PoliticsRe: PDP Rejects Decision To Increase VAT, Urges NASS To Protect Nigerians by Timer02(op): 1:47pm On Sep 13, 2019
PoliticsPDP Rejects Decision To Increase VAT, Urges NASS To Protect Nigerians by Timer02(op): 1:40pm On Sep 13, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned and totally rejected the decision by the Federal Government to increase the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 5% to excruciating 7.2%, saying Nigerians cannot bear such burden under the prevailing agonizing economic situation.

The party says the decision is anti-people, suppressive and further confirmed the Buhari Presidency as extremely exploitative, inconsiderate and absolutely insensitive to the sufferings which it has plunged Nigerians into in the last four years.

The PDP insists that the decision to increase VAT on already impoverished citizens is in bad faith and cannot be justified under any guise.

“Indeed, only an administration that does not have the mandate of the people can seek to adopt such oppressive stance against its citizens.

“President Buhari ought to be aware that an increase in VAT will worsen our decrepit economy and put more pressure on families and business as it will result in increase in costs of goods and services that have direct bearing on the welfare of the people.

“Our party charges the Buhari Presidency not to further punish Nigerians by imposing harsh tax regime to make up for its crass incompetence and lack of capacity to effectively harness and manage our resources to create wealth for the benefit of the people” PDP stated.

The party in a statement by its spokesman, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan said the decision to increase VAT is more painful because the government cannot account for much of the resources under its disposal.

“It is more painful that the Buhari Presidency cannot give account of the huge resources at its disposal, including the taxes it has been collecting in the last four years, most of which are frittered to service the wasteful lifestyle of the cabal at the Presidency and APC chieftains.

“Instead of foisting more tax burden on Nigerians, the PDP charges President Buhari to account for and recover the over N14 trillion oil money established to have been stolen under his watch in the last four years,” the PDP claimed.

The party said it is disheartening that at the time Nigerians ought to be enjoying the economic recovery and empowerment blueprint set out by its Presidential candidate – Atiku Abubakar, which included slash in taxes and levies, they are rather faced with an unjustifiable and indefensible tax increase.

The PDP therefore urged the National Assembly to protect Nigerians and save the nation from collapse by rejecting the government’s decision which the party termed as “injurious”.

PoliticsEx-au Envoy Urges Nigeria, South Africa To Revive Commission by Timer02(op): 1:24pm On Sep 13, 2019
A FORMER Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) to Liberia and ex-Under-Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Akin O. Fayomi, has urged Nigeria and South Africa to revive their moribund Binational Commission (BNC).

Fayomi said the BNC covers diplomatic relations, including political, economic, military, trade and investment, consular matters, Diaspora issues, cultural, among others.

He said: “The African Union Commission (AUC) has been curiously silent on xenophobia. Not even a statement has been issued! Obviously, it is powerless. I don’t think we should wait or rely on the AUC or any of its organs, like the African Commission on Human Rights, before we take actions. Obviously, our destiny is in our hands.”

According to him, the Federal Government’s response to the attacks on Nigerians in South Africa is in the right direction, “although rather measured”.

Fayomi added: “I believe that diplomacy and dialogue is the way to go. But we should wield the big stick at the same time. Recalling our High Commissioner to that country and sending to them a special envoy are encouraging. The government needs to do more.

“We should let the Government of South Africa know the repercussion of their inactions. We know that they can do much more to stop these xenophobic or Afro-phobic attacks on our people. But they seem to be folding their arms, calling it criminality, making inciting statements and all that.

“We should let them know that we can go beyond dialogue and resort to suspending diplomatic relations; closing down some or all of the South African-owned business entities in Nigeria; expelling all their nationals in our country.

“However, we must give diplomacy a chance. In this case, a more vigorous approach will be to resuscitate the moribund Bi-National Commission (BNC) that we have with South Africa. This began during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. It was at the level of the vice-presidents of the two countries then – Atiku Abubakar and Jacob Zuma.

“The BNC covers the whole gamut of diplomatic relations, including political, economic, military, trade and investment, consular matters, diaspora issues, cultural, among others. If the BNC is activated, all manner of issues will be on the table for discussion.”

Also, the Presiding Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has offered to assist in conveying more Nigerians willing to return from South Africa.

This is as the list of Nigerians willing to return to the country has risen beyond 1,000.

It was learnt that the list has more people still coming forward to be documented.

The evacuation of next batch of those ready to return home is likely to take place tomorrow, it was learnt.

TravelXenophobia: Evacuation Exercise May Involve More Than One Flight by Timer02(op): 10:31pm On Sep 09, 2019
On the renewed attacks on businesses owned by foreign nationals on Sunday, he said calm has returned as the police have taken over the situation.

Throwing light on the Sunday renewed attacks, Okoli explained that there was calm until Sunday evening when the Prince of Zulu Land, and former Minister for Home Affairs, Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi addressed a huge crowed of Zulu citizens on the need to stop xenophobic attacks as it portrays the country in bad light.

This, he said, did not go down well with the crowd who stormed out of the meeting and went on destruction and looting spree of properties owned by foreign nationals.

Okoli however noted that the situation has nothing to do with Nigerians.

“The looting continued on Sunday night after one of their leaders addressed them on the need to stop the attacks on foreign nationalities and the implication of their acts.

“They were not interested in what their leader was saying and while they were leaving in their numbers they resulted in looting again and also destruction of foreign-owned properties and businesses but it has nothing to do with Nigerians this time as no Nigeria has suffered lose.

“Nigerians are following our instructions to close shops and not to do business until situation return to normalcy,” he said.
