One thing I've learnt about music streaming is that the number of streams alone doesn't tell the full story.

Two independent artists can receive different royalty payments even when their songs have the same number of streams.

Here are 4 important reasons:

**1. Listener location:** Streaming revenue can vary across territories because subscription prices and market conditions differ.

**2. Subscription type:** Paid subscriptions and ad-supported listening may generate different revenue.

**3. Rights ownership:** The money an artist receives depends partly on who owns the master recording, publishing rights and any agreed royalty splits.

**4. Distribution terms:** Distributors and other rights holders may deduct fees or distribute revenue according to their agreements.

For example, my previously shared Apple Music payout of $400 from 50,000 streams works out to an effective payout of $0.008 per stream. That is the result of that particular payout, not a guaranteed rate for every artist or release.

**The real lesson:** Don't judge a music catalogue by stream count alone. Look at actual royalty statements, ownership agreements, expenses and the consistency of earnings over time.
