Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy confirmed Edelmira Barreira as the country’s top sex official.

With this move, the government hopes to boost Spain’s falling birth rate, which is one of the lowest in the developed world.

ABUJA – A female NYSC corps member has been shot dead by suspected armed robbers on her way from a night club around 3 am on Monday, in Carribean, Wuse 2 Abuja, just three days to the completion of her compulsory National Youth Service Corps programme.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Thilza and four friends identified simply as Lola, Bisi, Pooja (an Indian) and a man had attended a show at the club where rapper Phyno performed on Sunday night.

Former Chief of Army Staff during the Second Republic, Lt. Gen. Alani Akinrinade (retd), has criticised members of the the National Assembly, saying they are a “bunch of clowns.”

According to the 77-year-old, the federal lawmakers “are the most dishonourable people I knew in the world”.

Gen. Akinrinade, who was also the Chief of Defence Staff between 1980 and 1981 under former President Shehu Shagari, said this in a video released by online medium, Sahara Reporters, on Thursday.

In the video, the elder statesman reacted with disgust at the viral video of the Aje Kun Iya song by Senator Dino Melaye.

PORT HARCOURT – Recent development indicates that all is not well within the APC in Rivers state. Key leaders of the party in the state are said to be at loggerheads over the 2019 governorship election.

The crisis in the party is over the control of the party’s machinery and is strictly between the minister of transport, Rotimi Amaechi and the senator representing Rivers south east senatorial district, Magnus Abe.

While Amaechi, who is regarded as the leader of the party in the state and wields a strong influence in the party, Abe is said to be gaining grounds politically in the state. Amaechi who usually has the final say over who gets what in the party is said to be facing a herculean task assertting his authority.

ABUJA – A former Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on New Media, Reno Omokri, has subtly called for the sack of the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu for pressuring President Muhammadu Buhari over the 2019 election.

Recall that while Amaechi recently said Buhari was fit enough to run for President in 2019, Shittu noted that the President’s body language was enough to instill fear and uprightness in Nigerians ahead of 2019 poll.

Reacting to their claims, Omokri said the two should be sacked for pressuring the president over 2019 re-election, at a time he should focus on his health.

A new Militant group which called itself Niger Delta Freedom Circle has emerged with a bang; the group has claimed responsibility for the bombing of NNPC delivery pipeline at Ihuona village in Ugbawka town in Nkanu West LGA, Enugu State. One of Buhari’s top loyalist and former Lagos State Police Commissioner, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav has again faulted the barrages voices calling for the restructuring of Nigeria saying that such a move will not yield any dividend in the end.
He made the disclosure in an interview with Daily Sun newspapers where he covered a wide range of issues and challenges facing Nigeria.
The former Lagos Police boss reiterated the need for Biafra-secessionists to drop their agitations saying that those who agitate for a breakaway Biafra state may not be there if in the end, Biafra comes into existence.”

And with all the agitations coming almost from all parts of the country, do you still stand on your position that there shouldn’t be any restructuring of the country?
You see, if we say we must restructure this country or divide it so to say, so that every component part should go, we may not be at peace for a very long time because we have intermarried and made friends from many places and many people are living in other places other than their places of origin. If we agree to restructuring, then we might have to say everybody should return back to his or her place and that may be the beginning of war amongst us. Those who are saying these are the same set of people who are agitating for states. They are agitating for states all because they want to lead in those states to steal money. Even those who are today crying for Biafra, they may not even be there if in the end, the Biafra comes into existence. I think God created Nigeria the way it is and I know that God does not make mistakes.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has told the Nigerian Police Special Joint Investigation Panel on Rivers Rerun that they were established by the Inspector-General of Police with a predetermined goal, with the aim of assisting the All Progressives Congress at the Election Tribunal.
Governor Wike also announced that the State Government has challenged the setting up of the panel in court, with the chairman of the panel, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Damian Okoro as one of the defendants, hence the people of the state will not participate in the activities of the panel.
The governor said that the Panel is biased with an agenda targeted at the PDP and her members, while shielding policemen used by the APC to commit electoral fraud.
Speaking at the Government House, Port Harcourt when the Nigerian Police Special Joint Investigation Panel on Rivers Rerun paid him a courtesy visit on Wednesday , Governor Wike regretted that the Nigerian Police is being used to protect the interest of a particular politician in the state.
He said: "I must tell you with all honesty that my people and I will not participate in the sitting of this panel. We have challenged the setting up of this panel in court.
"Let there be a judicial pronouncement on this matter. It will enrich our jurisprudence. This panel has not shown us that it will not be biased ".
He added: "All these activities are orchestrated so that APC will use the materials therefrom at the Tribunal .
"Even you as the chairman of the panel cannot say from your conscience that you are biased. "
The governor regretted that the Police High Command attempted to deny video evidence of the invasion of Rivers East Senatorial District Collation by Akin Fakorede and his SARS personnel.
He also wondered why the Police has refused to make public how DSP Alkali was killed, simply because the person indicted was a commissioner under the Minister of Transportation.
He said: "The same Akin Fakorede who was caught on video after he invaded the Rivers East Senatorial is the one who is arranging witnesses for the panel set up by the Inspector-General of Police.
"Nobody is investigating the case of Rivers APC printing fake result sheets which the police is trying to sweep under the carpet. "
He wondered why the Inspector General of Police set up a panel, when he had already made conclusions as enunciated in his letter to the Rivers State Governor.
He said since the Inspector-General of Police knew those who perpetrated the crime during the rerun legislative elections, why did he go ahead to set up a panel.
"We believe that the Panel has already taken a decision. We are convinced that the essence of the panel is to witch-hunt our people and we have evidence to show. We cannot because of one man's interest, destroy the state .
"Already, you have dismissed policemen attached to me without even hearing from me. This is the same panel that claims it is investigating the conduct of all policemen during the rerun legislative elections ".
Earlier, Chairman of the Nigerian Police Special Joint Investigation Panel on Rivers Rerun, Mr Damian Okoro said that the panel was in the state to interface with the governor on what transpired before, during and after the rerun elections.
He added that the panel will also examine the role of security personnel during the rerun legislative elections.

Taraba State Governor, Arch. Darius Ishaku has denied advising Christians across the country to bear arms.
He said he only called on the people to network with each other and security agencies to protect themselves and their communities against unprovoked attacks by armed groups.
A press release by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Slyvanus Yakubu Giwa, recalled that the governor had urged people to be conscious of migrants who become attackers overnight, cause mayhem, kill innocent people and destroy properties.
It added that the strategy of engaging community members in reporting suspicious movements and whistle blowing proved effective in managing the security challenges and ushering in relative peace in various parts of the State.
“The governor’s statement therefore should not be misconstrued to mean a call for taking up arms but rather a call for more sensitivity and proactive networking with each other and security agencies to protect themselves and their communities against unprovoked attacks by armed groups” the aide said.
It noted that governor Ishaku has been a peace advocate and has demonstrated so in his speeches and actions on all occasions and would not derail from his philosophy of peace as a prerequisite for development.
Ishaku had on Sunday during a thanksgiving service by the Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN) to celebrate new year and to pray for victims of Southern Kaduna killings and other victims of terrorism, charged Christians to defend themselves.
Ishaku, represented by the Secretary to the Taraba State Government, Anthony Jellason, lamented that the deliberate and systematic massacre of Christians in southern Kaduna, North East and other parts of Nigeria by terrorists over the years demanded actions on the part of the people.
Ishaku added that the government cannot be everywhere to defend people at all times and so the people should embrace their constitutional rights to self-defense to save themselves from the evil clutches of fundamentalist.
“I was at the site of the mayhem in parts of Ardo Kola this morning and the level of destruction there is unimaginable. A few weeks ago, it was in Gassol, then Karim. We are all aware of what is going on in Southern Kaduna.
“The people must wake up from their slumber and defend themselves. You can’t just lie down and allow yourselves to be annihilated by other groups. You have a constitutional right to self-defense and now is the time to use it. The government alone cannot do it”, Ishaku said.
