PoliticsFresh Plot To Impeach Saraki, Ekweremadu Thickens by thepoint(op): 2:18pm On Mar 29, 2017
http://www.thepointng.com/fresh-plot-to-impeach-saraki-ekweremadu-thickens/
There are strong indications that the Presidency may covertly be planning to finally pull the rug off the feet of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, over what has been seen as an affront in the rejection of nominees for certain offices, generally regarded as President Mohammadu Buhari’s personal nominees.

Twice within three months, a nominee of the Presidency for the chairmanship of the anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, was denied confirmation by the Senate, which premised its decision on security reports from the office of the Directorate of the State Security Services, which said that Magu was not suitable to hold any public office.

The head of the anti-graft agency had successfully prosecuted many sleazy politicians and other financial crimes offenders.

The Senate has been accused of using what has come to be described as Rugby–style tactic to deal with another favourite of the President, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Hammed Ali, a retired Colonel, over non-wearing of Customs’ uniform before the Senate. Recall that Ali was shoved out by the Senate penultimate week for not wearing the uniform that depicts his position as a Comptroller-General of Customs.

CrimeKids Take Over Sex Trade by thepoint(op): 12:52pm On Mar 16, 2017
http://www.thepointng.com/kids-take-over-sex-trade/

Prostitution in Lagos has lately gone bizarre with the initiation of kids between the ages of 12 and 15 into the illicit trade. ADELEKE ADESANYA, who went round some Lagos brothels, reports…

That prostitution is rampant in Lagos State may not be new to many people. The sad twist to this ignoble trade is the open involvement of kids, whose ages range between 12 and 14 years, in the world’s ‘oldest profession.’

According to findings by The Point, these young girls, who should be in school, have been initiated into the sex cult by a cartel of older prostitutes. The older women usually deceive illiterate parents back in some remote villages that they want to help take the children to Lagos to learn various trades or further their education.

Upon arriving Lagos, however, the girls find themselves as co-workers with elderly prostitutes inside small or moderate rooms in Lagos brothels. They thus become the source of income to the ageing prostitutes, who, for age factors and other sundry reasons, might have been experiencing low ‘patronage’.

Investigations conducted by our correspondent in some selected hotels and brothels in Lagos and its suburbs, revealed that most of these girls were either brought by their hosts from villages or picked up at motor parks for the sex-hawking business. In some cases, some of the girls were lured into the business either by relatives or friends.

BUSINESS AT IPODO BROTHEL

An area famed for the activities of teenage prostitutes is Ipodo, a boisterous community in Ikeja, Lagos. An uncompleted storey building and alow-profile bungalow both serve as shelter for prostitutes in the area.

A 14-year-old sex hawker, who called herself T Baby, screamed when she saw our correspondent: “Bros e, I no sweet as you dey look me so? You too be shine shine bobo; or abi you bi shakiti bobo?”

Sharing her experience with our correspondent, T Baby said she was introduced into the trade by an Aunt, who asked her mother in the village to release her to go to Lagos and make ends meet.

“Before now, many of us in the village used to think she was into buying and selling business,” she said. Investigations revealed that both the young and old prostitutes at Ipodo report to a woman, a veteran prostitute in her 50s, who they call ‘Big Mama.’

One of the kid prostitutes, who refused to disclose her name because of the fear of victimisation, said they previously paid the sum of N200 to their host, until recently when the price was inflated to N300 per day, adding that the fee “is between N700 and N1000, per ‘service.’”

A 15-year-old prostitute, who simply identified herself as Hannah, said the cost of room service recently increased from N700 to N1,000 “because of the rise in the value of the dollar.”

“I cannot ‘service you’ for less than N1000 because the prices of our materials have increased. You know dollar is expensive now.”

Responding to why she is into the business, however, Hannah told our correspondent that she joined the league of prostitutes at Ipodo to make ends meet, noting that her parents didn’t care about her and siblings.

Between 9pm and 11pm every day, some Lagos housewives stream to the adjoining streets around the notorious Ojuelegba in Lagos. While some of them stand in small groups as if waiting to be picked up for a crucial assignment at a nearby hospital, others simply stand in pairs, flagging down passing cars or simply fiddling with their iphones, which they handle like babies. Appearing in apparels that have no regard for incognito operations that should have been the rule of engagement for their class in such a seedy trade, they are poised for the real business of the night, expecting a big rake-off.
A week-long monitoring of activities at the notorious red light district of Ojuelegba by The Point was quite revealing.
Up on the roadsides, the housewives, most of who wear red lipstick, clutch handbags containing the ‘tools’ of their illicit trade - tissue papers and protective rubber - with their skimpy dresses giving them away as professional street walkers.
The headlight of the stream of cars ferrying potential patrons into some of the upscale drinking joints in the ever-chaotic community, intermittently splash the rays of light on the women’s scantily dressed bodies, revealing their curves and bumps as well as giving potential clients lurking in the dark corners better view of the ‘fishes.’

CrimeWoman Assaults 10-year-old Girl With Knife, Blade Over N20 Theft by thepoint(op): 7:30pm On Mar 14, 2017
Hell was let loose in Egbeda area of Lagos on Tuesday when a nursing mother, simply identified as Iya Keji, assaulted her husband’s niece, Bose with knife and blade over an alleged N20 theft.

The incident, which has now made the victim’s residence, House 10, Tayo Kehinde Street off Kareem Laka Street, Egbeda, a Mecca of sort, with people thronging to catch a glimpse of the poor girl, followed Bose’s alleged theft of N20 belonging to her aunt, Iya Keji, on Monday night.

According to sources, Iya Keji, who is now at large over the crime, had woken up since 5am and begun beating the girl.

A neighbour, Opeoluwa Kazeem, who spoke with our correspondent on the matter, said that the serious injuries sustained by the young girl from the blade and knife the woman used to ‘discipline’ her, made neighbours to report the case at Afoka Police station in Egbeda.

“Iya Keji is not a human being. I cannot imagine that it is just because of the N20 the girl stole that made her to almost kill her. The woman had been beating this girl for hours in their room, and people were wondering what was happening, not until this morning when the girl came out and exposed her,” Kazeem said.

Another resident on Tayo Kehinde Street, Tosin Babalola, told our correspondent that Iya Keji had also made an attempt to escape with the young girl when she realised the gravity of the crime she had committed.

Babalola said, “She took the girl and lied to her neighbours that she was going to a clinic with her. But neighbours forcefully took the girl from her before she absconded.”

It was also gathered that the suspect had, for some time, denied Bose education as she was withdrawn from school and made to hawk shoes.

Meanwhile, police operatives from Afoka police division are currently on the trail of the suspect who is currently at large.

The Lagos state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole confirmed the incident.

He said that police had begun investigation into the case. “Our men are currently investigating the case and the victim is in the hospital receiving treatment.”

PoliticsOgun Gov, Fayemi Mourn Late Gen Adebayo by thepoint(op): 5:32pm On Mar 08, 2017
http://www.thepointng.com/ogun-gov-fayemi-mourn-late-gen-adebayo/
Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, have commiserated with the Adebayo family, the people of Ekiti State, the Yoruba race and Nigerians over the death of the former governor of the defunct western region, General Adeyinka Adebayo (rtd) at the age of 89.
Governor Amosun, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant (Media), Adejuwon Soyinka, described the death of General Adebayo as a “great loss to the nation,” adding, “Although he died at a ripe old age, General Adebayo’s experience and fatherly advice will be sorely missed.”
Amosun added that the late General Adebayo would be fondly remembered for his unifying roles and effort across Nigeria and particularly in the Southwest geo-political zone.
“He was a rallying point and one of the voices of reason in the Yoruba nation and indeed across the length and breadth of Nigeria,” he said.
Fayemi, in a separate condolence message made available to The Point by his Special Assistant on Media, Olayinka Oyebode, described the late Adebayo as “a devoted father, leader and administrator with uncommon love and commitment for the progress of his people.”
The minister recalled that Adebayo, who was military governor of the old western region between 1966 and 1971, also served as president of the Yoruba Council of Elders.
Fayemi, a former governor of Ekiti State, said that the death of the foremost Yoruba leader has robbed the Yoruba race and indeed the country of a true patriot and a great leader.
The minister also described the late General Adebayo as a distinguished and highly refined leader and elder statesman, who lived his entire active life and retirement working for the unity and progress of the country.
“Baba was fervent in his zeal for the unity and progress of the country. His love for his fellow citizens and his fatherland was legendary. He was a man of great intellect and great taste, who attained greatness by dint of hard work and dedication,” he said.
Fayemi further recalled his numerous encounters with the late YCE leader while growing up as a young man, and while serving as governor of Ekiti State, describing the deceased as a man of substance with a generous spirit.
“General Adebayo was indeed blessed by God. Papa was a man of distinction, a man of honour and a courageous leader. He was a loving and devoted father, not only to his biological children. He was a father to all who came in contact with him. We shall greatly miss his wise counsel, which he gave effortlessly.
“There is no doubt, Baba’s death has robbed the Yoruba race, indeed Nigeria, of a distinguished citizen, patriot and leader. We shall surely miss his wise counsel and generous spirit at this critical stage of our national life,” he said.
The minister urged the children of the late elder statesman to be consoled by the fact he lived a good life, touched many lives and left a good name and legacy of service, adding, “His was a life well spent. We are not mourning Baba’s passage, rather we are celebrating his call unto glory.”

SportsAfrica Wants 10 Places At Expanded 2026 World Cup Finals by thepoint(op): 6:30pm On Feb 22, 2017
http://www.thepointng.com/africa-wants-10-places-at-expanded-2026-world-cup-finals/

Africa will be looking to double the number of places it has at an expanded World Cup from 2026. Forty-eight teams will be contesting for honours in the proposed World Cup finals.
The continent's football association presidents have told football's world governing body FIFA that they want at least 10 spots in the 48-team World Cup.
"All associations back the idea to expand the World Cup and there is the hope that Africa can have 10 places in future," South African FA chief Danny Jordaan said on Wednesday.
That would be double the five places the continent has at the next two finals in Russia next year and Qatar in 2022.
Europe is seeking a minimum of 16 places, up from 13, and wants its sides to be separated in the 16 opening round groups of three teams, with the top two advancing to a 32-team knockout phase under plans approved by FIFA last month.
Asia are expected to get eight to nine places, compared to 4-1/2 now, and South America, which has 10 member countries, a total of six, also up from 4-1/2.
The Concacaf region, made up of the Caribbean, Central and North American countries, would get 6-1/2 places, compared to 3-1/2, with Oceania, the small Pacific Islands confederation, having one automatic place at the finals instead of 1/2.
Inter-continental playoffs between countries with 1/2 a place would determine the additional spots at the finals.

No fewer than 1,126 local government education authority pensioners have lost their lives over a two-year period in Kwara State while waiting for the payment of their pensions.

The pension arrears have now accumulated to over N50billion, according to a statement by Alhaji Isiaka Akanbi and Alhaji Saidu Oladimeji, the association’s chairman and secretary respectively.

The pensioners say the non-payment has been due to the “deliberate negligence” of government to their plight, against the assurances by the state governor.

A top union source, who craved anonymity, disclosed that not less than 1,126 pensioners have lost their lives between January 2015 and February, 2017 following the refusal of the state government to pay their pensions, which prevented the many of the deceased from accessing quality healthcare.

He would’ve been better as a cleric – Shettima
His govt has failed Nigeria – Balarabe Musa
Following what they described as their disappointment with the present administration, and the controversies that have continued to trail the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari, some concerned stakeholders and leaders in the Northern part of the country have given up on the ability of the President to turn things around in Nigeria.

While some of the northern leaders, who spoke in separate interviews with The Point, are canvassing that the acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, should take over the mantle of leadership as substantive President, others want Buhari to continue, but not beyond 2019.

The Point’s findings revealed that most of the Northern leaders, who were Buhari’s backbone on his way to power, had, however, regretted their support, especially against the backdrop of the claims that his administration had allegedly been hijacked due to his old age and failing health.

The Northern leaders, who seem to be entertaining fears over the health status of the President, in separate interviews with The Point, advised that Buhari, having tried his best, should forget about coming back in 2019, “if God gives him the grace to finish the current tenure.”

BusinessFuel Scarcity: Sokoto Establishes Task Force On Petroleum Products' Distribution by thepoint(op): 3:45pm On Jan 24, 2017
Amid the worsening fuel scarcity in Sokoto, the state government has established a taskforce to monitor the distribution of petroleum products in the state.
A statement issued on Tuesday in Sokoto by Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal's spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, said that the task force would monitor and ensure effective dispensing of petroleum products by all selling outlets in all parts of Sokoto.
It said that the aim of such a task force was to return the distribution of petroleum products in the state to normal since no part of the country is presently experiencing disruption in the supply chain of the product.
The statement added that the members of the taskforce drawn from the public and private sectors would liaise with the Department of Petroleum Resources to track the movement of petroleum products meant for Sokoto State from loading points to final destinations.
"The task force will also liaise with relevant agencies to ensure full compliance with regulations governing distribution, marketing and sale of petroleum products in Sokoto State.
"The task force should also take any other action deemed necessary towards ensuring effective distribution and sale of petroleum products in the state," it added.
While Alhaji Magaji Magaji Gusau will serve as the Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Abubakar of the state Civil Service Commission (CSC) has been appointed as the secretary.

Other members are the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Commerce, Alhaji Haruna Maishanu; a member of the Sultanate Council, Alhaji Malami Maccido; Barrister Muhammad Muhammad of the state Ministry of Justice and Sokoto NLC  Chairman, Comrade Aminu Umar Ahmed.

Others are the Chairman of the Sokoto branch of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Secretary of the state chapter of the National Union of Roads Transport Workers, Alhaji Rufai Mode Danlikita and Squadron Leader Aminu Bala.

While urging the members to be diligent in their assignment, the statement said all efforts would be explored to ensure availability of petroleum products in the state.

Tambuwal had, at the weekend, threatened to revoke the Certificate of Occupancy of any filling station found hoarding petroleum products in Sokoto.

I’m too young to endure it, I want divorce – Wife

A housewife, Sherifat Asimiyu, has approached an Ibadan Customary Court, sitting in Agodi, to dissolve her 10-year-old marriage to Mr. Saheed Asimiyu for allegedly starving her of sex.

Saheed, who confirmed his wife’s allegations against him, told the court that his decision was a deliberate action aimed at punishing his wife for her disobedience to him. Sherifat said that apart from denying her sex, her husband was also in the habit of beating and biting her whenever they had disagreements. The complainant said she could no longer cope without having sex, stressing that her husband had not slept with her in the last six months.
She told the court, “There is no doubt about his ability to provide food, money and other material things for me and the two children of the union, but I am not satisfied with all these without sex.

“He abandoned me deliberately, I cannot take it anymore, because I am still young and I see no reason for his action. “To make the matter worse, he’s in the habit of beating and biting me whenever we have misunderstanding over minor issues.” Saheed, who is a motor spare parts dealer, admitted that he had starved his wife of sex, as he decided to go on a “sex strike” in the last one month to punish the woman for exhibiting bad characters.

According to him, his action was to punish the complainant and make her turn a new leaf.
The husband told the court that he had warned her several times to stop associating with bad friends, who usually misled her, but she had ignored him. Saheed also told the court that he would not prevent his wife from getting the divorce she asked for. “If that is what will make her satisfied, it is okay by me,” he said.
