Our father land is ruled by a bunch of old politicians who are too sick to attend to their duties and then delegate their duties to other old politicians. We are not going to make the same mistakes again. Hundreds of young Nigerians marched on the country’s parliament on Tuesday, calling for lawmakers to remove age barriers on political posts, including the presidency. Nigeria’s 1999 constitution stipulates that the president has to be at least 40, while senators and state governors have to be aged 35 or above. Young Nigerians march to protest against age barriers on political posts in Abuja, on July 25, 2017. Hundreds of young Nigerians marched towards the country’s parliament on Tuesday, calling for lawmakers to remove age barriers on political posts, including the presidency. Nigeria’s 1999 constitution stipulates that the president has to be at least 40, while senators and state governors have to be aged 35 or above But with an increasingly young demographic in Africa’s most populous nation and a majority of voters (55.4 percent) in the 18-35 age group, the restriction is seen as unfair. About 500 protesters, wearing white T-shirts and brandishing placards proclaiming “#NotTooYoungToRun”, marched two kilometres (1.5 miles) to the National Assembly. A sit-in was planned outside the parliament building until lawmakers vote on a constitutional amendment to lower the age. Protest leader Samson Itodo said they needed a two-thirds majority in the 109-seat senate and the 360-seat House of Representatives to vote in their favour. “For us, we are saying remove the age limit completely. If you are eligible to vote, you should be eligible to run for office,” he told AFP. “That is full franchise. But what we currently enjoy is partial franchise.” Nigeria’s current head of state is President Muhammadu Buhari, a 74-year-old former military ruler who has been out of the country on indefinite medical leave since May 7. Buhari’s age is not an exception in Africa, where many elderly presidents remain in power, including Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe, who is still president at the age of 93. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/07/young-nigerians-push-removal-political-a

A new book coming out in September says the former King of Spain, Juan Carlos, is a sex addict and has bedded thousands of women even after marrying Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark. Ex-King Carlos, with his wife Sophia: new book says he was a sex addict, sleeping with over 2,154 women in 18 years The explosive book says the retired European monarch had an astonishing 2,154 sexual partners between 1976 and 1994 after he allegedly became estranged from his wife, to whom he is still married. The 79-year-old abdicated the throne in 2014, making way for his son Felipe VI, who began a tour of Great Britain on Wednesday. The new book, Juan Carlos I: The King of 5,000 Lovers was written by Amadeo Martínez Ingles. It will be published in September, according to a summary published in The Times. It claims he was already a prolific lovemaker prior to his 1962 union with the King of Greece’s daughter, to whom he is still married. He reportedly slept with 332 partners while at military academy as a young man, “which is good for any actor specialising in porn films: four per week,” the book notes. Juan Carlos became King in 1975, 13 years into his marriage, but was allegedly found by his Queen in a compromising position with actress Sara Montiel a year later. Montiel denies there was any affair. Since then, according to the book, he has put more than 2,000 notches on his royal bedpost. His alleged lovers include Barbara Rey, a former Miss World contestant and Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, a German philanthropist. Rey is alleged to have received $3m (£2.8m, $3.5m) from the Spanish secret service to deny the affair. She says she has not received such a payment. In 2015, the Spanish Supreme Court dismissed the paternity claim of the 47-year-old daughter of Belgian governess Liliane Sartiau. Juan Carlos’ reputation was damaged when he took an elephant hunting trip in Botswana in April 2012 at the height of Spain’s financial crisis. He handed over the throne to his son two years later, saying that the new generation must be at the forefront… younger people with new energies.” The Spanish Royal Household did not respond to The Times when asked for comment. *Originally published by International Business Times Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/07/ex-spanish-king-carlos-sleeps-2154-women-new-book-says/

Though the flood that ravaged some parts of Ibadan, Oyo State capital, in the early hours of Tuesday has come and gone, it has left hollowness in the lives of some families. While some residents are thankful to God that it did not leave on its trail deaths like the one of August 26, 2011, the victims don’t actually know whether to be joyful for not dying in the furious flood. Apart from the fact that some of the victims are homeless, their future is uncertain. Many of them claimed that unless urgent help comes their way, they may have to face hard times from hunger, poverty and unclothedness. As of the time of filing this story, some of them were counting their losses. When Sunday Vanguard went to speak with residents on the disaster, it was found that, in Wofun area of Ibadan, the flood delayed students of Ark of God International School, Lasting Glory and some public schools in that part of the metropolis from starting their National Examination Council, NECO, and Junior WAEC. The proprietress of the Ark of God, Mrs Abiola Bayonle, said the flood delayed students in the area for several hours. She narrated, “At Adeyipo area, there is an extension of road going on. So, it was the road extension work that did not allow free passage of water and this resulted in flooding. That day, the students had NECO and Junior WAEC examinations. The students were to write English Language. The Junior WAEC was to start at 9am while the NECO exam was scheduled for 10am. “At 8:30am, my students called to inform me that they could not cross the river. As time ticked very close to their examination time, they started crying. There were about 30 of them. After they had stayed there for about two hours, the flood subsided but still nobody could enter it. I too had to risk it. There were trucks crossing the river when the force had reduced. Some people hanged to the trucks to cross the river.” “But for the students, we had to hire elderly people to put them on their back like babies to cross the overflowed river”. Miss Abimbola Ajayi, one of the affected JSS students, said, “I was very afraid when we got to the overflowed river. It was so serious. No one could cross.. We and some students of Ark of God International School and other schools around waited impatiently for the flood to subside. We waited for about two hours. If we did not have a paper for that day, we would have gone back home. Some students who wanted to write NECO were also with us. It got to a point that some of us were crying because we knew the time of exam was already approaching and there was no certainty that the river would calm down. “Later, some adults were mounting us on their back to help us cross to the other side of the river. I wasn’t myself throughout the examination period. Since that day, anytime I see the cloud gathering, I am afraid”. At Olodo and Orogun areas, some churches were submerged. The wall of a Celestial Church of Christ at UI Second Gate, Orogun was pulled down by the flood. Gbekuba, Onipepeye, Bodija, Omi Adio, among other places in the state capital, were also affected. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/06/caught-ibadan-flood-horrors-saw-hell-live-direct-30-students-going-ssce/

Moshood noted that the first autopsy report was not rejected by the police, but that it was inconclusive, noting that it was why the Inspector General of Police had to order for another autopsy to be done. He added that the report does not exonerate the suspect in question and the general public should dissociate themselves from the conflicting reports. His words: “I want to say that we did not reject the first autopsy report. The first autopsy report was not conclusive. “In fact, Dr. Paul Jubril (doctor that conducted first autopsy) equally witnessed the second autopsy report examination. “Dr. Jubril was the person that did the first one that I showed you and he was present when the second one was conducted by Dr. Wilson Ayewu and we equally had Augustine Okechukwu of Basic Rights Enlightenment Foundation at the second round of the autopsy and it was done at the National Hospital, Abuja. “The report of the second autopsy is not exonerating the suspect and that is what is important. The prosecution will still go ahead. We should disabuse our mind of any conflicting view as to whether Police is out to exonerate the principal suspect in this regard.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/06/generator-fumes-killed-joy-odama-police/ |
BENIN—A Benin high court, presided over by Justice Alero Edodo-Eruaga, yesterday, sentenced one Mrs Regina Osarieme, a mother of four, to 15 years imprisonment for human trafficking. The trafficker was alleged to have recruited a 16-year-old girl, who is in Senior Secondary 2 at Okha Secondary School, Benin, and promised to take her to Russia. Before embarking on the journey, the victim was requested to pay a registration fee of N50,000 and two bails of wrapper to the accused. The accused, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, hails from Ewega village in Orhionwon Local Government Area of Edo State. She was said to have recruited the girl through an agent called Anthony. A statement by NAPTIP Zonal Commander, Nduka Nwanw-nenesaid: “As soon as the victim was recruited, she was taken to a popular motor transporter in Benin, where she boarded a vehicle to Lagos and from there to Cotonou and then Mali. Girl “In Mali, the victim realised that she was not taken to Russia as promised and bluntly refused to engage in prostitution. Her new Madam, called Princess, forcefully collected her pants, finger nails and hair and forced her to take oath. “Subsequently, she was forced into prostitution and all her earnings were collected by Madam Princess. “An initial attempt by the victim’s mother, Mrs Matilda Enabulele, to rescue the daughter was rebuffed by Madam Princess, who claimed that she bought the victim for N300,000 and that she has to be paid back that amount before the victim could be released. “The victim later escaped and was rescued by NAPTIP.” However, Justice Edodo-Eruaga, found the accused guilty and sentenced her to five years imprisonment on each of the three counts. The sentence is to run concurrently. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/06/16-year-old-girl-sold-n300000-earns-mother-four-15-years-imprisonment/ |
Leopold was the founder and sole owner of the Congo Free State and all its people, a private project undertaken on his own behalf.[citation needed] He used explorer Henry Morton Stanley to help him lay claim to the Congo, an area now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At the Berlin Conference of 1884–1885, the colonial nations of Europe authorized his claim by committing the Congo Free State to improving the lives of the native inhabitants. From the beginning, however, Leopold ignored these conditions and millions of Congolese inhabitants, including children, were mutilated and killed.[citation needed] He ran the Congo using the mercenary Force Publique for his personal enrichment. He used great sums of the money from this exploitation for public and private construction projects in Belgium during this period. He donated the private buildings to the state before his death. Leopold extracted a fortune from the Congo, initially by the collection of ivory, and after a rise in the price of rubber in the 1890s, by forced labour from the natives to harvest and process rubber. Under his regime millions of Congolese people died; modern estimates range from 1 million to 15 million, with a consensus growing around 10 million. Human rights abuses under his regime contributed significantly to these deaths. Reports of deaths and abuse led to a major international scandal in the early 20th century, and Leopold was ultimately forced by the Belgian government to relinquish control of the colony to the civil administration in 1908. Leopold amassed a huge personal fortune by exploiting the natural resources of the Congo. At first, ivory was exported, but this did not yield the expected levels of revenue. When the global demand for rubber exploded, attention shifted to the labor-intensive collection of sap from rubber plants. Abandoning the promises of the Berlin Conference in the late 1890s, the Free State government restricted foreign access and extorted forced labor from the natives. Abuses, especially in the rubber industry, included the forced labor of the native population, beatings, widespread killing, and frequent mutilation when the production quotas were not met. Missionary John Harris of Baringa was so shocked by what he had come across that he wrote to Leopold's chief agent in the Congo, saying: "I have just returned from a journey inland to the village of Insongo Mboyo. The abject misery and utter abandon is positively indescribable. I was so moved, Your Excellency, by the people's stories that I took the liberty of promising them that in future you will only kill them for crimes they commit." Estimates of the death toll range from 1 million to 15 million, since accurate records were not kept. Historians Louis and Stengers in 1968 stated that population figures at the start of Leopold's control are only "wild guesses", and that attempts by E. D. Morel and others to determine a figure for the loss of population were "but figments of the imagination". Mutilated people from the Congo Free State Adam Hochschild devotes a chapter of his book King Leopold's Ghost to the problem of estimating the death toll. He cites several recent lines of investigation, by anthropologist Jan Vansina and others, that examine local sources (police records, religious records, oral traditions, genealogies, personal diaries, and "many others" , which generally agree with the assessment of the 1919 Belgian government commission: roughly half the population perished during the Free State period. Hochshild points out that since the first official census by the Belgian authorities in 1924 put the population at about 10 million, these various approaches suggest a rough estimate of a total of 10 million dead.Smallpox epidemics and sleeping sickness also devastated the disrupted population. By 1896, African trypanosomiasis had killed up to 5,000 Africans in the village of Lukolela on the Congo River. The mortality statistics were collected through the efforts of British consul Roger Casement, who found, for example, only 600 survivors of the disease in Lukolela in 1903. leopold killed an average of 15 million africans while Adolf Hitler killed 10 million Europeans. yet only the latter is known https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopold_II_of_Belgium
