlisted will frustrate you further. Be picky.
- When you apply, make sure your applications are put together excellently; good cv, good covering letter, if applying from a phone ensure the 'sent from my blackberry', signature etc has been cleared off. Be professional with it.

Whatever you do, ensure you are around or in touch with family/friends that care and can support you with little funds until you get a job.

Job search frustrates a lot of people but being without a job is just a phase.

I've not reviewed CVs in a while but I can give yours a go if you want. Send yours to me together with your covering letter as if you were applying for a job - thekrine@gmail.com and I'll look at it within 6hrs. I hope you get a job soon.

Best wishes

Jobs/VacanciesDo These 3 Things During Youth Service (NYSC) And Get A Job Faster by thekrine(op): 10:10am On Jul 14, 2014
Most Nigerian students spend their university years focusing on getting good grades without balancing this out with a taste of career planning and what having a job actually entails. Also, despite a few graduates being ‘lucky’ to have undertaken courses that required a couple of months ‘Industrial Training (IT)’ a lesser number of these lucky ones actually use this opening properly.

Here are 3 things to do during your NYSC service year and improve your chance of getting a job post-service:
1. Create a CV:
A very tiny percentage of Nigerian students work during their years at university and thus you will hardly come across a recent graduate – fresh out of university, still serving and in a lot of cases post-Youth Service, having a CV. A CV is your tool for job search and application. Create one during your Youth Service.

2. Apply for jobs:
Applying for jobs is not an easy task and MOST graduates out there remain unemployed because they are doing it wrong (very wrong). To apply for jobs, you need to have an idea of the type of job that is suitable for you, the skill you have or need to develop to be employed and also get a grip with writing a good application/covering letter to accompany your applications. Use your Youth Service year to get a grasps of all these and start to weigh the responses you receive. Ensure you learn about writing a covering letter, read on career paths and employability skills.

3. Attend Interview:
I know your first reaction here will be, ‘no one recruits Youth Corpers’. But in addition to reading articles online about interview preparation, you need to attend interviews to get some real life experience of what job interviews and tests entail. I went in for my first job interview while in 200level at university and even though I got the job, I recall my boss was kind enough to give me feedback on how I performed – I spoke too fast and was in a hurry with my responses. The feedback and experience on my performance at this interview helped me with preparations for interviews after I graduated. I have interviewed hundreds of job seekers, most of whom leave me with a disappointing impression of them; from turning in late for interviews to having no answer whatsoever for basic questions, it is shocking!

Your concern now might be ‘how do I get invited for interviews when I am just a Corper?’. Simple! Apply for entry level roles, roles you will apply for post-NYSC. I recently met a ‘smart Corper’ who omitted information on her CV that she was still in her service year. Here is how she did it: the most recent item on her CV was a job but she omitted information that she was on this job as a Corper and instead gave details of what she did at this job. Her activities at this job were a right fit of experiences for the job being recruited for and it was really impressive that even though she was just 3 months into her service year, she was already testing the job market. Don’t wait until you have completed Youth Service before applying for jobs and attending interviews.

Get out there and get some experience in preparing your CV, applying for jobs and attending interviews. It’s never too early but soon it will be too late!
