I fully support a return of fuel subsidy to Nigeria. Here is how I'll explain it to a primary six pupil. If you don't understand this, then our politicians will just keep sharing our wealth amongst themselves while we wallow in poverty.

Imagine that you had a big Mango tree in your compound and that tree produced much mangoes. You decide to pluck and sell the mangoes but you have kids and family members living with you, you'll definitely put some aside for your household consumption and then take the rest to the market for sale.

In the same way, Nigeria produces about 2m barrels per day of crude. Government should remove say 500,000 barrels for local refining and consumption and sell that to dangote at 50% while they export the remaining 1.5m barrels at international prices for foreign exchange.

Dangote then refines the 500,000 barrels set aside for local consumption and then sells/distributes it locally at 50% of the current prices of petrol and other products derived therefrom. Simple.

Anybody telling you that this model is not possible is simply trying to deceive you so that they can continue sharing and chopping our money.

The only thing the common man benefits from Nigerian government is subsidy. A mother that harvests her mangoes and takes everything to the market without setting some aside for her children is a bad mother. As oil producers, we must derive direct benefits from our resources. Anything Short of this is corruption and grand deception.

Good analysis, I have always said government is wrong to impose 100% subsidy on the masses.

The so called money they said they saved from the subsidy that was given to governors, are they not more corrupt now. And they are all in APC, so no agency can hold them accountable. The one that stole 90 billion from his state , is he not contesting for senate and the EFCC can’t touch him because he belongs to the ruling party. No APC governor will be held accountable for chopping the subsidy saving giving to them. If that 90 billion had been used to partial subsidized fuel for the people of that state, it will benefit thousands of families than only one man and his family chopping 90 billion.

I am voting for Atiku for this policy of subsiding production of fuel locally.

APC people don’t understand, Atiku is talking about subsidizing production of fuel not consumption. They have air in their brains, so they will never understand. Let’s vote for Atiku so government can help the masses to survive. A government that imposes 100% subsidy on its citizens is like a father that refuses to help his children, saying that anyone that can survive should survive and anyone that can’t survive should die. That is a very wicked father/goverment.

Atiku has really scored a huge political point with this subsidy issue, I was at a football game today and people were really debating the matter. Some said they could eat and take care of extended family when there was subsidy on fuel, now he removed subsidy because of corruption, they can’t feed themselves talkless of taking care of extended family. Yet the politicians who were the people involved in subsidy corruption are still getting rich and enjoying themselves from the subsidy saving . They want the subsidy back before they die from suffering.

I voted for Obi in 2023 and I honestly think Obi should sit this one out and support Atiku to remove APC from Aso rock. He will not get the number of votes he got the last time, many people I know who voted Obi the last time are either voting for Atiku this time or not voting at all. Why would someone even short change his region by promising to do only a single term of 4 years just because of power, he is still young and up coming, he can contest many more times. I support Atiku on the issue of subsidy, the masses who are suffering should not bear the 100% burden of subsidy remover, something tangible has to be done for them, not all these talks of CNG or electric okada, it has no impact on the suffering they are going through at the moment. Some people will say on the long run, the subsidy remover will benefit Nigeria. With the state of the economy, many people will die before the see the benefits of the “long run”.

On this basis alone , I will not vote for Obi this time and vote for Atiku. May God help us all….

Ps- Atiku should call local refiners to a meeting if he wins and let them suggest incentives they will need to reduce prices. Even if the government can bear a percentage of the cost of producing fuel, it will go a long way to help the people and the economy.

I don’t support of old subsidy scheme that was full of corruption and government have been unable to bring them to justice because they all belong to the same circle. If they had the courage to fight the corruption in the subsidy scheme, the masses would have been the beneficiaries of such courage. But all governments have proven to be cowards cause they know the people involved.

I believe incentives such as tax cuts to local refiners only can have a downward effect on prices. Is not all about money is excess crude account and the poor can’t feed in their country. What happened to the welfare responsibility of government. 100% subsidy remover is what am against.

Nigerians must learn to hold their Governors and leaders accountable. Weaponised poverty, via subsidy in virtually all sectors of socio-economic economic life, is not the way forward.

It will never make us a developed nation. We need SME proliferation. World class education to produce World class solutions providers, industrialisation, the capacity to manufacture most of what we need like Japan and China etc.

Subsidies of the Naira, education , petrol, electricity etal can never, in a thousand years, achieve that for us . Leaders are merely using those to keep Nigerians underdeveloped and happy with having nothing.

But the governor that stole 90billion, the EFCC have not been able to touch him because he belongs to the ruling party, so how will Nigerians hold the governor accountable?

The people enjoying the savings from the subsidy remover are the governors. They have become more corrupt and stealing the money anyhow. The common man on the street has not benefited from the subsidy remover. As long as the governors stealing the savings from the subsidy remover are in APC , nothing will happen. One stole 90billion from the subsidy remover and nothing has happened to him, he is even contesting for senate. That 90 billion should have been given to Dangote refinery to reduce there operating cost and thereby reduce fuel prices

Waziri Atiku Abubakar is coming! He is bringing subsidies back because the current removal is just an empowerment for governors to embezzle.

Let him subsidize local refineries only, and instead of paying them money, there should be tax cuts so as to reduce their operating costs and thereby led to lower fuel prices. You start paying subsidies like the days of old, and it will led to return of massive corruption.
