A bus conductor, Odunayo Balogun, has been
arraigned before a Yaba Magistrate’s Court for
allegedly spitting on a female policewoman.
The incident happened on Saturday at Pako bus
stop, Akoka, Lagos.
It was learnt that the driver of the bus had parked
on the road, leading to a gridlock.
The policewoman was said to have challenged
the conductor when she could not find the driver,
leading to an argument.
The suspect was alleged to have spat on the
cop’s face and body.
Balogun was subsequently arrested and arraigned
on one count of assault.
The charge read, “That you, Odunayo Balogun, on
September 5, 2015, at about 9.50am at Pako bus

Magisterial District, did assault a police officer
while carrying out her duties, by spitting on her
face and body, and thereby committed an offence
contrary to Section 284 and punishable under
Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of
Nigeria, 2011.”
The suspect pleaded not guilty.
The magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Erinle thereafter
granted him bail in the sum of N50, 000, with two
sureties.

The Nigerian Army said Tuesday it usually find condoms, hard drugs and sex-enhancing drugs in camps captured from Boko Haram insurgents by its troops. The spokesperson for the Army, Sani Usman, said the findings underlined the military’s belief that most Boko Haram militants were not grounded in Islam and were not driven by Islamic ideology. Mr. Usman, a colonel, said a lot of insurgents so far arrested could not even recite the Quoran, the holy book of Muslims. He said those arrested by troops of Nigerian Army’s 3rd Division Tuesday turned out to be suppliers of hard drugs and other stimulants to terrorists. They were nabbed between Depchi and Geidam, Geidam Local Government Area in northern part of Yobe State, he said. Mr. Usman added, “The arrested persons were also engaged in the supply of fuel in addition to hard drugs such as Cannabis (Indian Hemp), Chlorofone substance (AKA Madaran suck and die) and Tramol, amongst others. “You will recall that sometimes ago we reported that ironically most of the Boko Haram terrorists captured by Nigerian military cannot read the Holy Qur’an, some of them cannot even recite the first chapter- Suratuh Al-Fatiha and yet they claimed they wanted to establish an ‘Islamic State’. “When the Nigerian military captured their bases and training camps, they never found Qur’an or other Islamic books, what were mostly found were ammunition, local charms, condoms and all sort of drugs including sex enhancing ones in their enclaves. “The arrest of these drug suppliers has reinforced that fact, more so as they have been making very useful statements.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/189699-instead-of-islamic-books-we-usually-find-condoms-sex-drugs-in-boko-haram-camps-nigerian-army.html |
Mohammed Ali Zonoobi bends his head as the priest pours holy water over his black hair. "Will you break away from Satan and his evil deeds?" pastor Gottfried Martens asks the Iranian refugee. "Will you break away from Islam?" "Yes," Zonoobi fervently replies. Spreading his hands in blessing, Martens then baptizes the man "in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost." Mohammed is now Martin — no longer Muslim, but Christian. Zonoobi, a carpenter from the Iranian city of Shiraz, arrived in Germany with his wife and two children five months ago. He is one of hundreds of mostly Iranian and Afghan asylum seekers who have converted to Christianity at the evangelical Trinity Church in a leafy Berlin neighborhood. Like Zonoobi, most say true belief prompted their embrace of Christianity. But there's no overlooking the fact that the decision will also greatly boost their chances of winning asylum by allowing them to claim they would face persecution if sent home. Martens recognizes that some convert in order to improve their chances of staying in Germany — but for the pastor motivation is unimportant. Many, he said, are so taken by the Christian message that it changes their lives. And he estimates that only about 10 percent of converts do not return to church after christening. "I know there are — again and again — people coming here because they have some kind of hope regarding their asylum," Martens said. "I am inviting them to join us because I know that whoever comes here will not be left unchanged." Being Christian alone does not help an applicant, and Chancellor Angela Merkel went out of her way this week to reiterate that Islam "belongs in Germany." But in Afghanistan and Iran, for example, conversion to Christianity by a Muslim could be punished by death or imprisonment, and it is therefore unlikely that Germany would deport converted Iranian and Afghan refugees back home. None will openly admit to converting in order to help their asylum chances. To do so could result in rejection of their asylum bid and deportation as Christian converts. Several candidates for baptism at Martens' church would not give their names out of fear of repercussions for their families back home. Most said their decision was based on belief, but one young Iranian woman said she was convinced most people had joined the church only to improve their chances for asylum. Congregation member Vesam Heydari initially applied for asylum in Norway and converted there in 2009. But his case was rejected because the Norwegian authorities did not believe he would be persecuted as a Christian in Iran, so he moved to Germany to seek refugee status here — and is awaiting a decision. He criticized many of the other Iranian church members, saying they were making it much harder for "real, persecuted Christians" like himself to get approved for asylum. "The majority of Iranians here are not converting out of belief," Heydari said. "They only want to stay in Germany." Meanwhile, as other churches across Germany struggle with dwindling numbers of believers, Martens has seen his congregation swell from 150 just two years to more than 600 parishioners now — with a seemingly unending flow of new refugees finding the way to his congregation. Some come from cities as far away as Rostock on the Baltic Sea, having found out by word-of-mouth that Martens not only baptizes Muslims after a three-month "crash course" in Christianity, but also helps them with asylum pleas. Other Christian communities across Germany, among them Lutheran churches in Hannover and the Rhineland, have also reported growing numbers of Iranians converting to Christendom. There are no exact numbers on how many Muslims have converted in Germany in recent years — and they are a tiny minority compared to the country's overall 4 million Muslims. But at least for Berlin, Martens describes the number of conversions as nothing short of a "miracle." And he says he has at least another 80 people — mostly refugees from Iran and a few Afghans — waiting to be baptized. Germany is witnessing an unprecedented surge of asylum-seekers this year, with the number of migrants expected to reach 800,000 this year, a fourfold increase on last year. Many of the new arrivals come from Muslim countries such as Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan or Pakistan. While refugees from civil-war-torn Syria will almost definitely be receiving asylum status, the situation is more complicated for asylum seekers from Iran or Afghanistan, which are seen as more stable. In recent years, roughly 40-50 percent from those two countries have been allowed to stay in the country, with many of those getting only temporary permission to remain. Germany's Federal Office for Migration and Refugees said it does not comment on the reasons individual applicants give when they apply for asylum, or on how many people receive refugee status in Germany based on religious persecution. Zonoobi, who dressed all in white for his baptism on Sunday, said he had attended secret religious services in Iran ever since friends introduced him to the Bible at age 18. He decided to flee to Germany after several Christian friends were arrested for practicing their religion. For Zonoobi and his wife Afsaneh — who since her baptism goes by the name of Katarina — the christening marks a new beginning. "Now we are free and can be ourselves," she said. President Buhari gave the assurance at a joint press conference with President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana. “After I was sworn-in, I said I will have my cabinet in September. I expect that Nigerians should ask me questions after the 30th of September if I do not do so,” President Buhari said while responding to a question on the appointment of ministers. President Buhari also told reporters that the Nigerian military, in close collaboration with the Multi-National Joint Task Force, has recorded remarkable progress in the fight against Boko Haram since he assumed office as President. “The first thing I did after I came into office was to reorganize the military and clear orders were given to them in terms of retraining, re-equipping and redeployment of troops. “In the northeast, the military is gaining ground and Boko Haram has been limited to the Sambisa forest. “Internally Displaced Persons are gradually moving back home and they are being reintegrated into their respective communities,” President Buhari said. On the declaration of assets, the President affirmed that it was a constitutional requirement that all public office holders in Nigeria should declare their assets before and after their term in office. “I recall that in 1975 when late Murtala Mohammed became the Head of State, we were lined up - governors, ministers, members of the Supreme Military Council. Officials of Ministry of Justice were brought and every individual was made to declare his assets. “All Heads of States and Government, governors, ministers, permanent secretaries have to declare their assets because it is a constitutional requirement. “I have declared my assets four times. When I was governor in 1975, I declared. After being Minister of Petroleum and as a member of Supreme Military Council, I declared. When I was Head of State and now as a President, I have also declared. Earlier, President Mahama said both leaders had fruitful discussions on how to enhance bilateral relations and improve regional security. President Mahama said that Nigeria and Ghana will soon begin the process of reviving their joint commission for cooperation. The Ghanaian President added that both leaders also agreed to encourage closer cooperation between the intelligence and anti-graft agencies of both countries. He thanked President Buhari for his visit and assured him of Ghana’s support and cooperation with Nigeria in the fight against terrorism http://saharareporters.com/2015/09/07/i-will-name-my-cabinet-month-president-buhari |
I PLEDGE to Buhari my President, to be , faithful, loyal and honest. To serve him with all my strength. To uphold his honour and glory so I will not be counted amongst his enemies. So help me God. Knowing that he is an ‘ol soja’ I need to pledge my one hundred percent loyalty to him as he marks his first hundred days in office. Those who asked him to present a score card of his one hundred days in office, are trying to introduce an American culture to which we are allergic. There are also those who want to claim that he is not implementing the party’s Road Map. They fail to realise that this was merely a road map to the Presidency, not the programme he is expected to implement. In any case, who but the unpatriotic will expect him to implement his manifesto when we did not know things were so bad? All we can do is hope. I do not think the ruling APC set out to deceive Nigerians as some claim; it is only that it got its facts wrong. It was also not dialectical; in its hurry to move the country forward, it did not go back to see where we are coming from or where we are. But we must believe the APC when it told us, that President Buhari achieved far more in four weeks, than former President Goodluck Jonathan accomplished in six years. With such first class performance, he can politically be said to have completed his tenure and can retire to Daura. But my fear is that such suggestion can be misconstrued, and I may be counted in the camp of retired Colonel Sambo Dasuki, the former National Security Adviser who was caught planning treasonable felony by having seven high calibre rifles in his house. That arsenal is enough to overthrow the combined governments of Russia, United States and China! The President is too modest to present his monumental achievements in his first one hundred days. So as show of deep loyalty, I have decided to attempt a summary. First is insecurity. I echo the popular singsong; Buhari has degraded the capacity of Boko Haram. We now have a Commander-in-Chief who stays up to bolt the doors, when we all have gone to bed. When in two months, Boko Haram would have been pulverised; the attention will be on kidnapping, banditry and cultism. As Nigerians, we have suffered power blackout since birth. Now without buying transformers, generating more power, laying additional cables or building any new system, this is now a thing of the past. My brother, Garba Shehu, the President’s Spokesman in explaining this phenomenon, said it is Buhari’s body language that changed the performance of the privatised power sector. I put it down to a miracle; Buhari said, Let there be light. As a patriot, I now want to sell my generators and inverter. A similar miracle saw the refineries sprouting back to life. Na God win o! The signs have been there; but disbelievers have been blind. In his first one hundred days, the President has run the country quite efficiently without Ministers thereby saving us a lot of money. If he goes on like this for another hundred days, we will save more money that can be used to build schools, hospitals, roads and fund social security. My only regret is that he was too much in a hurry to inaugurate the National Assembly. He has also cleansed the Directorate of State Security by sacking the mouthy Marylyn Ogar and other senior spooks while also curtailing their powers in the Presidential Villa. Our President has also publicly declared his assets. My fear which he has confirmed, is that relative to his fellow generals in office, he is a poor man. But our amiable Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo rescued the image of a poor Presidency. I support all the actions and inactions of President Buhari, although I confess to being confused sometimes. For example what are the summersaults on foreign exchange about? What really is the policy? Within hundred days, the war against corruption is in its last stages. He must resist pressures to probe beyond the Jonathan years; you don’t because you want to scratch your body, peel off your skin or scratch yourself to the bone. Leave Halliburton, leave Power Sector, leave Pentascope-NITEL, leave PTF probes! We should not be so impatient as to assess a man in his first hundred days in office; I have no doubt that President Buhari will make all the necessary changes and fulfill his electoral promises; all we need is patience and good luck. It is heart warming to see so many professors and educated people speaking up for the President and endorsing all the actions he has taken, or may take in future. If all the good people he can find, even for ministerial appointments are from Daura, he should go ahead and appoint them. I am learning to be as patriotic and loyal as one of my old acquaintances, Sola Salako who declared on her wall “Just so they know; there is nothing PMB (Buhari) can do right or wrong that will ever make me regret supporting his candidacy or make me wish we had kept GEJ (Jonathan) in office. NOTHING! No matter how slow, nepotistic, outdated, self-righteous or insensitive you claim he is, he is still 100,000 times a better option than GEJ…I don’t care if he fills the whole country with his family members” This is so brilliantly put, that I recommend we replace the National Pledge with it. I am tempted to go on, but I need to stop here so I don’t get invited to a duel on the social media where thoughts are cheap and words are used and discarded like rain water. I hear that the masses in our country drink champagne through the throats of their leaders; on the occasion of a hundred days in office, let champagne pop, and let them drink on behalf of the citizenry. Hip, hip, hip, hurrah! Hundred gbosa to the peoples general! http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/i-pledge-to-buhari-my-president/

Beautiful Olamide Aroguma is the current Miss Global Peace Nigeria 2015. She is so passionate about touching lives that she set up an empowerment program on skill acquisition immediately she assumed office. In this interview, she talks about the programme, her modelling career and other issues. Excerpts…. How did you get to be part of the Miss Global Peace Nigeria pageant? I saw it online and a friend of mine told me to go for it and I decided to purchase the form. Have you participated in a beauty pageant before? Yes, I represented Kaduna State at the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria Pageant in 2011. When did you start modeling? I started immediately after MBGN. Before then, I wasn’t into modeling. So, what gave you the confidence to go for the MBGN contest even though you weren’t yet a model? Before the MBGN pageant, people used to tell me to go into modeling since I’ve got the looks. So, I decided to give it a shot. What’s being the Miss Global Peace all about? The office of the Miss Global Peace 2015 signifies unity and peaceful co-existence. My role as the queen is to ensure peace and unity among communities. People can come to me to render any assistance within my power. How have you been carrying out your responsibilities? I have an empowerment programme on skill acquisition. People come there and we teach them how to design outfits, soaps and other things. What makes the Miss Global Peace pageant different from other pageants? I think other pageants emphasize more on beauty rather than passion. They organise the pageant and it ends there. The queens come on air and talk about their projects, but you don’t see them physically carrying them out. Even if the government is supposed to provide for its citizens, we still have to do something on our own. I’m passionate about touching lives and helping others, that’s why I created the empowerment programme. Since becoming queen, what has changed about you? Nothing really, I’m still the same person. It’s just that I go for events and people want to take pictures with me. Are there times when you just feel like being you without the fame and glamour? I’m always me. I’m more of an introvert. I spend more of my time with my family and watching movies. When I’m not carrying out my duties as a beauty queen, I stay indoors. I’ve never had many friends and the few friends I have are happy for me. What are the advantages of being a beauty queen? People give you audience, they want to listen to what you have to say. Besides, it has opened doors for me in so many ways. What prices have you paid to get to where you are? After MBGN, when I started modeling, people would call me for casting. You could go for about five castings in a day and still not get picked. You keep spending your money going from one place to the other to no avail. You get sad and frustrated, but at the end of the day, I think all that has made me who I am now. Describe your dream man? There’s no dream man. People just lust over things that are not reasonable. Most times, we end up falling for someone who’s not our dream man. I don’t have a picture in my head, I just believe in wherever love takes me. I can fall in love with anybody as long as he’s Godfearing. (Cut in) Do you believe in love at first sight? I actually don’t. I believe we need to take time to know ourselves and then, grow in love instead of falling in love. Have you ever fallen for someone at first sight? No, I haven’t. I can see someone for the first time and really admire the person. But fall in love? That’s a big one. Have you ever had a crush on someone? When I was younger, I used to have a huge crush on Thierry Henry, the footballer. We are just two girls in my family, which explains why I was the tomboy. I used to watch football a lot with my dad. While watching Thierry Henry play football on TV, I’d tell my dad ‘That’s my future husband!’. Now that you’re older, who’s your crush? That would be Prof. Attahiru Jega (Laughs). I love his calmness and the fact that he’s so composed and cool. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/i-have-a-crush-on-prof-jega-olamide-aroguma/

NIGERIAN SUPREME COUNCIL FOR ISLAMIC AFFAIRS (EKITI STATE COUNCIL) PRESS RELEASE The attention of Muslims in Ekiti State had been drawn to the press release by Mr. Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ayodele Fayose of Eliti State on Public Communication and New Media, in which the Governor reacted to what he saw as lopsided appointments by President Muhammadu Buhari. While Muslims in Ekiti State concede to Mr Governor the right to air his opinion as enshrined in the country’s constitution, we are however bemused that the Governor who had continuously subjected Muslims in his own State to various forms of deprivation since he assumed office 7 months, 18 days ago could have the temerity to condemn perceived action of deprivation by any other government. According to our Governor, President Buhari had appointed 31 people into various offices out of which only 7 are from the southern part of the country. Fair as this observation may appear, we feel it may interest the listening public to know what this same Governor that is now calling the kettle black is doing in his own State. The Governor spurs Muslims in the State to react with his references to lopsided appointments and the alleged infraction of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in his statement. Before now, people were of the opinion that the Governor was oblivious of the constitutional imperatives when he was making his appointments and the Muslims were virtually left out. When efforts were made by the State Muslims to see and advice him properly, he ignored us. The Governor in his statement described the actions of President Buhari as “tinted in ethnic and tribal coloration”. He then posited that “if such step is not checked, it will threaten the unity of Nigeria”. The portions of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, which governor Fayose was referring to are Sections 14 (4) and 15 (2). While Section 14 (4) stated inter alia that: “The composition of Government of a State ........ shall be carried out in such a manner as to recognise the diversity of the people within its area of authority ......”, Section 15 (2) elucidates further on the diversity as it unequivocally stated that “(2) Accordingly, national integration shall be actively encouraged whilst discrimination on the grounds of place of origin, sex, RELIGION STATUS (emphasis ours), ethnic or linguistic association or ties shall be prohibited”. No Governor in Ekiti State had committed more serious infractions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria than Governor Fayose in the issues of appointment during his first and second tours of duties in the State. Currently, the following distribution pattern of political and top bureaucrats prevail under Governor Ayodele Fayose’s watch: 1. Governor - 1 Christian, Muslim, NIL ; 2. Deputy Governor - 1 Christian, Muslim, NIL; 3. Speaker - 1 Christian Muslim, NIL; 4. Deputy Speaker - 1 Christian Muslim, NIL; 5. Judges - All Christians, Muslim, NIL; 6. Special Advisers - Christians, 1 Muslim; 7. Secretary to the State Government - 1 Christian, Muslim, NIL 8. 14 State Commissioners - All Christians, Muslim, NIL; 9. Chief of Staff - 1 Christian, Muslim, NIL; 10. Director General (Due Process) - 1 Christian, Muslim, NIL ; 11. Chairman, Petroleum Task Force - 1 Christian, Muslim, NIL; 12. 26 No Permanent Secretaries - All Christians, Muslim, NIL ; 13. 13 No Executive Secretaries - All Christians Muslim, NIL; 14. 5 No Chairman/ Members of SUBEB - All Christians, Muslim, NIL; 15. 5 No Chairman/ Members of HASC - 4 Christians, 1 Muslim; 16. 5 No Chairman/ Members of EKSIEC - All Christians, Muslim, NIL; 17. 5 No Chairman/ Members, Governing Board of EKSU – All Christians, Muslim, NIL; 18. 7 No Chairman/ Members of College of Education - All Christians, Muslim, NIL; 19. 7 No Chairman/ Members of Governing Board of College of Health Tech - All Christians, No Muslim; 20. 16 Education Secretaries President – All Christians, Muslim, NIL; 21. 16 Caretaker Chairmen of Local Government Councils - 15 Christians, 1 Muslim;. It may interest the reading public to know also that this is the same Ekiti State where, at different times and under different democratic governments, Muslims produced Deputy Governor, Secretary to the State Government, Chairmen and Members of Statutory Boards and Commissions, Special Advisers, Permanent Secretaries, Chairmen and Members of government parastatals, etc. However, in the wisdom of our fair Governor, what Muslims deserve in his government are just 1 SPECIAL ADVISER, 1 out of 16 LG Councils CARETAKER CHAIRMEN, 1 MEMBER of Ekiti |
CHRIS KEHINDE NWANDU: INFIDELITY OF JUSTICE Few hours ago, Nigeria’s most widely read Newspaper, THE PUNCH, reported that a Lagos Federal High court Judge ordered one of Nigeria’s popular social media blogger/ journalist, Chris Kehinde Nwandu held without bail . The report states: “Justice Mohammed Yunusa of a Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the prison remand of one Chris Nwandu for allegedly aiding a blogger, Seun Oloketuyi, who is facing charges of defamation and cybercrime.” “Oloketuyi was on August 25, 2015 arraigned on two counts for allegedly publishing defamatory story on his blog, www.naijahottestgist.com , against the Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank Plc, Nnamdi Okonkwo. He was accused of publishing on his blog that Okonkwo had an extramarital affair with one Justina, a married woman working in the Marketing Department of Fidelity Bank. Oloketuyi was alleged to have added in the publication that the affair between Okonkwo and Justina resulted in Justina’s husband, Ben, sending her out.” Mr Nwandu is currently in jail on the order of the judge, he has not been tried and or found guilty of any crime. He has been charged with being an accomplice to defamation. The police accused him by alleging he is an accomplice to a published story that brought Mr. Okonkwo to ridicule and disrepute. But has Chris Kehinde Nwandu been tried and found guilty or is Judge Yunusa bowing to loaded trucks of money from the Fidelity Bank Boss?. If there is a libelous intent, let Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo prove this beyond reasonable doubts in the court of law that his character has been defamed by the publication..Let the court try this case openly rather than submitting its jurisdiction to the "Money Power" of Okonkwo... A trial has not taken place, yet this young appealing popular blogger is being locked up for allegations or charges by the Police prosecutor. This is a vicious attempt by the rich to suppress the journalist, using state apparatus such as the judiciary and the Police to intimidate Mr. Nwandu and perhaps, social media bloggers and reporters. Reporters, bloggers must collectively rise against this new stupid tactics to threaten our rights to free speech. If Mr Okonkwo feels he has been maligned maliciously, he should seek legal remedy the right way and not buy his way through a corrupt, dirty and tainted judicial system. Judge Yunusa‘s order to detain Nnwandu contradicts the legal position that you are innocent until proven guilty. Let Mr. Nwandu have his day in court, not in prison. Justice delayed is justice denied. Judge Yunusa, Set Chris Kehinde Nwandu Free Now!!!. I am writing this post with a lot of caution and trepidation. I have never subscribed to ethnic chauvinism and I actually detest being labelled as a tribal bigot. I am usually very careful because I have friends and colleagues from every part of the nation and some of my best friends are not even from my side of the country. However, recent events are making me to have a deeper reflection and I wish we- Southerners in this instance- can have some kind of introspection. Out of 25 appointments made so far, 18 are from the North, 3 are from the South West, 4 are from the South South while the South East has ZERO appointments. A tweet which I saw today stated that “southerners are only competent when it’s time for elections but northerners are competent in terms of governance” and this made the following thoughts run through my mind: 1. Only Southerners have been accusing fellow Southerners of corruption. Oshiomole has been attacking Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as if Ngozi turned down his marriage proposal. The same Oshiomole tried to make nonsense of Akinwumi Adeshina’s successes in the agriculture sector. Ambode tried to pull Fashola down and successfully smeared him with stains. Maybe that’s why Fashola did not get the Chief of Staff role. I’m yet to see a Northerner accuse another Northerner of corruption, even when they belong to different parties. The closest a Northerner got was when the new Kano State Governor attacked Rabiu Kwankaso but he quickly sheathed his sword and even disowned previous reports of attacks. Why are we like this? 2. Are Southerners the only ones who are corrupt? Were there no northerner heading the ministries and parastatals? Did the outgone Comptroller-General of Customs, Abdullahi Dikko not have an alleged case of certificate forgery but he still served out his tenure until he resigned voluntarily? I’m not in support of corruption under any guise but the fight against corruption must not be seen to be sectional. 3. How come it’s easier for the President to believe that Sanni Abacha was not corrupt in spite of recovered loot while it is so easy for him to believe Goodluck Jonathan is irredeemably corrupt? 4. I still remember that aside from God, Tinubu made Tambuwal what he is today. The same Tambuwal would later call Femi Gbajabiamila ‘incompetent’ and rated Dogara as more competent. The same Tambuwal was propped up by Tinubu, a Southerner against a fellow Southerner, Mulikat Akande. Obasanjo was very key to denying Goodluck Jonathan a second term. A good number can still recall how OBJ tore his PDP membership card in public glare. The Northerners find it easy to support themselves but we are always pulling ourselves down. Babangida Aliyu, Sule Lamido and all the other Northern Governors including the former PDP Chairman Adamu Muazu often times refused to campaign for Goodluck Jonathan openly and many times even espoused the virtues of the opposing candidate on the rostrum! 5. Southern leaders and Presidents pull down Southern business men but prop up Northern ones. How many people still remember how Obasanjo ran Mike Adenuga out of town but both Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan made Aliko Dangote what he is today. No northern leader goes against their own. I dare to put it on record that President Buhari will never go against Aliko Dangote for any reason. 6. How come OBJ pardoned Salisu Buhari, the ex- Speaker who forged his credentials and he later was given an appointment as a Governing Council member of a University and heavens did not fall- but when Goodluck Jonathan pardoned Alamieyeseigha it became one of the major issues counted against him? Is there one rule for some and another rule for others? 7. We find it easy to raise our voices in support of the deportation of Buruji Kashamu but have no qualms with Atiku Abubakar strutting around the corridors of power. 8. Only Southerners find it so easy to abuse their elders when they voice opinions not in tandem with the popular opinion. We find it easy to diss Afenifere elders and call them ‘Afenifebi’ while hurling expletives and curses at them. We even abuse our kings and priests. Northerners will never abuse an Emir no matter how unpopular what he said is. Can you imagine any Northerner raising his voice against the Sultan? In spite of Tanko Yakassai, Balarabe Musa and Dangiwa Umar’s perceived support for Jonathan, northern youths did not abuse them. But our own youths run down our elders on social media while our educated elite also support the act. These are some of the thoughts that have been running through my mind. I don’t pretend to have all the answers and I do this at the risk of being labelled an ethnic bigot. The point however is that Southerners have to get their acts right. We have to put our house in order. The bickering must stop. Let’s engage our emotional intelligence. Let’s not allow others to exploit our tendency to self-destruct. Bayo Adeyinka is a journalist. Some call it the Buhari bounce. Others describe it as the Buhari effect. Yet some others say it is the Buhari aura. One thing is, however, crystal clear. Things have not been the same in the past 100 days in Nigeria, since Muhammadu Buhari assumed the presidency. A new sheriff has truly come to town. Exactly 100 days ago, he climbed the podium at Eagle Square in Abuja and got inaugurated as president, 30 years after he had been toppled from power as military head of state. He promised to belong to nobody, and to belong to everybody. It is a pledge that still resonates loudly today, and will surely echo for a long time to come. On a day like this, you would expect a presidential spokesman to chronicle the achievements of his principal in office. He has turned stone to bread, slain the dragon, and climbed Mount Olympus in ten seconds. But that is not what I want to do. There are some intangible, almost imperceptible achievements, but which run very deep, and are quite fundamental. Those are the ones I'll rather talk of, while we leave the tangibles till some other day. Oh, he's escaping. There are no concrete achievements, some wailing wailers would cry. True? Not true. I could have decided to focus on the bloody nose being given to Boko Haram in the North-East, which would see the country rid of insurgency soon, the rallying of leaders of other neighboring countries to deploy a Joint Multinational Task Force, the openness displayed about government finances and the welfare package instituted for states that couldn't pay salaries, the Treasury Single Account, which would promote transparency and accountability in governance, the disappeared fuel queues, fast- tracking of the cleanup of Ogoni land, reduction in the cost of governance, and many others. But I will not focus on all those. The day cometh! When a new sheriff comes into town, disorder gives way to order. Chaos flees. Impunity is swept away. Laxity gives way to diligence, and people change their old, unedifying ways. When you have a Wild, Wild West situation prevailing, the new sheriff comes, and stamps his authority. Old things then pass away, behold, everything becomes new. Nigeria had always needed attitudinal change. That was why the Buhari regime launched the War Against Indiscipline in the 1980s. And the war was succeeding, till a spanner was thrown in the works through regime change. Buhari was called all sorts of names then: despot, tyrant, iron-fist ruler, etc. But the discerning knew. They understood that it was a change we needed. And that change was postponed for 30 years. But what is bred in the bones never goes out through the flesh. Immediately after Buhari returned on May 29, Nigerians knew that discipline was back. The bird of the homestead told the ones in the bush, and they all sat up. No unnecessary chirping. Stealing is now corruption, they whispered to themselves. God help you if you get caught. Now, consider the situation with electricity and with our refineries. Electricity has climbed to about 5,000 Megawatts. Some refineries, which had not produced a drop of fuel for years, have cracked into life. Even the perennial queues in our petrol stations have disappeared, vanished. Is it because Buhari threw billions of dollars at the problems? No. Those things simply responded to the presence of the new sheriff in town. Those who manned those schedules could afford to be laid back in the past. But not anymore! The music has changed, and the dance steps must follow suit. And would Buhari take credit for the newfound zeal and efficiency? Not the plain and honest man from Daura. The broadcaster Omotayo Omotoso had come to the presidential villa to interview him sometime in July. And she had asked what the magic wand he waved was, that refineries, long comatose, had sprang back to life. The President responded that it would be dishonest of him to have claimed he did anything. He had not touched refineries at all. But unknown to the President, he did something. He had swept into town with his reputation for efficiency, and for achieving results. And the refineries, fuel supply, electricity supply, responded to the new sheriff. May things continue to get better till the change becomes enduring and irreversible. Amen somebody! Another imperceptible but momentous achievement is the faith that Nigerians now have in their leader. Yes, the opposition numbers in millions, and naturally so. A political party had held power at the centre for 16 years, and its loyalists would not simply disappear, or get converted overnight. About 12 million Nigerians had voted for the presidential candidate of that party in the March 2015 general elections. Would they just cross over to the winning side? It often takes awhile. But despite all that, a great deal of Nigerians, a vast majority, believe in the new sheriff. And that is great achievement. A big deal. When the citizenry believe in their leader, and almost can swear by him, it is no mean feat. The NOI polls, in a survey in July, revealed that over 70% of Nigerians were happy with the Buhari administration. And I can bet that the percentage would rise, as the months and years roll by. Faith in leadership is something that does not come cheap. And this one! Even our foreign reserve knows that a new sheriff is in town, and has responded appropriately. In June, just one month into office, and with the plugging of some leakages and loopholes, foreign reserve surged from $29 billion to $31.89. Holy Moses! Just in one month. Well, that is what a new sheriff can do. He brings sanity, confidence and probity to the system. And you would agree that Nigeria needs such shot in the arm, if we consider recent past experiences, when our treasury was like a bag filled with holes. An evidence of the believability of the new sheriff, and the confidence reposed in him, is the disclosure that came this week from Ambassador Godknows Igali, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power. He said since Buhari came to office, not a single sabotage of the power infrastructure has been recorded, and it is one of the reasons that electricity supply keeps improving. But did Buhari line up soldiers across the power infrastructure? Did he hire a combination of OPC, Egbesu, MASSOB, MEND and Arewa youths to keep vigil? No. Just believability. Those who are so angry with the country, and would go to any extent to sabotage development, have decided to give the sheriff a chance. They have heard of his reputation. A man that believes in fairness and justice. He would do right to all parts of the country. Can you imagine the respect our sheriff commands on the international scene, and how it redounds to the glory of the average Nigerian? American President Barack Obama said Buhari came onto his job with reputation of integrity and a clearcut agenda. Ambassador Johnny Carson, also during the U.S trip in July, said the Nigerian President was a man of honour and integrity. Everywhere he goes, the Nigerian President is lauded and garlanded for his virtues. And the image of the country is burnished and repositioned in the process. Surely, greater days are ahead. Some people say the sheriff did not hit the ground running, as he is yet to constitute his cabinet in 100 days. And I usually ask such people: when you hit the ground, and you land in mud, how do you begin to run immediately? You can only sink deeper, if you attempt to run. The thing to do is to first clear the mud, till you get to terra firma, and then you can begin to run. President Buhari has spent time trying to clean the Augean stable he inherited. And he is succeeding. Sheriffs can either come in with guns blazing, shooting malefactors to kingdom come, or simply stamp their authority on the situation by sheer force of personality and presence. The Nigerian sheriff seems to have opted for the second option for now. But we should never forget that sheriffs are licensed to shoot. And those shots can be lethal for lawbreakers. In a matter of months, you can ask those who had bled our treasury to the point of death. They'll have stories to tell. Some of sports biggest stars including Frank Lampard, Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo were all given the honour of being included in the new Guinness World Records book and it may comes as a surprise to see Chris Smalling handed two awards. New York City star Lampard was presented with his for the most Premier League teams scored against, after former club Chelsea became victim No 39. Legend Andy Cole previously held the record with 38, but the 37-year-old trumped him after coming off the bench for Manchester City to fire home a trademark strike at the Etihad Stadium. Lampard was delighted to be featured in the book and spoke about being a huge fan. He said: 'I set goals throughout my career to break records and this is one I never imagined to get. I am a big fan of the books and always read the books with my daughters before bed so to feature in it is amazing. 'It was a weird feeling when I scored but it did get me the record so I am also very happy with the goal.' Jose Mourinho was the man in charge when Lampard broke his record but it's not all bad for the Chelsea boss, after he was awarded with four different awards. The Guinness World Records book team visited the Cobham training ground to present the 52-year-old with his certificates, which included: The most Points in a Premier League season (95), most Champions League's won at different clubs (two), youngest manager to reach 100 Champions League games (49 years 12 days) and most games unbeaten at home in the Premier League (77). In pure Mourinho style, he admitted he was looking forward to winning future prizes: 'The fact that I can hang these awards in my office is nice. It's something fun and as a kid you could never imagine that one day you would be in Guinness World Records Book. I'm now more focused on winning the next game than on what I've done in the last 10 or 15 years.' Manchester United defender Smalling also bagged himself two records after scoring the fastest goal in the Premier League by a substitute from kick-off, when he netted against Burnley in just five minutes, nine seconds last season. He scored again to earn himself a second record, for the most goals in the Premier League scored by a substitute in the first half to join the likes of Lampard, Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo. Of course you can't forget Real Madrid star Ronaldo, who scored his 27th hat- trick in La Liga - overtaking club legend Alfredo Di Stefano - and is also the most followed athlete and person on both Facebook (over 100 million likes) and Twitter (over 27m followers). http://www.mxcliq.com/2015/09/jose-mourinho-lampard-chris-smalling.html?m=1

Nigeria’s politicians are never short on promises. After 16 years of rule by a party which oversaw rising corruption, growing poverty levels, and a failing war against Boko Haram insurgents, its population has grown used to them being broken. Still, many Nigerians hope that those of their new president, Muhammadu Buhari, will prove stronger. When he promised “change” ahead of March elections, Nigerians voted him in with a hefty majority, bringing about the first such democratic power transfer in the country’s history. So is Buhari delivering? Or as he approaches 100 days in power, due on September 5, is he “failing” already? Page-upon-page of pledges before election The 100-day marker has been used to gauge presidential effectiveness ever since it was pioneered by Franklin D. Roosevelt, who inherited the depression-stricken American economy in the 1930s. The idea is that governments can be at their most effective at their dawn, when their political capital is high, their leadership fresh, and their control of parliament strong. The work they do early on can serve as a model for the future. In almost two decades of civilian rule, Nigeria has also taken to measuring its politicians on their early performance. Both before and since the election, the Nigerian media has reported widely on a series of promises they say were made by Buhari and his campaign team ahead of the poll. The main source for this appears to be the president’s “Covenant with Nigerians”, which was distributed to the media before the vote and contains page-upon-page of pledges. In it, the president vows to “Publicly declare my assets and liabilities” and to “Ensure that… no force, external or internal, will occupy even an inch of Nigerian soil”. He also says he will “Unveil a health sector review policy”; “Address the gaps in power sector privatisation”; and “Ensure that all children of school age… are in school”. These were widely reported at the time as pledges to be carried out in the first 100 days, setting out “what Nigerians should expect from Buhari’s first 100 days in office” according to one report and “what I will do in my first 100 days”, according to another. But as September 5 approaches, a row has broken out over whether or not Buhari and his team made any commitment to achieve the promises within his first three and a bit months in office. ‘Too late to disown the promises’ Asked by Africa Check, Lai Mohammed, the ruling party’s national publicity secretary, said he was “not aware that [Buhari] promised to deliver anything in his first 100 days”. The presidential spokesman Garba Shehu went further by saying he “did not fund or authorize” the pamphlet, which in fact makes no mention of achieving the president’s aims within 100 days. He also disowned a reported second document entitled “One Hundred Things Buhari Will do in 100 days”, which Africa Check could not source. In response to such rebuttals, the Centre for Democracy and Development released an article on Monday arguing: “It is too late for President Buhari to disown the promises, on the basis of which Nigerians voted for him”. In fact, as Oluseun Onigbinde, one of those behind the CDD’s promise-tracking Buhari Meter, noted, in a speech in the UK in February, then candidate Buhari had already dismissed talk of what should be done within 100 days. Why Buhari’s campaign team did not correct the widespread reports of the 100 day claim at an earlier point is not yet clear. Population may grow less patient Of course, meeting the full set of promises attributed to the president would be a tall order for the first 100 days of any government, let alone one shackled by the interests of an old political elite which doesn’t share the president’s distaste for dirty dealings. During his first three months in office, Buhari has focused on launching a multinational force to fight Boko Haram insurgents in the north-east, and on repairing broken relationships with Western partners. He has begun reforms within the opaque state- owned oil company, cancelled unfavourable oil contracts, and started probing public officials, including the former national security adviser Sambo Dasuki. But the president is yet to name a cabinet and has struggled to gain control of a rebellious national assembly. Jihadists continue to occupy some north-eastern territory and are staging bomb attacks on a weekly basis. Kids are still out of school and hospitals are a mess. Even on measures which he could have delivered alone – notably asset declaration – he has stalled. Buhari’s popularity is still palpable, but his honeymoon period will soon be over. With his first 100 days behind him, if he struggles to deliver all that he’s promised them, the population may grow less patient. Allowing people to believe the 100-day promises had been made is not a good start. Eleanor Whitehead is The Economist’s West Africa correspondent, and lives in Lagos. The Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State has recommended Justice Folahanmi Oloyede of Osun State Judiciary to President Muhammadu Buhari for appointment as one of the judges for the proposed special court to handle corruption cases. The chairman of the group, Mr. Adeniyi Sulaiman, said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday. The group said Oloyode, who wrote a petition asking the House of Assembly to impeach Governor Rauf Aregbesola, ibased on allegations of corruption was a bold and honest judge who they said was qualified to be at such court. Sulaiman stated that any judge, who would be appointed to man such a court should be a person of impeccable character, must be bold and courageous to discharge his duties without fear or favour. The statement read, ” It is now clear that most of the judicial officers in the land have soiled their hands for one corrupt practice or the other for failing integrity test conducted by the security agents. “We want to use this opportunity to recommend the courageous serving Judge of the Osun State High Court, Justice Olamide Folahanmi Oloyede to be appointed as one of the judges to man the proposed Anti-Corruption Specialised Court which will be trying the looters of the nation’s treasury. “We also want to say that Justice Oloyede is a woman of virtue, integrity and an upright person with impeccable character. The records are there to be checked for anybody about Justice Folahanmi Oloyede.” www.punchng.com/news/anti-corruption-group-recommends-osun-judge/ |
FORMER registrar of National Business for Technical Education Board, NABTEB and Pro- Chancellor, Governing Council, Igbinedion University, Okada, Professor Olu Aina disclosed yesterday that the late Ooni Oba Sijuwade Olubuse (II) fought the south-west before his death. Professor Aina said he was privilege to hold a private meeting with the Ooni some few days before he died, said that the late Ooni had canvassed support of the South West zone for President Muhammadu Buhari in his desire to re- invent Nigeria, adding that he described President Buhari as a man “God specifically brought as a Messiah to re-start Nigeria. Prof. Aina, a Chief from the source in Ile-Ife, disclosed this in an audience he had with some Ife Kingmakers and Chiefs weekend, as preparations for installation of the next Ooni begins to generate attention, appealed to Kingmakers not to falter in their judgment on who becomes the next Ooni. Professor Aina at the meeting called for great wisdom from the Ife Kingmakers on the need to support a candidate who will continue from where Oba Sijuwade stopped and advance the development of Ife, the Yorubaland and Nigeria in general, counting on the powerful and influential stool of the Ooni to do so. He told the Kingmakers that the Ooni in deep reflection expressed a desire to ensure an end to the marginalization of the south west and believed strongly that the zone should accord the present government strong support while playing very key role in ensuring the progress of Nigeria. He said, “Permit me to share an intimate moment I had with the Ooni a few days before he passed on. On the 9th of July 2015, baba called me and instructed that I should see him urgently. He even rebuffed my attempts to shift the date he set for the meeting which he made compelling. I struggled hard with my very tight schedule to see the Ooni. “Surprisingly, our discussions centered on state of the nation. He told me bluntly that Nigeria should be grateful for having Muhammadu Buhari as President. He talked at length on his worries about Nigeria and the reign of impunity in high places as well as the general breakdown of security across the federation. “He expressed concerns about the dilemmas of the Nigerian youths and the rate of unemployment in Nigeria. At a point, he heaved a heavy sigh and said that God specifically brought President Buhari as a Messiah to save Nigeria! “The Ooni that I knew was never given to talking in vacuum. His reflections were usually sharp on issues. His reeled in deep thoughts, thus making predictions that always turned into clinical reality, mostly on local and national politics. “He, indeed, expressed conviction in the political change in Nigeria and the capacity present government to rebuild the country. I recalled also that he talked extensively on the potentials of the Yoruba to assist in the stability of Nigeria given the mindset of the people and their positive disposition to the national cause. “He prayed that the south-west with their contributions to the success of the 2015 presidential election will leverage on that to return to the center and assist in consolidating governance particularly for the emergence of a new Nigeria. “Although, I had wondered the reasons behind the emphasis the Ooni made on support for the new government, yet, I was not shocked because all along, I knew he has been expressing tremendous respect for the President, touching on integrity and his no-nonsense posturing. He had shared his thought on this with some of us his close children long before the last Presidential election” Prof. Aina who advised them to reflect on the wish by Oba Sijuwade for the south-west to take a leadership position in a bid by the government to revive Nigeria by electing a new Oba with capacity to do so, said, “We will trust in your capacity, good judgment and ability to look for a successor with deep vision, experience, candour, exposure and natural disposition to unite Ife and its neighbouring nations. Ife needs an Ooni with strong leadership spirit to unite the Yorubaland while making the south-west to sustain its enviable contributions to the progress and development of Nigeria. “The late ooni, was noted for his ability to break the barriers of phobia in his style of leadership. He was affable, amenable, open, friendly with people from far and near and well versed in foreign relations. He was a Yoruba leader personified. These are the virtues we should look for in the next Ooni” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/what-ooni-oba-sijuwade-told-me-about-buhari-aina/
