Most students have already heard of ChatGPT. Some use Gemini. Others have discovered tools like NotebookLM, Perplexity or Quizlet. But here's the interesting thing about AI and education: Having access to AI doesn't automatically make you a better student. A student can use AI to summarise a 50-page textbook, generate revision questions, create beautiful presentation slides and even explain a difficult topic. And still walk into an examination and discover that they haven't actually mastered the subject. That is because studying has several different problems. There is finding information. There is understanding information. There is organising information. And then there is something students often overlook: knowing what you don't know. That last one may be the most important. So rather than putting together another list of "cool AI tools", here's a more useful list: 10 AI-powered tools Nigerian students can use for different parts of the learning process — and what each one is actually good for. 1. NotebookLM — When Your Notes Become Too Much Imagine your lecturer sends you a 150-page PDF. You download it. You open it. You look at the first page. Then somehow end up on TikTok. We've all been there. NotebookLM makes long study materials interactive. You can ask questions about the material, request summaries and generate revision resources from the documents you've provided. It's particularly useful when you already have the material but don't know how to work through it efficiently. Best for: lecture notes, textbooks, PDFs and revision. 2. Perplexity — When Google Isn't Enough There is a difference between asking: "What is inflation?" and asking: "What has happened to inflation in Nigeria in recent years?" The second question requires research. Perplexity is useful when you need to explore a topic, find sources and continue reading beyond the initial answer. Best for: research and finding sources. 3. Consensus — When You Need Research, Not Opinions Students doing serious academic work eventually discover a painful truth: Not everything on the internet is evidence. Consensus helps users explore scientific research around questions and see what studies have found. For example: "Does lack of sleep affect academic performance?" Instead of relying on someone's blog post, you can explore research around the question. Best for: research-backed answers and academic projects. 4. Elicit — When Research Starts Getting Messy One research paper becomes five. Five become twenty. Soon you're asking yourself: "Which paper said what again?" Elicit helps students discover and organise academic research and compare papers. Best for: literature reviews, projects and serious research. 5. Gamma — When PowerPoint Gives You a Blank Screen Your lecturer says: "Prepare a presentation on climate change." You open PowerPoint. Blank slide. You stare at it. The blank slide stares back. Gamma can help turn an idea into a structured presentation much faster. You still need to check the content and make the work your own, but it can eliminate the painful "where do I even start?" stage. Best for: presentations and project work. 6. Napkin AI — When You Understand It Better as a Picture Some students can read three pages about photosynthesis and still be confused. Then somebody draws a diagram and suddenly: "Ohhhh. I understand." Napkin AI can turn written ideas into visual explanations and diagrams. That can be particularly useful for processes, systems and presentations. Best for: visual learners and project diagrams. 7. Quizlet — When Reading Isn't Enough One of the biggest mistakes students make is confusing reading with learning. Reading the same page five times can create a comforting feeling that you know the material. Then the exam arrives. And the brain says: "Interesting. I don't remember this." Tools such as Quizlet can turn study materials into flashcards and practice questions, making it easier to actively test yourself. Best for: active recall and revision. 8. An AI Study Buddy — When You Get Stuck Sometimes the problem isn't that the student doesn't want to study. They simply don't understand one sentence. Or one formula. Or one concept. And there is nobody around to ask. This is where AI study assistants can be useful. Instead of staring at the same paragraph for 20 minutes, a student can ask for the concept to be explained in simpler language. But there's an important distinction: An AI that answers your question isn't necessarily an AI that understands your learning journey. And that brings us to the last tool. 9. GradeBoost — When You Don't Know What You Don't Know This is the part many AI tool lists leave out. Imagine a student has just spent 30 minutes practising Mathematics. They score 68%. Okay. But what does that actually mean? Which topics are causing the problem? Are they struggling with fractions? Algebra? Word problems? Is the problem improving? Or getting worse? And what should they practise tomorrow? That's a different problem from asking an AI a question. It's the problem of knowing what to learn next. GradeBoost approaches studying from that direction. Its personalised practice adapts to the student's level, identifies weak areas and uses those results to guide what the student should work on next. Parents can also receive weekly progress reports rather than waiting until the end of the term to discover that something has gone wrong. It is also designed around the Nigerian secondary-school curriculum, covering core subjects across JSS and SSS. And perhaps the most interesting part is that the student doesn't need to spend hours on it. Ten focused minutes a day can be a starting point. The idea isn't to replace school. It isn't to replace a good teacher. It isn't even to replace a tutor. It's to keep the learning going between the classroom, the tutor and the next examination. 10. The Most Important AI Tool Is Still the Student This may sound obvious, but it is worth saying. AI can summarise. AI can explain. AI can research. AI can generate questions. AI can create presentations. AI can analyse performance. But it cannot sit the examination for you. And if students use AI only to produce answers instead of using it to understand, practise and improve, they may simply become very efficient at avoiding the actual learning. The best way to think about AI in education may therefore be: Don't use AI to do your learning for you. Use it to make your learning better. The tools above solve different parts of that journey. Some help you find information. Some help you understand it. Some help you organise it. Some help you practise it. And tools like GradeBoost focus on something particularly important: helping you see whether all that studying is actually working. Because ultimately, the goal isn't to use more AI. The goal is to become a better student. |
