Unbeaten in seven home league matches vs Chelsea (W3, D4) Manchester United are buoyant after an excellent midweek win (2-1 vs PSG). However, they are winless in the last three Premier League (PL) matches (D2, L1) to be played after European involvements, conceding first inside the opening half-hour each time. Should the ‘Red Devils’ lose, they will have done so in three consecutive top-flight home games for the first time since the 1978/79 campaign. Overall, they are on a run of four PL home games without victory (D2, L2 - GF 5, GA 12), with 25% of their goals conceded therein coming from the penalty spot. Three of the matches saw them trail by one goal at the 15-minute mark. Chelsea manager Frank Lampard oversaw a 4-0 defeat in this fixture last term, for a traumatic league debut as the Blues’ manager. At present, his all-time PL record vs other permanent managers representing a former club since the start of 2019/20 is poor: W1, D3, L4. Five (62.5%) of those matches saw the host of the day score first inside 30 minutes. Additionally, Chelsea conceded an average of 1.29 goals after the hour mark across the matches drawn/lost in the above sequence. However, the damage has been done much earlier across Chelsea’s last three PL away games drawn/lost overall, with the ‘Blues’ conceding an average of 2.67 goals before HT (1-30’: 1.67) across that trio. Players to watch: Three (W2, L1) of Man United’s last five competitive games (including the midweek win vs PSG) have seen Bruno Fernandes net a penalty and give his side a one-goal lead at the time scored. Finally in form, Timo Werner netted a double inside the opening half-hour of Chelsea’s last league game. In turn, four of his last five goals have been scored within that early period. Hot stat: Man Utd’s all-time PL home record vs Chelsea (Apr 1993-present) is: W11, D11, L6, with all of those victories seeing at least one half won/lost by a 1-0 scoreline. After opposing results in the Champions League midweek, Barcelona and Real Madrid now engage in the 245th competitive El Clásico, with the hosts looking to square the La Liga (LL) ledger to 73-73. However for the first time since April 2003, both teams enter this world-renowned derby on the back of defeat in the previous LL round. Barcelona have recorded just one goal across their last two LL fixtures, the first time in a stretch of 12 LL games in which they have done so, in what is just the third time since the start of 2019/20 that they have recorded two consecutive winless LL encounters. A sole victory from their last five LL home Clásico clashes (D3, L1) - despite opening the scoring four times - also fails to inspire, particularly when Barcelona have scored just one second-half goal this LL campaign (excluding own goals). That stands in stark contrast with visiting Madrid, who enjoy an aggregate 4-0 scoreline across their five LL second halves this season. However their shock defeat to Cádiz was the first time in four LL games in which they did not win the second half. Furthermore, Real Madrid will be concerned to have fallen to consecutive defeats as a favourite (in all competitions) for the first time since the end of the 2018/19 season, even if both were by just a one-goal margin. Players to watch: In addition to Barcelona’s last opening goal in LL competition, Philippe Coutinho also scored first in the 2018/19 home LL meeting with Real Madrid. Vinícius Júnior has scored in three of his last four appearances for Madrid - opening the scoring in two LL fixtures during that period - as well as netting the fastest Champions League goal by a substitute (15 seconds) since at least 2006/07. Hot stat: One team has led at the end of both halves in just three of the last 13 El Clásicos in all competitions. West Ham United have recovered from back-to-back defeats at the start of the Premier League (PL) season, and have now gone three matches unbeaten against strong competition in Wolves, Leicester, and Tottenham (W2, D1). That run will be tested here, as they’ve lost nine straight H2Hs against Manchester City, conceding 3.33 goals on average across those. At home, the ‘Hammers’ opened with an uninspired 2-0 defeat this season, but have since won three straight competitive matches here by a margin of at least three goals. They are yet to concede a first-half goal at home this season, sporting a 5-0 accumulated goal difference across four first halves. Again, that will be tested, as City have been in front at HT in five straight H2Hs held here, outscoring the home side 12-1. City, meanwhile, got their shaky PL start (W2, D1, L1) back on track with a narrow 1-0 win in the last round. That was the first time in eight PL matches that the total goals tally was less than two, and their last ten PL fixtures actually averaged 3.7 total goals. They’ve scored at least four goals in five straight visits here, and notably, averaged 3.53 total goals away from home last season. The visitors have won whilst overcoming a -1.5 handicap in seven of their last nine wins against West Ham, and against all teams they’ve done so in 21 of their last 28 PL victories. However they’ve been vulnerable defensively, with both teams scoring in three of City’s four PL matches so far. Players to watch: Jarrod Bowen has three goals across West Ham’s last three PL matches, while red-hot Raheem Sterling has four goals in his last two visits here, and four goals across his last three competitive matches for City. Hot steak: City haven’t witnessed a goalless first half in 15 straight PL matches.
