A Lagos Federal High Court, today, ordered the remand of Mr. Olajide Ahmed Kafidipe, an Assistant General Manager of Skyway Handling Company (SAHCO) and seven employees of the company, charged before the court, on drug related offences, at the Ikoyi Center of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS), till when they are able to meet the bail terms granted them.

Justice Deinde Dipeolu, remanded Olajide and others, after admitted them to bail, on charges of conspiracy, unlawful possession and transportation of 1,440.90 kilograms of Tramadol 225mg, a prohibited substance, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)

Others remanded at Ikoyi facility of the NCoS’ alongside Olajide were: Sanyaolu Rasheed Oladele; Musa Mutalib Opeyemi; Sanamo Alla Daniel; Anuge Evans Isibor; Mahmud Agboola Musa; Udeh Felix and Obinna Henry.

Justice Dipeolu, after listening to the submissions of the defendants’ lawyers and the prosecutor, Mr. Abu Ibrahim, on the bail applications, admitted bail to each of the defendants in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in like sum.

One of the sureties according to Justice Dipeolu, must be a Grade Level 12 and above in the federal government establishment, while the second surety must be a landed property owner with Certificate of Occupancy (CofO) and among others.

The judge also ordered that all the particulars of the sureties must be verified by the court’s Deputy Chief Registrar (DCR)

Consequently, the judge ordered the remand of all the defendants in the Ikoyi Center of the NCoS. While adjourned to January 25, for the commencement of trial.

The SAHCO’s Assistant General Manager, Olajide and others were arraigned before the court by the NDLEA on Tuesday, on offences bordering on conspiracy, unlawful possession and transportation of 1,440.90 kilograms of Tramadol 225mg, a prohibited substance.

The prosecutor, Mr. Abu Ibrahim, on Tuesday, while arraigning the defendants, told the court that they conspired with the trio of Mubarak Sarki Salami, Abdullahi Aliyu a.k.a Aboki and Anwal Monday, who are also staff of the company but now at large, to commit the offences on or about October 25, 2023.

The prosecutor further informed the court that the Assistant General Manager of SAHCO, Olajide and other staff of the company, conspired among themselves to transport the prohibited drug out of SAHCO Import Shed.

Abu further informed the court that the SAHCO’s Assistant General Manager, Olajide, conspired with Sanyaolu Rasheed Oladele, and engaged one Lawal Itunu Temitope, to transport the prohibited substance from SAHCO Import Shed in a Mercedes Benz Bus with Registration Number LAGOS MUS 269 YC, owned by Platinum Pacific International Limited.

He further informed the court that another staff of SAHCO, Sanyaolu Rasheed Oladele, unlawfully possessed the said 1, 440. 90 kilograms of Tramadol 225mg, a Narcotic Analgesic.

The prosecutor told the court that the offences committed by the defendants, contravened sections 14 (b), 21 (2)(d) and 20 (1)(c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. And punishable under sections 11 (b) and 20 (2)(b) of the same Act.

All the defendants denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dissolved the boards and managements of Titan Trust Bank, Union Bank, Keystone Bank and Polaris Bank.

The decision to dissolve the boards was taken after a meeting between the CBN Governor,  Yemi Cardoso and Jim Obazee, the special investigator on the activities of former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele and the board and management of the four banks.

The move is seen as the beginning of the implementation of the report of the Special Investigator on the CBN.

Investigation revealed that investors in Titan Trust Bank refused to honour the invitation to a meeting with the Special Investigator.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raided the Dangote office headquarters in Lagos today as part of their continuing investigation into 52 companies related to foreign exchange transactions.

The commission is investigating forex allocations to these companies during the tenure of Godwin Emefiele as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

We understand that the EFCC wrote to the various companies asking for documentation on their forex transactions in the last 10 years.

Some of the big companies being investigated are Dangote Group, BUA Group and Flour Mills - but they have all denied wrongdoing in their communications with the EFCC.

According to insiders, the Dangote Group said it is ready to explain every details of its forex transactions as it did not breach any laws.

Details of the EFCC investigations are still sketchy but it appears to be a blanket investigation into the biggest companies that got forex allocations from the CBN under Emefiele.

Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s spokesman confirmed the development.

Emefiele was suspended as CBN governor by President Bola Tinubu on June 9, 2023, and was subsequently arrested and detained for over five months.

He has been charged to court over various allegations which he denies.

When the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in December 2023, mandated the linkage of Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) and National Identification Numbers (NIN) across all tiers of accounts in Nigeria, this brought a wave of panic amongst customers who had run their accounts without BVN or NIN.
The apex bank in a circular, signed by the Director, Payment System Management Department at the CBN, Mr Chibuzo Efobi and Director, Financial Policy and Regulations Department, Mr Haruna Mustapha, to all commercial, merchant, non-interest and payment service banks, other financial institutions and mobile money operators, stated that all individual existing and new tier 1, 2 and 3 accounts/wallets must have BVN or NIN.
Mustapha noted that the mandate was part of the apex bank’s effort in promoting financial system stability which has led to its amendment of Section 1.5.3 of the Regulatory Framework for BVN Operations and Watch-List for the Nigerian Banking Industry (Guidelines).
The CBN’s circular also specified that existing unfunded individual Tier 1 accounts without BVN or NIN would be placed on “Post No Debit or Credit” immediately.
“For all existing Tier 1 accounts/wallets without BVN or NIN: Effective immediately, any unfunded account/wallet shall be placed on ‘Post No Debit or Credit’ until the new process is satisfied.
Effective March 1, 2024, all funded accounts or wallets shall be placed on ‘Post No Debit or Credit’ and no further transactions permitted. The BVN or NIN attached to and/or associated with all accounts/wallets must be electronically revalidated by January 31, 2024”, the circular read.
It further said that to ensure uniform and full compliance, the executive compliance officers, chief compliance officers or heads of the compliance functions are advised to acquaint themselves with the attached guidance notes which becomes applicable to all institutions regulated by the CBN.
Sources noted that the matter was being treated as a “national security issue”, adding that banks caught operating accounts without BVN or NIN after the expiration of the deadline “shall be severely dealt with”. Investigations further reveal that Nigerians have begun to besiege commercial banks and the National Identity Management offices as a result of the directive.
A look into the legal framework underpinning the policy indicates that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2007 established the NIMC and mandated the creation of a National Identity Database (NID) containing unique NINs assigned to Nigerian citizens and legal residents.
The Mandatory Use of the National Identification Number Regulation, 2017, further stipulates that NINs be used for various transactions, including employment, access to social intervention programs, and opening bank accounts whereas the CBN's policy builds upon this existing legal framework, aiming to enhance financial security and inclusion by mandating the inclusion of identity documentation across all segments of the banking system.
However, industry records reveal that NIMC has registered just over 100 million Nigerians whilst the latest data from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) as of October 9, 2023, revealed that there were 59 million (58,999,262) accounts with BVN. It is there expected that the regularisation of accounts without BVN or NIN can be achieved within the deadline given the progress that’s already been recorded on both fronts.
Looking deeper into this development, this policy provides a big boost in reducing identity theft, fraudulent activities and prevent unauthorised access to an individual’s account.

Battle against money laundering
At the Financial Action Task Force plenary held late October in Paris, France, Nigeria failed to scale a review of Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Risk conducted by the global financial intelligence agency.
The global agency faulted Nigeria’s anti-money laundering war, which had landed the country on the international grey list in February alongside South Africa, and 20 other countries.
Although the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit said it had been working to meet the FATF recommendations on money laundering and terrorism financing, it did not scale the review carried out by the FATF at its last plenary.
Countries on the FATF grey list have been identified as having strategic deficiencies in their anti-money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing regimes. According to KPMG, the implications for the greylisting of two of the biggest economies in Africa may be far-reaching.
Concerning Nigeria, KPMG said that “FATF noted that although Nigeria had made some progress since the adoption of its Mutual Evaluation Report in August 2021 it is required to implement FATF’s action plans. This FATF greylisting adds another layer of risk and complexity to businesses that already perceive Nigeria as a high-risk country for anti-corruption and other financial crime risks. This may put businesses with connections to Nigeria under more regulatory scrutiny, as regulators may expect them to implement more stringent AML/CFT compliance measures to mitigate the risks associated with greylisting.”
Also, the greylisting may result in higher compliance costs and increased due diligence requirements for businesses, making transactions with Nigerian counterparties more difficult. A key component of the anti-money laundering requirement of FATF is Know Your Customer (KYC), which helps financial institutions verify the identity of new and existing customers. Hence, this directive by the CBN is a tool to get Nigeria off the grey list and strengthen its battle against money laundering in Nigeria.

Enhancing financial inclusion and financial security
So far, Nigeria has brought more of its citizens into the financial system but remains far from its goal of getting 95 per cent of the population fully banked this year 2024. According to EFInA, a UK government-backed firm, the percentage of adult Nigerians with formal financial services- including bank accounts, insurance and mobile money- rose to 64 per cent in 2023 from 56 per cent recorded in 2020. But just about 52 per cent have a bank account and more comprehensive adoption is hampered by widespread poverty in the country. This directive offers a much broader sense of increasing the number of financially included people especially if it is very much strictly implemented. Once this is achieved, scammers who previously relied on stolen information to conduct fraudulent transactions will face a bigger challenge.

Boost economic growth and improve revenue generation.
Apart from prevention and financial inclusion, this directive is expected to unlock new markets, drive entrepreneurship, and boost the creation of jobs. Similarly, with an accurate identification technique, tax evasion by individuals and companies becomes significantly harder. This can lead to increased government revenue and improved public services, benefiting all Nigerians.

Conclusion
The truth is that very few policies go through successful implementation in Nigeria, the onus is now on the CBN to revolutionize the country’s financial sector through financial security, empowering Nigerians, and stimulating economic growth through its latest directive. Although January 31, 2024 looks like a long period, the CBN & NIMC should do everything humanly possible to adeptly navigate potential pitfalls, unlocking the brighter future promised by this ambitious initiative.

Yahaya Bello presents ambulances, fire fighting vans to LGAs, SUVs to judges, legislators

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has presented 25 ambulances to all the local government areas of the state and some tertiary institutions as well as fire fighting vans to the state’s Fire Service in Lokoja.

These were part of efforts to further aid the smooth functioning of the state’s health sector adjudged as one of the best in the country currently, in line with the State government’s prioritisation of the sector and to enable quicker handling of emergencies.

The Governor also presented 40 SUV cars and four Hilux vans to the state’s lawmakers and judges at a brief ceremony on Friday, in Lokoja, the state capital.

Governor Bello stressed that the autonomy granted to the legislature and Local Government was geared towards service delivery, noting that the Judiciary, Legislature and Local Governments had enjoyed their autonomy under his administration.

He said, “Today we can boost of a reference specialist hospital in Okene, that has been adjudged the best in Sub Saharan Africa. The Ambulances would help attend to emergencies within the shortest possible time towards an efficient health care delivery.

“We have made the health need of our people top priority under our administration, reason the 2024 budget is basically aimed at employment generation for health care providers and consolidation of the available infrastructure that has made us reference in north central Nigeria.

“It is also our avowed determination to ensure that our judicial officers are provided with the needed means to make them deliver justice without fear or favour,” he said.

“Over the years, we have witnessed some fire incidences that could have been averted but for want of the necessary equipment. It is our determination that henceforth, we will, with the provision of the fire service vehicles, fight fire incidences promptly and efficiently,” the Governor added.

Governor Bello assured the people of the State that his administration would continue to offer the necessary intervention that would improve the well-being of the people, assuring that his efforts would be witnessed till the last minutes of his administration.

In his remarks, the Speaker, Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Umar Aliyu, commended the unwavering commitment of Governor Yahaya Bello to delivering quality services to the people of the State.

“You have proven to be an advocate of the well-being and welfare of the legislators. The Assembly members have witnessed unprecedented support under your leadership in improving on our productivity,” he noted.

In his goodwill message, the Commissioner For Health in Kogi State, Dr. Usman Zakari, said, following a baseline and needs assessment carried out in 2018, the present administration of Governor Bello employed over 3000 health workers and improved on the infrastructure in all health institutions.

He described Governor Bello as a game changer in the state’s health Sector.

“You have procured ambulances for all the Local Government areas. This gesture has provided the opportunity to prevent maternal death and to be able to transport patients, for emergency, for linkages and referrals,” he stated.

...as NPA upscale operation with automation of processes

The Nigerian port infrastructure has undergone significant improvements in recent years, modernising projects, policy reforms and investments in human capital even as sustainability has laid a solid foundation for future growth.

Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mr. Mohammad Bello-Koko disclosed this on Thursday, in Lagos at the 2023 AMJON Conference and Awards, organized by the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria.

The NPA MD who was represented at the event by Mr. Charles Okaga, Port Manager, Lagos Port Complex Apapa, disclosed that while challenges remain, NPA is committed to continuous improvement in order to position Nigerian ports at a competitive edge in the global market.

According to him, continued collaboration between the NPA, government, private sector, and local communities will be crucial to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s maritime sector and drive economic prosperity.

Bello-Koko who lamented that operators in the port system are yet to be fully connected digitally, however said that NPA has upscale its operation through automation and digitalization of its processes.

The processes that have been automated include truck traffic management system e-call up, port ship reception and billing payment with the revenue invoicing and management system (RIMS), deployment of electronic manifest and ship entry notice documentation processes, operation of Oracle Financials and Oracle HR. Procurement of software for harbour automation is ongoing, the MD said.

He said automation facilities for integration; include Radar; Automatic Identification System (AIS); VHF Communication; Meteorological and Tidal Sensor, Surveillance Cameras and VTMS.

He lamented the challenges of carrying out speedy maintenance of port access roads due to the responsibility vested on the Federal Ministry of Works & Housing, with no direct responsibilities to the port.

Other challenges, he said include conflicting legislations with sister agencies, inadequate funding and need for further infrastructural development.

According to him the Port Authority has created new businesses which created job opportunities for Nigerians, such as the Barge Operations services which apart from reducing pressure on the roads has grown into a N2 billion annual generation business both from direct investment and accompanying externalities.

He disclosed that licensing of additional Truck Parks to increase capacity of Truck Parks servicing the Lagos Ports, has brought about significant reduction in truck turn-around time due to successful implementation of the e-call up system.

The Ports Authority is also enforcing minimum safety standards on trucks which stipulate that all trucks accessing the ports are inspected, certified and issued safety assurance clearance.

The MD also noted the establishment of Export Processing Terminals which are located in Lagos and Ogun states. The terminals, according to him, currently serve as Cargo consolidation points, Export documentation points, Quality control and Customs authentication and sealing.

Bello-Koko disclosed that the Ports Authority has put in place coordination of shipment of export cargo to ensure timely exportation, through equipment of terminals with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) with terminal operators and shipping companies.

There is also installation of weighbridges at EPTs to ensure compliance with IMO instrument of Verified Gross mass (VGM) of export cargo and issuance of accompanying weight certificate.

He said, “Since the EPTs, the port of Apapa and Tincan have witnessed an upsurge in export volumes and 65 per cent reduction in the number of accidents recorded, arising from improved standards of trucks operating within the port premises.

The NPA MD further disclosed that there is standardization of operational procedures for different activities such as barging, private jetties, pilotage, vessel berthing/sailing etc.

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Munirudeen Oyebamiji has urged the government to dredge the waterways serving the eastern ports to reduce congestion at the Apapa ports.

Oyebamiji who was represented by the NIWA's GM, Business Development, Surveyor Olumide Adetola made this recommendation at the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) 2023 conference and awards which held in Rockview Hotel Apapa.

"The government has to focus on dredging the waterways in east to enable businessmen directly berth goods at the eastern ports like Onne, amongst others," he said during the paper presentation.

He also clarified that NIWA, NIMASA and NPA were not in any conflict with one another regarding their duties. He said it had been made easier to function following the creation of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

Speaking during his paper presentation, he said the nation's waterways resources were grossly underutilized and underdeveloped. "In order to elicit efficient, prudent and profitable utilization of the waterways transport system, the Federal Government must transform waterway infrastructure facilities in line with shared vision and initiative towards modern competitive multi-modal water transport system with best practices and service consistence with current global standards, the NIWA boss said.

Adetola said the huge infrastructural deficit grossly affected the waterways transport system in Nigeria. He said the improvement in the institutional structure and features of waterways and its associated public utilities are essential to attain economic growth.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, who is the head of Nigerian Customs Service, the government’s lead agency on trade and fiscal policy matters will declare the event open and speak on The Future and Prospects of the Nigeria/Benin Customs Trans-border Trade Agreement.

A statement by the Secretary, AMJON 2023 Planning Committee, Oluwasegun Oladipupo, disclosed that the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is expected to use the opportunity of the event to educate stakeholders on the available port infrastructure to boost trans-border trade in Nigeria. The title of its paper is: Providing Functional Ports Infrastructure for Effective Trans-border Trade: The journey so Far.

Oladipupo said that the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) will make a presentation on the topic, Providing Adequate Maritime Security for International Trade in the Nigerian Waters.

“While the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) will speak on, Developing Nigerian Waterways Infrastructure for Effective Movement of Goods and Services, the Patron of AMJON, Chief Iju Tony Nwabunike will speak on The Role of Customs Brokers in Sustaining a Viable Trans-border Trade for National Economic growth.

On the preparation of AMJON for the event, President of the AMJON, Paul Ogbuokiri said on December 14th, 2023 all roads in Apapa will lead to the Rockview venue of the AMJON 2023 Conference and Awards. He called on industry stakeholders to make it a day with the biggest maritime media show of the year.

Speaking, Chairman of the planning committee, Innocent Orok said AMJON is holding this event at this critical moment of the national history to further inspire the heads of the government agencies in the sector to work in tandem with the performance bond they signed with the government.

According to him, for the Nigerian ailing economy to rebound, government agencies, stakeholders and the public must be properly sensitise to key into the vision of the Tinubu administration.

The 2023 Annual Conference and Awards of the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON), is set to take the maritime industry and other associated trades by storm as it promises to assemble the who is who in the industry on December 14th at the Rockview Hotel Apapa, Lagos; to brainstorm on the most viable options available to Nigeria to make its trans-border trade more profitable to the nation.

The AMJON 2023 Annual Conference seeks among others, to achieve the following objectives:

Identify the viability of opening up the Nigerian economy for more importation without making the country vulnerable to dumping, weakened national currency, job loss, closure of industries and other likely challenges. This is in view of the recent pact between the Nigeria Customs Service and Customs Administration of Benin Republic which allows for harmonisation of import policies and unification of cargo clearance procedures across borders.

Identify impediments to Trans-border trade like poor access roads; from Babana in Kwara State to Ilorin, Shaki in Oyo to Ibadan, Seme - Badagry in Lagos State, Igolo portion of Benin Republic leading to Nigeria, slow pace on the reconstruction (over two decades) of the Apapa, Onne, Calabar and Warri ports road with a view to encouraging the Federal and State governments to addressing these critical infrastructural deficits.

The conference also aims at drawing maximum attention towards maximising the potentials of the Blue Economy, AfCFTA and Exports among other international trade deals, which is widely acknowledged to be low hanging fruits for economic diversification from a mono-cultural economy to a more viable, sustainable and environmentally-friendly source of sustenance for Nigeria.

It also aims at engendering inter-agency and government/private sector collaborations to build capacity in the areas of indigenous investment, professional expertise and limitless opportunities for job creation, among other benefits.

Speaking about the 2023 conference, President of AMJON, Paul Ogbuokiri said that it has become a tradition for AMJON to set the pace for stimulating discussions on a yearly basis on strategic policies and programmes of government that will benefit the government and the people alike.

Ogbuokiri said the theme of this year’s event was carefully selected to key into President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda to boost business and generate revenue for the government, while creating employment for Nigerians.

NSSF launches WeNaija Youth Fest 2023: A celebration of advocacy, innovation, and empowerment

The Nigeria Solidarity Support Fund (NSSF) is set to launch her inaugural WeNaija Youth Fest event to close out its 2023 WeNaija campaign.

The annual WeNaija campaigns have been dedicated to reskilling and retooling creative Nigerian youth through innovative avenues like Photography, Literature, and Video to mobilize, empower, and upskill Nigeria’s vibrant, tech-savvy, and creative youth.

The 2023 WeNaija campaign united young people aged 18-35 in a national video content creation contest themed ‘WeNaija Awareness to Action’ which launched on October 11th, 2023.

The campaign was aimed at raising awareness about HPV and the HPV vaccine for girls aged 9-14 through video content. The videos created will be used as advocacy tools to encourage youth participation in advocating for essential healthcare improvements.

The WeNaija Youth Fest is the grand finale of the ‘Awareness to Action’ campaign. The festival will allow participants to showcase their impactful videos with the hope of being recognized and celebrated as the top 5 finalists to win amazing prizes worth up to 5 million naira and internship opportunities.

The event will also feature capacity-building sessions for young advocates in health, storytelling and video content creation, led by some of our esteemed WeNaija Video contest judges and influencers. Exciting opportunities to win prizes also await participants in the ‘Spontaneous’ competition.

The Kogi State APC Governorship Campaign Council has taken a swipe at the SDP, accusing the horse-symboled party of exposing its own atrocities against democracy.

The APC Campaign Council, in a press statement released on Tuesday, said it has noticed the desperation with which the SDP and some ethnic jingoists are trying to paint Kogi State as unsafe.

The statement signed by the spokesman for the Campaign Council, Kingsley Fanwo, alleged that the SDP orchestrated the supposed attacks on the Secretary of the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, Mr. Mike David, in other to cover up the already exposed plans of filing petitions through the backdoor.

Noting that the SDP is desperate to file petition against the November 11 election outside the period allowed under the Electoral Act, the APC recalled that some patriotic lawyers, from across the three senatorial districts of the state, had on Monday, alerted the public to the clandestine plan of the SDP and its Governorship candidate to file their petition through the backdoor and backdate same in order to circumvent the provisions of the Electoral Act.

“It is not hard for the discerning to see through the concocted lies and warped strategy of the SDP, as the purpoted attack on the Tribunal Secretary was said to have occurred on the day their dubious, anti-democratic plan was exposed”.

Raising some posers, Fanwo queried: “Why was he not attacked before the midnight of December 3, 2023, when the 21 days window closed? Why is the SDP the first to know about the purported attack? How did they know that he was working on their so called petition at the time he was allegedly attacked? Why has the SDP turned themselves to the advocate for the Secretary?”

He however alerted the public not to be misled because the people know exactly what is happening.

He therefore reiterated the call on security agencies to swing into action and look into the numerous petitions before them.

“We have called endlessly on the security agencies in the state to act on series of petitions before them against the criminalities being perpetrated by the SDP and its thugs all in the name of politics.

“They commit heinous crimes, kill innocent citizens, heighten tension in the state with hate speeches under a rejected ethnic agenda and turn around to play the victims through senseless propaganda.

“They even blatantly accuse the security agencies of committing crimes without any arrests being made.

“The inaction of the security agencies in the face of glaring atrocities being perpetrated by these desperate politicians and ethnic jingoists has further emboldened their thugs to attack the residence of the Resident Electoral Commissioner in charge of Kogi State, something that has never happened in the history of our dear state.

“And now, they and their collaborators in crime have conjured a “dead on arrival” script on the attack of the Tribunal Secretary.

“As we write, the lawyer, who led others to expose the SDP’s backdoor filing plans, in collaboration with some staff of the Tribunal, is being threatened by the SDP camp, even on public platforms, and this complaint is before the security agencies.

“When SDP threatens, they attack. That was how they threatened the Resident Electoral Commissioner and followed up their threats with a gruesome attack on his residence. Those who act within the precinct of the rule of law must be protected by the law.

“We await the reports of the security agencies on the true situation of things and once again call on our President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to direct the Department of State Services and the Police to leave no stone unturned in apprehending the criminals terrorising the state and waging fruitless war against democracy. The Governor of the state, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, CON, laid a solid foundation in terms of security. Criminals had no hiding place in the state for over seven years. We cannot at this point sacrifice these widely acknowledged wins on the slab of politics,” the statement concluded.

A total of 54 corps members emerged as beneficiaries on Thursday, at the FCT Permanent Orientation Camp, Kubwa, Ebony, Enugu, Benue and Rivers states where the competition took place simultaneously.

A total of N15,250,000 was given out to corps members with exceptional entrepreneurial ideas across the country. The overall winners were awarded N1million each while the first runner ups and second runner ups were rewarded with N700,000 and N400,000 respectively. Other Corp members who participated in the competition were also rewarded with consolation prizes ranging from N200,000 to N50,000.

Obasi Favour Onyinyechi emerged as the winner of the grand prize of N1,000,000 at the FCT Permanent Orientation Camp, Kubwa. Meanwhile, Awe Rebecca emerged as the first runner clinching the second prize of N700,000

Obasi who was visibly excited noted that with the grant her business dream was on its way to becoming a palpable reality, and she thanked Access Bank Plc for changing her life on the go via the initiative. She noted that the grant would expedite the growth process of her fish farming business by getting a good number of healthy fingerlings and feeds, and treatments for them.

The Accessprenuer empowerment scheme by Access Bank Plc has over the years empowered thousands of Nigeria corps members —- granting impetus and vitality to kickstart business dreams in the embryo and expand those that have already begun operations. Zenith Tech Fair concludes with Hackathon winners receiving significant cash rewards


The Third Edition of the Zenith Bank Tech Fair, themed “Future Forward 3.0”, which was held on November 23-24, 2023, at the Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos has concluded.

From the over 500 contestants that participated in the Zenith Hackathon (Zecathon), Sync, a team collaboration and workflow management platform that provides synergy, enables project management, task planning, messaging, payments, scheduling and people operations, emerged as the overall winner, taking home the grand prize of N20 million. This is in addition to a mentorship programme with Seedstars, a company dedicated to implementing high-quality capacity-building programmes for entrepreneurs in emerging markets.

The first runner-up, Skill Up With Kahdsole (SUWK), a social-tech startup that provides an end-to-end platform for learning technical and vocational skills to empower young people, won N15 million and a mentorship programme with Seedstars, while the second runner-up, Tribapay, a payment processing gateway that allows for cross-border payments and transactions in Nigeria and Ghana, won N10 million as well as a mentorship programme with Seedstars. Access Bank partners ASOLAR to power up Nigerian SMEs and rural communities with eco-friendly energy solutions


Access Bank Plc, in collaboration with Asolar, has launched a green energy solution to tackle power supply challenges faced by small and medium enterprises and rural communities across the country.
The products, which included solar-powered TV sets, Air Conditioners, and PoS machines, among many others, were launched on Tuesday at the Access Bank Branch in Garki, Abuja.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony tagged: ‘Light up your community’, the Access Bank Deputy Managing Director, Victor Etuokwu, said the inconsistent power supply has become a major obstacle to businesses and livelihoods in the country.
Represented by the bank’s Director of Regional services, Neka Adogu, Mr Etuokwu said the initiative was aimed at promoting financial inclusion in rural areas.

A Nigeria businessman, Chief Joseph Umezugha, has been remanded at the Ikoyi Center of the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCoS), by a Lagos Federal High Court, over alleged forgery, giving false information to the police and obtaining the sum of N185 million by false pretence.

The presiding judge, Justice Abimbola Awogboro, ordered the remand of the businessman, after he was arraigned on the alleged criminal act.

The judge remand him in custody till Friday, November 15, when his bail application will be entertained.

Arraigning the defendant, the private prosecutor, Mr. Ibunkunoluwa Olu-Jacobs, who has the Inspector-General of Police’s ‘fiat’, to prosecute the matter told the businessman committed the offences sometimes in November 2021.

Mr. Ibunkunoluwa precisely told the court that the defendant committee the offence on November 24, 2021, fraudulently obtained the sum of N185 million from some individuals.

He also told the court that the defendant also defamed some of the fraud victims and also gave false information to the police about them.

He told the court that the offences committed by the defendant contravened sections 125(a); 375 and 467 of the Criminal Code Act, Law of the Federation of Nigeria. And section 1(2) of Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act.

The defendant denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Following the defendant’s plea of not guilty, the prosecutor, Mr. Ibunkunoluwa, asked the court for a trial date, and urged the court to remand the defendant till the determination of the charge.

However, lawyer to the defendant, Professor D. O. Okafor, told the court that he had filed his client’s bail application and same has been served of the prosecutor. He urged the court to admit his client to bail in the most liberal terms.

Responding, the prosecutor told the court that he was being served with the application in court today, and that he needs time to filed his counter to the application.

Consequently, Justice Awogboro, in her ruling, adjourned the hearing of the bail application till Friday, November 15, while ordered that the businessman be remanded at the Ikoyi Center of the NCoS, till the hearing and determination of the bail application.

Worried by the high rate of banditry and kidnapping in the south-south, a community in Delta state has called on the people to rise up and defend themselves against what they called ‘enemy of the people’.

This call was made after several attacks were carried out that forced farmers to abandon their farms and thereby turning several communities to Internally Displaced People’s centres.

Just few months ago, suspected armed hoodlums attacked a family of four and carted away N280,000 and other items from their residence at Ogbe Iyasa Quarters, Ubulu-Okiti in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident, which occurred at about 8.55p.m. on September 7th, 2022, left the family, father, mother and two of their children, with matchet cuts on their heads and bodies.

According to sources, the generator being run by the family went off and the children, thinking that the fuel had been exhausted, went out to refill only to walk into the waiting hands of the hoodlums who led them back into their apartment.

It was gathered that the hoodlums, while inflicting bodily harm to their victims, forcefully collected their phones and ATM cards from which the sum of N280,000 was transferred to their Monie Point account.

The incident was reported at Ogwachi-Uku Divisional Police Station after she and her family were discharged from an undisclosed hospital where they spent 12 days, however police declined to comment after repeated enquiries.

In the same vein, in Egbo – Uhurie a village in Ughelli South Local Government Council experienced the worst of its insecurity in 2021 when one Felix Keghoro while his brother identified as John Otametite Keghoro is on the run.

The genesis of the crisis in the community according to sources was traced to a huge rubber plantation that has attracted all manner of hoodlums and rebel groups to take over the farms while many are still said to be at large for fear of their lives.

Similarly, no fewer than two people have been killed in an onslaught on indigenes and residents of Ubulu-Uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area of the State.

In an attempt to stop the heinous crime, in the community, unidentified assailants waylaid a member of the Ubulu-Uku vigilante group, killing him on the spot.

Trouble started when the assailants laid siege in the bush along Ubulu-Uku-Issele-Uku major road where men of the community vigilante mount vigilance. Police commissioner Abas Adewale confirmed the incident.

Just few weeks ago, Toru-Angiama community, Patani Local Government Area was thrown into confusion, as a father and his son were shot dead by suspected herdsmen.

It was gathered that one other person was inflicted with gunshot injuries as several others were said to have been held hostage by the herdsmen who invaded the community’s farmhands.

Sources said the incident which occurred at about 11 am caused pandamonium in the hitherto peaceful community as some panic-stricken residents fled the area.

Giving details of the incident, the Chairman of the Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, in Kabowei kingdom, Mr Andrew Ekiyor said the father, identified as Mr Egbejule and his son had gone to their farm when they met the herdsmen destroying their crops.

In all these the state government has yet declared a state of emergency on the insecurity, thus people now calling on their helpless youths to defend their community against armed men.

Gunmen said to have been dressed in military uniforms have attacked the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

According to available information, the attack took place at 4pm on Sunday (today) close to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

A statement on Sunday by the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, said the assassination attempt on Governor Bello took place a few kilometres away from Abuja.
He was said to be on his way to an official engagement in Abuja from Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

Fanwo said: “The attackers who were dressed in military uniforms waylaid the Governor’s convoy and started shooting sporadically at his vehicle and other vehicles in the convoy.

“It took the swift intervention of the security personnel attached to the Governor to foil the satanic plans of the unknown soldiers.

“The attacks were at three different points, the last barricade being around Kwali Federal Capital Territory at about 4.20pm.

“The report of these strange attacks has been properly documented at security offices in the state and at the national level for prompt and thorough investigations to avert future occurrences.

“We are not oblivious of the fact that certain elements are bent on painting Kogi unsafe ahead of the Governorship Poll slated for November 11, 2023.

“As an administration, we will spare nothing to ensure our citizens are not subjected to security threats by desperate politicians sponsoring violence and terrorism.

“We call on the citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements in the domain to relevant security agencies.

“It is the responsibility of the Government to ensure security and we want to assure you that the peace we have enjoyed as a state in the last eight years won’t be lost on the altar of violent politics.”

Kogi 2023: Smart Adeyemi exhibiting signs of severe depression, needs help, say Okun indigenes

The people of Kogi West have called on well meaning sons and daughters of the senatorial district to take a second look at the recent activities of Senator Smart Adeyemi, and realise that he desperately needs their help to overcome the fear of the unknown, which they said had allegedly made him to start exhibiting what they described as “severe signs of depression”.

The Kogi West leaders, in a statement in reaction to Adeyemi’s Channels TV interview on Wednesday, said his utterances were totally devoid of logic, especially as regards a state “where he has absolutely no followership.”

The statement, signed on behalf of over 4,000 Okun indigenes, across all wards, by the Coordinator, Kogi Collective Interest Group, Abdul-Ganiyu Yusuf, challenged Adeyemi, who represented Kogi West Senatorial District in the 9th Assembly, to go to his ward to demonstrate his popularity to Nigerians, insisting that he would be booed as a result of non-performance while in office.

Yusuf, a High Chief from Ife-Olukotun, Yagba East Local Government, blamed Governor Yahaya Bello for “dashing him (Adeyemi) a third term”, saying all Kogi West people were united in their determination not to allow the former Senator get the third term ticket but for the plea by the Governor on his behalf.

The indigenes called on Adeyemi’s family members “not to watch him grieve alone as he has started showing dangerous signs of depression.”

“How can a man in his right frame of mind begin to hop from one TV station to the other, desperately, to say unfounded things about a matter that is already before the Supreme Court? Both the High and Appeal Courts have crushed his case. And any one who was in court on the day of the Supreme Court hearing already knows this man is completely unserious.

“He has absolutely no base in his hometown or state. He is begging to appear on TV stations desperately as if his life depends on it. Unfortunately, those that he is trying to seek their help know that he drinks palm wine and breaks the keg like his colleagues in the media have described him.

“Serious politicians are on the field aligning with one political party or the other and doing meaningful things with their time. Even as a Senator, he was a complete failure. He is the only orphan in the mix now. So, one should understand his grief and pity him, sincerely, instead of getting angry with a confused, battered, expired politician who, in the process of seeking to save a drowning image, is inadvertently committing political suicide.

“Please tell Smart Adeyemi to go home and show Nigerians his supporters and stop making a fool of himself on TV. The politicians we have at the top in Nigeria, as well as our indefatigable judges cannot be swayed by unintelligent serial betrayers and blackmailers. They know them when they see them and they can decode the signs of severe depression,” they stated.

Fasipe speaks on being Students’ Union President at UK Varsity, begins youth empowerment


Jeremiah Abiola Fasipe, Nigerian, is the President, Students’ Union, Sheffield Hallam University, United Kingdom (UK).

Fasipe defeated five candidates with a total of 792 votes cast in his favour to be declared the winner of the contest.

With this landslide victory, the postgraduate student and Inspirational Individual Award winner, who is currently studying Public Relations and Crisis Management, became the 30th President, Students’ Union at the Sheffield Hallam University.

According to Fasipe, hardwork, resilience and determination saw him through victory, as he has always believed in himself and sees the victory as a dream comes true.

Fasipe, who sees his emergence as a step to greater accomplishments, said he is ready to use his position as the President of Students’ Union Government (SUG) to bring positive change to students, while promoting the image of Nigeria abroad.

The Oyo state-born says he is ready to foster the relationship between the Students’ Union and the University in order to improve students’ engagement, academic performance and experience.

He said, “I am so euphoric, this is the result of hardwork and determination. I have always dreamt of a day like this and I can’t thank God enough for making me witness this milestone.

“I want to seize this opportunity to improve students’ academic life in Sheffield Hallam University, making sure that students are well represented in every decision regarding their academic needs and uphold all the mandates upon which I am elected.”

Fasipe also uses the opportunity to encourage the students not to give up on their dreams, but aspire for greatness, saying that sometimes, the experience may not be enough, but our belief and determination should be our strength.

Dudu Emmanuel’s solo exhibition opening at Nomadic Art Gallery on 30th September is bound to evoke strong emotions judging by the multi-faceted approaches he has employed.

Proceeding under the theme “Enlightenment”, Dudu’s work will excite fans and visitors to the gallery thanks to the diversity of works presented by this multi-media Nigerian artist.

In a plethora of works conceived pre- and post-Covid, the artist skilfully presents the multi-faceted process of experiencing, being or becoming “Enlightened”.

They range from the inexplicable clarity triggered by the touch of an innocent child, to events dramatically exposing inequities and injustice, to encompass the wisdom accumulated in an old sage.

The vast - at times philosophical - interpretation of the all-encompassing word “Enlightened” will be front and centre at Dudu Emmanuel’s solo-exhibition. His playful works which frequently depict human traits or current events, can be found in private collections including that of the King of Morocco in Rabat.

“This particular body of works is very important to me” explains Dudu Emmanuel before adding that “it very much represents how I feel at this point of time in my life and “Enlightened” is the perfect term for it. It applies to how I feel as an artist, a Nigerian and a global citizen. As a contemporary artist, I believe firmly that I have an obligation to articulate, transfer and evoke sentiments related to environmental, political, social, or cultural issues that strike a chord with my audiences. It is my hope that this solo exhibition will achieve exactly that”.

Some of the works on display are vibrant paintings on canvas while others have been subjected to a creative process that Dudu Emmanuel’s refers to as transmutation – a term usually used in the sciences to explain the process of a specie evolving from one form to another.

The process includes the use of recycled wastepaper and cartons integrated in mixed-media compositions that take advantage of pre-printed branded designs, print or pigments.

The results are thought-provoking art works with environmental undertones which unambiguously highlight the urgency in resolving issues of consumption and waste while introducing alternative uses of packaging.

Dudu Emmanuel was born in 1974 in Benin City, Edo State. He holds a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from the University of Lagos and has more than 30 exhibitions to his name. His exhibition with Nomadic Art Gallery is his first post-covid solo exhibition.

The Nomadic Art Gallery has since 2016 been on a mission to provide African art and artists on the continent and in diaspora a strong voice and visibility in Africa and beyond, pioneering what NAG refers to as “the Afrobeat of Contemporary Art”.

BoConcept, the international furniture company, is joining forces this month with Nomadic Art Gallery to present an exhibition titled “Art meets Design”.

The exhibition will run from 16th September to 7th October 2023 (Monday through Saturday) at 37a Adetokunbo Ademola crescent, Wuse 2, FCT Abuja and

will feature works by contemporary Nigerian artists – Oluwaferanmi Okeowo, Joe Abdallah, Anny Robert and Jessicah Yakno-Abasi Ene.

The innovative “Art meets Design” concept was conceived by Charlotte Obidairo of BoConcept when the Danish furniture company first entered the Nigerian market in 2014. “Some customers were expressing concerns about how the contemporary furniture might work with African art in their homes. They were having difficulties in visualizing the mixing of the genres. I decided to provide the forum for addressing exactly that during month long exhibitions with local artists dubbed “Art meets Design” explains Charlotte Obidairo. The now tried and tested concept is rolled out across BoConcept stores in Africa.

This month’s exhibition in Abuja is brought to life in collaboration with Nomadic Art Gallery – a Lagos based gallery representing contemporary African artists across the continent. For Gallery Director, Mercy Imiegha it is a match made in heaven. “Art and design go hand in hand. Some say good design is largely about skills while good art is largely about talent, which is partly true,” she says and continuing adds “But both good design and good art are about making an impression and getting a reaction. That is what we are hoping to achieve with the Art meets Design Abuja edition”.

The exhibition in Abuja showcases art works in spaces simulating a home setting. The art is intentionally curated to accentuate the design and functionality of the modern urban furniture and vice-versa. All items – furniture and art – on display are for sale.
