Former FIFA President, Sepp Blatter, has allegedly accused UEFA of rigging tournament draws. The 80-year-old has been quoted by a Swiss newspaper as saying that certain balls denoting the teams in the draw were either “warmed” or “cooled” so they could be distinguished from others in the pot. Blatter declined to identify which specific teams or tournaments were affected, confirming only that it was a European club competition. “I saw it with my own eyes and it was like cheating,” he told Blick. “It was for a European competition. Only one team has managed that. It was an Italian side. You can see the balls that are drawn identified either by making them hot, or if they have been cooled. I was a witness.” Blatter stepped down from his post at the height of the corruption scandal that has engulfed FIFA for the last 18 months, but maintains that he has never been involved in illegal activity.

The management of the African Independent Television (AIT) Tuesday sacked all the workers at its Benin City station, for allegedly demanding for their unpaid 16 months salary arrears. In a letter dated 2-6-16 and signed by one Mr. Victor Okasoga, a Senior Manager in charge of Human Resources, the management said the appointments of the affected workers have been terminated with effect from June 13, 2016. The letter directed those affected to handover all company properties in “your possession especially your identity cards to the Head of Center,” adding, “failure to surrender company properties in your possession may delay the processing of your entitlements.” It would be recalled that the affected workers, including reporters, cameramen, presenters and producers, had three weeks ago protested the non payment of their salaries. The Benin Centre of the Station has been off air for several days now. AIT was founded by High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi who is being tried by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for money laundering.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to immediately pay entitlements due to late former Super Eagles’ coaches, Stephen Keshi and Amodu Shuaibu. The house mandated its Committee on Sports to liaise with the NFF to ensure that the payments were made without delay. This was sequel to a motion under “matters of urgent public importance” sponsored by Rep. Sam Onuigbo (PDP-Abia), which was unanimously adopted. Presenting the motion, Onuigbo said that payment of the entitlements would serve as a conscious effort toward cushioning any pains and financial pressures on the families of the deceased. Onuigbo expressed worry that Shuaibu was being owed arrears of salaries running into many months. According to him, Shuaibu was equally being owed by Edo State Government, having worked as the Director of the State Youth Football Development Agency, a position from which he resigned last year. The lawmaker, who said that the two coaches served the country meritoriously, pointed out that their deaths were huge losses to Nigeria. “These iconic Nigerians exercised leadership in football administration and impacted positively on the nation and the world in ways that their outstanding accomplishments brought happiness to Nigerians. “Even in the periods of economic and political adversities, they died at a time like this when football as a sport enjoyed by Nigerians is taking a nose dive. “Now, their demise is not only a huge loss to Nigeria and their families but to the international community as well, and we can understand the pains both families and Nigerians are currently going through. “Nigerians and the international community as a whole have lost the experiences of these patriots and heroes of football, whose services have been lost forever.” Onuigbo further urged the Federal Government to immortalise the football icons who served the country selflessly so as to encourage younger ones to always give their best for the development of the country. The two former national football coaches died within a space of four days. Keshi, 54, died on Wednesday, while Shuaibu, 58, died on Saturday.

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has admitted that the All Progressives Congress, APC, led Federal Government has being playing “blame game” since it took over the country’s mantle of leadership but it’s high time it stopped. Speaking yesterday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the former Governor said if the “blame game” is not stopped now, it would continue for the next four years. Amaechi said, “It’s time to move forward. If we start the blame game, we would do it for four years and we wouldn’t have done anything and people don’t care about the blame game anymore. “The reason why you voted for us is the reason why you are blaming the other people. Having voted for us, it means you heard us when we were campaigning that these people have failed and failed us. “In fact, I was very excited when your governor made his speech; I said this is a new convert. Now I can hear your governor say a similar thing. He’s using a different word. He is saying we want development. “If we don’t give you development, next time, don’t vote for us. What development do we want to give you from my ministry? One of my offence in the south-south was that there we have no roads; this east west road was not constructed. “When Orubebe attacked me here in Akwa Ibom, I replied by showing them the photograph of east west road and I showed them the flyovers I constructed across east west road anywhere the rivers flow I put a flyover across and I said facts speak for them and the President called me and said Amaechi stop stop stop.” |
