Marijuana users celebrated as Colorado became the first US state to allow retail cannabis sales, putting it in the vanguard of efforts across the country to legalize the drug.

The western state famous for its ski resorts and breathtaking mountain vistas has issued 348 retail licenses -- including for small pot shops -- that can sell up to 28 grams of pot to people aged 21 or older, starting Wednesday.

Washington state on the Pacific Coast will follow Colorado several months from now, when it also allows stores to begin selling cannabis.

A Second Republic member of the House of Representatives, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has openly declared President Goodluck Jonathan a failure.
He said that the president’s 2015 election ambitions should be forgotten and if rigged ‘will’ cause mayhem.

He said: “I am not and I have never been a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. And I have never been a governor and I don’t think I will be a governor in this world. But what I am saying is this: in a democracy, there is what we call performance legitimacy.

“That is if you are elected into a position of authority or power, your legitimacy does not only rest on your winning the election, but also in performing on the job so that people will say you have done well and may be in the mood to give you another term.
“As far as I am concerned, Jonathan did not win the last election. Goodluck has not performed in any manner credible that will warrant his being re-elected or think of being considered for re-election.

“Now, whether there was an agreement or not, the fact of the matter is that he has failed in very critical areas of governance. He has failed in security. He has failed in law and order. He has failed in economy. He has failed in everything that matters to a government and to the people of a country.
“Now, for me, he should not consider running but if he is determined to run and rig the election the way he did in 2011 together with INEC and security services, then he is asking for mayhem in the country and I have said it several times, if he insists on running and rigging the election, there will be mayhem.

“Now, many media people have chosen to ignore the aspect where I said if he runs and rigs the election. Let me tell you, I have been in politics for over 40 years,

“If he can decide today that there is going to be free and fair election by INEC in conjunction with the Police, the DSS, then my reaction will be let Goodluck stand for election, we will go there vote and defeat and disgrace him. But the fact of the matter is that people are very wary about the way elections have been conducted in the history of this country.”

The Federal Government on Tuesday appointed Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawunmi as the new Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

In a statement issued in Abuja and signed by Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the government said the appointment took effect from Dec. 23, 2013.

Apple just responded to newly released documents claiming that the U.S. National Security Agency has a method for gaining backdoor access to its iPhone. It says it has never worked with the agency, and is unaware of the alleged program targeting the iPhone known as DROPOUTJEEP.

The program was disclosed in a trove of documents leaked yesterday and shared by the security researcher Jacob Appelbaum and the German news magazine Der Spiegel.

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man, one Augustine Obodeke, for repeatedly sleeping with his 17-year-old daughter (Favour), impregnating her three times.

According to a police report, the girl had cried out to neighbours, who then presented the case to the Ugbowo Police Station in Benin City.
Acting on the recount, the police arrested Obodeke and has since detained him.

Narrating her ordeal, Favour said her father started having sexual intercourse with her after the death of her mother.

The governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, has said his administration has resolved to enforce the state’s traffic law banning the operations of commercial motorcyclists in Minna, the state capital, with effect from January 2, 2014.

Speaking via a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Danladi Ndayebo, Aliyu said that adequate arrangements had been made to cushion the effect of the ban.

According to him, the state government had procured 1000 units of tricycles popularly known as ”KEKEN TALBA”, 8 units of 18-seater buses and 12 units of 100 capacity buses to ease the problem of transportation in the state.
The statement read that the ban was necessary in order to reduce the spate of road crashes involving the commercial motorcyclists in the last few years in the state.

According to the statement, about 1, 000 units of tricycles are also currently being distributed to okada operators through the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Operators Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN).

The Nigerian government is spending 4.3 billion Naira (about 27.6 million dollars) on the upgrading of small Cassava flourmills and processors.
The fund is to be managed by the Bank of Industry (BOI).
The Minister of Agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina and the Managing Director of the BOI, Evelyn Oputu, signed the Cassava Bread Fund agreement.
It is also aimed at providing ready market for Cassava farmers.
