Recently, we raised a similar question about a crocodile-skin Hermès bag reportedly carried by Mrs. Margaret Obi. Instead of responding with facts or reasonable arguments, some of Peter Obi’s supporters attacked us with uncouth and unprintable comments.

This raises an important question: should accountability depend on the political affiliation of the person involved?

If it was legitimate to question the lifestyle of President Muhammadu Buhari’s family, it must also be legitimate to scrutinise the lifestyle of Peter Obi’s family. We cannot demand transparency from our political opponents while treating questions about our preferred candidates as insults or propaganda.

Accountability must be based on principles, not personalities. No politician, political spouse or public figure should be placed above legitimate public scrutiny. Supporters are free to dispute a report, challenge its authenticity or provide evidence showing that a claim is false. What they should not do is attempt to silence questions through abuse, intimidation and personal attacks.

The conduct of those surrounding a leader matters. A president cannot be everywhere or personally supervise every activity within an administration. He must depend on his family, aides, ministers, advisers and political associates. If those close to him display wastefulness, abuse influence or lack financial discipline, their conduct can undermine his credibility and affect public confidence in his government.

This does not mean that every personal possession belonging to a politician’s spouse was purchased with public money. Such a conclusion requires credible evidence. However, citizens and the media still have the right to ask reasonable questions, especially when political leaders build their reputations around modesty, prudence and responsible management of public resources.

Peter Obi has presented himself as a frugal leader who opposes waste and unnecessary luxury in government. It is therefore unsurprising that the public may examine whether the conduct and lifestyle of those around him reflect the values he promotes. The proper response is clarification—not insults.

Toxic political loyalty is dangerous because it gradually turns supporters into defenders of everything associated with their preferred candidate. They condemn an action when it involves an opponent but excuse the same conduct when it involves their political camp. That is not accountability; it is hypocrisy.

Nigeria will not progress if every politician is surrounded by supporters who attack anyone asking difficult questions. Leaders need supporters who can defend them with facts and also correct them when necessary. Blind loyalty weakens democratic accountability and eventually damages the leader it seeks to protect.

Those who criticised Mrs. Buhari’s reported luxury bag in 2016 should not be afraid to raise similar questions about Mrs. Obi today. The same standard must apply to Buhari, Tinubu, Atiku, Obi and every other political leader.

Public accountability cannot be selective. If our principles change according to the politician involved, then they were never principles in the first place.
