BusinessVenezuela’s Inflation Hits 1 Million% As Bolivar Exchanges 119,900 To 1$ by THEWRITERSMIND(op): 8:11am On Jul 29, 2018
Venezuelans need 100,000 bolivar to buy a stick of cigarette and one billion to buy a pair of reading glasses and 119,900 Venezuela’s bolivar to exchange for one United States dollar.

The economy of Venezuela, an oil exporter like Nigeria, has gone fully bonkers. Inflation projected to hit 14,000 percent this year, has been reset by the International Monetary Fund to a mind-boggling one million percent.

Prices and inflation are rising so fast that the highest denomination bank notes minted in 2016 are already practically worthless. The biggest of those, 100,000 bolivars, would have bought five kilograms (11 pounds) of rice in 2017, now it’s barely enough for a single cigarette.

“If inflation continues at 100 percent a month,” the new 500 bolivar note, which will be the largest following the currency redenomination on August 20, “will be obsolete by December,” said economist Leonardo Vera.

Currently, a pair of reading glasses can cost one billion bolivars (about $300 on the black market). It would require 10,000 of the country’s largest bank note to pay for those in cash.

Some shops had resorted to weighing bank notes to determine their value rather than arduously counting them out.

Unsurprisingly, cash has practically vanished and electronic transfers reign.

Currently, a pair of reading glasses can cost one billion bolivars (about $300 on the black market). It would require 10,000 of the country’s largest bank note to pay for those in cash.

But few people could afford to buy those glasses anyway given they cost 200 times the minimum wage of five million bolivars a month.

As the country grapples with a financial and humanitarian crisis, shortages of food and medicines, and failing public services such as water, electricity and transport, President Nicolas Maduro is planning to zapping five zeros off Venezuela’s almost worthless currency. In March he had announced that he would strike three zeros off the bolivar bank notes, before upping that to five.

The question is how will this latest drastic move help drag Venezuela into recovery?

Henkel Garcia of economics consultancy Econometrica said the latest move of redenominating the bolivar is merely a “partial acknowledgement” of the hyperinflation crisis but “needs to be accompanied by economic reform in order to stop it,” said .

Venezuela has already been down this road, 10 years ago when Maduro’s predecessor Hugo Chavez tried the same trick by deleting three zeros.

“The redenomination in 2008 was a failure because we still ended up with hyperinflation,” said Asdrubal Oliveros, an economist with Ecoanalitica, another economics consultancy.

“The redenomination was made without accompanying policies to combat inflation so it didn’t tackle the causes.”

In the short term the move was a “transactional success,” said Garcia, but by “not containing inflation, that was completely lost.”

The government blames inflation on the opposition and the United States but, in reality, financing of the fiscal hole caused the monetary base to increase 250 fold in two years.

Industry and production minister Tareck El Aissami said the redenomination aims to “improve the spending power of the working classes.”

One tangible advantage, though, will be to ease the pressure on technology systems that are at breaking point due to transactions that run into billions of bolivars.

Many supermarkets, for example, have to divide sales into more than one transaction as their systems are limited to figures of 20 million.

“The monetary redenomination is to prevent the collapse of businesses’ financial systems: every transaction costs hundreds of millions or billions,” said Vera.

Practically the only product untouched by the inflation in this oil-rich country is petrol, which is why it is the cheapest in the world. A single dollar at its black market value could buy 3.3 million litres of petrol. Absurdly, once the redenomination is complete, a half bolivar — currently 50,000 bolivars, or less than two cents on the black market — would buy 50,000 litres.

Banking is affected too, with a source telling AFP that “there’s a real possibility of collapse.”

Such a distortion makes it likely the government will be forced to adjust the price of fuel and other heavily-subsidized goods and services.

What could complicate matters, though, is if the government decides to run the old and new currencies concurrently, affecting small payments.

Currently it costs 50 bolivars to fill the tank of a small car. That transaction under the new currency would cost a half centimo — but the bolivar subunit centimo was long made obsolete by inflation.

Maduro has shown limited signs of applying measures to confront the crisis, suggesting he might ease controls on currency exchange, currently monopolized by the government.

Imports of raw materials and machinery will be exempt from tariffs to try to encourage production in the country.

But these measures will only work “if there is economic stability that attracts investment,” said economist Luis Vicente Leon.

CareerSalary Increase: Labor Praises Head Of Service's Support For Civil Servants by THEWRITERSMIND(op): 5:59am On May 28, 2018
Organized Labor has commended the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOS), Ms Winifred Oyo-Ita, for keying into the demand of unions for salary increase in the core civil service.

The commendation came on the heels of a statement credited to the HOS at a workshop on the 2017-2020 Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP), in Abuja.

The HOS recently said that the emoluments of 80,000 civil servants who were the engine room of government should be increased since, currently, they are the least paid in the public service.

The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), in a press statement jointly signed by the national president, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama, and the secretary-general, Comrade Alade Bashir Lawal, recalled that, in 2015, the union presented a memorandum to the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) and demanded for an upward salary review for core civil servants, since they are the least paid in the public service.

“Our demand was predicated on the fact that the current pay structure in operation in the civil service has become unrealistic and inadequate such that workers can no longer meet their basic needs, a scenario that is impacting negatively on their morale.

“Besides, out of more than 12 different salary structures in the public service, that of the core civil service is the lowest even though the bulk of government work is carried out by civil servants,” the union said.

The ASCSN expressed the hope that the statement of the HOS would galvanised the government to do the needful by beefing up the salaries of civil servants to be at par with that of other segments of the public service.

“There must be equal pay for job of equal value more so because the employees concerned have similar or the same qualifications,” the union emphasised.

According to the ASCSN, the last salary adjustment in the civil service was done in 2010 and, since then, no salary increase has been granted to civil servants even though the cost of living has continued to rise because of spiral inflation.

It urged government to see the wake-up call of the HOS as an opportunity to right the wrong done to civil servants in the past decades by paying them remunerations that are obtainable in other segments of the public service.

The union urged government to enter into negotiation with trade unions in the civil service immediately in respect of their demand for salary increase.

PoliticsElectricity Consumers Accuse Discos Of Double Standards by THEWRITERSMIND(op): 2:34am On May 03, 2018
Electricity consumers are accusing distribution companies (DIsCos) of short-changing them by not providing them meters.

According to them, firms such as Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), Ikeja Electric (IK), Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and others have refused to provide them meters, despite consistent demands.

A customer, Mrs Florence Omotosho, said she suffered pains in the hands of EKEDC officials.

According to her, the firm asked her to pay N50,000 before it can provide her pre-paid meters, adding that the company frequent her Ebute-Metta residence to collect bills at the end of the month, and in the process disconnect her light.

‘’Failure of Eko DisCo to provide pre-paid meters to customers under its jurisdiction is having untold effects on its residence. I paid N6,000 bills monthly to the firm, coupled with the fact that we ( residents) do not get light always. Often times, the firm disconnects our light whenever we fail to give them money, which they cannot account for. How long will they continue to subject us to pains, caused by power outage? How long are we going to pay estimated bills; the bills that do not reflect the volume of electricity, we are using?” She asked

She urged the firm to reduce the economy pangs on the consumers by providing them meters, arguing that consumers cannot grow financially under this condition.

Another consumer, Mr Babatunde Oyelami, said the issue of non-availability of meters is affecting users of electricity.

According to him, Ikeja Electric has refused to meter many customers, despite making several attempts to get the product.

He said the firm charges him between N10,000 to N12,500 monthly, adding that the issue has serious implications on his wellbeing.

The EKEDC’s spokesman, Mr Godwin Ihemudia, said the issue of metering customers is on-going, adding that many consumers in Ebute-Metta, Lekki, Ajah and other areas will get meters soon.

He said: ‘’ Our roll on plans is on course. We would provide meters to customers district by district, compared to other DisCos. Very soon, the issue of payment of estimated billing would be a thing of the past.’’

Also, his counterpart in Ikeja Electric, Felix Ofolue, said efforts are being made to put an end to the issue of payment of crazy billings by the customers.

He urged customers to exercise patience, stressing that the firm is working to ensure prompt distribution of meters to its customers.

PoliticsDino Melaye Re-arrested By The Police After He Was Granted Bail by THEWRITERSMIND(op): 2:28am On May 03, 2018
There was mild drama yesterday as the Nigeria Police arraigned the senator representing Kogi West senatorial district in the National Assembly, Dino Melaye, before a Magistrate Court in Wuse 2, Abuja.

FINANCIAL WATCH gathered Senator Melaye who was brought to court in a stretcher, under heavy security was re-arrested by the Police as soon as he was granted bail. Melaye had reportedly jumped out of a police van that was taking him to Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, for trial on on April 24, 2018.

He was said to have broken the side glass in his attempt to get off the vehicle during the dramatic episode. The embattled senator was charged with criminal conspiracy, causing damage to government property, attempted suicide and escape from lawful custody, before Magistrate Mabel Segun-Bello.

The Police First Information Report said on April 24, 2018, about 13:30hrs at Area One round-about Abuja, within the jurisdiction of the court, “You Senator Dino Melaye, while being conveyed in a police white Hilux Bus with registration number NPF 3354 D to Lokoja Kogi State to be arraigned in Court for Conspiracy and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Firearms in Charge Number CMCL/14SC/2018 filed at the Chief Magistrate Court Lokoja, you Senator Dino Melaye intentionally broke the side windscreen of the bus and jumped out of the bus after it was blocked by a Hilux vehicle with registration number, Kaduna MKA 603 GY, occupied by your younger brother ,Samuel Melaye, and one Barrister Amefula David Emeka, and driven by yet-to-be- identified person who escaped from the scene after the blockade.”

It continued: “You Senator Dino Melaye, after breaking the side windscreen, attempted to kill yourself by jumping out of the bus and fell on the ground and thereafter started shouting that you want to kill yourself and implicate the police for your death.

“That police officers who were escorting you in the bus tried to re-arrest you back to the bus but you resisted further arrest with the help of your brother, Samuel Melaye, and some lawyers in your company and further threatened to injure the police officers if they tried to further arrest you and you finally escaped from the scene in another Hilux vehicle.”

The police stated in view of the above incidents, Melaye had committed an offence punishable under Sections 148, 153, 172, 173, 231 and 326 of the Penal Code Act. After listening to the charge, Melaye pleaded not guilty. The prosecution counsel, Alex Izinyon SAN, demanded for dates for trial but Nkem Okoro, counsel representing Melaye, persuaded the court to hear his application for bail. He argued that since the crime for which the senator was being tried was not a capital offence, he was entitled to bail under the law.

He relied on Section 162 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act, which sets out conditions to be considered before a bail application is granted or refused. However, the prosecution counsel argued against granting bail. Ruling on the bail application, Magistrate Segun-Bello noted that bail had been liberalised said under the ACJA, adding that the prosecution counsel had not placed anything before the court to show why the defendant should not be granted bail. “There is no evidence tendered before this court to substantiate the prosecution counsel’s claim that the defendant will jump bail,” the magistrate noted. In addition, the court held that the police counsel could not convince it as to how the defendant is likely to influence prosecution witnesses in the cause of his trial if released on bail. Consequently, Magistrate Segun-Bello granted Melaye bail in the tune of N90 million with two sureties in like sum.

The court ordered that one of the sureties must be a civil servant not lower than Great Level 14, and one must have easily identifiable residence in Abuja. More so, the court held that the senator must deposit his international passport with the Federal Capital Territory Police Command. He is also to report to Wuse police command every working day of the week until same is altered by the court.

The matter was adjourned to June 6. At about 4:20pm, Melaye was stretchered out of the courtroom under the watch of policemen armed to the teeth, into a waiting ambulance, under escort.

The police re-arrested Melaye after his arraignment at Chief Magistrate Court, Wuse, in order to dock him for the pending offences of Criminal Conspiracy and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Firearms in Lokoja today.

Force PRO, ACP Jimoh Moshood, in a statement, said the embattled senator would be arraigned without further delay.

The senator had staged a break-out from the police vehicle conveying him to face trial for criminal conspiracy and possession of illegal arms in Lokoja. He had earlier declared that his life was at stake in the state and applied to be prosecuted in Abuja but the police are insistent on taking him to the state “where the offence was committed”. The senator’s ordeal started after two suspects allegedly fingered him as giving them guns and hiring them to be his political thugs ahead of the 2019 general election.

BusinessSterling Bank To Rollout N10b Consumer Loans Through Specta by THEWRITERSMIND(op): 12:45am On Apr 30, 2018
Sterling Bank Plc at the weekend launched an innovative digital lending platform, known as Specta through which it will grant N10 billion loans to consumers by December this year.

The product highlights the lender’s commitment to boost consumer lending and improve the economic wellbeing of Nigerians.

According to the bank, Specta is a retail lending platform, which any Nigeria requiring a loan can access within five minutes without having to produce collateral or enduring the delay of filling forms.

Speaking at the launch of the lending platform, the bank’s Head, Value Chain Banking, Benedicta Sadoh, explained that currently, Specta is only for salaried workers, who will need the approval of the Human Resources Head of their organisations to be able to access the platform. She also explained that no collateral is needed to access loans through the platform as transactions on it had been adequately insured. She revealed that reactions to Specta have exceeded the bank’s expectations as over 700 corporates are connected to the platform.

Also speaking at the event, Group Head, Strategy and Innovation, Mr. Shina Atilola, said the decision to introduce the digital solution was in line with the lender’s objective of enriching lives, adding that with Specta, Sterling Bank was set to significantly improve Nigerians’ access to consumer loans.

He said: “We want to enrich lives. Normally, to access loans takes time as one will be required to fill forms and make several trips to the bank. But Specta has removed all that. You can sit at home or in the comfort of your car and use your lap to access the platform.”

Similarly, Sterling Bank’s Executive Director, Retail and Consumer Banking, Mr. Grama Narasimhan, said the lender was targeting 100,000 customers on the Specta platform by the end of December this year. He stressed that non-customers of the bank can also access the platform as long as they meet the requirements for accessing it. The bank disclosed at the launch that it would be offering free 20 litres of petrol to customers, who access the Specta platform between 5 pm on April 30 and 5 pm on May 1, adding that over 1,000 customers are on board the platform.

PoliticsMelaye's Recall: How Hoodlums Hijacked Inec’s Verification Materials In Kogi by THEWRITERSMIND(op): 12:38am On Apr 29, 2018
Some hoodlums attacked the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) in Mopamuro Local Government of Kogi state on Saturday.

The hoodlums disrupted the collation of results, shot in the air, damaged vehicles and escaped with results sheets, while the INEC staff fled for safety.

One of the INEC staff, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that the hoodlums were political thugs who accompanied an aide of Gov. Yahaya Bello to the INEC office to challenge the outcome of the verification exercise as it did not favour them.

The hijack of the result sheets at the council, was one of the low points of the exercise to recall Senator Dino Melaye, who represents Kogi West in the Senate.

The verification of the signatures calling for his recall was marred by low voters turn out at many polling units.

NAN Correspondent who monitored the verification exercise reports that between 70- 80 per cent of the petitioners in all the 10 wards in the council failed to come out to verify their signatures.

The exercise which lasted for six hours from 8am to 2pm, was very peaceful, free, fair and credible as the scanty petitioners were seeing verifying their signature with low turnout.

In Ward 01 (Units: 001; 002; 003) , Ward 03 (Units: 01; 02; and some other units in other wards, only 20 to 25 per cent of the petitioners were recorded as counted by the poll officers.

However, one polling unit each in Ward 06 and 07, Orokere and Takete-Ide respectively recorded 40 and 45 per cent turnout while only one polling unit recorded 90 per cent turnout (103 out of 110 petitioners.

Many voters expressed their displeasure over the appearance of their names on the recall register, saying they were shocked because they never at anytime signed any document for Melaye’s recall.

One of the voters at Ward 06, unit 04, Mrs Funmilayo Ojo, said that she was surprised to see her name among the petitioners, saying “it shall not be well with the perpetrators of such act”.

PoliticsWhy Buhari’s Ministers Shunned Reps Fuel Subsidy Panel by THEWRITERSMIND(op): 12:25am On Apr 29, 2018
Indications emerged at the weekend as to why Finance Minister, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun and her counterparts in the ministries of Petroleum Resources and Budget & National Planning jettisoned the probe panel set up by the House of Representatives to investigate the secret payment of fuel subsidy.

The Nation investigation revealed that Adeosun along with Ibe Kachikwu and Udoma Udo Udoma was to appear before the members of Committees on Finance and Petroleum Resources last Thursday. However, on the day of the sitting, the absence of key stakeholders critical to the investigation at the hearing drew the anger of the members of Joint Committees on Finance and Petroleum Resources (Downstream), who felt slighted by the executive arm of government.

Checks by our correspondent revealed that the personages failed to appear before the probe panel because they were outside the country on official assignment.

Confirming this development, Ibrahim Babangida, who is the Chairman Finance Committee and lead chairman of the joint panel however calmed frayed nerves when he revealed that letters were received from the Ministers stating the reasons for their absence.

“The Minister said he is currently outside the country. He directed NNPC GMD and DPR to respond to the committee’s requests. We received a letter from NNPC. The GMD is requesting that we give him another date convenience to us for him to appear.

“As for Finance Minister, she said she is unable to make it to the hearing as she is currently leading the Nigerian delegation at IMF from where she will represent the country in Paris.”

But the joint committee could not hide its disappointment over the non appearance of other key stakeholders including the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Kachalla Baru; Director of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Mordecai Ladan; the Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), Abdulkadir Umar Saidu who were mandated to attend the hearing on behalf of the minister also failed to attend the investigative hearing.

While describing the development as a sad moment in a democratic process, the lawmakers pointed out that the consequence of such action is severe.

The meeting was subsequently called off with assurance by Babangida that a new date will be fixed and communicated to the relevant stakeholders.

BusinessCBN To Embrace Open Banking System by THEWRITERSMIND(op): 6:28am On Apr 28, 2018
As the banking system moves to deliver quality services to consumers in the 21st century driven by new technological advancements, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has declared its interest in Open Banking System (OBS) which grants bank customers easy access to their data and opening the financial system to applications and other services.

This was disclosed by the deputy director, Banking and Payment System, CBN, Mr. Musa Itopa Jimoh who represented the apex while speaking on ‘How regulations will impact consumers bahaviour in open banking era’ at the Ennovators Breakfast Series in Lagos, a forum that attracted many industry stakeholders and organized by eMaginations. Jimoh said that “CBN is looking at how to raise the standard for all banks and fintechs to plug in.” According to Jimoh, open banking system will have great impacts on the banking system customers, noting that banks that will drive the economy are those with quality data and that uses it creatively. Open banking system is operational in Europe as Second Payment Services Directive (PSD2). Similar other implementations are ongoing in Hong Kong and Australia, and new digital finance ecosystem such as WeChat and Alipay are emerging in China based on data sharing capabilities.

The apex bank deputy director also disclosed that “CBN is working behind the scene to create Payment Service Directive (PSD3).” Highlighting the benefit, he said the banks will be able to ensure the customers based on available data, which allows the banks to understanding the behaviour of the customers. One of the restriction to financial inclusion is high cost of service.’’ According to him, “banks are sitting on huge amount of data but they are not doing anything about it.

Banks have the data of all the drivers in Nigeria since all drivers renew their license in the banks. Disruption will happen in the banking system which will make bank customers to demand for certain service and banks will be forced to offer the service.” Jimoh said that a bank can use data to determine customers’ behaviour in order to understand what kind of service to offer to them. “That the banks should be able to indemnify the customers based on available data, which allows the banks to understanding the behaviour of the customers,” he said, adding that the banks need to come up with a standard for open APIs.

He said that one of the deterrents to financial inclusion is high cost of service, stating that the CBN is looking at how to raise the standard for all banks and fintechs to plug in, adding that data privacy and confidentiality is also very important. He assured that the before the year ends, the apex bank will see how to engender open banking initiative. In a related development, a group of top banking industry professionals and FinTech companies in Nigeria have established Open Banking Nigeria with the goals to promote, develop and implement a common standard for Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).

A statement from the organisation started that underwriting models are emerging from access to alternative source of data like mobile phone usage in East Africa. In the United States, large banks are striking data sharing deal with individual partners in a departure from aggregator model. While stressing the mission of the organisation, Ayodeji Olowe, spokesperson for Open Banking Nigeria, said the objective is to rally the industry to adopt the open banking model so that the industry can improve customer experience, “develop new revenue streams, and build a sustainable service model for traditionally underserved markets.”

He said Open Banking Nigeria will rally the industry to develop processes and governance underpinning the technical connections. “We will assist banks and Fintechs alike to position themselves for success in a new environment and to anticipate the likely customer impacts,” he added.

The governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has stated that Nigerian workers would be better off when states are allowed to fix their separate minimum wages in line with their financial capacity.

Speaking yesterday, during a public hearing on the new national minimum wage for Nigerian workers for the South-South geo-political zone in Port Harcourt, Governor Wike said that states vary in financial capacity, making a uniform minimum wage unrealistic.

He said: “And for us, therefore, the single national minimum wage system is yet, another lie that betrays the distortions in our federation and the structured dislocation of the States in the power equation between the Federal Government and the federating States.

“It is our view that the country and its workers would be better of, if States are allowed to fix and pay their own minimum wages indexed to the prevailing cost of living and ability to pay. When this happens, it is possible that some States may go beyond the minimum threshold to pay a living wage, which is what our workers truly need”, Wike said.

Governor Wike said that the previous review exercise failed to give maximum weight to the existing disparity in economic potential and capabilities among the 36 States of the federation, adding that it has been difficult for most of the States to implement the existing N18, 000.00 minimum wage.

He noted that majority of the States were within the fringes of financial viability and could not meet their salary obligations to civil servants without bailouts from the Federal Government. The governor further said that enhanced wages can only be possible when the Federal Government improves the economy of the federation.

He said: “Here in Rivers State, we value our workers; we invest in their welfare in different ways, and we want them to earn living wages that can keep them and their families as comfortable as possible. The Rivers State Government therefore, supports the ongoing consultations by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage for arriving at a new national minimum wage floor for the country”.

In his opening remarks, Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige, said the exercise has been held across the six geo-political zones to ascertain the needs of Nigerian workers and employers to reach an acceptable and implementable wage. He said: “It is hoped that at the end of the exercise, we will be able to have women and men who will be engaged in productive work in equable conditions of freedom to associate and bargain collectively with equality and human dignity”

Ngige, who is also the chairman of Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage , said the aim is to ensure that the nation adopts a national minimum wage that would assure the attainment of social protection floor for Nigerian citizens.

Presenting the position of Nigerian Labour Congress in the South-South, Beatrice Otubo called for a living wage for workers.

Also speaking, representative of Trade Union Congress in the South-South, Austin Jonathan, pleaded that pensioners should be considered in the new wage regime. The public hearing attracted the representatives of the governors of Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Edo and Delta States. Also present at the meeting were labour leaders from the six states of the geo-political zone.

PoliticsLeaked WAEC Questions: Police Raid Headquarters Of Culprits by THEWRITERSMIND(op): 5:53am On Apr 28, 2018
THE Lagos State Police command has raided a syndicate which specialized in the sale of the West Africa Examination Council, WAEC questions and answers to students.

Arrested were four suspected members of the syndicate, among them, a Physics and Mathematics teacher in one of the private schools in Ondo state.

The syndicate which also has its members in Ghana, was discovered to have created different Whatsapp groups where questions and answers of the ongoing WAEC were released to their agents who in turn sold them to WAEC candidates.

Surprisingly, all the questions and answers released via the Whatsapp groups were exactly the same as those written in the examination halls.

Also arrested was an operator of a fake WAEC centre at El-Supreme Private School located at 3, Oseni Adekogbe street, in Igbogbo area of Ikorodu, with the recovery of WAEC question papers and answer sheets suspected to have been forged.

In this case, the operator, Adeniyi Joshua, of El-Supreme Church was alleged to have swindled unsuspecting members of the public during registration for WAEC examination. He was said to have conducted the examination but ended up dumping the answer scripts in a school instead of taking them to WAEC designated points.

Parading the suspects before journalists at the command headquarters yesterday, the command boss, Edgal Imohimi, described the case of the syndicate who leaked questions and answers to WAEC candidates, as a national embarrassment. He disclosed that when intelligence report on activities of the syndicate was received, he deployed the Decoy team of the Rapid Response Squad , RRS to investigate and ensure the arrest of the saboteurs.

He disclosed that the arrest of the suspects were made in Edo, Osun and Ondo states .

He said : “Investigations revealed that these atrocities were committed through the following websites: www.ceebook. net – 07069198008; www.examloaded.com – 08162563540; www.guruscamp.com – 08132876664 ; www.solutionclass.com – 08060987041 and www.expotab.com – 09039642826. There were also 32 Whatsapp groups through which the questions and answers were sent. Four suspects; Samuel Kayode, (28) Adebayo Ifeoluwa, (17) Alayande Ahmed, (16 ) and Elusode Festus,( 20) were arrested , while other suspects are in Ghana.

“We discovered that the question papers given by these syndicates are word for word with the ones provided by WAEC for the candidates. The four suspects confessed and admitted to have committed the crime. Evidence of this was established through their mobile phones.”

Effort he said, was still in progress to get owners of the websites and also to find out how the question papers got out of WAEC office, adding that the command would liaise with the WAEC to unearth the insider connivance.

He therefore, advised parents, guardians and tutors to guide and monitor their wards against engaging in examination malpractices, but rather, encourage them to face their studies, informing that there was no short way to success. For the concerned examination agency, he advised “ It is important for you to look into this devastating development and take necessary corrective measures to prevent such leakage in future.”

When approached, the suspects admitted to the offence but claimed they only saw the questions which they in turn gave to WAEC candidates.

One of them, Samuel Ola, the Physics and Mathematics teacher said , “I saw a website on the internet through which I contacted one Danladi , who sold nine questions to me for N9000. I sent him N500 recharge card as requested before the questions were sent. Thereafter, I created a WhatsApp group which has 25 students.
