EducationCRU: A Case Study On How Universities Are Not Ready For Physical Resumption by toluayomide(op): 7:22pm On Aug 22, 2020
What I am about to share is my firsthand account during my visit to Crawford university, Igbesa, Ogun State. I am a student of Crawford university and for the sake of humanity which few of us patriotic Nigerians still believe, I am writing this piece. Crawford university is a decent academic institution with adequate academic “structure” but the reality is that this school is grossly ill prepared for the resumption of physical learning and the accommodation of large gathering during this coronavirus pandemic. Below is the stack reality on ground!

On getting to the school gate, you instantly notice the total lack of concern for the coronavirus that is currently ravaging the world. The elderly security men whose age group are most vulnerable to this virus do not wear face mask or at the very least face shield. I mean this alone should give anybody a sense of how seriously Crawford university is taking the prevention of the entry of the virus into the school.

On getting entrance in Crawford university without observing any basic protective procedure such as hand washing or temperature check, I saw groups of shop owners chatting in close proximity, cleaners moving as a group, staff handing out files to each other and unfamiliar individuals who I suspect where on a causal visit to hand out coolers to unknown recipients, all of this happening without a single face mask in sight
On getting to the ATM machine, the situation turned out to be worse than I had earlier thought as visitors (who live around the school’s environment) have taken total control of the ATM with long queues devoid of the smallest form of social distance, most hanging around carefree without facial protection or any form of concern for a virus that as put the globe on high alert!

On moving through the school the reality really hit me hard, how do you tell students not to walk in groups for lectures or visit the restaurants in batches? how do you tell student to not “share gist’s” and socialize in groups? how do you tell students to remain in their rooms all day after leaving lectures and not visit others for an infinite amount of reasons? how do you tell students to not relate with lectures who leave off campus?
What should really scare anyone is that now when students are not on campus, there is so much laxity and lack of control over the situation, what then will be the situation when students resume? Expect for monetary motives and other personal gains, no person who as seen the reality on ground will agitate or demand for the physical resumption of schools.

If the security men at the entrance gate that meet every single person who goes in and out of the school fail to take this coronavirus seriously by wearing face masks, then we should know that this is an institution that will do everything to resume physical learning but fail terribly to the needful in terms of preventing the spread of the virus within its environment. Of cause, if there is to be an onsite inspection by the relevant body’s in regards to reopening of schools, you can rest assured knowing that every university in Nigeria will pass such inspection but this is far from the reality on ground when the public view is gone. The reality is that Nigeria is a great nation but the reality is that we are still a developing nation. We cannot afford to cough out billions and billions of dollars which should be used to cushion the after effect of this coronavirus and allocate such monies to the treatment of coronavirus patients when the situation can clearly be avoided. A problem shouldn’t be pointed out without offering solutions, now here are my solutions. All academic activities should remain online till a proven vaccine is made available. For the next three years, all scheduled school excursions should be banned, Industrial training should be banned for students of those years, National youth service corps should be banned for students of those years. Unusual times call for unusual measures.

Let it not be said for generations to come that it was under His Excellence, President Muhammed Buhari’s tenure that Nigeria suffered an unimaginable amount of death that has never been witnessed in the history of Nigeria. May Allah save us all.

I am Tolu Ayomide, a 300 level student of mass communication in Crawford university Igbesa and I want to strongly advice anyone considering coming to Crawford university in igbesa to stop!! Don’t even think of applying not to talk of coming to Crawford university. The facilities are the school are completely ancient and rusty, In the real sense of it the school can be described as a total village, the staff are totally incompetent and our vice chancellor Prof. Isaac Rotimi is very wicked and greedy, he takes the view of the student with total levity, don’t even talk about student union in this school because they are puppets in the hands of the vice chancellor who rules the school like a dictator. If you desire to acquire a university degree in a convenient environment free from clamp down on human rights, don’t dare come to Crawford university.
I am a 300L student and I can tell you from experience that we are occasionally mandated to kneel down and harassed by students on a daily basis, the school is not honest in their dealings with students, they usually seek every available opportunity to extort students of money that has been hard earned by our parents. The cafeteria staff are nothing to write home about, they are constantly rude to students despite the fact that we are paying for their service. Most of the money the school earns is directed towards providing maximum comfort to the school’s management who would stop at nothing to live in luxury, a testament to this is the multimillion naira Mercedes Benz suv that is owned by our vice chancellor, this is despite the fact that many of our laboratories lack adequate equipment’s.
Our hostels are a mess, I can’t take pictures and post here because of how graphic they are but believe me when I tell you that you don’t want to come to this school. IF YOU LOVE YOURSELF, DON’T, I REPEAT DON’T COME TO CRAWFORD UNIVERSITY IN IGEBSA. I believe actions speaks louder than words so here are a few pictures of the mess called Crawford university below.
