PoliticsEFCC Arrests Abba Moro, Others Over 2014 Immigration by Titilayodeji13(op): 9:09pm On Feb 22, 2016
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday arrested a former Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, over the Nigerian Immigration recruitment scam in which no fewer than 20 job seekers died.
Also arrested by the anti-graft agency were former Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Anaesthesia Nwaobia, and a deputy director who allegedly facilitated the scam.

A source at the commission, who cannot be named because she is not authorised to speak on the matter, told PREMIUM TIMES the three suspects were picked up in the evening.

“They were brought into the commission’s headquarters today and will be arraigned on a 12-count charge in the Federal High Court Abuja on Tuesday,” the source said.

Some of the charges against Mr. Moro and his colleagues include obtaining by false pretence, procurement offences, corrupt practices and money laundering.

At least nine job seekers died on March 15, 2014 at the Abuja National Stadium while scrambling to secure seats for a recruitment test into the Nigerian Immigration Service.

The stampede ensued after the over 200,000 job seekers scrambled through a poorly organized barricade at the stadium.

In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, four applicants died from the stampede while 12 others sustained injuries and were rushed to Rivers government-owned Braithwaite Memorial Hospital.

After the March 15 tragedy, several Nigerians demanded the resignation or dismissal of Mr. Moro and the Comptroller-General of Immigration, David Parradang, as well as their criminal prosecution for involuntary homicide.

They were accused of putting in place a sham recruitment process that enabled the interior ministry to extort at least N520 million in compulsory levy imposed on applicants.

The minister, who initially blamed impatience and refusal by applicants to abide by instructions for the tragedy, later accepted responsibility for the incident.
He, however, refused to step down.
Speaking on a Channels TV’s breakfast programme, Sunrise, on October 20, 2014, Mr. Moro made it clear he would not resign, saying he would rather stay put in office to clear the mess caused by the incidence.
“The point at which we are now is not about resignation. That time has gone,” Mr. Morro said in response to a question over why he refused to quit.
“At the time (people were calling for his resignation), I think emotions were very high. I was in the eye of a storm.

“At that time, a lot of options were on the table… The issue is do you resign or do you stay to sort out the problem that have been created?
“I decided that staying and mopping up the mess caused by the lack of proper implementation of our plans is better. That’s the point we are now.”
The minister said Nigerians should consider the tragedy as an accident which he too did not plan for or envisage.
“I also have families. I didn’t set out on that journey knowing that accident would occur that would lead to the death of human beings.
“We took everything into proper perspective. If we had succeeded, a few Nigerians would have congratulated us for the job well done.”

PoliticsReports Of Osinbajo’s Valentine’s Day Trip False, Mischievous – Presidency by Titilayodeji13(op): 9:03pm On Feb 22, 2016
The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, has debunked rumours of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s foreign trip to celebrate Valentine’s Day with wife, Dolapo.
Mr. Akande said in a statement that the couple was in Abuja on February 14, and never travelled to any country to mark the day.
“Our attention has been drawn to some erroneous reports and claims on the internet regarding the whereabouts of the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, and his wife, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo on February 14, 2016 – Valentine’s Day.
“For the avoidance of any doubt, the vice president and his wife were in Abuja on the said date.
“In fact, they both attended worship service earlier in the day at the Aso Rock Villa Chapel alongside several other Nigerians, including my humble self.
“Claims that the vice president and his wife spent Valentine’s Day anywhere outside the country is both false and mischievous.
“Such incorrect and untrue reports should be utterly dismissed and completely ignored,” Mr. Akande said.

CrimeMan Tries To Turn Himself In For Reward Money, Gets Arrested by Titilayodeji13(op): 3:46am On Feb 06, 2016
A string of robberies in the Detroit, Michigan area had residence on high alert, that is until 58-year-old Terrence Robinson turned himself in. W Warren Ave and McKinley Street in Detroit are no strangers to crime, but in the months of October and November there were several burglaries that had one thing in common –  a tall can of Old English Malt Liquor was left behind at the scene. They knew they had a serial robber on their hands.Several alerts went out from Crimestopper asking residents to stay alert and to call the phone number listed if they had any information leading to the capture of the thief. With a $5000 reward on the line, they received several calls from residents in the area. But it was one specific call that got the authorities attention.
On December 22, Crimestopper information line received a tip from a man stating that he knew who the man was that was robbing homes in the neighborhood. According to police, the man insisted that he received something in writing guaranteeing him the $5000 reward. The Crimestopper team obliged and emailed the man the agreement. That’s when Robinson called the Crimestopper number once again to reveal the location of the criminal. When police arrived, Robinson opened the door with a huge smile expecting to receive his check but instead, he was handcuffed by police.
“Terrence Robinson look shocked and confused when we cuffed him,” said police Lieut. Jamieson Caldwell. “As soon as we got him he said, ‘So do I still get the reward money or what?’ I told him no and he threatened to sue me because he said he has the agreement in writing. What a nut!”
Robinson was taken to the county jail and booked on charges of petty larceny, breaking and entering and several other charges. Robinson tested positive for crack cocaine and opiates. During the interrogation, Robinson told authorities he would not speak until his attorney arrived. Five minutes later, he introduced himself, Terrence Robinson, as his attorney to the police. He notified the police that he will be representing himself in a lawsuit against the department for his $5000 reward money. His court date is scheduled for January 28.

NYSCNYSC Orders Staff To Declare Assets by Titilayodeji13(op): 4:04pm On Jan 28, 2016
The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC has ordered its personnel whose assets declaration dates are due to make such declaration immediately in line with the code of conduct for public officers.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi gave the directive at the opening ceremony of its 2016 Annual Management Conference held Thursday.

He said the NYSC Management had been very consistent in the enforcement of periodic assets declaration by members of staff as well as ensuring strict adherence to policy guidelines in all aspects of the scheme’s operations.

Reviewing the activities of the scheme, Olawumi recalled with delight the participation of corps members in the successful conduct of the 2015 General Elections.

“I therefore wish to commend the political class, security agencies, and the electorate for their support to Corps members during the exercise. We assure all Nigerians that given such opportunity in the future, we will not disappoint the nation,” he added.

He also said the scheme, through its Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD), launched a holistic medical outreach targeted at the rural poor nationwide last year.

The DG added that the programme would be sustained, and would especially be used in assisting the country to contain the spread of lassa fever.

Olawumi called on state governments as well as other international and private organizations to support the HIRD achieve its objective of contributing to quality healthcare delivery to all nooks and crannies of the country.

He also urged stakeholders, especially corporate bodies and individual philantropists, to assist towards sustaining the NYSC Hope Alive Initiative which was introduced with the aim of providing succor to corps members who suffer permanent disability during the service year.

The DG told the gathering that the scheme had installed latest security chips that could track a distressed caller easily, and went on to advise corps members to always call the NYSC Distress Call Centre whenever the need arises.

He thanked all host communities and security agencies nationwide as well as other stakeholders, including the Delta State Government, for their support towards the welfare and safety of corps members.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, NYSC Directorate Headquarters Venerable Temitope Ajayi said the AMC would generate ideas and formulate new strategies with the aim of enhancing productivity and service delivery for effective management of the youth.

“The focus of this conference is, therefore, to brainstorm and come up with practicable solutions that will reposition and promote the ideals of the scheme in the face of the present challenges of the operating environment,” he added.

CultureMonarchs Who Passed On In 2015 by Titilayodeji13(op): 10:45pm On Jan 23, 2016
The year 2015 undoubtedly went down as a very eventful one in the history of Nigeria. Aside witnessing a landmark general election that saw to the removal of an incumbent president for the very first time in Nigeria’s history, the year also witnessed remarkably the passing on of a good number of influential monarchs across the ethno-political divides of the country. Dorcas Egede takes another look at the year, highlighting some of the frontline monarchs that joined their ancestors in it.

Alhaji Muhammad Kabiru Danbaba, Emir of Gusau, Zamfara State-March 2015

Born on 15th October, 1927 into the royal family of the renowned founder of the Gusau Kingdom, Mallam Sambo Dan Ashafa, Alhaji Muhammad Kabiru Danbaba OFR became the Magajin Sabon Gari in 1974 at the age of 47. He held that title for 10 years, following which he was made district Head of Gusau in 1984, a position he held for 13 years. Because of his efficiency and zeal in office, he was upgraded in 1997 to the level of a second class Emir, and later to the rank of a first class Emir in 2000.

Emir Muhammad Kabiru Danbaba died on the 5th of March, 2015, following a protracted illness and hospitalisation. He is survived by 37 children and an undisclosed number of grandchildren.

Oba Stephen Suulade Adedugbe Jibubokun II, Jegun of Ile-Oluji, Ondo State-June 2015

A graduate of Kingston College of Technology, England, where he studied Engineering and Purdue University, Indiana, USA, where he obtained a Master’s degree, Oba (Engr) Stephen Suulade Adedugbe Jibubokun was born on the 15th February, 1938.

Following an illustrious career as an engineer, during which he was member of several professional bodies at home and abroad, and rose to become Assistant Director in the Federal Ministry of Surveys, the then Engr. Stephen Suulade Adedugbe ascended the throne of his fore-fathers as the Jegun of Ile-Oluji in 1990.

During his 25-year reign, Oba Adedugbe contributed immensely to the development of Ile-Oluji, seeing to the establishment of a Federal Polytechnic in the town, as well as standing by Gov. Olusegun Mimiko during his 22-month legal battle to regain his mandate from the late Gov Olusegun Agagu.

He survived a youth protest calling for his removal in 2013, following allegations that he had diverted public funds.

Oba Adedugbe passed on in his sleep at about 4 a.m. on Saturday June 4, 2015.

Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II, Ooni of Ife, Osun State-July 2015

The late Òoni of Ifè, Oba Okùnadé Síjuwadé was born into one of the ruling houses in Ilé-Ifè on January 1, 1930. He studied at Abeokuta Grammar School and Oduduwa College in Ilé-Ifè, and later at Northampton College, United Kingdom, where he studied Business Management. At age 30, he became a manager in Leventis, a Greek-Nigerian conglomerate. In 1963, he became Sales Director of the state-owned National Motor in Lagos. His business focus took a new dimension in 1964, after he spotted a business opportunity during his visit to the Soviet Union. He thus formed a company to distribute Soviet-built vehicles and equipment in Nigeria, which became the nucleus of a widespread business empire. Sijuwade also invested in real estate in his home town of Ilé-Ifè.

He became the 50th Òòni of Ifè in 1980, assuming the royal title, Olúbùse II and going down as one of the wealthiest monarchs of his time. He was coronated on the 6th of December, 1980 in a ceremony attended by top-class monarchs including the Emir of Kano, the Oba of Benin, Amayanabo of Opobo and Olu of Warri, as well as representatives of Queen Elizabeth of England.

The late monarch was a practising Christian, who built a Foursquare Church inside his palace. In 2013, he shocked the majority of his very traditional subjects, when he announced his decision to relinquish the traditional title of Ogiame, on the ground that it derived from a river goddess. This sparked a crisis, with the people giving him an option to either retain the title or vacate the royal stool, which he occupied in trust for the entire Iwere land (Itsekiri Kingdom). The people’s will eventually prevailed, as the king eventually capitulated and reverted to the status quo.

30 years after, Buhari rewards Golden Eaglets team that won maiden U-17 FIFA championship

Thirty years after emerging victorious in the FIFA U-17 tournament in China, the victorious Golden Eaglets team was on Thursday rewarded by President Muhammadu Buhari with a cash gift of N2 million to each player, while their coaches were given N1.5 million each.
The team won the trophy in 1985, when Mr. Buhari was military Head of State, and he reportedly promised to honour the team for its victory.
However his tenure was cut short by a military coup, thereby making it impossible for him to fulfill his promise.
On Thursday, the president thanked God for keeping him alive to fulfill his promise to the team.
Mr. Buhari, at a reception to honour the team and other victorious Nigerian athletes in recent competitions, said the reward given to them was not payment for their services to the country but a “token of appreciation”.
The U-17 team that won the world championship last year were also rewarded with N1.2 million each while the chief coach, Emmanuel Amuneke was given 900,000.00 and his assistants got 600,000.00 each.
The team secretary and medical team got 300,000.00 each, while other officials got N200,000.00 each.

Pastor Adeboye's prophecies for 2016 are no different from his previous ones - he has managed to keep everything fuzzed up and has avoided being specific so as not to incriminate himself in the future. However, there is one item on his list that requires scrutiny because I believe it shows Pastor Adeboye to be a manipulative person. I shall return to this in a moment.

Pastor AdeboyePastor Adeboye

First, let us build a quick picture of the man. Pastor Adeboye is probably the most influential pastor in Nigeria. His church has branches in almost 100 countries around the world, with an estimated 14,000 churches in Nigeria alone. The Redeemed Camp is responsible for perennial traffic congestion on the Lagos-Ibadan motorway because of where it is situated and the sheer size of the congregation that worships there. Whether the church has done enough to forestall this problem and alleviate the sufferings of road users is a subject for another day. Pastor Adeboye's fund raising methods are a cause for concern. He announced plans in 2013 to build a church auditorium of approximately 3km in length (http://dailypost.ng/2013/08/14/three-kilometer-auditorium-angry-nigerians-blast-adeboye-say-n1billion-per-person-donation-is-criminal/). To fund the project, he told his followers: "We need N1 billion from ten people . . . We also need N100 million from those who can afford it. Please see my secretary." How many hard-working people with unquestionable source of income would dole out money on a project like that which will not yield any returns for them? This behaviour encourages corruption - the thieves who steal our commonwealth will see this as an act of buying penance from God. Pastor Adeboye is importunate - he never tires of using mental gimmicks to persuade his members to give him money. Only last month, he was reported to have told them: "Let me tell you the truth, the only reason we still take offerings is to get you out of poverty. When you give offerings you’re sending money to heaven." A few years ago, he claimed that he drove his car without fuel from Ore to Lagos to a thunderous applause from his congregation. It beggars belief that anyone would believe this story. To complete the picture, take a look at his 2015 prophecies and decide for yourselves whether he made any ground-breaking predictions or if he just played safe by refusing to make specific statements. (https://secure.saharareporters.com/2015/01/02/end-year-prophecies-ijabla-raymond#.VKbHn0sJtN4.wordpress). Notice that he had prophesied: "Daddy (referring to God) says all over the world insurgencies will be considerately weakened." The terrorist activities of jihadi groups like ISIS, Boko Haram (BH) and al-Shabab in 2015 do not support this prediction. This observation alone completely invalidates his claim of speaking the mind of God.

Let's return to the 2016 prophecies which can be found on the church's website: http://rccg.org/prophesies-for-year-2016/. Pastor Adeboye prophesied that, "a new sexually transmitted disease will surface." But he does not disclose that he received this revelation from newspapers and medical journals. British researchers announced late last year the discovery of a "new" sexually transmitted disease (STD) called mycoplasma genitalium (http://www.nhs.uk/news/2015/11November/Pages/New-sexually-transmitted-infection-MG-may-be-widespread.aspx). It is worth noting that pastor Adeboye does not give the name of the new STD and its causative organism like researchers always do. Does God whom he claims to speak for not know this information? Why does he not specify where, how and when the disease will surface? How bizarre for an omni-benevolent God to announce the emergence of a new disease but not the cure? Curiously, God was also silent about BH and the abducted Chibok girls, the fall in the price of crude oil and its effect on our economy, the agitation for the state of Biafra, climate change, the conflict in Syria. Pastor Adeboye's prophecies portray God as someone who is always silent on the issues with real implications for our daily existence. That, of course, is based on the assumption that God exists and that He speaks to the pastor. I could never understand how someone can know the mind of an entity they cannot even prove exists. What is obvious is that pastor Adeboye, like the rest of his fellow prophets, relies on the BBC, CNN and other news media to formulate his prophecies.
The reason this situation bothers me is because literally tens of millions of Nigerians believe that God speaks through this man. Accordingly, the choices they make in life are guided by every word he speaks. Collectively, Adeboye and his fellow pastopreneurs have turned a generation of Nigerians into magical thinkers and have destroyed critical thinking. Even our universities and other centres of learning are not immune from their destructive influence - believe it or not there are professors who believe that prayers can make a car drive without fuel just as pastor Adeboye proposed; that diseases can be caused by evil spirits; that witches and wizards are responsible for infertility; and so on.

Thankfully, the days of lying to Nigerians are drawing to a close. Information is the greatest weapon against ignorance, fear, superstitions and exploitations. Nigerians now have access to the internet and can easily cross check facts. By this time next year, we would know if a new STD has been discovered and if indeed God speaks to pastor Adeboye.

CrimeTwo University Students From Ghana & Nigeria Suspended In UK Over Jollof Rice by Titilayodeji13(op): 8:04pm On Dec 24, 2015
Two students of College of South West
London in UK have suspended
indefinitely for a fight which ended with
one of them going home with two broken
teeth—and a red eye.
The students-Tracy Osei Assibey from
Ghana and Lateefa Oyedepo are reported
to have gotten into a fierce medieval fight
which started from their shared
apartment’s kitchen and ended up on the
streets.
Apparently, Lateefah was peacefully
cooking her jolloff rice when Tracy
commented that, she was doing it the
wrong way and that she shouldn’t use
the fat grain easy cook rice.
Lateefah then replied that how Nigerians
cook jollof is the right way since
Ghanaians as usual stole jollof rice from
them—adding that, Ghanaian jollof rice
tastes disgusting compared to the big
rice Nigerian one.
That’s how it started—the BBC says,
things got heated and soon the two
students starting pulling each others
weaves, followed by heavy punches.
For about 2 and half hours, the students
fought each other and descended down
stairs from their 5th floor apartment with
the fight—until one of the college’s
lecturer from Sierra Leone, Mrs Adelaide
Walters jumped in-between them to pull
them apart.
At a disciplinary meeting which led to
their suspension over the weekend, Mrs
Adelaide Walters who was present as a
witness to the fight stated that, it is
absurd for two students who would
possible become future leaders to fight
over the origin and cooking of jollof rice—
especially when both of them are wrong
about the origin and the cooking method.
Mrs Walters indicated to the hearing
board that, Jolloff rice originates from
her country-Sierra Leone and the way
both Ghanaians and Nigerians cook it is
wrong but she does not go about fighting
anyone.
The third year students have been
suspended indefinitely by the university.
